After living in Vallejo for years and years, I finally found Fred & Sons Automotive Repair. As the 2nd car owner of a 1982 Nissan Datsun Sentra wagon, I've worked with more than a handful of other mechanics in town to keep this little gem safely on the road. Fred is the best. He's a gifted mechanic, and he's a problem solver. He has the equipment, the knowledge, the skill, and the expertise to do the most challenging automotive repairs. Initially, Fred detected and solved my ongoing engine overheating problem by following and securing an electrical wire. Later, he used his shop press to replace the control arm bushings on my vintage car. When my engine failed, he rebuilt my carburetor without complaint because he knows "how to do it." Little Betty's now running like a champ. Most recently Fred solved a mysterious brake fluid leak through the process of checking and rechecking. I was impressed by his patience and determination in finding the source. As it turned out, it was the brake regulator valve. Located on the bulkhead behind the engine, it was a difficult job. Nevertheless, by "bending one of his tools" to reach it, Fred was able to successfully replace the valve. Fred provides fair and reasonable rates. He also provides reliable and timely service. For many years, we have been taking all of our vehicles to Fred & Son's for our auto needs that I can't believe I haven't done a positive yelp review for him yet. Remember those days when you take your car to the dealership for routine maintenance and they come back with things that they "discovered" that need to be fixed which costs an arm and a leg? That's when we looked up local mechanics in the yellow pages (no internet then) and came across Fred and Sons. We told Fred what the dealership said needs to be fixed; he would look at it and tells us if the repair is even needed and if so, his services cost way less than the dealerships were charging. At times Fred would even visually point out fixes needed to our vehicles. He even shows us diagnostic readings if the engine light is on and explains its meaning for us to understand. Fred & sons is inarguably the best auto repair shop in town! They have friendly, reliable and knowledgable staff and owner. They are also very honest which I can't say is true with other shops. They really go out of their way to help and accommodate you. My car battery died and needed replacement. We tried to jumpstart but it wasn't working. So Fred even went as far as helping me get my car towed to his shop. The battery he ordered came straight from Mercedes Benz. My car was done within the day. Made an account with yelp and copy pasted my google maps review of this place. I saw that he had a Yelp review sticker on his store so I had expected great service from this shop. I had also received a tip from his neighbor that Fred & Sons does TPMS, I had went to the shop got them replaced and paid for the service to program them. Once I got the call my car was ready he gave me an explanation that the dashboard light will still be lit up and I would need to drive the car a bit. it has been several months later and the dashboard light has remained on. I had called him several times over the course of two month since the install and he keeps stringing me on, always with the promise of they will fix the issue. His reason was his TPMS tool was dropped and he is getting it fixed. From the time of writing this it has been over four months now if his story held true, which is unacceptable for a company to not offer a service for four whole months. He keeps saying anytime now the tech will come with his sensor or next week it should be fixed. I had left them my number and he has not called me once for an update since I had stopped inquiring him. I am not knowledgeable about car maintenance so I called a different shop for TPMS and was told that TPMS are not standardized so their device could possibly not work with the sensors installed on my car. I am now down 450$ with a possibility of having to go to multiple shops or replace the TPMS system entirely again. read more

Put your shades on, this is going to be GLOWING!!! My engine sounded very loud one morning but I need to go to Tracy, as in urgent. Came back and let it sit because I was afraid it was going to blow a piston or something. I didn't know where to take it, and my husband recommended Fred and Sons, who were recomended to him. Monday morning: dropped off car before opening time, got a rental and let my husband handle the rest. Luckily he was off. Husband called to tell me it was my muffler pipe, which is cheap, but the dragging of the pipe ended up cracking the catalytic converter casing. Not an after market piece of equpment ($1,700). Then Fred tells my husband,, "I think we can weld it ". A bit over $400 later my car was good to go. Only needed rental car 1 day, and they saved me $1,300. I would take my car back here any time for any reason. I'm recommending that you take your car problems here first, even if you already have a mechanic. I belive you will be in for a happy surprise. And if not cheaper, better, or more honest... take it to your other shop. But I doubt that will happen. read more

This is my first review ever I think but had to give give my recommendations to Fred and Son's. My old mini van didn't want to start all of a sudden so the gas station guy recommended I had it towed to Fred and Son's. Me being frazzled by the whole thing I must have called over there like 5 different times to try to coordinate since the tow truck kept being late and it was close to closing time and every time they were very friendly and the quote they gave me over the phone turned out to be exactly what I had to pay. I had my Catalytic Converter stolen off my vehicle. it's my daily driver and needed to fix it ASAP. a quick search on google shows Fred and Son's. My car eas making a weird metallic rubbing sound. The shop replaced the brake pads, rotor, calipers, and piston. When I got my cat back it began to make the same sound a few days later. Fred was kind enough to replace the parts again at no charge. So far, my car seems to be fine. read more

I bought a car with running flat tires. These tires were popping like balloons when I ran into potholes so I kept coming back to the dealer. They would simply replace the tires which were not cheap. They even discouraged me from replacing with the regular tires. I was wondering if they are patronizing the brand that they are using. First of all I'd like to say that I've been having Fred service my car (s) for well over twenty years..He has always done an excellent job, in fact I can say that he kept my first car, an 87 Escort Gt running well for 270,000 + miles until I finally sold it cuz I needed a truck..My latest story is this: My Dodge 1500 overheated while towing my boat to Lake Berryessa.. To make a long story short, I had my truck towed to an automotive repair shop in Benicia that I won't mention but has been known to be a reputable shop..This shop diagnosed my truck as having a blown head gasket and the cost to repair was going to run over $3000 .. I then called Fred, whom I should have gone to in the first place to see if he would take a look at it for a second opinion..So I had my truck towed towed to his shop..Fred tested my truck several times then called me with the Good News..He said "Greg, I tested your truck and it doesn't have a blown head gasket, I don't know why your truck was diagnosed with a blown head gasket"..I was totally relieved...Fred told me that my water pump was the culprit..He changed my water pump and recommended some other things to service because of the "overheating" like hoses, a thermostat and such..I say "Fred, you are the man"!!! Thank You so much for running an honest business..That is why you've been in business for so many years and have a loyal customer base..Fred saved me $$$Thousands$$$.. Fred has been our mechanic for many years and has kept our over 10 year old cars running! We have always been very pleased with his skills and costs. Earlier this month, he serviced the back window of my Cadillac Catera. I didn't know he did windows! I had been caring for my spouse at a nearby hospital and called Fred for a referral. When he checked with the dealer, their cost was high three figures. So he ordered a used part instead which cost a third of the dealer's price. To make a long story short, my car had been in an accident. I had my car towed to Fred & Son's , the tow guy was friends with the owner there. He believed nothing was wrong with my car, and proceeded to tell the owner of Fred & Son's his opinion. Anyway, I got charged $85 for a diagnostic, and was told nothing was wrong with my car, but my car went out on the freeway again. This time my sister was in the car with her baby. I asked the owner if he could have my car towed to his shop and check my car out again. He said no, I would have to have my car towed, and he would take a look, and he refused to give me my money back. So I went to another auto body shop, they towed my car for free, and really checked my car, it was a sensor underneath my car that had been knocked out of place. If you want good customer service, where they really care, and they're not just trying to rip you off because you're a woman, and they think you're stupid? Don't ever go to this place. my name is David and my truck just happen to break down near Fred and sons auto while i was traveling toward Marin i was driving my 98 dodge 2500 pickup with a diesel engine i made a phone call to the closest shop to where i was broke down which was Fred and sons auto i talked to who i believed was the owner by phone and asking him if he worked on diesel based on when i was talking to him i can tell that he really knows what hes talking about so i decided to go down to his shop and talk to him in person not only that i appreciate that he gave me an idea how to fix my own truck but i was so impressed that i decided to let him handle the whole thing the next day before noon he called me and let me know exactly what was going on about my truck and gave me estimate price to get it running you know their is a lot of shops that just take all the money that they can get from you just for the curiosity i called the dealer to get a second opinion on the price and man he was 300 dollars cheaper so i told him to go ahead and do the job he told me it would get done between 4 and 5 the same day and good enough he called me at 4pm stating the truck is ready i was so impressed the way this man handles his business my truck was done and i was satisfied with the work and i recommend this shop to everybody i know its one of the best shops i deal with so far thanks David read more
