I had a wonderful experience with Jacque. She is talented, easy to talk to, and very knowledgeable. She also shows a great deal of integrity in her work -- she took the time to make sure my hair came out exactly how I wanted it to look, even though I wasn't even sure what I wanted at first. Since reopening, the salon has taken a number of safety precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and I was impressed by their efforts to keep the space clean and safe for everyone. Not gonna lie: I do a lot of things out of plain old boredom. That, combined with the fact I realized I haven't gotten my hair cut in 3 or 4 years [yikes!] pushed me to search Yelp for someplace reasonably priced within walking distance of the UW. Up comes hair[dot]comb, and at a 5 star average rating with a 2 $ price? Consider the selection made. I had no problem walking in for an impromptu haircut, and once I was on the chair I mentioned how I've been thinking about coloring my hair... instantaneously my appointment became a coloring appointment, too! I'm an easy sell, it's true! Long story made short... I am awkward. I felt totally comfortable around the ladies running h.c, they had great music playing and not a snooty vibe. There was totally a 'distinguished lady' [I'd guess her at 50] sitting next to me getting her hair done -- truly a place that anyone could feel welcome in, which is super important to me. As for the hair cut? Cut and color for $90 total pre-tip, and I love it. I almost look like a little Misty M. clone -- Allie S., now with more faux ginger! And I chopped off enough to go to Wigs for Kids; so the fact I'm lovin' my haircut rather than lamenting the loss of my long hair is of particular importance. It was my first time coming here and I was really happy with my cut and dye. I had Jeffrey, who is relatively new to hair.comb (but not to hair styling), and who I highly recommend! I came in for a trim and some sort of natural hair coloring job. Jeffrey recommended a natural bayalage and actually, I was more pleasantly surprised by the trim than anything else! He gave me such beautiful layers, making them naturally curl in a really nice way. As for the bayalage, it was natural looking and very subtle, which is what I wanted to give my hair more of a look of "texture". I also got a peekaboo patch of maroon/pink/purple color in my hair to get some uniqueness in. All turned out how I wanted so I'm super happy! Overall, would highly recommend seeing Jeffrey for a hair cut, especially if you have long, thin hair like me!! As for the actual salon: I would say prices were also pretty affordable. The place is pretty quaint but accessible. I called ahead for a reservation. The only thing I didn't like was that the sinks were a little uncomfortable but Jeffrey gave a nice head massage as he washed my hair, which was a nice touch. :) read more

Bernae is amazing (for both a fantastic conversation and a beautiful cut/style)! Worked my hair from absolute garbage to a layered, textured, swishy masterpiece. I had foolishly cut my hair after growing out an old cut and desperately needed it fixed. Bernae listened intently and followed through in thinning out my hair and texturing it just like I've always wanted! My head doesn't feel like I'm wearing a floppy hat all the time, it's wonderful! I'm only sad they were out of the ghost oil, but I'll be back soon for it! Consider me converted. I am so glad to have these guys in the neighborhood! This was my second visit to hair.comb and it was just as great as the first! Walked in around 11am and was sat down pretty much immediately. Jeffrey cut my hair today and he was fantastic! I came in with a vague idea of what I wanted and a quick googled picture, which could have gone wrong in many ways (and has at other establishments). But Jeffrey knew exactly what to do and took the time to make sure I loved my new haircut. :) Super friendly, casual atmosphere, and great prices for quality haircuts! I asked for a simple lob with a slight A line and I got just what I asked for. My friends say they really like my hair and for the prices around Seattle it's definitely one of my top choices. Bernae did an excellent job on my haircut! I walked in on a Wednesday afternoon (didn't make an appointment) and she was so professional and took care of me right away. She was very transparent about pricing and what was included, which was helpful because I didn't even have to ask! She was lovely conversation and really took time evaluating my hair and making sure I was part of her thought process, where to cut, where I part my hair, which products I'm ok with, and asking me for feedback as she went. I wanted a simple trim to take the split ends off my long hair, and she really delivered and made the former wispy/fried ends of my hair, clean and healthy. If I could give zero or negative stars, I would. I should have just walked out after the woman who 'greeted' me told me to "chill out" after I asked whether we could fit in my appointment during my hour-long lunch break. She spent the next 40 minutes passively aggressively criticizing me and inflicting discomfort; I prayed the whole time that she wouldn't purposely cut my hair crooked out of sheer rudeness. I didn't expect to receive the kind of customer service you associate with the DMV or dealing with Comcast's call center, but you get what you pay for. Let me say first as a caveat that I am a special type of person when it comes to getting my haircut. I have thick, coarse hair that also gets extremely frizzy post-blow dry. It is almost on the verge of unmanageable if you do not layer and thin it out correctly. I came to hair.comb purely on the basis that it has an incredibly good rating, but then I realized that my hair is just different by the end of my haircut here. I called in to make sure that they have stylists who know how to manage thick, frizzy Asian hair. A woman on the phone told me that they were all experienced in terms of dealing with Asian hair, so I believed her. But I digress. The product of my visit here was the complete opposite of what I had wanted. I came in with thinned, layered hair that simply needed a trim length-wise. I walked out with poorly layered hair that managed to turn into a bob (i.e a straight cut instead of a V-shape). This is honestly the worst case scenario that I imagined in my head and this is what I received. I hated it because it made my hair look even thicker than when I had just walked in. How does that even happen? I attentively watch hair stylists throughout the years handle my hair, and she cut it as if it were anybody else's hair, too. If you're going to cut it "by the book," that doesn't work for a lot of women. I had to go elsewhere in Bellevue to drop another $40 to get this haircut fixed. That's $80 total for a trim, including tip. So, if you have similar-sounding hair as me, I would not recommend this place at all. Go find some place else. If you have nice, fine, and manageable hair, this would probably be an okay place to go. The only reason I gave it 3-stars and not 2-stars is because the girl who serviced me was really pleasant. read more

WOW!! I have been searching for someone to be "my personal stylist" as I seemed to have had one bad experience after another, and that's just what I found at this salon! Lindsey (the one with purple hair) treats me like my haircut and color is the most important thing in her world at the time, and I so appreciate it! She listens and is patient with me as I try to figure out exactly what I would like. She also gives me styling tips to be able to re-create the awesomeness when I'm at home. I have never had a hairstyle that I get complimented on so much as I have since I started seeing Lindsey. Seriously, actual strangers have stopped to tell me how great my hair looks. ...and did I mention the AMAZING scalp massage during the shampoo? Man, I'd go back in there just for one of those! The entire staff at this salon are easy-going, funny, and fun to be around. I would absolutely recommend this salon to anyone!! After having lived in the U-District area for 4 years, I only realized there was another chic hair salon on the Ave other than Ten Pachi on the 55th. However, hair.comb is located conveniently closer to the the center of the Ave, and does not require you to make an appointment at least 2 weeks in advance. I just walked in and got my haircut with Jeffrey, who's such a bright personality. He nailed the bob cut that I had in mind--just the right length, just the way I want it. My bad for taking so long to write a review about a place I've been going to since they first opened. The owner, Anne, had been cutting my hair prior to opening Hair.comb. She is fabulous at what she does. She was located in lower Queen Anne which made it very convenient for me since I live on top of the hill. When she opened Hair.comb, which was a much longer drive than lower QA, I didn't even think about staying local because she always did such a wonderful job on my hair. Each time. As they say, "stuff flows downhill". What I mean by that is Hair.comb employs people like Anne who are equally skilled at their craft. Due to my tough schedule, I started seeing Rebecca about a year ago and I continue to be pleased with the results on my head not to mention the always invigorating conversation during my stay. The biggest benefit at Hair.comb, beyond the vibe and people, is that I get salon quality service at very reasonable rates. Service, in my opinion, is what differentiates businesses, and I have always been treated well at Hair.comb. What more do I need to say? One more thing to say: people I've sent there continue to go there. In fact one guy I work with who I sent to Hair.comb, and is sitting across the room for me, is due for a hair cut. I've been getting my hair cut here since I was an undergrad. The ladies working here do a great job and from what I can recall, the price of a haircut ($25) has not changed within the past few years. They do accept walk-ins but I'd recommend setting up an appointment beforehand. Keep in mind they are not open on Mondays. Also, for parking there is the old Rite-Aid lot. Do not pay beforehand, the salon will validate it for you (asking for a dollar donation, though). So there you go, get a fresh do and walk out pretending like you're in a Garnier commercial, tossing and flippin your hair like there is no tomorrow. Oh wait, that's just me. read more

Hair[dot]comb just happened to be the first place I saw when I wandered down to the Ave in search of a haircut. That was 11 years ago. Despite the fact that I moved from the U-dist years ago, I still make the trip to Hair[dot]comb whenever I need my hair did. That's not to say I go there out of sheer blind devotion. No sir. I tried going to a couple of other places, to test the waters so to say, but I always regretted doing so. It's tough to appreciate a bad haircut until you're on the receiving end of one. After those experiences I've stuck with Hair[dot]comb. Not only are they skillful with the shears, they're also really pleasant and friendly people. Anne, the owner, is great. Teeny tiny little place... I've literally walked by hair.comb several times a week since September and had never seen it before I made my appointment here. The space is small on the inside, too, and it smells a little bit musty and stale. But, that's all the bad I have to say. I called in the morning and was able to get an appointment that day for a haircut! The women there are very kind and welcoming. I was scheduled with Misty, and she was great. She chatted with me the whole time, and gave me a ton of advice about how to treat my hair better. She also gave me her opinion regarding my request and helped me come up with the best haircut solution for my hair type. She gave me a great wash (she is not gentle, and I'm super tender-headed, so that was an adventure) and then also dried my hair afterward. I was STOKED to realize that all of this cost only $30! Just walked in with my husband who is from a different country (but who speaks English well, just not as fast and clear) & he shyly asked a short, blonde woman how much it would be to get his haircut. She looked at him and said with huge eyes, "WHAT?" And he asked again. She replied "$30" in a super condescending, rude tone. I went here twice, once for a trim (which was fine), and once to get my hair cut from a long bob back to a pixie. Even though i showed her photos of what I wanted, Jacque gave me what can only be described as a mixture of a mullet and a soccer mom's haircut. I went to another salon later to have it fixed, and it took not one but two different stylists to get my hair back in shape. If you're just looking for a trim or if you're on a really tight budget, hair.comb is probably fine. But I won't be back. read more

Amazing. I came in today to get my hair washed and styled because I hurt my knuckles on my both hands and cant wash my hair. Misty did my hair and she saw my knuckles and she said to me she will be right back. When she came back, she got me bandages, finger gloves and some lotion for the wounds. She was so great and she taught me how to blow dry and style them (some tips and tricks) because I just dont blow dry my hair on a daily basis. Will be coming back for sure! Though Misty did a fairly good job with the specific hair service my wife wanted, she was extremely rude, and arrogant throughout process. Her behavior and approach was not at all appropriate. She seemed to be in a hurry with no time to actually discuss what my wife wanted done. She was frustrated every time my wife asked a question, or asked for clarification. Even though my wife was told the appointment would be long, Misty scheduled another person close to the end of the appointment. That poor person had to wait for my wife which made her uncomfortable. Because of this last minute screw up in scheduling by Misty, she could not even dry off my wife's hair at the end. Overall, we do not recommend getting a hair service from specifically Misty. read more

As a temporary Seattle resident, when my sons and I got a bit too shaggy we needed to find a place to get our grooming on. Our experience and comb(dot)com was the best haircut experience I personally have had and it was a wonderful experience even for my youngest, who as a 5 year old, tends to dislike anyone that touches his head. I get my hair cut very, very rarely, and thus was a little nervous going to a new hair place on one of the few times that I was getting it cut. The price for a ladies's cut ($30) is great. I almost opted to go to a more expensive place to feel more like I was making sure my one hair cut in a long time was worth it. However, I ended up going here, and it was great. My stylist, Rebecca, was kind and listened attentively as I blathered on about what I thought I wanted with my haircut - I am a low maintenance type of hair person (and generally know little about hair), and I often worry that stylists will look down on that, but she never made me feel inferior because of that. Rather, we talked about what types of cuts/styles would work best with the amount of maintenance that I was interested in doing. She clearly knew what she was doing, but again, never made me feel inferior for my lack of knowledge. Despite the lower price than many other salons, I didn't feel like my cut was skimped on at all. Rebecca took her time cutting my hair, and was also happy to explain anything that I asked about. The rest of the staff there were so friendly and kind; it was like being in a salon with a bunch of friends. What a wonderful atmosphere. And did I mention the price? I mean, I think that $30 is a lot to pay for a haircut, but when most places want to charge closer to $60, this is a wonderful price. In short, the next time that I need to get my haircut, I will be coming back here! With one trip, they have earned my repeat business. It's not a 5-star review just because I don't feel like I have been there enough to evaluate if they are truly awesome, or if I just had a good first experience. I had a great experience with hair.comb and Misty specifically. Trying to find a new hair salon when you move cities is nerve-wracking and so far I'd been unsuccessful (freaked out by bad phone manner, too mixed reviews online at a lot of the conveniently located places for me, too expensive &c.). I called up hair.comb in the late afternoon mostly on a whim to get a cut - a completely painless process which I took to be a good sign - and got an appointment within half an hour. The place is tiny (Misty described it affectionately as a hallway) but clean and comfortable enough. I came in with a basic idea of what I wanted and Misty asked a lot of questions to make sure she understood what I was asking for. She also made suggestions and I found her confidence really reassuring. The cut turned out excellent - exactly what I wanted and only $35! I'm definitely coming back for my next haircut. read more

I made an appointment with Jeffery based on the yelp reviews and here I am adding another one. He's the best. I was tempted to not write a review because I don't want him to become so unavailable that I can't make an appointment with him. He did exactly what I wanted and it was the first time in a LONG time (possibly ever) that I left a salon thinking "yep, that's what I had in mind". He'll tell you what will or won't work in your hair and will modify what you want to make it work with your hair. 5 stars all around. read more
