They're certainly not the cheapest, but everything was fresh and great quality. We also took a cinnamon roll, a seasonal cornmeal cake (blueberry) and a chocolate chip cookie home - all very good. Pastries were all tasty but can be quite expensive. For example, a squatty-sized slice of banana cream pie was $10! And a small ham and cheese croissant was $7.75...yikes. The only one I thought that was reasonably priced was the ultra scrumptious brown butter chocolate chip cookie with flaked sea salt ($3.50). Coffee marble cake ($6.50) and gluten-free tahini brownie ($5) were yummy. I can't remember what the sausage roll tasted like, but I do remember it being a hefty $8. while the food was okay, i felt for the price and portion sizes, i would not come again. my friend and i were lucky and found parking on the street right by the restaurant. the outdoor patio is cute, with plenty of seating suitable for all party sizes. it was quite confusing upon entrance at first as a first-timer. there are separate order counters, one for bread/pastries and another for food. you have to grab a ticket from the right side of the wall (which me and some customers couldn't find at first) and they will call your number to go order at the cashier. once you order, they give you a table number so they can bring the order wherever you decide to sit at. i got a build your own sandwich. it was $0.70 or $0.75 for capers and cucumber & radish, $7 for lox, $2 for open-faced bread. the sourdough toast was good, the ingredients tasted fresh, but i still don't think it justifies the hefty price. my friend got a shakshuka which was also solid, but i've had better. additionally, the portion sizes are small. you can get fresh full or halve loaves of bread. read more

Decided to check out Venice Beach today and went to Gjusta for lunch. We ordered a pecan roll from their bakery items to start off. It was light a fluffy but wished there was more pecans as it was not sweet enough. It was more croissant like but good nonetheless. For our entrees we got the pastrami sandwich and breakfast burrito. The pastrami sandwich was a little oily but it was flavorful. The pastrami was also a little salty for my taste. The bread was nice and crunchy which was a plus. The breakfast burrito was good. You can taste all the ingredients inside. It was just a little saucy as it was leaking the liquids inside. This is a nice area to people watch and soak up the LA sun. Most of their seating is outside with a few seats inside and patio area. They are dog friendly but not in the patio area. Most of their items on their menu were averaging about $20 which is not bad for the area. Did not get to try their cafe area as we were going to grab coffee at another place but others were ordering it. Nice environment and place to people watch and everyone was friendly. I gave it 4 on 5 stars because of the eye-watering pricing. I got a veggie sandwich and after taxes it was close to $24. It didn't leave me full and didn't come with any accoutrements or sides. It was delicious. Sesame whole wheat bread was excellent. Toppings were fresh, from peperonata, fennel, tomato, cucumber, radish, pickled turnips, herbs & sprouts, avocado and hummus. I just find it hard to justify $24 for a veggie sandwich. Esp. when Bread Head on Montana has an equally compelling one for $16. Or there are excellent Bun mi's for under $15. Even the cheese store on Beverly Hills has their immaculate La Zucca for $19. The flavors are excellent. Everything is great. Except for the Erewohn level pricing. I loved meandering through their small shop and the art gallery next door. Stepping onto their patio, I felt like I was hanging out in the backyard of a rustic farmhouse. Very charming. Here's where the emotional rollercoaster began: 1/5 Chopped Italian Salad - Not the Chopped Italian being chopped! This was quite disappointing...there was too much acidity, and the structure of a chopped Italian was lost here. The cheese choice was also off. Not sure what cauliflower was doing here. I had previously given a 5-Star review, but decided to change it based on a recent experience. I really try to never leave bad reviews, but I came here with my fiance to get coffee and bring our laptops to do some work in the afternoon. We ordered at the express counter and they told us to wait for our drinks at the other end of the counter. I found a seat outside and they made me leave because I didn't have a white number on the table and my drinks were not "for here", but they never asked me if I wanted them for here when I ordered. I'm all about playing by the rules, however nowhere did they say you can only sit on a bench or inside at the bar if you're not buying food basically. I can appreciate Gjusta is a popular place and always crowded, but there were other people at tables with only drinks working on laptops and there was no issue for them. By that point, they won't take your order because you don't have a ticket, even though you've already been waiting in line. Meanwhile, there are dozens of people behind you. It's a completely unnecessary and frustrating system. Unfortunately, the food doesn't make up for it. I ordered the Croque Madame, and it was easily one of the worst versions I've ever had. The flavor was bland and underwhelming, and honestly, even the napkin seemed more appetizing. The coffee was okay, but nothing special. The service from the wait staff was actually pretty good, and the employees I interacted with were friendly. My issue is more with the overall operation and the quality of the food. The tables also weren't particularly clean, which didn't help the experience. For a place that gets this much hype, I expected significantly better. Stopped by Gjusta to pick up a sourdough loaf and immediately understood why people love this place so much. The bread is exceptional. Deeply flavorful, perfectly textured, and the kind of loaf you start planning meals around the second you get home. The pastry selection looked absolutely divine, and the whole space has that beautiful balance of rustic bakery, neighborhood market, and elevated food hall. Shelves lined with honey, olive oils, preserves, and little specialty goods make it impossible not to wander around for a bit longer than intended. The Italian sandwich is a meal on its own-a ciabatta baguette, sopressata, mortadella, ham, chopped escarole, pickled peppers, tomatoes, onions, fontina, mayonnaise and vinaigrette. This sandwich is HUGE! Just a warning...We also had the Pork and Beef Meatball sandwich on ciabatta with burrata and parmesan. Personally, I would have loved more cheese but the sandwich was solid. We also had the shortbread, walnut, and cardamom cookies which my shortbread aficionado friend proclaimed, "delicious." I, on the other had, had what I think might be LA's best sea salt chocolate chip cookie. I really wanted to love Gjusta. The atmosphere is great, the patio is beautiful, and the breakfast burrito had good flavor with bacon, eggs, melted cheese, and a tasty green salsa. What really ruined the experience, though, was the service. My $20 breakfast burrito arrived well before my $5.50 cappuccino, which made no sense. I waited over 30 minutes for the coffee and had to ask three separate times where it was. Finally, I walked inside, saw a barista making a cappuccino, and asked, "Is that for Table 100?" It was. Only then did it finally make its way to my table. That's simply unacceptable. Spending nearly $28 for breakfast sets a certain expectation. I don't mind paying premium prices for premium food and service, but this visit didn't deliver either. The food was good--not exceptional--and the service fell well below what I'd expect at this price point. I can see why people like Gjusta, and I hope this was just an off day, but based on this experience, it's hard to justify the cost. The showcases were nicely displayed and labeled. I ordered my usual, butter croissant. I also saw a Tahini croissant that I wanted to try. Gjusta adds on 15% for employees benefits and I gave them an additional 5% tip. The Tahini croissant was not what I expected. I expected a tangy filling. Instead, it was sweet inside. The croissant was soft and had an aftertaste. Very disappointed. Then I had the butter croissant. Soft, not crunchy. No buttery taste. If you blindfold me and gave me this croissant and ask me where it was made, I would say Costco. This croissant doesn't deserve a passing grade.
