Appalachian Caviar Service
Cleo G.

I'm a sucker for tasting menus, and while everything we had at June was good, nothing was out of this world memorable. I do think that the portion sizes are very small, even for a tasting menu. The plates are *exquisitely* presented and there is a very big emphasis on really delicate and complimentary flavor pairings that I thoroughly enjoyed. I would also like to say that this was the tasting menu with the longest pause in between ordering/getting food and in between each course. The spaces in between courses were a little lengthy for my liking, and sometimes I even wondered if they were even coming with the next course. However, the staff themselves were absolutely great. I got a purse hook right as I walked in, they refilled our waters/replaced our utensils with frequency and precision, and each of our dishes was professionally and thoroughly described to us. We got the 8 course Discovery Menu, but with this menu you get choices, and since we were two, we decided to get different dishes so we could taste them all. Here were my thoughts: -Day Aged Pillowcase Country Ham: 7.5/10 - The flat piece of ham is served on top of a fruit leather, and you roll them up like a fruit roll up to eat. The sweetness of the fruit leather was very complimentary to the salty meatiness of the ham, but the whole thing was quite chewy and was very reminiscent of eating your average prosciutto. -Appalachian "Caviar" Service: 10/10 - Absolutely Ingenious. A perfectly pillowy soft okra seed pancake is topped with rich egg yolk fudge (!!!), pickled egg white, and pickled okra seeds that pop in the mouth delicately and deliciously. The flavors melded together splendidly, tasting both rich and fresh at the same time. The presentation was outstanding as well. Favorite dish of the night, -Bay Scallop & Bay Laurel: 6/10 - Not my favorite flavor. My father really enjoyed this, but felt that the taste of the bay laurel meringue was too overwhelming. It is also a very small bite, -Foie Gras & Watermelon: 9.5/10 - So clever!! Watermelon 3 ways (leathered, freeze dried, and pickled) stood alongside a rich, buttery, almost garlicky strip of foie gras. I adore foie gras, and the contrast in textures coming from the freeze dried watermelon and the sweet-savory relationship between the fruit and the meat really shined. -Ossabaw Pork, Pop Corn Grits: 9/10 - The pork was really rich and delicious, and was cooked to perfection. The sauce underneath was more of just an average Worcestershire sort of sauce, but I think it actually went really well with the meat. The grits were a surprise, as they actually tasted very chocolatey! I've never tasted grits like these, and so I was really taken aback by this new flavor combination, though the taste was definitely subdued. -Sakura Masu: 9/10 - As my waitress poured a rich sauce over the fish, she told me this was her favorite dish. While I won't say it was my #1, I can definitely understand why. The white fish is so delicately cooked, and the sauce on top has a creamy, soft umaminess that I tend to just love. The presentation before the sauce was poured was magnificent as well, as the fish was topped with many cute and colorful vegetable shapes. -Sourdough Cornmeal Bread with Sour Corn Butter: 9/10 - SO unique!! The bread itself is really perfectly baked sourdough, but the real star of this dish was the sour corn butter. It was SO sour! I really enjoyed it, especially since I had never had a butter with this flavor profile before, and pairing sour with sour felt very intentional. I'll also say that having the bread definitely helped fill us up a bit. -Bear Creek Beef, Marble Potato: 9.5/10 - The beef here is absolutely divine, cooked to a perfect rare. It is accompanied by a potato mousse, which when eaten with the meat becomes a delectable pairing, as well as rich pieces of black truffle and a few little potatoes. The mousse and beef together just sang. -Low Country Shellfish & Sour Corn Spoonbread: 7.5/10 - Sauces were tasty (especially the light brown one in the center), one bitter and one more savory, but I felt that they gave very little seafood. The spoonbread was also very nice in texture, but dull in flavor. -Frozen Cucumber and Herb Donut: 9/10 - This frozen ice cream donut tasted of basil, mint, and refreshing cucumber greenness, but NOT in a weird way. It was honestly really delicious and we surprisingly loved the sweetness with the herby, veggie flavor. -Sourwood Honey custard, Paw Paw Caramel: 10/10 - DIVINE! The sweet custard (doesn't taste too much of honey) paired with the perfectly made caramel sauce was just SO rich and delicious. Couldn't really taste the Paw Paw fruit, but didn't mind. -Black Walnut & Smoked Cocoa Fudge: 5/10 - Boring. Just fudge. Good, just not interesting. (They also gave my father an extra little bonbon with a candle because it was his birthday. The bonbon was just a normal chocolate, but it was a cute touch.)

It was a delightful gastrointestinal journey though the Appalachians during which we had the best drink we ever tasted (Fig & Sage) and a whole host to delicious bites. The service is unique and extraordinary, and the vibe is Appalachian Chic. We did the 16-course tasting, and it was fabulous from the roots to the stars!

See my review of Audrey for context: ------------------ Cut to my evening at June a few days later. I arrived, and there was no host, so I took a seat. When the host returned, he helped all the people standing at the stand, even though he clearly saw me seated. I'm pretty sure he knew who I was. No worries, though, because I wasn't that enthusiastic about this experience. I wasn't running to the table like their other guests were. You even have to walk yourself into the restaurant; they say, "Go upstairs, make a right, and then another right." I got lost. Fun! Here we go! Having tried every one of their mocktails the previous night, I knew I only wanted to drink the de-alcoholized wine from Leitz. They were ouuuttttttttttttt? Not ChiChibooobooooo, the one non-homemade kombucha concoction? The reason you meter your guests is so that you can provide them the entire experience. That's why you couldn't squeeze me in, right? You would think they were doing that to ensure they had enough for everyone who was booked that night, so why are you out of the one decent mocktail in the whole place? So fancy, yum. I remembered the night before, they showed me their version of "wine" that they had actually bottled, with this man's face on it. It was disgusting. The proxies, or whatever they call it--gross. With those being my only options, I asked if any of the cocktails could be made low-proof or zero-proof. I was hesitant because I didn't feel comfortable asking them to change anything--it is a tasting menu restaurant, after all. But the sommelier was insistent and said, "If there's anything you don't like, we'll take it off until we get it right." Okayyy, because I was quite thirsty at that point. Do you know they charged me for every one of those drinks they brought to the table, even though I only drank three to the bottom? I should've taken that discount from the night before to offset this nonsense. Ugh. The first course had caviar, so I was excited. And not just fish roe, but real Osetra caviar. I thought, "Oh, don't fret, buttercup, things are looking up." That's about where it ended. The "antelope," which was just venison, nearly reset my dental work, and the truffle thing that came with it was a whole sunflower bulb. Have you ever eaten the cob of corn as a kid? That literally tastes better than eating the base of a sunflower. Lord, help me. Now I remember from the previous night at Audrey, they brought down some tasting dishes. They brought down the chicken hand thing and the desserts, which included a bonbon. Why did they give the white couple next to me the bonbon dessert and not me? I knew it was part of the tasting menu because they had brought us some the previous night. If I wasn't done already, just as I noticed this, the world's biggest fly landed on my hand. I swear it was a cicada. Like, how??? I ran out of there. This experience cost me $418. Beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10 out of 10. Amazing service, presentations and flavor profiles. The wine pairing was a nice bonus. This is my favorite of his 3 restaurants.

Sean Brock is one of the best things to happen to Nashville since the Titans moved here. The research, care and attention to detail that is taken to create the experience at June, is like no other. The staff was great, service was engaging and the food is another level. Tasting menus are about the whole experience and this is a magnificent experience.

Wonderful experience. Professional service. Set in a stunning, minimalistic modern farmhouse design. From the initial introduction of the raw ingredients to the innovative cuisine developed at the in house food laboratory, this dinner delivered across all 16 courses.

What a delightful night at June tonight! I feel this would be between a * and ** star of an experience and yes, it is absolutely an experience. Service* - not a single time was there no attention paid to the table, all dishes when finished were removed in under 30 seconds. There was a tag team effort throughout the night without one beat missing. From entry to their booking system remembering another friend's wine selection was impressive and that's a level of service beyond Nashville. The design of the restaurant: The Kanso is real! There is nothing like this in Nashville, the clean lines, the openness, the quiet and gentle restaurant that doesn't take away from conversation. Foie Gras, Finger Limes, Hoshigaki: Delicate and crunchy with savory Lobster with Lovage & Benne: Chunky, cooked right and delicious. Even the skewers had a heftiness to it and felt like quality. Crab Omelet with Black Truffle: this has a proper Japanese tomato omelet consistency as well.  Kaluga Caviar, Hickory Nut & Nori: This was like a delicate Indian pani puri but with more intricacy and delicate flavors the last like a good finish of a bourbon. The pairing of the Brut Voirin Jumel Grand Cru Champagne worked well with all the above four well. Vidalia Onion Custard with Sassafras: Let's give you a little savory with a touch of sour custard served in an egg, Japanese style. **Michelin worthy, bringing the three pairings out at once is a very smart move The 2021 COS Inzolia Grecanico Rami - favorite of the night Cherrywood Smoked Scallop with Fennel: comes out delicate, in a lightly cooked sushi quality with the right amount of melting in your mouth. Tomato, Kintokidai, Fresh Wasabi: For the true sashimi types, get ready to be impressed by the freshness. For the veggie types, get ready to be impressed by the freshness. For everyone else, enjoy this mixture, that's right. This was also not just tiny, it felt like it had substance equivalent to three sashimi pieces. Japanese Rock Crab, Courgettes & Za'atar: Now it's time to get a little weird, first you get some of the squash taste then with a mix of the savory hits you with a hint of sour. Delectable.  Spoonbread, Uni, Lobster, Black Truffle*: now for one of the stars for the night for me. So many flavor profiles, so much working together and if you don't do it all together, each item packs a punch but when mixed. Grilled Pied Bleu with Yuba, Jimmy Nardello Peppers & Garlic Scapes*: This course was unique, I can't recall ever have Yuba and the grilled pied blue had a slight bit of that meat taste like when you simmer portabella mushrooms over butter for hours but more of a special, cleaner fresh taste. This was another star and for the vegetarian types, you would want to eat this every day. The Hirsch Chardonnay was memorable as it helped introduce and reintroduce the freshness . Somewhere around here is when the Japanese influence tones down and introduces the more comfort food factor Sean Brock is known for. I have never associated Brock with much of anything Japanese but as someone who fancies himself as a Japanese food fanatic with many visits to Japan - he paid homage and did it right. Grilled Coturnix Quail, Field Peas, Sake Lees and Crispy Quail Leg with Shiso* Wait, what? Another winner? Yep. I think from the ingredients you can get it but you know when you get to the right place, it's a little small and you wonder, will I enjoy something that size? You do when it's done right and the seasoning hits? This felt like a comfort dish. Texas Deer with Corn & Okra: Introducing a heartier dish with comfort. I have never had deer I was very fond of but the cut, prep and how it came out. I enjoyed it. The Domaine Truchetet Pinot Noir made this small meal feel like a proper red with a proper cooked meat. Right. The corn was a fun touch and didn't take away from it either. Chevre, Dill Brioche, Carrot Mustard*: Think of a nice little perfect puffed pretzel with the right salt. Nice way to move towards the sweets. Sourwood Honey Custard & Paw Paw Caramel* The star of the sweets. Everything mixed right with this dish and was fresh, almost sweet but not sweet. Lavender Milk Ice, Poppyseed, Peaches: Again, the direction isn't overly sweet but in a category that I've enjoyed at other places I call adult desserts. It's easy to make the desserts with all kind of overly sugary items but to make it savory and enjoyable without feeling you aren't finishing up takes skill. Another delectable item. The last three treats! Paired with a Rosé called Patrick Bottex Gamay Poulsard Mousseux which was a different type of dessert wine and nothing like a port or sherry. Fresher, more youthful and less serious.* Citrus Madeleine: Mmm good start. Aged Cheddar, Sake, Peanuts: Bring back a little sour. Milk Chocolate & Buckwheat Chouquette: Finish off with a good and interesting savory.

Gorgeous restaurant! A+ experience. All of the dishes were so creative and beautiful. I'm a bit of a picky eater so in my experience part of a tasting menu is that I'm not going to LOVE every single dish, but even the ones that weren't my favorite here were good! I ate everything! Perfect for a special occasion and has a very extensive wine list. The service was also top notch.

Didn't feel like I was right in the heart of bustling East Nashville - felt like a little retreat. The service was great and so patient with us as we were quite indecisive. Especially since it was a new menu and there were no pics online (then I totally forgot to take pics to help future yelpers not fall to my fate, alas!). I landed on the French Toast Bread Pudding. It was quite heavenly, but I do wish it was a bit bigger for the price... My friends both got the Avocado Toast and a few of us ordered sides of chicken sausage (and yeah, that was good and they were also a good size, plus 3 links were included in each order). We finished quite quickly but were in a deep convo about who knows what, but never felt rushed to leave (probs as it was kind of between service times, but still, appreciated). Def need to go back for Dinner and another little retreat!

Great value if you are coming with a group and can't decide what to get. I was not able to take pictures of everything as the dishes just kept coming and I lost track of everything that was brought out, but in general, the dishes were veggie-forward but not exclusively (we had some fried chicken that was very good). The menu is seasonal, so made differ when you visit, but my favorites were the squash and brussels sprouts. They were very accommodating of a gluten intolerance at our table and the staff thoroughly explained the components of every dish and reiterated throughout the dinner what was gluten-free and what wasn't. They provided substitutions when necessary. We additionally ordered the famous whipped feta. I am not even a cheese fan, but thought it was incredible. Super creamy and flavorful, it went perfectly with the pita. Definitely order this no matter what!

An internet search while traveling pointed us to Lockeland on a Friday evening and we so happened to thread the needle of being being able to get a table. We did not have reservations but luckily found a couple of seats at the bar. The bartender quickly greeting us, giving us menus and offering drink choices. The bartenders were very attentive and alot of fun to talk to. We opted for a non traditional meal choice and started with a bunch of apps and made it more of a small plate, tapas style meal. We loved everything we got from the wings to the empanadas to the warm dip. Everything came out on time and was full of flavor and the cocktails were out of this world. Not the traditional cocktails you would expect but all bursting with flavors. A must go-to restaurant.

We were able to make a reservation a couple days before for a Saturday dinner. Staff was attentive and gave good suggestions. Everything was nicely plated and I think overall the dishes were good, but I didn't personally think I needed to have anything again per say. What we ordered: + smoked bone marrow - pickled red onion & parsley salad, smoked salt, grilled FM sourdough - generous to make sure we had 4 pieces, one for each of us, bread was toasted to near burnt, and I wish there was more herbs/onions to eat with + queso fondito - PRB chorizo, pumpkin seeds, cilantro, warm tortillas, escabeche - nice cheese blend, but I think it was missing some more oomph, I think I prefer the crunchy chip than tortilla + SM grilled 12oz bone-in pork chop - TN smoked cheddar mac and cheese, braised greens, TN chow chow - Not our favorite entree but I liked the cheddar mac + beef short rib stroganoff - Nicoletto's rigatoni, roasted onion, mushroom & garlic, sour cream - my favorite dish of the night! A unique way to present a classic dish and I thought it was delicious. + Empanadas - crispy exterior and good filling, the chimichurri was more oil-tasting than additional flavor + Gem salad with fried tomatoes - I like the fried tomatoes! I think a romaine would be better than the gem lettuce as it was a little soft. We were stuffed afterwards so this amount was plenty for 4 people. Price was also reasonable!

The cooks were throwing down in that kitchen! Over a couple of days I tried a few things. SZECHUAN SALAD I got the Szechuan Salad with both kale and spinach. I added tempeh bacon and extra dressing on the side. (It didn't need the extra dressing though.) This salad is SO good! I had to force myself to put the fork down and not overeat. It's a large portion so you can share or save half for another day. (When doing this I recommend getting the dressings on the side to prevent soggy greens.) All of the ingredients tasted super fresh, and that Szechuan tofu was thoroughly marinated. Deliciousness! The tempeh (and at home avocado) that I added wasn't necessary but it sure was tasty. This salad is gluten free. SZECHUAN BRUSSELS I love me some roasted brussels sprouts so it was a must to try theirs. I added jalapeños and Hot Tempeh. I have no idea what Hot Tempeh is but I wanted to try it. Best decision ever. The dish itself is amazing. 10/10! The sprouts are saturated in the Szechuan sauce and spices, so every tender bite bursts with tantalizing flavors in your mouth. The Hot Tempeh is tempeh with a coating. It's quite delicious and it elevated an already soaring experience for me. The Szechuan Brussels dish is gluten free, but the Hot Tempeh is not (because of the breading). DUBAI CHOCOLATE CAKE Because I had to. It was NOT gluten free, but I risked it (I have a gluten sensitivity). BLUEBERRY PANCAKES I ordered a single pancake, gluten free for $1 extra. So fluffy and buttery. You'd never guess it was gluten free or vegan. ROASTED POTATOES Excellent preparation and seasonings. MOCK TUNA MELT Gluten free when ordered as a bowl. It was served on a bed of spinach instead of bread. I omitted the cheese and tomatoes. It was very good and the chipotle sauce had a great kick.
