I called repair shops around Hercules where I work. Many of them charge $180-$225 just for diagnosis. Singh was responsive and very experienced. He checked the local availability of spark plugs and coil kits that might need replacement before I dropped off my car at his home garage. Singh informed me in a couple of hours that his diagnosis did not produce any error message. He checked all fluid levels and topped up my transmission fluid which was very low. He shared with me pictures of his findings. (I was surprised as I had changed the transmission fluid just 8 months/9K miles ago. Apparently the previous mechanic did not add adequate transmission fluid). He tested drive and confirmed my car does not skipping acceleration or shaking after the stop. Singh is knowledgeable and professional, fair in pricing (I was charged reasonable diagnosis fee + nominal fee for transmission fluid). Thank you, Singh!

They also replaced the engine air filter and cabin filter without my approval, claiming there was mold, even though I specifically asked them not to change anything unnecessary. I was charged about $700. The problem was not fixed. When I returned, instead of standing behind their previous diagnosis, they charged me again, this time about $900 to add head gasket sealant and additional labor. They charged $350 in labor just to pour sealant into the radiator, which is excessive. After spending a total of about $1,600, the original problem is still unresolved. I had already explained the full history of the vehicle and previous diagnostic inaccuracies, but this was ignored. They relied entirely on the scan tool instead of listening to the customer or properly investigating the root cause. To make matters worse, when I returned to discuss the unresolved issue, I was treated unprofessionally and was told they would not work on my car anymore. Instead of taking responsibility for incorrect diagnoses, they continued charging for trial-and-error repairs without results. I understand troubleshooting is a process, but charging large amounts for incorrect fixes without resolving the problem or offering accountability is unacceptable. I would not recommend this shop.

My mother was charged $1700 and not long after the engine light came on with codes for misfire and would drive very rough. Ended up taking it to Square Deal in Pinole to find out that the coils put on at K & L were very low quality, three were not seated correctly, and the screw on one was so cross threaded that it couldn't be removed. I believe K&L can do great work on older cars, but since all my family's cars are newer, we will have to find a new mechanic.

They do top quality repair work. They are honest and upfront on what needs to be done. Back in January, we noticed that our car was leaking some type of fluids, and over heating. In a panic, we stopped by Square Deal, and they were to take us even though they were super busy that day. A few days later we had our car back with all the necessary repairs done. Fast forward to last Friday, I noticed some fluids leaking under the front of the car again. I took my car to Square Deal, and they ran all the necessary diagnostics and found nothing leaking or any broken hoses. It turned out to be condensation from the AC. The pricing is competitive and if they see something else that needs to be done other than the original issues, they would call and let me know before proceeding with the repairs. They are a family owned and local and conveniently located in downtown Pinole. Brian and Paunch(sp?) are super nice, helpful and knowledgeable. I can't say enough about Square Deal Garage.
