Chicken dish over chive mashed potatoes

Cozy, seasonal, and full of heart--dinner at Julia's Local was Catskills magic. Snack stand, country pâté, trout, and roast chicken all hit the mark. And Julia herself? Warm, welcoming, and the soul of the place.

Everything I had here was outstanding from the perfect old-fashioned, the country pate pickle plate, and the short rib bourguignon. Incredible place and I liked the look of the bar. I thought it was mildly adorable that when I called to ask about reservations, Julia answered. ;) If I lived in the area, I would be here all the time.

This is one of my mother's favorite restaurants, and it's well on the way to becoming one of mine as well. Julia's Local took over from the German bakery that used to inhabit this unique space, and this slightly Scandinavian and fully delicious eatery is focused on using fresh and local ingredients to bring seasonal cuisine to the area. They have a serious garden nearby, and much of what you're eating starts there, such as the Simple Salad (a beautiful mix of greens with pumpkin seeds and a preserved lemon vinaigrette) and the Snack Stand (garden goodies, griddled naan and more). While the environment is a little rustic and informal (there's a washer/dryer in the bathroom, a testament to the one-of-a-kind space), everything is surprisingly elegant. The place settings are gorgeous, with beautiful flatware and handmade plates, our table in the window had adorable cushions everywhere, and there's a front deck for outdoor seating. From the moment you arrive, you feel as though you're being welcomed into someone's well-appointed home. Julia is more than likely going to be the first person you meet, and she and her front of house staff are quite accommodating. The service is excellent overall, which is particularly nice to see in a non-tipping establishment. Although the winelist is wonderful, I like to start with a shot of aquavit (as the menu suggested), and recently I moved on to the very well-crafted cocktails during dinner (the Hemingway Daiquiri is perfect). The menu changes often, but you can always count on a number of crowd-pleasers and several ways to eat local trout (seared, sashimi, tartare, etc.). We like to share everything, and last night we split the simple salad, the chicken liver pâté, the roast chicken, the shortrib bourguignon, and the housemade tagliatelle with tempura summer squash. We added the bread and butter as well, because everyone likes bread and butter. Truly, everything that comes out of Chef Henning's kitchen is tasty, and carefully cooked. The roast chicken was perfectly juicy, the skin crisp, and the farro salad accompanying it was one of my favorite bites. The shortrib was stunning in its fall off the bone presentation and rich and lovely in flavor...but my daughters ate most of it so I didn't get to eat as much as I'd like. The simple salad was just that, and the pâté was excellent (my wife's favorite for sure). The only off note was that the tagliatelle was a tad underseasoned, but I like that they brought out maldon salt to rectify it, and it was perfect after that. If there is a drawback to Julia's Local, I think it's not good for all children. It's a bit too fancy, and the menu is not accessible for tiny palates. Like I said, our kids enjoyed the shortrib once they tried it, but our youngest was a bit miffed that they didn't have ketchup to pair with her roast chicken, and neither of them loved the dill whipped into the butter even if I did. (There are no french fries either, a travesty according to my three year old.) Don't get me wrong: the staff was extremely welcoming to our little ones, but I think I would probably have been happier if I left them at home for this one. Overall, Julia's Local seems to be very intentional about everything they do. The sourcing of their ingredients, the cultivation of their garden, the decor choices, place settings, and menus...I love how thoughtful everything seems, and I appreciate the choices they've made, the hospitality they provide, and the food they serve. We'll be back, but maybe without the kids.

WHAT A SHIT SHOW!…read moreThe lobby entrance smells like an Abercrombie & Fitch store had a baby with an AXE spray commercial which was pretty nauseating. I was staying nearby and decided to check this place out because we needed to find food for a bunch of hungry kids at 1:40pm. We came as a group of 8 and saw there were available seats so we decided to eat here. Waited by the server stand and didn't get seated for 10 minutes even though there was a big table open. Whatever. Finally got seated and it took the waitress 15 min to come over and take our order. We never saw her again until an hour+ later when our food finally came out. She never even bothered to bring water to our table?! FYI: we ended up eating past 3pm. Ok, maybe they're understaffed and they're super busy? There were a total of 6 tables seated with people and 2 waitresses. Maybe that's a lot in upstate NY standard? The food was good, I'll give the cook that. But maybe the kitchen needs help so it doesn't take over an hour to bring out some eggs or avocado toast? Honestly, the food was a solid 4 star but the horrendous service was a negative so rounding this to a 2 star.

Damon Baehrel, which is named after the chef himself, is probably considered the most exclusive restaurant in the world. It is literally a one-man show, as Chef Baehrel is the one who cooks, serves, and hosts a 5-6+ hour-dining experience for his guests at his beautiful home on his 12-acre property in upstate NY. As most know, this restaurant is booked solid until the year 2026, and they have not been taking any reservations/adding parties onto their waiting list since last year/'14 (this is for an indefinite period of time) - you bet your tootin' bootin' that I felt so victorious for bypassing others on the list by 11+ years!!! (Just note that it really doesn't matter 'who' you are, 'who' you know, and/or if you come equipped with a list of multiple referrals.) Known for his 'Native Harvest Cuisine,' every single item on his menu (besides the seafood that is brought fresh from Nova Scotia from his private supplier) is made/created/raised on the premise - when I mean every item, I mean EVERY item, from the flours, pressed oils, vinegars, breads, to the curing his own meats and aging his own cheeses! This restaurant is the epitome and the prime definition of what 'farm-to-table' should really be! We were welcomed warmly from Chef Baehrel, and I was super excited that we were his only guests for the evening - YES, IT WAS JUST THE 3 OF US, THE HUBS, ME, AND THE CHEF!!! (I think I literally sobbed right on the spot). Our super private dining experience was about 5.5+ hours, but actually flew right on by and was like a total dream - we were given a multi-course menu (about 24-26+ items, including some handful of extras since the Chef was just super excited in having us(!!!)), that featured seasonal, organic plants/fruits/vegetables/trees from his property, in addition to a lovely educational overview of each of the ingredients used for the dish. I just couldn't believe at some of the ingredients that he had used, and how each of them had a distinct flavor (and were all actually edible/okay for human consumption!) - it was amazing to listen to the experimentation, the time spent, the punctuality of harvesting such items throughout the year, and the multiple aging/preserving/curing process that he does. I had a lovely wine pairing with the multi-course dinner (delicious champagne, reds, whites, and dessert wines), while the hubs had homemade juice pairings made from the luscious fruits/tree saps (super delicious and refreshing!). The love, the passion, and the excitement from the chef was just purely an eye-opener, and this literally was the BEST DINING EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!!! BELIEVE THE HYPE (of the very few limited ones there are) - Chef Baehrel will change your life and exceed any and all expectations that you may/will have!!! You have to go there to experience it personally, as there are no words to describe such a unique experience - the overwhelming appreciation that you obtain in tasting the raw essence of the ingredients that are found around you was truly truly truly remarkable - Chef Baehrel is a GENIUS! Just note that there is no photography/video/recording equipment/note-taking allowed inside the restaurant, so PLEASE be respectful to the Chef (and, shame on those 'bloggers' who disregard/circumvent around this request/policy!). I cannot wait to go back! :D +BEST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER!!! +Chef Damon Baehrel :D +Native Harvest Cuisine :D +5.5+ dining experience :D +no photography/video/recording equipment allowed inside the restaurant - please be respectful!

I put in my…read morereservation request in August 2012 and fully expected a 5-year minimum wait but to my delight I was able to snag a "special seating" on a Sunday at 4pm. It helps to be flexible with your dates and within driving distance. 20 courses (!), 4.5 hours. 5 hour round trip drive. 1 car rental. Completely worth it. Damon Baehrel is the ultimate host, completely charming and engaging. My wife and I were the only guests and it was awesome! Not awkward at all. What I loved about the meal, besides his "Native Harvest" dishes, was that by the end of it you can start to understand his botany heavy food lexicon, as certain themes started to emerge. Stevia and clover as thickening agents, all sap everything, powders galore, nut flours, fermentation trickery, homemade cheese. Homemade everything! (except some salt and the seafood/wine). Hearing his insanely detailed and clever course preparations makes you feel guilty about eating all of these small bites in less than 30 seconds. Damon paces the meal perfectly, always happy to chat and answer your questions at length. He takes great satisfaction in his cooking and sharing his techniques. This meal is about learning the process as much as it is about eating, and both are better for it. There were some items that sounded cooler than they tasted, but overall each dish was solid. The highlights for me were the teal duck and the duck egg "creme brulee". I guess I like duck. If you are fortunate enough to get a reservation here come with an open mind and don't expect a rich fancy-pants food experience or you will be disappointed. PS - Leaving a one-star review for a restaurant you have never eaten at just because you can't get a reservation is pathetic.

We were seated immediately in a very cozy booth, and the server was friendly and helpful. We had the fondue, of course, with apples and veggies added on. The one thing I wasn't wild about was that they charged for each drink refill, but the server was attentive and the fondue was so good that I can definitely forgive that.

But several awkward minutes passed and another party came inside before anyone greeted and escorted us to a table. Oddly, a runner walked by the entrance a few times but didn't acknowledge us and seemed to avoid eye contact. Prices were were a hair higher than expected, but thankfully the portions were filling. I went with the tavern steak sandwich ($22). The fries were the steak kind but not too fat and wedge-y. There was a totally reasonable amount of Muenster and steak, and I found that the sandwich didn't really need the accompanying steak sauce. The mac & cheese ($14) was a delightful appetizer made with a whopping five different cheeses! Last Chance mentions both antiques and cheese in its name so we had to investigate both. Instead of a separate shop, the antiques are all around the restaurant, and our server said some are for sale and some belong to the owner's private collection but he seems possibly open to offers. The cheese and gifts are in an area on the other side of the bar, with the cheese behind a counter. I thought the cheese collection would be larger and have more NY options, but it was still a solid selection. If you plan on purchasing any candy or other treats after your meal, just let your server know so you can take your bill over there.

This past weekend was my first visit here strictly for dinner (of course I had a few adult cocktails as well). With our 8 year old son in tow, we stopped in on a Thursday night around 6pm. There is a family friendly dining area as you come in the door and we were greeted and seated right away. Waitress grabbed our drink order as our son was given crayons and a kids menu. A few other families were there with their kids and numerous crayon drawings adorning the walls reassured us that this was a family restaurant. Nice menu with good variety of pub grub. It was wing night so "When in Rome". There was an all you can eat offering but neither of us had that kind of appetite so we opted for an order of boneless wings each. I got the Nashville hot and she got the Hot Buffalo. The portions were large and the sauces were great. The Nashville is a bit on the tamer side of hot and the hot buffalo was both hot and tasty. Definitely get the wings. We also got an order of the Rooster Balls. For the record, these are not actually the balls of a rooster. Chunks of white chicken wrapped in bacon and cheese and fried served with a remoulade side sauce. I'm drooling as I type that. Our son got the adult version of the chicken tenders with fries on the side. He seemed to enjoy the tenders but the fries were the star of the night. We basically cleaned his plate for him as they were cut and cooked perfectly. To summarize, great for drinks and great for a family night out. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and delicious grub.
