Also, highly recommended and super tasty are the chicken with basil and ginger on rice, ground pork on rice and hard boiled egg, and the tomato shrimp on rice. I would give it a 4 just because it's local business and it's Taiwanese (satisfy my cravings for home food) but tbh it's a 3.5 probably, not the best of food and taste but it's decent. I had sooo many meals from here since I went to UMD. When I crave for rice dish or a cozy beef noodles soup, I always go to this spot. Honestly, it's not up to par as to Taiwanese restaurants in Rockville, but it's also not mediocre and it's quite good value for the price. One thing I have to give it a solid 4/4.5 is the popcorn chickens and fried snacks, it's huge in portion and taste very close to actual Taiwan flavor. It always comes out piping hot and juicy. Very satisfying. On the other hand the drinks are meh, I'd rather walk a little further for other brand's boba milk teas. It's more of a food cafe than for drinks. I would recommend for students and staffs at UMD, but I won't go there if I have to purposely drive to this place. I order the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. It was not that great. It had a strange after taste. Other, Mian beef noodle soup places are much better. Then I asked for hot chili oil and vinegar for the soup and the waiter really tried to squeeze the remaining few drops out of the container by the boba tea are instead of just going in the back to get a fresh jar, which he finally did after I said something. For $15.99, I would expect the soup to be much better. Yesterday was the second time my partner and I used Uber Eats to place an order here. Both times our food arrived within about an hour. A couple weeks ago I bought a Taiwanese cookbook so wanted to compare the taste of homemade fried chicken bites (yan su ji) with a restaurant. I used an air fryer but assumed Taiwanese restaurants would use traditional methods of oil in a wok or some sort of deep fryer. The crispy chicken as well as the fried squid from Jumbo Jumbo were pretty tasty. I also enjoyed the oriental ground pork noodles. Personally I'm not a huge fan of dry bean curd but it reminded me of my parents' home cooking and it was nice to have rice as a texture contrast with the rest of the meal. Other Taiwanese places do have fancier offerings and presentation of bubble tea but Jumbo's simple mango milk tea still tasted good. The tapioca pearls were pleasantly 'Q' (having the Taiwanese prized 'Al Dente' texture). Will continue to order from them when I'm craving authentic Taiwanese street food! read more

We came here unexpectedly on a Sunday evening at 8 pm on 10/25/20. We were surprised it was still open since most places close early on Sundays. Carryout is only available currently due to the pandemic. We ordered the Taiwanese chicken platter with ground pork rice and vegetables (cabbage and carrots) for $10.85. It was very large that it could actually feed 2 people unless you're starving. The chicken looked burnt, but was juicy inside. If you're not a regular customer, the menu is a little confusing because Taiwanese chicken could be ordered alone as an appetizer for $8.30 or as a platter for $10.85. Wait time for an in-person order was 15 minutes. The prices seem to be high if you are a college student. But an occasional visit would be best if you're on a budget. read more

I used to go to the Jumbo Jumbo in Rockville many times growing up. So you can imagine how excited I was to have it open up when I was in college at UMD. As far as traditional Taiwanese food goes, this is average. But I still like their fried popcorn chicken and beef noodle soup. I would say their bubble tea offerings is where they struggle. Though it may be a nostalgic thing, but I do like their green milk tea with boba. My friends beg to differ. They also a "special" (at least pre-Covid) where you could get a full entree with a bubble tea for less than $10. The times I ordered the special, it was Japanese curry with a bubble tea of my choice. Curry was a good size, took me two meals to finish and tasted great. There is pretty limited seating inside. There are a few tables right outside, but it is located on the edge of campus so you could always just eat somewhere else on campus. They do have a card minimum otherwise they will charge you a fee. Pretty annoying to see in this day and age. But Asian restaurants sometimes be like that. read more

I can never make it in time to take pictures before devouring my meal here! (One day I'll make it!) there are a number of fantastic items here, and a couple that could use improvement from my perspective. However, that doesn't keep me from ordering here weekly to every other week! I've been dining here since college, and still have yet to find Taiwanese chicken as good. It is dark meat so it is tender, flavorful, and stays crispy. It even reheats to a crisp perfection if you refrigerate it to keep leftovers. The seasoning is addictive and can go on nearly anything. However, the combo with ground pork and rice is a decent deal money wise, but doesn't taste great. The ground pork doesn't seem seasoned whatsoever. Honestly, I really just wanted the rice anyway. The spiced salt tofu and seasoned fries are also spectacular. With delivery, they can become soft. But usually when you order for pickup they try to package it so it doesn't get soft or soggy. The spicy pork lo mein had much more savory/saltiness flavor years ago. I still order it, but so add salt myself for the balance. It's very spicy and can be overwhelming, so the salt used to offer a good balance where you can still taste the other flavors. The pork itself seems to have become lower quality over the years (maybe it's just me). However, I still love this dish enough to sprinkle my own salt or pick out the pork if necessary. The bubble tea is great, nothing special. However, it's super convenient for students and the community on campus. It's also a perfect add with the food. Even with some of my picky notes about missing salt and iffy flavored pork (other than the chicken) I remain obsessed with the food. Highly recommend!!! read more

Finally stopped by this place, I had the Taiwanese Lo Mei and forgot to ask for shrimp instead of beef. Not sure if that is even possible. I enjoy the portion of this plate, but as you can see I did not eat the beef. We also order the Fried Combo as appetizer and it's sprinkled w/old bay and Cajun I believe. I really like the Taro Milk Tea, i had the jumbo size. This was such a nice treat post eric nam night at the Filmore. I will recommend stopping by the ice cream shop next door after as a treat This is the menu and right now the restroom is out of service so the restroom has turned to a single restroom. I have been coming here for many years now and i've never had a bad experience! Truly the best place in the DMV to get Taiwanese comfort/fast food! Whenever I come here I always order popcorn chicken. It is so delicious and they give you a good sized portion. Beef noodle soup is a huge comfort food for me and they make it so well. Everything tastes so good here, I live in Virginia and I drive over a hour to come here each time but it's always worth it. The taro flavor reminded me of red velvet cake - a unique and enjoyable twist. The almond milk tea had hints of chai and a richer brown sugar taste. It tastes best with the classic tapioca pearls which are chewy with mild taste which is sometimes more brown sugary tasting but it's kind of flavorless in a way. What sets this place apart is their flexibility - I requested the removal of jelly from my drink, and they were more than happy to accommodate. Visiting close to closing time, around 8 PM, you'll find college kids chatting and munching away. Keep in mind, though, tapioca pearls might run out at that point. A small size drink was around $3, cheaper than some competitors. The fried chicken was $6.25 and with rice, could be its own meal. OTHER TIPS: The menu displayed doesn't show the prices. The dumplings were mediocre, but the chicken/rice/pork was absolutely disgusting. The food had a foul odor and taste, which is the primary reason for this bad review. The chicken was also not just "crispy," but was fried within an inch of its life and looked almost entirely like breadcrumbs. The chicken also didn't even taste like chicken; instead, it tasted like breadcrumbs and oil. The rice and pork, which had shaved carrots and cabbage on top, weren't even edible. I took maybe a few bites before I just couldn't take it anymore. The food was also expensive, which wouldn't have been too much of an issue if it had been good. I will never come back. Under qualified food and terrible service!!! I have been going to Jumbo jumbo since last August and today will be my LAST day coming to this store. I AM VERY DISSAPOINTED!! I came to get the kumquat boba tea and at first attempt, the owner lady gave me a drink that looked liked someone had made a mistake because the ice in the drink was completely melted and it wasn't even cold. I told her about the drink and she gave me a rude look and then started banging stuff around in the kitchen while making my new drink, as if she wanted to make a point or something. I come to get food at Jumbo jumbo at least twice a week and have recommended them to a lot of my friends. Sometimes the food is not good in terms of quality, but I just let it go and won't order the same dishes again and have never made any complaints. I tip every time, even when doing takeout. I don't understand why I got treated as if I was the problem and begging her. Taiwanese people are generally known for their consideration and kindness. That's why I love the people, culture, and food, but this lady thinks she is above her customers to treat them like this. Maybe today this business only lost one customer. With this kind of attitude from the owner, I wouldn't be surprised if they lose more customers. I hope no one has to endure this kind of service! read more

Visited here very frequently during my master's program in UMD. As a Taiwanese, I can tell they are serving real Taiwanese foods. Comparing to what I used to have in Taiwan, the quality of the food is quite average - not a restaurant you would plan to try, but an everyday restaurant that you would walk in when you are hungry. But this is good enough for them to be one of the most popular restaurants service Taiwanese dishes in this area. Plus their food is not expensive, so students from UMD will always have a chance to try. For people who never been here before, I would retro try fried chicken with bubble milk tea.
