Everything about our experience was excellent. Even the cold, rainy weather couldn't reduce our enjoyment of our meal. The environment was great, we sat in the glass enclosed patio like area. The space was very nice and comfortable. We ate almost everything on the menu and enjoyed it all. It was well prepared, nicely plated and presented by the waitstaff very well. Our waiter, Jakob, made the experience even better. He was professional and friendly. He mirrored our enthusiasm and sense of adventure about our meal. I very much appreciate him helping to make the positive memory even better. I let him choose our wines and he did a great job, explaining each one and making sure we were happy with each before pouring us a glass. Excellent meal and I hope I have the opportunity to visit again in the future. Truly a highlight of my visit to Berlin. Not worth it at all. Food is subpar at best for the price, but the service is the worst part. We were undeniably provided different treatment because we were asian. We were never checked up on unless we specifically asked for it. We clearly saw our two servers being very kind to other parties next to us but we were flat out ignored when we clearly called for a server at least 3 times. We were ignored twice again when calling for the check, and got a dirty look from the lady server when my mom raised her voice after being ignored (she was one table away but ignored us). Our male server clearly had some kind of superiority complex and sharply dismissed our comments about the service. I hope no one has the kind of experience we had here. read more

Somewhat of a travel hack, you can make a reservation at Kafer for breakfast, tea, or dinner and get access to the Reichstag dome. The service is all inclusive and provides you with stunning views and good food. It's a bit pricey, but considering that you get a meal and ticket to view, it's worth it. The restaurant is elegant and the food is very tasty. We had the pastrami, dessert bites, and the caramelized onion and pear tart. Service was prompt and courteous. Well worth the price of admission. Be prepared to get to the Reichstag security gate early because check in and ID verification can take time. read more

Amazing opportunity to eat in a historic building! Food was delicious and service great.

I don't think the restaurant itself is 5 stars but the fact that a reservation at the restaurant allows you to roam the dome and roof of the Reichstag (with a free audio guide) with fewer tourists and shorter lines is worth 5 stars. We made reservations online for a Sunday when the General (and free tours) were not given. You have to reserve in advance so you can submit the names and birthdates of everyone in your party for a security check. When you arrive you have to show a photo ID and your reservation at the white trailer in front of the Reichstag. Then you and your bags will go through x-ray machines and metal detectors. Someone will accompany a group of people to the building and up the elevator. Once the elevator reaches the top, you can get an audio guide and wander around the roof and climb to the ramps to the top of the dome both before and after your meal. We went for cake and coffee time in the afternoon. They had several cakes to choose from and they were all beautiful looking and moderately tasty. Our server was very nice and the view of the city was great. Four cakes and coffee cost 45€. read more

Lovely restaurant with a view. Make a reservation or have your hotel do so for you. Bring identification as the security is high. The lunch prices are much more palatable than dinner, although the nighttime view is probably extraordinary. We enjoyed a smoked fish appetizer busting with flavor, chorizo? Bacon smokiness paired over creamy pea purée, smoked artic fish. Followed with schnitzel (huge portion, large enough to share) with a perfect hint of lemon. The veal meatballs in a rich demiglaze, the perfect amount of sauce, the halls were not swimming! A great start for welcoming you into the city. Stopped by here close to closing to warm up after a tour of the Bundestag and Reichstag building. We ended up getting some tea and desserts. Our server was a very sweet and polite man. We had no idea what to order and he brought us his recommendations. Definitely would recommend going with the recommendations of the staff. I do not remember the exact dessert names, but they were very well presented and delicious. One was a super chocolate-y and rich while the other was light and refreshing. We breakfasted here solely so we could skip the line getting up to the Reichstag (Bundestag) Dome. Well worth it IMO, since it meant skipping a 1-2 hour line in July. I made the breakfast reservation two days in advance. The food was quite good and, at breakfast time, not unreasonably expensive. We had an outstanding view of both the Reichstag roof and out over the Tiergarten throughout the meal, then walked right out to the dome to take in the sights and history at our leisure. In my mind the Reichstag is a "must visit" in Berlin -- and for those tight on time, the restaurant route offers a great way to kill two birds with one stone. read more

Some friends told us we had to have a meal on top of the Reichstag, and the were so right. Now I have to admit there is a touristy gimmick to this but it is worth doing at least once. Or it is the sort of thing to take business contacts to or if your parents are picking up the tab. I wasn't that excited by the dinner menu, so went for lunch instead, which I recommend doing. You need to make reservations a day or two a head, but there is an online page that works. Plus, you get to jump the line for the dome, which is a great fringe benefit. We had the pea and smoked Salmon soup and tomato and goat cheese to start. Both were excellent, but the pea soup is a little taste of summer and just a tad better. For the rest I had the pork (really pork two ways). Which was pork cheeks braised to perfection with pork loin, chantrelles, and cauliflower purée. Excellent! We also had the pike-perch, which was perfect. Cooked perfectly, seasoned appropriately with a dill mustard sauce. The balance was spot on. Service was excellent. As I said a bit of a tourist thing, but treat yourself at least once to come here for lunch and take in the city skyline. And if you are a visitor, might as well have an amazing lunch on top of the reichstag as you'll probably come here anyways. read more

Käfer Berlin is a really chic, modern and trendy restaurant on the roof of the Reichstag in Berlin. The ambience is very relaxing and fresh. Plus not only can you sit inside the restaurant, they also have an open terrace over looking Berlin towards the east, if the weather is bad they have glass screens which can be closed while you take in the views from the outside in. The Food is delicious here and the service is truly great, we had Sunday lunch here and even though it was very busy and with a children party on the terrace, noise was minimal and service was excellent, really friendly and professional staff. You can see the chefs preparing, cooking and serving your meal as the kitchen is open. It is not very expensive, compared to many other places in Berlin Mitte, but then again not many tourists know that this gem is tucked away, in a place that they queue around the block for. Reservations are needed and a good tip is that when reserving a table on top of the Reichstag you avoid the queue, entrance is at the side and in a few seconds you're on the roof of the Reichstag, taking in the great views and the great food. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon. read more

Made a reservation days in advance and got a confirmation email. When we showed up they stopped us at the door and said that there was currently an event and they're not taking reservations. We were confused and showed them the email but they sent us away unapologetically. They were very rude and preppy about the whole thing at the checkpoint. read more

And no! You are not paying for the decor but for a great quality restaurant with a good service. At lunch, you took from the menu: we have tested an onion soup and a nice bread salad as starters. For the main, we took veal meat balls and vegetarian pasta. The 4 dishes were rightly seasoned, and with creative taste. Definitely a must while in Berlin. Dined here in order to skip the line at entry to the top of the dome. Had to make a reservation one day in advance (late Februrary) for breakfast. Breakfast was refined and delicious; however, the service was a little spotty. I ordered the veggie omelette, which was accompanied by some delicious bread. Coffee was also very good. Prices can be a little expensive, but you can go for just coffee and cake if you like as well. Afterwards (or before), you can go directly into the glass dome, which is an architectual masterpiece. I went back again in October 2011 this time taking the girlfriend for another breakfast. Once again it was amazing service, exquisite level of food quality and a very unique dining experience being on the roof of the building where the second world war ended with a bloody siege down to the last man in the last room. All while looking over the entire skyline of Berlin. You must get reservations far in advance and provide them with some identification credentials. Amazing views. Food? Nouvelle cuisine with a German twist but the preparation varies a lot between some well executed dishes and some really terrible preparations. I ordered rabbit and it was dry as dust. Attitude is also a big problem. I've been to other restaurants of this caliber in Berlin and in Southern Germany. Warmth is not a problem. Here it is. The host is stiff. He took our drink order and omitted a thing or two. No waiter/tress for us though for another 15 minutes. I look at the gal who is waiting on the tables to my right and left just standing by the kitchen. Finally she comes over to see what we need. All through the meal she was quite busy at the tables around us but seemed to put us on low priority. By the time I had to get her over to the table for the dessert menu I was quite done with her. The kitchen is open air which apparently isn't to the liking of the chef plating and barking out orders like he's In an enclosed kitchen. I was across the room from him and he was coming in loud and clear. The views are amazing up at this restaurant. The look of the place is five star. Too bad the service team and the kitchen don't have to work hard to draw customers. It makes their B game their best game. read more

My cousin gave us a great tip that if we made reservations for the restaurant, we would be able to bypass the long lines to get into Parliament. So we did so, with the hopes of saving time and having a good meal. The Reichstag building and dome were spectacular with 350 views of Berlin. The restaurant is situated just outside of the dome with a view over Friedrichstrasse Station and many, many landmarks of Berlin. We sat in the atrium and it was beautiful. The food was fabulous (albeit slowly delivered - which allowed us to enjoy the view a little longer). The sweet potato soup with cashews, pumpkin oil and seafare was deep, rich and tantalizing with every spoonful. The risotto was delicious and unexpectedly crunchy due to the perfect sprinkling of walnuts. The braised beef was in an incredible sauce that soaked into the meat and the celeriac puree. My only complaint... the water was much too expensive! 8.5 euros for .75L. Otherwise, I was happy to pay for lunch! read more

You have to go through security and show your passport to enter this restaurant and make reservations at least 24 hours in advance so I expected the service and food to be unparalleled. While the food was good, the service was horrendous. It felt like our server forgot about our entire half of the restaurant, we were exchanging glances with the tables around us and each attempting to get the server's attention to place orders, get needed utensils, and check on the status of orders that took over 40 minutes to be served or were forgotten and needed to be re-submitted to the kitchen. I certainly will not be dining here again. I'd much prefer visiting the beautiful building and the dome than eating at this poor service restaurant. read more

This is a great way to see the Reichstag dome if you can't get tour reservations in advance. By eating breakfast at the restaurant, you get to skip the lines leading to the dome but you can still get the audio guide and do a self tour of the dome. Just make sure to make a reservation for the restaurant. Prices are a little higher for breakfast but the views are breathtaking and the service is great. Breakfast was average. TIP --when you get there go to the restaurant first to get a seat closest to the windows and do the audio tour of the dome on the way down. Many people do the tour and then have breakfast and it gets crowded fast. read more

we had dinner here the other night, and it was quite good. if you opt for either the 4, 5, or 6 course menus, you save a lot of $. however, i was too full, so i just got 2 courses. good thing i did, b/c the portions here are gigantic!! i started w/ the marinated char and had the sea bass as my entree. both were very good. my friend had the scallops, and i tried them, and they were delicious. for dessert, i tried the choc mousse and apple tart, and both were really good and HUGE. the space is beautiful and pristine. read more

What a great place this is! Featuring prompt and efficient German service. Primary draw here is to skip the wait line at the Reichstag which populated with regular folks not about to enjoy a great breakfast and cup of coffee served in a cute ladybug cup. First evening in Berlin and happy to have booked a table here. The setting is splendid, the staff is very friendly and the food was lovely. Prices are a bit higher but ok given the location and overall atmosphere. Quality of the food is very good, as can be expected at Kaefer's. This is a nice little treat to give yourself either to jump the queue at the Reichstag, or to treat yourself to a meal after a tour. We booked a tour and lunch. I allowed 15 minutes from the end of the 90 minute tour to our lunch- and that turned out to be just right. The tour of the Reichstag is free and fantastic. The meals at the restaurant are very good, and not too expensive- though it isn't a deal. My meal cost 17 euros- and was beef, carrots, potatoes and gravy. It was very good. My husband had meatballs that were pretty dry- and I think his meal was 18 euros. Wine was 6 euros. Water was really expensive, so we didn't have any. I hate paying 8 euros for water. Service is a bit slow, but you're there for the view, so it doesn't matter. I wanted a table outside, but I couldn't get one, even though I'd booked months in advance- I've no idea what the problem was. That was a bummer. Don't go with high expectations and you'll probably be pleasantly surprised. read more

The space was chic and bright and the views were good, but the food was underwhelming. I started with the white onion soup (riesling apple, spring onions, truffle croutons, marjoram), which was pretty and aptly prepared, but the apple cube-bits (sourish) in the soup started to become tiring. The date started with the "roof-top" salad (leaf salad, sprouts, goat cheese, grilled bell pepper, roasted bread), which was loaded and tall, but a salad is salad is salad. For my main, the veal meatballs (mustard sauce, potato-cucumber salad, cress, red onion puree), which was attractive and well seasoned; but it was also too busy. The 'potato salad' had too many cornichons. The cress on top was pointless. There was also a fried bread/biscuit type of thing that tasted like Thanksgiving. The date's main was risotto with chanterelles (cherry tomatoes, parmesan cheese, rocket salad, grilled apricot) - also well done, well seasoned, but messy with too many rocket greens on top. Service was fine. Overall, too expensive for the total product. Every dish felt like it was trying too hard to flaunt its chef-school conceits. read more

It was an terrible experience. We were wednessday the first guests. There were only 2 bad tables. The service was bad. No water serving with my double espresso. No cookie or choclate. The espresso was no more than a bit starker coffee. Terrible. No hospitality but hostility. And that for a price we can drink at a terrace, two times so much. The food was well presented with contemporary style and smaller portions. I had fish that was delightful and my son had a beef dish that he enjoyed very much. My wife had a salad with scallops that she thought was sub-par. The view was spectacular for our lunch, but the service was very poor even though the restaurant had few customers. Our server was the hostess and not a reqular server, which could explain this difficulty. We would not return and recommend you take in the view, but eat elsewhere. read more
