My previous stylist retired, and I stumbled across Matthew Steele while searching for someone new. It wasn't close by, but I get my hair cut only 4 times a year, so I didn't mind going a bit out of the way. Plus, Tangletown is a cute area and this gave me an excuse to venture into a different area of Seattle. I didn't know anyone else who'd come here, or anything about the stylists - so I just took a leap and scheduled with Paul. I am so happy I did! Paul and I visited a bit so that he could get a feel for what I wanted and what I was comfortable with. He's an experienced stylist, and he had great ideas about what kind of cut would work best for my hair type (fine hair but lots of it, and a bit of wave here and there) as well as my lifestyle (low maintenance). Paul began with a light massage using some delicious smelling essential oils, with another scalp massage while washing my hair. While the conditioning mask sat on my hair, he gave me a hand massage. It was so relaxing, I nearly dozed off. Filling my cut, he dried and styled my hair so that I looked finished coming out of the salon. And my cut was fantastic. As a bonus, Paul is lovely. The salon itself is cozy and inviting. They have some boutique items, like sweaters and jackets, that they sell as well as an array of Aveda products. The whole place smells amazing. And the staff are also very sweet and helpful. A lot of salons are closed on Sundays and Mondays, but this salon is open (another reason I wound up coming here, as those are my "days off"). The new location in Tangletown has a very calming atmosphere, and the complimentary neck / shoulder / scalp massage + hand massage was an unexpected treat :) Mary gave me an awesome haircut and asked me a lot of questions about what I was looking for, how I usually style my hair, and how I wanted it styled at the end of the appointment. She did some dry cutting at the end until it was just right! Lots of expensive salons in Seattle, but I would say this was worth the money. read more

Thank all that is holy the world re-opened so I could get back into Alexa's lovin' arms. I've had some unholy hair tragedies because my mousey natural color loves to go red when lightened, and before I went to Alexa an appreciable chunk of it got chemically singed off, giving me bangs in places no one should have them. Ever since then, Alexa's worked with the grow-out, weaving in varying mixes of brown and blonde with supreme control of the tones to keep out the brassy. But that's just her technical acumen, which while astonishing doesn't really scratch the surface, because you go to Alexa for soul food. A hug from Alexa is tonic, but even without it, she somehow weaves together the gentle humorous wisdom of a rabbi / spiritual leader and the gently inquisitive listening skills of a seasoned therapist. I'm sure she's tired at the end of the day because this woman is basically a shaman. My son is stupefied by the cost of my hair services, and they're up there. But I've never had to undo any damage. I've never had to pay three-fold to fix mistakes at home or in another salon. I've never gone away looking like a cautionary tale (at least, not because of my hair) -- and I always feel like I've left the home of a beloved friend. Paul saved me! At a separate salon earlier this week, I got a botched haircut. I asked for a lob and I got a choppy cut that looked like someone put a bowl completely over my head and snipped. I had been to this hairdresser a couple times, and she never seems to understand what I'm looking for (but also doesn't take the time to make sure we're on the same page), so I decided now was the time to try someone new. Paul had an opening at Matthew Steele Salon yesterday, and I needed desperately someone to fix my hair, so I tried him out! He took time to understand what I wanted and what I didn't like about my haircut. He asked questions and told me many times to be open and honest about how he's doing. It was a breath of fresh air, as I'm often hustled out of my chair at the other place! He made my haircut look much better, and more importantly, like the haircut I actually wanted. DO NOT GO HERE!!! Absolutely unacceptable, unprofessional, rude staff. My sister, flying in from South Carolina for her college graduation scheduled her appointment ONE MONTH in advance, they made her reschedule twice in that time and then ON THE DAY OF, literally 20 minutes before the appointment they sent a text saying the person just wouldn't be at the salon. My sister was just about in tears, she was only here for a day, she took off work, she had no hair products because she had scheduled this hair appointment and then this happens. The staff were rude and completely unhelpful they in no way seemed apologetic or tried to rectify the situation. In asking if they could cancel another appointment, like they just did my sister, to get her in as she needed to be at her graduation in a matter of hours, they were dismissive and simply said they couldn't move around other people, AS IF THEY DIDNT JUST DO THAT TO HER ON A WHIM! don't waste your money or your time. Completely unreliable service, I would take your business elsewhere or beware because they may just up and cancel you on your special day and leave you out to dry. read more

Being blonde is hard. You have to constantly be going in to get your roots done and it's very easy to screw up and end up brassy. Also, my control-freak nature does not help. So finding and trusting a new hair stylist is hard. I found a groupon for this salon and thought they had good reviews and decided to take a leap of faith. Boy, am I happy that I did! Mary did an amazing job with my hair. I can't critique a single thing that she did because she did everything amazing. Erica was awesome correcting my COVID cut (I did myself) and working with my curly hair. My curls come out best when cut just right and she knew just how to do it. I told her about the shape of my face (since I was wearing a mask) and she knew exactly what to do and how to do it. She obviously knew her stuff, and that put me at ease since this is the first time she's cut my hair. This is the happiest I've ever been with a hair cut. These guys are a bit on the pricey side, but I will be back. It's tough to get a really good cut. I originally choose this place because it works with non-toxic hair supplies, so I won't have to breathe in that stuff while I'm having my hair cut. I'm glad I came. Very happy. read more

Worst experience ever. Rather go to sport clips. I show up early for your convenience and get treated like garbage. Double prices for a horrible haircut and no shave. Thank goodness I'm only going to sport clips. That's where your barbers should be. Unexpectedly horrible would have expected better. She's somehow mastered the perfect brown base with blonde highlights. She's personable and takes the time to listen and explain and make adjustments when needed. Recently got a haircut, Aveda botanical treatment and style from this salon. The customer service was excellent. I got a layered haircut and style which I really liked and the hairstylist explained each step of the botanical treatment process. She also took the time to show me products that would match my hair type and routine. I took one star off because it was really difficult to get a hold of them on the phone. I called 3-4 times during business hours and also left a message to no avail. Finally got a hold of someone on my 5th try. I was gifted a Groupon for a haircut + hair treatment and I loved the entire experience except my haircut. The hair stylist spoke to me extensively about my hair, how I style, my no-go's/go's blah blah.. I was given a brief neck and hand massage, which was part of the package. I showed the stylist a picture if the kind of style I wanted for my long hair. I had almost waist long hair and I told the stylist that I love my hair length and only want to remove the split ends to keep it healthy. I was alright when she wanted to add some creativity in styling my hair including adding a long side fringe. I left with hair falling just below my shoulders and did not understand what happened. 3 days later I shampooed my hair and my hair looks ordinary, doesn'to seem to have much style and I have a short fringe on both sides of my parting. I have been to MS Aveda before for a haircut and wasn't disappointed. This time my experience was a disaster and all before our NYE party. read more

I had a facial done here last Friday and my skin is still glowing. Joanne did an amazing job and I really haven't been this happy about my skin in some time. I got there a bit early but was able to be seen right away. I was greeted by a friendly receptionist and offered a beverage when I got there. At $110 for an hour facial it is a bit pricey, but I am really glad that I opted for the 1 hour because it really was amazing and I didn't feel like I was rushed at all. The reason I decided to try Matthew Steele was because my boyfriend got me a gift card. I will say though that he bought the gift card online and it was supposed to emailed to me on a specific day but I never received the email. However, with a phone call to the salon they were able to get the gift card applied to my account automatically and I had no issues using it to pay. read more
