We feel like this place has gone way downhill. You can't ride your reputation forever; you still have to serve good food. The pulled pork had no flavor at all until you added the hot sauce that was on the table. If you don't want hot sauce, you just get to eat plain white bread pulled pork. (The hot sauce was maybe the best thing on the table besides the black beans...) Every single damn dish was covered in chopped sweet peppers; completely unnecessary and what are they trying to hide? Couldn't even taste the empanadillas because they had so much crema all over them...that should be on the side so we could actually taste the food . The steak was OK (not Cuban in any recognizable way) but the very smallest portion possible....for a "special" that we paid extra for, we expected it to be special in some way. And the platanos...THE PLATANOS...super over-fried and dry as a bone with no flavor, no salt, no nothing. We left a huge dish of them on the table. The key lime tart barely had any lime flavor. Service is friendly and quick and the food is always fresh and delicious. I always start with a fresh-squeezed limeade, which is so refreshing and goes well with their food. I recommend starting with the spinach and ricotta empanadillas, which are always hot and delicious. I have tried a bunch of their pressed sandwiches, from the traditional cuban and the pesto jack melt to the chicken-pineapple to the press and the riff-on-a-traditional cu bánh mí, all of which are super tasty. This was so yummy! They also have a constant breakfast menu so I was able to get breakfast at 3pm. The ambiance is so cute and you can see all sorts of cultural trinkets. Came here for lunch (breakfast time 9am) because I wanted to try something different. I have been seeing Kuba Kuba as a recommended spot for a while, so I didn't hesitate when i saw they were open & a short walking distance from work! I came in & was requested to sit anywhere I like. The waiter(who I'm assuming is the owner) was very nice and welcoming. It was pretty busy for an opening shift and he was very busy but still managed to have a menu , my water , and check on me. I ordered a lemonade with the salmon and spinach tortilla. Upon the meal arriving i got my lemonade which was so good(lemonade with spritzer). The tortilla was actually an omelette and low key pissed me off because i would've ordered something else. They have a hefty menu and even with large portion I would've suggested an entree instead of the breakfast menu. I am not a fan of omelettes at all, it had a smokey taste to the salmon with no flavor but the veggies made up for the taste. It was a lot going on within this meal and I would not get it again. I do want to go back but for an entree and a drink. The service was what stole the spot. Such a nice guy, i can tell by the atmosphere of the customers and how many were regulars. I've been coming here for YEARS as I live around the corner in the neighborhood. Usually I get amazing service from people I typically have recognized for years - Yesterday evening was different. The man serving tables was rude and didn't even take the time ask me if I needed anything the whole time, he wouldn't even look at or acknowledge my presence. The whole experience left a horrible taste in my mouth and I'm not gonna lie it was very upsetting. I finally checked out Kuba Kuba for the first time on Monday with a friend. The interior is so cozy and lived in with slightly grunge, artsy vibes. We were directed to select any two-top that was open. Shortly after, menus were delivered. My friend ordered a cafe con leche, and at first I only ordered a limeade, but after seeing her drink, I couldn't resist and risked the potential of being up late since it was mid-afternoon during our visit. Fortunately, it didn't keep me up, and that coffee was so stinking good! The limeade was nice and refreshing also. For food, I ordered the spinach and ricotta empandillas, as well as the morning quesadilla. While both were good, the quesadilla was the standout for me. The flavors all worked together really well. She reccommended the Salmon Tortilla (essentially a Spanish frittata). It was huge, full of smoked salmon and veggies, and was complimented really nicely by their house hot sauce. My husband got the Elena Ruiz and really joined that as well. Our server also helped with my coffee selection. I love cuban coffee but never know exactly what I want, and she put in the perfect order when I asked for something sweet and without a ton of milk. My son got a lemonade, which seemed to be house made and a little on the sour side, which I thought was great. They recommended the Tres Leches cake, which is apparently a family recipe and has been featured on the Food Network. There is street parking nearby. ***EXPERIENCE*** It feels like treason to leave this review, but I think after living in Miami, I'm spoiled with my Cuban food. I've been here twice and both times found that what I ordered was pretty ok. Do note both waiting for your food and a table can take a bit. The decor and vibes inside are really homey. It has the local haunt feel that Richmond's favorite establishments have. When I first came I was surprised to see they didn't serve croquetas. On my second visit, I learned their cafecito wasn't made with all the sugar I was used to. I came with my partner's family and they enjoyed what they ordered. The Cuban Sandwich here is fine, a bit dry. I tried their softshell sammie and it was ok, there was a lot of bread. The plantains here are good. The coconut risotto cakes were sweet and made me think of fried tapioca (in a good way). ***BATHROOM*** They have one single stall here. We did not grab drinks so can't add to that, but super friendly staff. Kuba Kuba is a great example of a restaurant that takes good quality fresh ingredients and turns them into simple but well thought out dishes that are flavorful. We were seated in a timely manner despite not having a dinner reservation. I had the ropa vieja which I thought was wonderful. It was meaty, hearty, and the chopped tomato and onion it was topped with provided a fresh contrast to the braised meat, onions, and peppers. In terms of taste it was very simple but I appreciated that because it allowed the actual ingredients to shine rather than being drowned out by other flavors. I added some of their hot sauce to it for a bit of extra spice. I do have one critique of their hot sauce: it literally tastes like Heinz ketchup with some habanero hot sauce mixed into it. Not too spicy, but very ketchup forward which I thought was odd. There were a few platanos on the side, but they were just ok. Decently crispy, but only had a hint of sweetness and could've used some more time ripening before frying.
