Beautiful scenery from a private river

Visiting the Kahana River on Oahu was hands-down one of the most beautiful and grounding experiences of our trip. This land has been lovingly owned and cared for by the same family for over 125 years, and you can feel the history, pride, and respect the moment you arrive. We were welcomed to kayak down a peaceful, breathtaking river surrounded by lush greenery and mountains that looked like something out of a dream. We found a perfect little spot to hang out by the water, complete with a rope swing that added to the magic. We made sure to be respectful of the land, enjoyed some snacks, and cleaned up after ourselves--because this place deserves to be cherished. After our three-hour adventure, we returned and were greeted by the incredible Lena, who made us feel like family. She even opened the shaved ice stand just for us (which, by the way, was delicious). We ended up sitting and talking with her for so long, it honestly felt like catching up with a favorite aunt. Her warmth, stories, and hospitality completely took away the homesick feeling we didn't even realize we had. Their sweet dog kept us company the whole time while we enjoyed our treat, and it was just one more reminder of how special this place is--not just the scenery, but the people. Everyone we met was so genuine and kind. We're already planning to come back before we leave the island. This wasn't just a fun excursion--it was a soulful, unforgettable moment we'll carry with us forever. Thank you for sharing your land, your kindness, and your spirit with us.

    Beautiful Kahana River

This place is a hidden gem and was definitely the highlight of our vacation. We were suffering from resort fatigue after laying out by the pool for days and needed an adventure. The Kahana River and bay were just stunning and unencumbered my mass tourism. Lena, the owner, has a limited number of slots available per day to make sure it doesn't feel crowded and we only passed other groups twice. The river is very calm which enabled my 6-and 7-year old to successfully stand up and maneuver the paddle board. They also loved the rope and swing. Lena was very welcoming and warm and greeted us with a freshly cut coconut for refreshing coconut water when we got back. We had so much fun and can highly recommend Kahana Adventures.

We were looking to do something a little bit different and adventurous, that wasn't ATVing (although we did that too). This really worked out far better than I had expected. We've driven passed this particular river so many times on our way to other places and never really thought to stop and explore, which was definitely a mistake. The owner (his family has been on the land for many generations) is super hospitable, accommodating, and provided everything you'd possibly need. We rented the 2-person kayak, but he also made available waterproof phone cases, bug spray (although didn't seem to have a problem with them), and life vests. An hour was plenty to go up and down the river and play on the rope swings. I'm not sure how far you could actually get, but it does get a bit narrow and tough with all the overgrowth a bit after the swings. I know the family cuts it back, but I'm betting that's pretty hard to do and keep up with. BTW, I think kayaks work better here than SUP depending on your steering abilities around the overgrowth. I do think the river scenery was much nicer than the river at Haleiwa (where we did SUP), but it's probably not more than an hour going up and down. The really nice part of the morning for us was making our way to where the river empties into the bay and boy that was really, really nice. The bay was calm, very blue, warm, and pretty shallow pretty far out. For our first attempt at ocean kayaking, it was very serene. This was really prettier than the bay at Haleiwa too, just pure nature and unspoiled by tourism There was only one other couple in our time slot and so we mostly had the river and bay to ourselves. I really liked the fact they purposely keep the number of guests down. To cap off the morning, we were treated to some shave ice upon return and had a great time talking to the owner and the other couple. One word of warning though, the river is pretty murky and deep in places, so be sure not to drop anything like I did with my sunglasses. I really liked those sunglasses too, I just watched it slowly sink. In total, this was about 2 hours for us. If you're on Oahu, book this activity. It was a totally different experience than some of the other larger, touristy operations and just let you feel more connected to the island. We will definitely recommend this to our friends.

Kahana River adventures is amazing! The owner, Lena, made us feel comfortable and excited to get in the kayak! We paddled down and back twice and went toward the ocean which was a beautiful view. This took us about two hours total. There was only one other party out during the later time slot which was very nice. This was the escape we needed from Waikiki. 11/10 Recommend

It's a little further down from the main ramp but it's a good spot for a bit of the main sea waters.

Wow wow and more wow ! If you want to do kayaking here is the spot. It's a great location , family owned business that welcome you as family and amazing vibes ! We were able to get a late reservation and enjoyed the canals and went towards the beaches a bit ... there is a parking area for you , it's safe and they have a clean restroom. They provide you with a water pouch for your phone and a water Fanny pack if needed at no additional fee. Better to call them direct and payment in cash. You can do online but it's a tad more. They have wifi there but don't forget on that side of the island there is little to none reception, so it's a true zen way to "unplug". They are so kind we even got amazing coconuts to drink from ! Overall A+ spot if you want to get away from all the resorts and crowds . Can't wait to come back again !

My husband and I came here after realizing we needed to plan ahead for a kayak adventure to china hat island. We are SO happy we stumbled upon this local, family owned business. We walked in and rented a tandem kayak. Gorgeous scenery in the river with a swing and ropes for a quick fun pit stop. We kayaked back down river to a beautiful bay. 10/10 recommend!

I want to start off by saying Lena was such a great host. She greeted us with a big hug. After kayaking she opened some fresh coconuts for my group and I. The coconuts were cold and refreshing. The kayak was a great experience. The only thing we have to blame was the weather. It was really windy so we couldn't kayak too far into the bay like planned. Even so, we still had a good time kayaking through the river streams. While going through the river there were rope swings, too bad we didn't dress appropriately to swim. Thank you to Lena for your hospitality!

The most incredible views paddle boarding along the very beautiful and peaceful Kahana river that leads you into a breathtaking view of the Kahana bay. We were greeted by the loveliest and friendliest host and family upon arrival at this locally owned business. Lina provided us with amazing services: free locker space, hot shower, clean bathroom, and the travel necessities needed when paddle boarding on the water. We were simply in awe by the whole experience and couldn't ask for a better host to paddle board at this beautiful location! If I could, I would rate this place more than 5 stars, highly recommend this place so much! Mahalo Lina, your hospitality truly made us feel like 'Ohana! We'll definitely come back next time we're in Oahu

We had such a great time kayaking on the Kahana river thanks to our great experience with Kahana Adventures! It was easy to reserve our kayak online the morning we went and they had it ready for us within minutes when we arrived a bit early. We kayaked up the river for a bit, then turned around and stopped at a fun spot with a couple swings. The surroundings were beautiful the whole time and we ended our adventure by heading out to the bay, parking our kayak on a little bit of beach, and swimming in the perfect water. Three hours was plenty (we were out for more like two hours) and we got fresh coconuts to rehydrate us when we returned! Kahana Adventures is a great local business and a super convenient way to have some fun on the water! We will definitely recommend to family and friends.

Great guys running the operation who put first you having the experience of a lifetime. This is an incredible slice of Hawai'i that you'd be remiss not to add to your travel plans!

Best adventure in Hawaii. Family run business that takes care of its customers! Great equipment, great views. Perfect for beginners or experienced Kayakers.

Came here with a friend who was visiting the island and it was her favorite thing she did during her trip! We were greeted by the cutest dogs and kindest hosts, who provided us with mosquito repellent and waterproof phone bags for free. The river was picturesque and quaint - we took the 9am slot and had it all to ourselves. It was so peaceful and we loved stopping for pictures at the swing. We kayaked to the beach and spent an hour there before returning. Would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for something incredibly relaxing and fun!

We had such a great time kayaking and paddle boarding! There were 8 of us, 5 of us were siblings reuniting since we live in different states. We laughed until we couldn't breathe. The view was magnificent and outwardly! We went from bay to the ocean and it was incredible to experience. Many thanks for Lena and her nephews, they were so kind and friendly! She cut open some coconuts at the end. An adventure will never forget!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I hope you all get a driver self-nicknamed "Short"…read more We booked a Pearl Harbor tour which included a visit to the Dole pineapple gift shop as well as a drive around the island (with a few stops and drivebys). Our driver nicknamed "Short" was a great driver as well as a native who knew the island and all it's customs, history, and it's little fun facts and quirks. Short is also a life philosopher. I won't spoil it should you get him, but he has a good way of keeping things light hearted but really makes you think about why the world and it's constant feuding is the way it is. The trip started sharply at 8AM (hotel lobby pickup) and after picking up a few passengers at different hotels, we were off. The Pearl Harbor tour and the ride over was excellent. While I knew a lot of what he was narrating, he goes into the back story of why Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Much different than what you probably learned in history class. Nothing excuses the Japanese military government for doing what they did and he's not an apologist for them, but he laid out the facts leading up to it. Very informative. The movie at the Pearl Harbor center was well done by the Park Service, but we didn't have much time to look around much after that as we needed to keep to schedule. A few passengers were a full 30 minutes late, but he didn't give them the riot act but instead gently and jokingly chided them a little. It was pretty funny! The Dole pineapple gift shop stop was all about buying stuff, so if you've done it you'll be bored. But for first timers, get the Pineapple Freeze at the back of the store. We stopped by three parks and beaches which included the North Shore, a park whose name I forget, and Hanauma Bay. We highly recommend PPF. Just remember as part of a tour, be courteous and be on time. Write it down, put it in your phone, whatever it takes to keep everyone on the tour on track!

I read about the excursions off Waikiki that all but promised seeing Honu. I did some research and chose to book with Captain Max Boat Tours and their Turtle Canyon Snorkel. I read reviews and what really attracted me to this outfitter was the fact they ran semi-private boat tours with only 6 guests. Correspondence (email) leading up to the excursion was clear and helpful. We arrived a few minutes early and visited their small shop while checking in. We waited just a few minutes and then were walked over to their boat dock, meeting both the guide, Sophia and the boat captain, Stephanie. They gave us safety information and prepared us for the short boat ride out to "Turtle Canyon". Our craft was a zodiac type inflatable raft with a mounted seats and a windscreen for the captain. We glided out to the snorkel zone with Waikiki beach before us, a grand ocean view of this famous beach. Sophie helped the other guests get their snorkel gear (included in the price) except for us - we bring our own snorkel equipment. We put in the water and after all guests were in, Sophia called in the direction she was leading us. On the way over we swam through schools of fish. This was an awesome experience we did not expect - we snorkel a lot and love seeing the marine life. We learned that some outfitters feed the fish out here and so they stick around instead of swim away, which we're used to experiencing. In about 20 feet of water our guide pointed out several turtles on the bottom. Lucky for us, one of them swap up for air - and stayed near the and stayed near the surface for quite a few minutes (longer than we usually see) which allowed us to get a great view of this beautiful creature (all the while, maintaining a safe distance to protect the turtle). Sophia led us to two other spots nearby, seeing fish on the reef below and several more turtles. Once again we were fortunate to have another turtle swim up to the surface for a few breaths. I'm very glad we chose Captain Max as some of the other outfitters that bring larger groups would have been a very different experience with a group clamoring for views of the few turtles that were out there. Our guide was knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly - and ensured we were all safe (and the marine life were also protected). On our way back to shore we were treated to another great view of Oahu, with Waikiki and Honolulu in the foreground and the mountains behind. Thanks Sophie and Captain Stephanie for a memorable excursion! NOTE: We know that early in the morning is generally the best time to snorkel as the water tends to be calmer, visibility better and fish ore active. We had a 930 start but next time would be the early time (730) as I learned there are even fewer other outfitters out on the water at that time.

Everyone absolutely loved him! This was, hands down, the best money we spent while visiting Waikiki. Thank you, RJ, for making our first visit to Hawaii truly unforgettable--you are a true gem! Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an informative, fun, and well-paced experience.

In our case, we booked a luau and were only informed the evening before our flight -- when it was too late to arrange anything else -- that suddenly "there are no slots available" (but they of course had already charged us). While we did eventually receive a refund, we were still stiffed of our planned Christmas luau experience for my 7 year old through seemingly bad inventory management and travel arrangement by the company, well too late to make alternative arrangements.

Captain Chris, Liliia, and Kingston are the awesomest boat crew ever experienced !…read more They were all so friendly and supportive throughout the entire experience. Ensuring everyone had a great time, they also gave information on safety so that we can enjoy the adventurous activities without any hiccups I know how to swim but I chose to use the floating vests to preserve some energy because it does take a lot of physicality from you - pro tip: BRING WATER (with liquid IV if you like it) they provide snacks, tea/water, two clean restrooms and a fresh water shower on the front deck to rinse off the salt water which is nice bonus The best activity is the slide - DO NOT PASS ON IT you just might regret it The jump from the second level is also great !!! Definitely not for the fearful lol The kayaks and paddle boards are tied to the boat so you don't get lost in sea You see a bunch of fish while snorkeling and can also see the bottom of the reef, didn't see a turtle but it's all good - it was still a great first time experience Seriously, just SO MUCH FUN ~ 10/10 would recommend !

Great vibe from the crew. If you're looking for a great family fun adventure with the kids, E Sea…read moreDiver puts it all together. The only downside is the popularity of this local snorkel, with many optional fun add ons, is the number of people on board. Tip: if you line up to board early, you get the opportunity to claim your cruising spot. I was with a family with kids from the mainland and our goal was to grab seating on the forward deck outside for the best Capt view during our cruise. My awesome wife also staked out a seat inside the cabin where the snack bar & restrooms are, to stash our beach bag & lunch cooler filled with our own beverages. Note: They have water and instant iced lemon tea with cups available. Also sweet & salty snack bars for all inside the main covered cabin. I enjoyed the boat ride! We were not disappointed with several distant but exciting whale blows, surfacing & whale tail waves along the way. The view of Wikiki and Diamond head was worth my price of admission. Note: You can book on line and select from 3 options; Boat ride observer only, Ride & Snorkel, Deluxe all inclusive ticket to participate in all the fun extra activities besides snorkel. Stand up paddle board, kayak, water slide and trampoline. I bought the snorkel that also allows you to jump off the upper deck if you so desire. I ultimately sat back and enjoyed watching everyone have fun. You can also buy a Groupon for this type of event. You'll enjoy their hospitality but be prepared to experience that tourist crowd kind of atmosphere. Four Fun Stars for a get what you pay for tourist-style adventure! Don't forget to bring your own beverages, sun block your feet first & the rest of your vulnerable spots! Also be patient, live the Aloha spirit and tip the hard working crew!
