For the Kid's birthday, he wanted to try the new Cuban restaurant in town. A coworker had also recommended it highly, so here we are. The ambiance is nice, with Latin music (not too loud) and framed Cuban-themed art. At 11:30 on a Thursday morning, it wasn't busy at all. We started with an order of tostones replenished- little cups made of seasoned plantain, stuffed with mildly spiced ground beef and topped with cheese. Next time, I may just have to get a whole order for myself! Delicious, slightly starchy, served piping hot. While my Bride stuck with the water (chilled tap water, provided in a bottle), my meal came with a soft drink. I chose IRONBEER because it just looked awesome. It tastes just as good as it looks. The Kid got a MATERVA yerba maté soda, and before our appetizer was finished, had gone online and located a local store that carries it, it was that tasty. I ordered a sandwich called the Pan con Croquetas, which they describe as a "buttery toasted bun stacked with crispy ham croquettes, tomatoes, lettuce and Swiss cheese." It's all that and more! It came with a tiny plastic sword, which is always fun, and yuca fries- starchier than potato fries, but just as delicious. The Birthday Boy got the Vaca Frita, which literally translates as "fried cow," which comes with two sides. He got frijol colorado, which they describe as "red beans simmered and seasoned with fresh ground garlic, pork, onions, peppers and olive oil." It's kind of like a chili soup. The vaca is a "shredded flank cooked until tender and marinated in garlic, lime juice and onions before being fried until its exterior is crispy," Definitely recommended. He couldn't even finish it! The Lechon Asado was my Bride's choice. This Cuban-style roast pork is marinated in a garlicky-citrus mojo sauce. It was tender and delicious, and mildly spiced, but came with a zippy little garlic sauce. For her first side, she got sautéed vegetables. For their second side, they both got Yuca con Mojo, a boiled yuca with a citrusy garlic sauce. Less starchy than my fries, still delicious. The waiter was clearly paying attention and heard me tell the Kid "it's your birthday, get whatever you want." When he brought the bill and the box, he presented a complimentary flan with a birthday candle. A lovely surprise, and the best flan I've tasted in years. Total before tip was $75.99. We stopped in for lunch on a Thursday and had the place nearly to ourselves. There were a number of takeout / delivery orders. The Cuban sandwich had good flavor. The yuca fries were crisp and hot. I ordered a side of yuca con mojo which came in a large portion and was on the bland side. My friend enjoyed the side of seasoned vegetables. The cafe con leche was tasty. Ay, que rico! Living in Florida for five years made me truly appreciate Cuban and Latin cuisine. What a nice treat to visit this place. K'bolà is unassumingly tucked into the New Town area of Williamsburg. We were seated right away, and since it was a cold rainy day, I opted for a cafe con leche, which is a coffee with milk. It was a nice treat on a chilly day. We had the tostones rellenos (stuffed plantains) with shrimp... it was tasty, covered with a tomato sauce and mozzarella. The Cuban sandwich was pretty good too - crispy Cuban bread with delicious pork and the traditional mustard/pickle combo. The sandwich was so big we ate the other half later for dinner. Score! Love that they offer other traditional Cuban dishes like ropa vieja, and was excited to see pastelitos, Cuban pastries traditionally filled with guava and/or cheese in their dessert case. The food is phenomenal, atmosphere superb, staff fantastic!! I ate three different items and several sides...not in their entirety-shared with Hubster! I wish I had pictures of the other two times but I was so into the food... it's been so hard to find good Cuban food.... Visited here with friends for to celebrate a birthday. The restaurant is nice and clean inside and we were seated immediately upon entry. The waiter was friendly, but it took forever to take our drink orders, and when we got them three people had to send theirs back because they did not tast right or wasn't mixed very well. After we ordered our food it took 45 minutes to arrive, and myself and another couple didn't actually get several of the items we ordered. I had the Fajitas DE Pollo Marinadas, the chicken was really really dry, and not much flavor. I had to mix it with the veggies in order to eat it, would have sent it back but it took long enough to get it in the first place. My wife had the Pechuga a la Plancha and her chicken was really dry also, she didn't even eat her meal. Overall we weren't too please. There will be no future visits. read more

I've been here a couple of times and the food, drinks, and service have always been great! It is my first time trying Cuban food and so I can't speak to authenticity or comparisons to other Cuban food I've had, but I think the food is really tasty and the portions for the entrees are quite large. If I had to recommend some things, I'd say get the empanadas and croquetas bc they are sooo delicious. ok full disclosure I am biased about how good this place is but I can be because I'm Cuban but as such I have a right to tell all y'all (yes, I'm a Virginian AND a Cubana -- my Papi was from Cuba, and I was born in Lynchburg hehe) this is not just so delicious, so truly like my cooking like my Tia's cooking, but is like you just landed in Miami and is legitimately making Cuban food - not fusion, not "nod to Cuban" oh yes, this is worthy of my Tia and primas Cuban food. And it's in Williamsburg for Pete's sake! Why oh why can't we get a legit Cuban place in Richmond and please do not even start. Here's what you'll see here: Vaca Frita, Picadillo, Lechon, Yuca with mojo, congri, tostones, maduros, ropa vieja... I could go on. If you know, you know. If you don't... you MUST go and see, taste, explore the flavors. Cuban food is onions, garlic, tomatoes aka a sofrito. (did I mention garlic?) often with citrus - a lot of citrus flavors. There are so many delightful flavors that come together in these comfort foods (which I should mention - it is not fancy - think of it as the equivalent of home cooking, Latino style). I'm just glad that after decades of searching bc I travel a lot for work, I stumbled onto this little gem because of a work trip and it paid off in spades. They had mojitos and other nice cocktails, and an outdoor space when the weather is more amenable (hotter than hades right now). If you are a food enthusiast and want to experience real, actual, Cuban food and can't make a trip to Miami I'm here to tell you that, outside the home cooks with Cuban roots, this is a place to do it. I am going to make this a place to come to intentionally and I do not care if it's an hour from where I live - it's worth it for a real experience. And oh by the way... I've visited the restaurant 4 times thus far. 1st time was superb - service and food. 2nd time was great as well. The last 2 visits were not good. The service was bad. Very bad. Waiter doesn't show up to check on the table. He took the order, delivered the meal, and returned when we were done to deliver the check. My meal was soaked in grease. I couldn't eat it. I have had the same entree twice before, so very aware that it was fried. The comment from the waiter was that it is all fried. Ok, I'm aware of that. I don't know if it didn't drain well or was left in the grease or what, but I could only eat 25% of it. The waiter never offered to get me something else, just said he would let them know. read more

Several of our dishes were great - the fried rice dish especially, my husband really enjoyed his steak (churrascura (sp?)), and my father in law really enjoyed his Cuban sandwich. Most of our drinks were good as well, although the mojito was not great. But our server really struggled to take our order, messing several things up, the drinks took almost 30 min to be made (we were almost the only customers in the restaurant), and I had the pork plate and it was INCREDIBLY dry. Pros: staff is friendly, atmosphere is cozy, inviting, and clean Cons: food took awhile and was inconsistent with delivery- a friend and I ordered appetizers at the same time and mine came a good 15 minutes prior to hers making it somewhat awkward experience. I have no issue waiting for food if it's busy, but it just wasn't that good. Black beans were watery and flavorless, the sauce with the empanadas was all wrong and they were too thin and oily. Chicken needed more seasoning. Sweet plantains and cuban coffee are solid. read more

While picking up the food, they had genuinely the NICEST staff (even nicer than Chick-Fil-A) and were fantastic people. I asked where we could eat around the area and if there was a public picnic table since we had a dog. She said, "uh we allow dogs in here and on the patio! Grab a seat outside!"
