Awesome Kayaking trip with plenty of sea turtles, awesome guides,... Wheelchair Accessibility: Upon pick up at the hotel, the guide brought us to a van. The van is fairly high, thus one needs to be fairly mobile to get up there. But the guide was extremely helpful and helped as well to get the chair mounted. Upon arrival, there is no solid walkway thus it's a bit tough for the wheelchair. But again, with the awesome help of the guides we managed to get through it. There is about a 10m way from the forest to the sea through sandy beach. The guides brought the Kayak as close to the wheelchair as possible and then pushed it down the sand into the water once I sat dow in the Kayak. So, getting in to the water was no big deal. Once the tour was done, we brought the Kayak to the beach. The guides then pushed the Kayak (with me on it) as much up the beach as possible. It was pretty heavy and they did a great job to make it as easy as possible to get off the Kayak. Once in my chair, they helped push the wheelchair through the sand up to the forest where there is a better surface. It was real teamwork :-) All in all, this trip is accessible for someone that is fairly mobile. A huge shoutout to the guides who were so extremely helpful! It was an unforgettable morning! (Oh, and the tour itself is a must-do as well, but the other reviewers already covered that )

Absolutely wonderful experience. Our guides Mike and Scott were phenomenal, providing a perfect mix of information and humor. We saw about 20 sea turtles during our tour. Mike was kind enough to take and send along a number of great pictures from our visit which was an unexpected and much appreciated bonus. I can not recommend Shaka Kayaks highly enough. A+++

Kayak your! Parker and Brian are fantastic! Funny with the cheeseball jokes but very knowledgeable! Not hard are on the eyes either

I read about the excursions off Waikiki that all but promised seeing Honu. I did some research and chose to book with Captain Max Boat Tours and their Turtle Canyon Snorkel. I read reviews and what really attracted me to this outfitter was the fact they ran semi-private boat tours with only 6 guests. Correspondence (email) leading up to the excursion was clear and helpful. We arrived a few minutes early and visited their small shop while checking in. We waited just a few minutes and then were walked over to their boat dock, meeting both the guide, Sophia and the boat captain, Stephanie. They gave us safety information and prepared us for the short boat ride out to "Turtle Canyon". Our craft was a zodiac type inflatable raft with a mounted seats and a windscreen for the captain. We glided out to the snorkel zone with Waikiki beach before us, a grand ocean view of this famous beach. Sophie helped the other guests get their snorkel gear (included in the price) except for us - we bring our own snorkel equipment. We put in the water and after all guests were in, Sophia called in the direction she was leading us. On the way over we swam through schools of fish. This was an awesome experience we did not expect - we snorkel a lot and love seeing the marine life. We learned that some outfitters feed the fish out here and so they stick around instead of swim away, which we're used to experiencing. In about 20 feet of water our guide pointed out several turtles on the bottom. Lucky for us, one of them swap up for air - and stayed near the and stayed near the surface for quite a few minutes (longer than we usually see) which allowed us to get a great view of this beautiful creature (all the while, maintaining a safe distance to protect the turtle). Sophia led us to two other spots nearby, seeing fish on the reef below and several more turtles. Once again we were fortunate to have another turtle swim up to the surface for a few breaths. I'm very glad we chose Captain Max as some of the other outfitters that bring larger groups would have been a very different experience with a group clamoring for views of the few turtles that were out there. Our guide was knowledgeable, approachable, and friendly - and ensured we were all safe (and the marine life were also protected). On our way back to shore we were treated to another great view of Oahu, with Waikiki and Honolulu in the foreground and the mountains behind. Thanks Sophie and Captain Stephanie for a memorable excursion! NOTE: We know that early in the morning is generally the best time to snorkel as the water tends to be calmer, visibility better and fish ore active. We had a 930 start but next time would be the early time (730) as I learned there are even fewer other outfitters out on the water at that time.

Which, to be fair, is probably the most historically accurate way to experience a place with the word "plantation" in the name. On one hand, it's genuinely beautiful. The grounds are lush, the air smells incredible, and the pineapple everything is incredibly delicious. The Dole Whip absolutely lived up to the hype, and the gardens, train ride, and giant maze had this cheerful old Hawai'i roadside attraction energy that felt charming instead of overly polished. It was wholesome. I even saw a few adorable cats being fed by the workers. There is also this underlying awareness the entire time where your brain quietly goes, "...wait." Why? Because plantations are not cute historically. The word itself carries a lot of weight tied to colonization, labor exploitation, and the reshaping of Hawai'i for corporate agriculture and tourism. So walking through a place that's simultaneously serving pineapple soft serve while existing within that history creates a peculiar emotional duality that's hard to ignore. Honestly, I appreciated that feeling. Not because the history is good, because it absolutely isn't, but because places should make us think a little. Hawai'i is stunning but it's also layered and complicated and visiting somewhere like this becomes more meaningful when you acknowledge both the beauty and the discomfort instead of pretending one cancels out the other. The experience ended up feeling less like, "Yay pineapples!" and more like a reminder that travel is best when you let yourself enjoy the present while still respecting the history underneath it. Note: I totally destroyed a Dole Whip because personal growth, historical awareness, and pineapple soft serve with fresh pineapple can intertwine, okay?
