Also, you don't have to stick strictly to the menu -- you can ask to add anything to your bagel or remove certain ingredients, basically customize it however you like. The management of this establishment is extremely lackluster, weak, and all over the place in the worst ways. The menu is seemingly impressive on paper with a ton of promise, but $22 for a Banh Mi sandwich, for example, when it was most definitely the weakest one that I have ever indulged in my life, speaks much to the whole vibe of the cafe across the spectrum of pledge and delivery which brings immediate disappointment. Also, $25 for a salmon roe bagel?.... Really? It most definitely rests on the location and soaking in tourism to Venice than worthwhile merits from the food, system, or service. Even for the Westside by the beach, these prices for what you try to enjoy are comically absurd. You order your items, take a number to a table that you find for yourself, and overpay for fairly simple food handed from a perpetually new employee seemingly every instance since the management must be on some tax write-off crusade to introduce and show the exit to "employees" quicker than any anecdotal measurement. If you patronize this establishment, it's wholly and only due to seeing other transplants to our city cruising through "hip" places in entitled belief that overpaying for simple food, when little of it is fresh beyond bread items, along with seating yourself, is a status-bringing activity as long as others of that ilk see them too. There are a zillion fantastic, local places to indulge in our wonderful city that employs locals, delivers wonderful cuisine and service on their own merits, and treats Los Angeles as a largely working-class place than this depressingly distorted perception that it must be a perpetual front and flex like everywhere is Bel Air or Bev Hills shown on reality TV. This establishment is placating to the latter nonsense because nouveau riche transplants, or mostly those faking being exactly that from everywhere except LA which makes up most of them, feel warmly validated by paying over $20 for a simple bagel with toppings as long as they can show on their social media that they sat outside with their league, so to speak, at a supposedly hipster cafe in Venice like they're supporting local business when this establishment has an admitted reputation for treating their workers like complete garbage. Ask locals about similar places to find worthwhile vibes, better food, and locations in and around the same area on and off Sunset Ave in Venice along with other places. This one ain't it. read more

Decided to check out Venice Beach today and went to Gjusta for lunch. We ordered a pecan roll from their bakery items to start off. It was light a fluffy but wished there was more pecans as it was not sweet enough. It was more croissant like but good nonetheless. For our entrees we got the pastrami sandwich and breakfast burrito. The pastrami sandwich was a little oily but it was flavorful. The pastrami was also a little salty for my taste. The bread was nice and crunchy which was a plus. The breakfast burrito was good. You can taste all the ingredients inside. It was just a little saucy as it was leaking the liquids inside. This is a nice area to people watch and soak up the LA sun. Most of their seating is outside with a few seats inside and patio area. They are dog friendly but not in the patio area. Most of their items on their menu were averaging about $20 which is not bad for the area. Did not get to try their cafe area as we were going to grab coffee at another place but others were ordering it. Nice environment and place to people watch and everyone was friendly. I left Gjusta feeling like I rode an emotional rollercoaster. Parking was decent on a Saturday afternoon. We grabbed a ticket at the front and waited about 25 minutes to order at the counter. I loved meandering through their small shop and the art gallery next door. Stepping onto their patio, I felt like I was hanging out in the backyard of a rustic farmhouse. Very charming. Here's where the emotional rollercoaster began: 1/5 Chopped Italian Salad - Not the Chopped Italian being chopped! This was quite disappointing...there was too much acidity, and the structure of a chopped Italian was lost here. The cheese choice was also off. Not sure what cauliflower was doing here. Overall, a really dry, unpalatable salad. 5/5 Iced Flat Whites - I saw another Yelper post these, and I can confirm they are as delicious as they look. 4/5 Pastrami Reuben - One of the better pastrami reubens I've had. The rye was the star of the show. Even though it was a pastrami sandwich, it felt light and healthy. Pickle was a NO. Not tangy, but very salty and watery. N/A Tuna Conserva - Only took one bite. 100000/5 Banana Cream Pie - CARRIED this meal. Not too sweet = perfection. The crust was my favorite part. I would order a whole pie. This was a $26 bagel so pretty insane. I got the bialy onion bagel which was good but really toasted and crispy, I wish they left it a little more chewy. Loved the outdoor cafe experience and the plethora of pastry and bread options. I settled on a pretty basic but delicious breakfast sandwich and was disappointed I could not sub out the gluten free bread that was clearly listed on the menu. No substitutions. My wife really enjoyed the chocolate croissant. The breakfast burrito was a bit pricey and had too many potatoes, as seen in the photo. It was an artsy take on the dish, which we enjoyed, but the price was steep, so we probably won't order it again. The lattes were decent. The service was a bit spotty because they were busy. We had to get our own napkins, which wasn't a big deal. I was surprised that gratuity was automatically added to the bill, regardless of the party size. Overall, everything was expensive, and I'm not sure the value was there, but it was a place we could check off the list. It's been a hot minute since I've eaten here (maybe not since they first opened?), but I had some money to burn for a team lunch and decided to treat myself to Gjusta. What with the delivery fees, I could only get a breakfast burrito and a cookie, but they were both amazing. The flavors manage somehow to be both simple and sophisticated at the same time. OVERALL: I DREAM OF GJUSTA. Gjusta is one of those Westside LA staples where the weekend line is guaranteed to be long, but almost always worth the wait. That said I strongly prefer going a weekday off-peak hours to avoid the line. On a Saturday or Sunday, you can easily wait 45 minutes just to place your order. Now the food. This is hands down my favorite breakfast / brunch / lunch spot in all of Los Angeles, and dinner would join that list if they offered it. I have worked my way through much of the menu and can honestly say I have never ordered a dish that did not hit. Standouts include their iconic in-house baked bread (seeded rye is my personal fave), the salmon bowl topped with romesco sauce, the massive steak and eggs plate (offered weekends only), and of course the famous fish plate that comes with 3-5 cured fishes of your choosing served with bread and all the fixings. I highly recommend ordering family style with friends so you can taste the rainbow. On the sweets side, Gjusta is famous for its pastries, but for me it's the tahini brownie and the chocolate avocado mousse. Both are a dream for chocolate lovers. On the service, some people take issue with the service style here since they are not big on modifications or extra requests, but I always leave Gjusta feeling deeply satiated and genuinely happy. You just have to go knowing that there might be a wait, and you should be ready and decisive when placing your order. On the ambiance, the environment is effortlessly charming with an international feel, and a communal courtyard vibe where you are just as likely to run into a neighbor as you are the star of the last movie you watched. The olive trees add a subtle Italian flair and there is a palpable levity to the outside area. In conclusion, I used to crave Erewhon when I leave LA. These days, I dream of Gjusta. read more

This morning I was at the Santa Monica farmers market. I decided to try the croissants at Gjusta. They had high ratings from various sources of making one of best croissant in LA. Gjusta is located in a residential area of Venice. There's free street parking in the area. When you walk in, they have 2 lines. One for dine in and the other for express order. The showcases were nicely displayed and labeled. I ordered my usual, butter croissant. I also saw a Tahini croissant that I wanted to try. Gjusta adds on 15% for employees benefits and I gave them an additional 5% tip. The Tahini croissant was not what I expected. I expected a tangy filling. Instead, it was sweet inside. The croissant was soft and had an aftertaste. Very disappointed. Then I had the butter croissant. Soft, not crunchy. No buttery taste. If you blindfold me and gave me this croissant and ask me where it was made, I would say Costco. This croissant doesn't deserve a passing grade. I got the brisket bahn mi this time. It was alright. It was a little messy to eat since a lot of the items fell out and pretty pricey but that is expected since it's venice.
