Best haircut I've received in recent memory and I'll tell you why. 1. Kieu is very active in working with you to get the hair cut and style you want. She also adds her own input and is very knowledgeable about what and where needs to be cut. I'll add that the style I like is a bit uncommon for Asians (think Mad Men-ish but less slicked) so I was delightfully surprised at how well Kieu handled my often hard to cut hair. 2. Very nice and inviting interior. Outside can be quite unassuming but don't let it fool you. The place is very nice, with high ceilings, modern furniture and decor. This is a place I dig. 3. Incredibly affordable. August 2013 - I paid only $18 for a men's haircut + style. This is almost half of what I paid elsewhere. I almost felt guilty paying so little and only tipping $5. The great benefit of this price is that it really allows for more frequent visits so you can consistently keep that hairstyle, shape and length you want. An update to my former review which was from May 2012. This is still my go-to place for men's hair cuts. Friendly service and an excellent cut. The landlord turned the lot into pay parking so arrive a little early to snag some free street parking. The prices went up a little, but for what you get, it is still reasonable and a good value. Men's cuts range from $15 for a buzz to $35 for the Signature, which includes relaxing shampoo, scalp & neck massage, face & neck hot towels wrap, and style. As a college student who needed a solid haircut, I was pleasantly surprised at the friendly service and affordability at J's Salon. I was hesitant to try the hair salons on the Ave after reading some reviews on them so I decided to bus down J's Salon to give them a try after reading the many positive reviews on Yelp. I arrived a half hour earlier than my appointment time and Kieu was finishing up with another customer. I really liked the decor of the interior! It felt really nice just to sit on the couch as I read magazines to bide my time. As soon as the other customer left, Kieu focused all her attention on me. I was really amazed at her friendliness! They must have undergone an owner change because the last time I went in there were two stylists that I had never seen before there and when I mentioned that I wanted a "premium cut" that they advertise on their website, they had no idea what I was talking about. The previous stylists always knew what I meant when I asked for a men's premium cut. The initial confusion was frustrating. That said though, I still got a very good haircut that I was satisfied with. The shampoo and scalp massage, though, were not as well done, so taking a star down for that too. Prices also seem to have gone up just a little bit. I heard them charge the guy before me $20 for a standard haircut, when it used to be $18. My premium cut was $25 instead of the usual $24, but a dollar or two isn't that big of a deal for me. read more

I came by on a Saturday afternoon and the place was empty. Great for me since I could get my haircut immediately. I told the owner that I wanted scissors and a point cut instead of the typical Asian clippers and bowl cut. This also meant my hair wouldn't be cut too short like other Asian salons. My haircut came out great. I got the shampoo too all at a very reasonable price. By the time I left, 2 people had come in, so word is getting out. I'll definitely be returning! read more

I went there with the Tippr coupon for partial highlights and was very satisfied with the results. Kieu ("Q"), the owner, was very proficient at handling my coarse and dry Asian hair and she made the highlights look warm and natural which is exactly what I wanted. The scalp massage and styling blow out were nice bonuses as well. The atmosphere is very relaxed and comfortable. There's even a nice view of the lake. Me and my husband went for haircuts here were not disappointed. Both stylists (Nancy and Kieu (?)) were very efficient and did and excellent job. We both were done and on our way back in 30 mins straight ! The prices are reasonable and they don't push pricey products on you, but are happy to recommend some if you ask them to. I stopped by here on my way home from work after reading all the positive reviews and I am sure glad I did! I actually created an account on Yelp just so I can leave this review! I have pretty short hair so it is fairly easy to cut but what has made this my new go-to spot is not only was my hair cut great but Kieu's shampoo massage is wonderful! When most places advertise a massage it is usually just feels like a gimmick to make a couple extra bucks. Kieu's massage went above and beyond and it felt absolutely amazing! J's Salon may give good haircuts but this is just another example of what is posted on their website as far as cost and what actually is the cost for their services. I consider it very deceptive. Their website says a man's haircut is $24 with shampoo and $18 without. I went to the Salon and was told that a haircut was $25 with shampoo and THE SAME, $25 WITHOUT SHAMPOO. My choice but the price was the same. Not happy with that false advertising. read more

Very nice salon and very nice owner. I got my hair hair died, highlighted, toned, cut and styled and my eye brows waxed/shaped all for under $150! There was hair product and antique jewelry for sale for awesome prices as well.The only downside was that it took 4 hours to get everything done and I was there past business hours. The price for a regular men's haircut is very appropriate here at J's Salon. I set up my first-time appointment over the phone with ease. Service-wise, I was very pleased with the haircut I received from Kieu, the salon owner. She was quite meticulous, always going back to make sure there were no inconsistencies (and trimming away any that were present). A nice, relaxed environment. Nothing felt rushed. This place is a disaster! There is no mistaking why it is primarily empty! I went for a cut and color and my hairstylist bleached my hair yellow and red! It took 2 more times of coloring my hair for me to stop crying inside when I looked in the mirror. Now I am left with barely tolerable color and was still charged full price for the experience.... We moved back to Seattle last summer. Since then I've been looking for a great place to get my haircut - somewhere that is comfortable, where the stylist is a true professional, and where the services are provided with both warmth and efficiency. J's Salon is exactly this place! Kieu - the owner and stylist - is wonderful and provides not only a haircut ($15) but also a signature service ($30), which I definitely recommend! The salon is open 7 days a week and getting an appointment was very easy - even on a busy Saturday. So glad that I found J's Salon and I can't wait to go back for my next haircut. J's Salon is excellent! I got my hair trimmed and my eyebrows waxed and the quality of both were well beyond any other that I've gotten in Seattle. The hairdresser is very friendly but not overbearing. She was very detail-oriented and gave me a great haircut for $40 (I am a woman with long hair). I will definitely be back for my next cut/wax. I recently went to J's salon and received the best hair-cut I have ever had! This is the second time I have been there, the first time was great, just a standard trim but my most recent time I got a bob cut (I had really long hair) and a foil. GREAT prices!! I have been getting my hair foiled for over 10 years and this is one of the best foils and the price was PERFECT! I could not be happier with my experience at J's salon--I use to spend over $250 on getting my hair done and I saved more than HALF of that at J's salon. I can honestly say this will be my new hair salon to go to! (no doubt!) Kieu is amazing! Super friendly and a great hairstylist. And so is the gentleman that cut my hair for my first time there I believe his name is Tim. I was super nervous to get such a drastic change in my hair cut and Kieu made me feel relaxed and at ease with such a big change. I'm SOOO happy with it! I came to J's Salon on Monday, February 2nd, 2015 at 10:45 am. When I arrived in the parking lot I saw a woman coming out the front door of J's and she went into the nails and spa salon next door. It made me think it was a sister business. I then went to the front door of Js and saw it was locked and dark. The place was closed, even though it was supposed to be open at 10:00 am, so I went next door to the nail salon and asked if J's was open and that same lady wasn't sure what to say. I am sitting in my car in their parking lot writing this review. This looks like a small unprofessionally run family business that doesn't keep the hours they advertise. They advertise that they open at 10:00 am... I lost any confidence that this is place is worth any chance despite the good reviews and not deserving of my money. read more

I made an appointment here because it had such good ratings on Yelp. There were so many things that happened during my haircut to make me give this bad of a rating: 1. I made an appointment for noon on a Friday, so I could get my haircut during my lunch hour at work and then get back to work by 1. Jen was the only person working the salon, and she had just started doing someone else's hair when I walked in about 10 minutes before my appointment. At 12:25, Jen finally took me back to cut my hair. I understand that things happen and waiting a few minutes is ok, but 25 minutes is not ok. 2. Jen sat me down and asked how I wanted my hair done. Once I showed her, she takes a SPRAY BOTTLE with water to wet JUST the ends of my hair. I'm no hairstylist, but I know that this will not give you an even cut. I actually stopped her as she went to pick up the scissors and said "don't you wash hair here"? And then she proceeded to wash my hair. What's funny is their pricing brochure in the salon says a shampoo/ wash is included with a women's haircut? 3. After she washed my hair, Jen left it parted in the middle. When I walked in there it was parted to the side, and any hairstylist should pay attention to that, or at least check that the part is in the proper spot. Once she moved it over to the side, she didn't part my hair all the way along my head, only halfway. She went to start cutting and I had to stop her and have her fix it. 4. At this point it was almost 12:50. I told her I had to be back at work, and I was a little disappointed that it took so long to start my haircut because I could tell she was rushing it. Then walk-in's start coming and the phone was ringing off the hook. She was the only person in the salon and kept running back and forth between me and the front, right in the middle of her cutting my hair. 5. When you cut someone's hair, you should be friendly and try to make small talk. Jen did not say a single word to me the entire haircut. Yet she was talking up a storm with the person who was there right before me. She was downright rude and unprofessional. I feel like my hair was barely cut. I will never come back here, or recommend it to anyone, no matter how much cheaper it may be than other salons in Seattle. read more

I went in for a trim and she hacked my hair a month before my wedding. My hair was covering my eyes while she was cutting it so I couldn't see what was going on. I had to go to another salon to fix the damage, which resulted in about 6-7 inches being removed. If I want to wear my hair down like I was planning, I now need extensions. This is going to be one expensive trim! Very disappointed. read more

I came in to J's to get a haircut and some highlights: I hate to give bad reviews, but here is why... 1. I came in with a coupon (I had paid $30 for partial highlights- $60 value). Upon the point of sale, the lady charged me $30 when she saw the coupon (which I had already paid for through Tippr). This was to cover the highlights. I didn't notice until I left that she accidently charged me for the coupon, $30. I called them when I got home and I said "it was no big deal, that they could just give me a $30 credit for next time," which I thought was generous, indicating that I would come back. They didn't call me back- so I had to call them again the next day. During that time, they had decided that because the length of my hair they would only give me back $15. WEIRD because they never said that when I initially paid! My (inch below shoulder length hair) was covered by the coupon the day before!! OH and now I have to go back in to pick up my money. WTF? What happened to customer service? YOU were the one that messed up! As for the hair service: 2. The lady could not comprehend the subtle highlights I requested. I explained, and explained AND brought a picture, but she just DIDN'T GET IT. She clearly was on auto-pilot. I actually color people's hair myself, so I just held her hand through the whole color process. Which thank goodness I did, because she would have left the foils on my hair waaaay too long. I was disappointed by how many she put in my hair. She obviously didn't understand the meaning of subtle. 3. Once the color was all washed out, she began to rip through my tangley hair with a bush. "wow, you have tangley hair" she said. So I gave her some tips on how to brush it ( I was used to walking her though each and every step of the service anyway). I asked if she had any detangler or leave on conditioner. "NO" she said. Seriously?? What hair salon doesn't have hair detangler? So I just had to sit there and endure my hair being ripped out. After it was all said and done. I was very polite and still gave her a $20 tip. I thought that it was a fine service for the discounted rate (although I soon realized that I ended up paying full price!) Needless to say, I will not be back.
