    Everything bagel w cream cheese

Small store, pretty packed at the time that I went. This place is so much better than Layla bagels like wildly. I only got the everything bagel, but it was pretty good. I mean look at it. Filled me up really fast so I did not finish the whole thing, but I think it was worth the shorter weight and the bagels are much thicker and fresher than Layla's which is right next door. Deserves the hype Layla gets!

Located in the lovely Ocean Park neighborhood is my absolute favorite bagel and bread spot! In my humble opinion, they have the best challah and gravlax bagels. This weekend I also tried the malted chocolate bread pudding, and I was blown away. But what really makes the experience at Jyan Isaac is the staff; Virginia and Alex are warm, friendly, and always genuinely happy to help. Gives it a community feel!

I came to this cafe after seeing how popular it was when I visited Layla's. I have to say that the selection of bread and pastries were great, especially for the price. Had the chocolate chip cookie, and chocolate chips were in every bite that I had-- delicious! The service was quick and there were plenty of outdoor seating in the back of the shop. The gravlax works was good, although I had wish it came with more vegetables. There are options to upgrade your cream cheese like scallion cream. Would definitely come back for their pastries and bread.

HELLO THE BAGEL IS HUGE?? I find it extremely fascinating how Layla Bagels is right next door, although after having tried Jyan Isaac, I think they serve different audiences. Jyan Isaac has more diverse offerings beyond bagels, from bread to pastries, and their cream cheese is absolutely heavenly with its stronger flavor, reminiscent of Courage Bagels' cream cheese. The combination of everything actually on the bagel wins the Layla Laika but there's definitely still some room for improvement in the produce quality when compared to their competitor next door. However, there is no line here and a lot more seating while still capturing the vast majority of the bagel-eating experience!

Stopped by Juan Isaac Bread for breakfast this morning. 1. Salmon roe on sesame bagel with cream cheese and red onion: pungent, savory and delicious. The sesame bagel gave it extra flavor and crunch. The salmon roe popped in my mouth. It was fun to eat. Loved the flavor, texture and presentation. 2. Huckleberry scone - the sugar on top of the scone gave every bite a nice crunch. It was substantial and not dry. Very good. Service was excellent. There is a super cute fenced-in courtyard in the back. I really enjoyed sitting back there sipping my Americano while biting into the creamy bagel sandwich and sweet scone. I did all this while basking in the fall LA sunshine. I couldn't have asked for a better moment. It was utterly blissful. Namaste.

Cookie was AMAZING so many chocolate chips and it was both crunchy and chewy in the center - 8.5/10. My only complaint is that they can't warm it up and its a bit tooo sweet. The miso caramel latte was really good but again very sweet and the miso made it salty... interesting to try but would not get again. Overall, 8/10 drink + cookie and overall great service and vibes!!

This is such a delightful weekend stop after Pilates down the street. Tiny shop that always smells of something savory being baked. Grab a sourdough loaf, sweet pastry, coffee, or slice of pizza and eat at the tables along Ocean Park or the hideaway in the back yard. I go for the tomato, caper, olive oil on everything bagel with cream cheese. Chef's kiss. Excellent staff, great selection, consistent quality, line is never too long. Overall win.

Looooved the sandwiches and service here today. Already loved their pastries and bread but these sandwiches (especially the chicken katsu!!!) were great. The yuzu kusho in the sando was perfect, not too overwhelming and perfectly rounded out the bite. Tuna melt was nice but had a liiittle too much going on for me (I'm a plain Jane tuna melt girl but don't regret trying it). Can't wait to come back and try the French onion grilled cheese next visit and a different slice.

I have been wanting to try this spot for quite some time because I have only heard great things about their bagel and bakery options. This little stretch of restaurants can get very busy, especially on weekends, so parking can be a bit of a challenge during the busy times. We were able to find a free spot in neighborhood behind the restaurant about a half block away so we got lucky, but also came early. The line here can get long sometimes, but it moves fast and I did not have to wait very long at all for my order. The menu is quite small, but it has a lot of great options on it and what really sets this place apart is just their overall bagel taste and quality; they are top-notch. They also have a lot of great bakery options from sweet to savory. Inside is small so the best place to sit will be outdoors right in front or just get it to go. For our first visit we chose the Gravlax Works on an Everything Bagel and a Bacon, Egg, & Cheese on a Plain Bagel. The Gravlax was fantastic. It's basically a lox bagel but elevated. The difference between the works and plain is the works has tomato and dill. The smoked salmon was really delicate and overall it was just one of the better ones that I've had in quite some time. The BEC was also very good however, I am not a fan of thick cut bacon and would much prefer crispy bacon instead so that is my only criticism it. Overall, we had a great experience and I'm already eager to come back again soon to try more items. I would recommend to anyone in the area and would say it is worth driving out of your way to go here.

    These heirloom tomatoes were fantastic

I've been to Jyan Bread twice now, and both times I was helped by Josue (hope I spelled his name right!). He is incredibly kind, helpful, and took the time to explain how their sourdough process works. You can tell he really enjoys his job, and his great service made my visits memorable. Their sourdough bread is unique and unlike anything store-bought and you can truly taste the difference. The first time I went, I ordered the bagel with heirloom tomatoes. The tomatoes were so fresh and juicy, absolutely delicious! The only downside was that the bagel itself was super salty. Next time, I'd probably get it without the added salt. I also ordered a loaf of sourdough bread to take home, so so good with butter and jam. On my second visit, I ordered a sesame bagel, and it also tasted a little salty. I'm not sure if that's just how the sourdough is or if extra salt is added, but overall, I still really enjoy their bagels. The lines can get long, but it's worth it for the quality and flavor. Thanks again to Josue for the outstanding service, he's a gem!

There's an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm in which Larry David orders a scone at Mocha Joe's coffee shop. He complains that the scone is a little soft and that it's more like a muffin than a scone, and then tells Mocha Joe, "You might have a looser definition of scone than I do." My trip to Jyan Isaac Bread reminded me of this scene. No, I didn't get a scone. And no, I didn't get into an argument at Jyan Isaac's. But I did order a bagel made by someone who has a looser definition of bagel than I do. The bagels looked good sitting on the shelf behind the counter, but when I picked it up, my fingers easily dented the crust and I knew I had chosen poorly. This was just a piece of round bread. The crust was soft with only a hint of chew, and the inside was as fluffy as Wonderbread. The flavor was nice, but it wasn't a bagel - a bagel should have a firm crust and a dense, chewy interior. I also tried the pain aux raisin, which is a type of viennoiserie that is supposed to have crisp edges and a flaky interior studded with raisins and crème pâtissière. Jyan Isaac's was neither flaky nor crisp, and while it had some raisins, it didn't taste like much of anything. My neighbor compared it (unfavorably) to Entenmann's. I've heard people rave about the bread here, so maybe I'll come back at some point and try something else. But I don't think I'll be rushing back. The service was friendly, and the place looked nice. There was some seating outside, and when I visited, there was no line.

For clarity, the baked goods are extraordinary and we like them very much. However, Jyan has been bizarrely unable to fix its delivery system for over two months, and, if you go to any of the third party delivery sites (including the delivery option on Jyan's own site), you are told that the store is closed. A silly option is to order from a third-party store called Ghisallo's, but it only processes orders later in the day when many of Jyan's popular items are already sold out. The foregoing is simply inexcusable: If Jyan doesn't want any delivery business, it should just admit it.

    Wild Alaskan Salmon Roe
    Austin B.

tl;dr the loaves alone are splurge-worthy, but don't miss out on the excellent open-faced bagel creations As with many new-era bakeries around Los Angeles, Jyan Isaac Bread started as a pandemic-borne pop-up. Isaac, a disciple of lauded Venice bakery Gjusta, began by selling loaves directly out of his family's kitchen before opening his Ocean Park brick-and-mortar space. Since then, Isaac has garnered plenty of fanfare, including recognition from the LA Times and Food & Wine magazine. A semi-enclosed streetery blocks a full view of the slate-grey storefront. Inside, the cozy cafe is warmly lit by semi-opaque glass lighting fixtures. Shelves are stocked with breads, books, and beverage-ware. Wood-topped barstools are pressed up to the narrow counter that lines the kitchen. Low-key instrumental jazz plays from a speaker above the front entrance. My partner and I arrived for mid-morning weekend breakfast, and we faced a short but slow-moving line. We opted for a Wild Alaskan Salmon Roe half-bagel. Isaac's bagel immediately reminded me of Courage Bagel's signature roe creation, and the quality wasn't too far off. I was impressed by the slightly charred everything bagel and the generous helping of briny roe, although I found the red onion portion to be overwhelming. The bagel itself had an excellently poofy bread with a chewy, heavily seeded skin. Meanwhile, our hefty, presliced loaf of Seeded Sourdough was extra-seeded and extra-sour; it struck me as a step up from the best Whole Foods option. While service took orders at a snail's pace, our bagel was prepared in a matter of minutes. Both the half-bagel and the loaf ran for $12 each. As a loyal Courage follower, I still concede that Jyan Issac churns out some of the city's best bagels (better, even, than the wildly popular Layla Bagel right next door). The stellar bread loaves are a welcome added plus.

Perhaps I should have ordered a bakery/bread item given that's what they're known for. The omelette had no flavor and the cheese definitely didn't taste sharp. Something in the herbs also didn't go with the eggs (perhaps tarragon?). The included salad was overdressed and too vinegary for my taste. The cappuccino came out cold and I asked to have it heated up, and they gladly made a new one for me. Also, the loud music blaring at 8am when trying to have a conversation was annoying. We were delighted with the box of cookies and tarts that they brought from Paderia in Santa Monica. The chocolate chip walnut cookies were fat and soft with a slightly crisp exterior. The thickness of them allowed a plethora of rich chips to reside inside. I'm not a fan of chunks of nuts in cookies but these were chopped in tiny pieces, so did not take away from the overall soft texture. The soft peanut butter chocolate cookie was also a huge fattie with peanut butter chips within the chocolate cookie. Both were enhanced with a quick warm-up. I loved both of these cookies and think the chocolate chip is the very best you'll ever find. We also had Portuguese egg tarts. The pastel de nata (if I recall, this is what they are called) I ate was small but good, but I have had others that were more to my liking, with a sweeter custard and a more caramelized top, which I guess is a personal preference. Not to say it wasn't delicious - it was! I love the cookies so much I'll be checking out their Irvine location soon, which is much closer to me.

Also, I didn't tell him it was an apple cream cheese pie and he definitely didn't seem to notice any cream cheese notes to it, so... The berry pie was lacking in flavor. It needed some more sugar or moisture or something. And the crust was also very lack luster. Even though it looked like it had some flaky layers to it, it was kind of dense and dry. Disappointing to spend 20 dollars on two slices of pie only to be let down. Service was prompt and friendly, though, so at least there's that.

No seating inside but plenty outdoors, although the closer to the entrance, you need to talk loudly above the music. I went late (to meet a friend) at 1pm. Few choices in the pastry section though it looked like they would replenish, which they barely did an hour later. Here's what I got: FRENCH SILK PIE - OMG, the chocolate mousse like filling was butter. Thick but light. The crust was dry and too thick but I could smother myself with the filling. PEANUT BUTTER HONEY RICE KRISPY - Very large, cereal was too compressed and dense. The pb flavor was fresh and natural but I did not taste honey. The marshmallow fluff on top was unnecessary but the few blobs inside the krispy was a nice textural difference. Both were $6 each. I can see why they can't sustain their business.
