Easy quick and nice haircut. I just moved here, and was looking for a place where they can cut my poofy Asian hair. Gave this place a shot. Pretty happy! Walked in, and the lady put me in a chair and asked how I'd like my hair cut. I told her the same just shorter. She said ok and went to work. She didn't ask what type of men's haircut I wanted (online it has 3 different levels at different prices). I'm assuming the default is the $25 "premium" cut, which online still says $24. You don't get a hairwash at first. She sprays you w/a misting spray. The shampoo comes after your haircut is finished followed by a really quick "scalp massage" (don't expect anything great. Just a quick simple 5-10 second lather with some oil or something). I asked her to cut one part of my hair a little more at the end since it was sticking out. She knew exactly what I meant. I came in with dry damaged hair. Jennifer took the time to give me an amazing hair wash that almost put me to sleep. I have been many places but this was probably the best scrub my head has ever gotten. She listened to what I wanted and asked questions. Made sure my part was where I wanted it and gave me a great cut ! She was also very gentle and sweet! It's so hard to find a place that does a great job for a reasonable price! All I can say is Kieu is an amazing person and fantastic hair stylist. Her work is so outstanding that I'm convinced to take the time to write her a second review. June 29 of 2014 was my Wedding Day and my wedding wouldn't have been perfect if Kieu wasn't there. Having 6 bridesmaids is not easy and as you know we women are difficult, especially when it comes to looking good! Lol... Of course, I thought oh boy this is going to be fun and stressful at the same time but Kieu had it all under control. She designed an amazing updo for each girl and made them all look phenomenal. Best of all they were all happy with the results, impressed by her talent and how quickly she worked. I went in with a photo of what I would like to have my hair cut and colored to look like and the owner said she could do it, no problem. After 2+ hours and $130, my hair was cut unevenly and terribly colored. After the "reveal" I told her that it looked differently from what we discussed and she became defensive and wouldn't admit there was a problem. Consequently, I didn't trust her to fix my hair so I had to go to a high end salon for correction, ultimately costing me another $310. Very disappointing experience. I realize her prices are cheaper than other local salons but it isn't worth it. read more

My go-to place haircut place for years now! Jennifer and Kim are always fun to talk to and catch up with. I usually call in to make an appointment but walk-in's are always welcomed. For a men's haircut, I pay $25 for the haircut and shampoo. I always tip because of the quality and care they put into making me looking hip and cool again. I have referred many of my friends to this place and will continue doing so. I promise that you'll leave feeling great with a smile on your face! read more

I would recommend this place, but have a hard time giving them a 5 based on the experience that may have been out of their control. The hair cut was a 5 and the quality of the service that I received was also a 5. The deduction in 1 star came from the fact that one of the stylists had their kid there and had to put them in the waiting area and entertain them with a loud iPad game/video while the stylist helped the customer. It wasn't a professional experience but I don't know if it was a one off experience or happens often. I will probably return, but would love it to be a more professional experience and I would gladly change my rating to a 5. read more

I've been coming here for about 2 years or so now and find Jennifer to be reliable and she's just a great person. She is pretty hilarious if she gets talking and she's real easy-going. I come here mostly for hair maintenance, which is the majority of my haircuts and she never lets me down, especially if I'm really clear about what I want. I do notice in the afternoons that she can get a bit backed up as she attempts to accommodate people calling in to make appts and walk-ins in almost a first-come, first-serve fashion. Since I expect this, I only come early or when I have time to wait, and have never had to wait more than maybe 15 minutes, but typically much less or not at all. Occasionally, if I'm looking for advice on a new way to style my hair or I have an important event coming up, I'll splurge on one of the trendier and pricier places in town (sorry Jennifer!) but for the most part J's salon is my cut! read more

One word: mullet. I'm torn between one and two stars, as the color was awesome but my hair...I asked for an inch and some how, I am mising about 4 inches...plus, I have a mullet, ala my 7th grade hair. It's not exactly sophisticated, more like bad bob. Stay away from here if you have fine hair. She did offer to give me a free haircut next time, but I just can't risk it. Off to get it fixed, as I have no choice, since the layers, are well, layered into a mullet. P.S. I really, and mean really, have no hair left. He layered my fine hair into nothin'. P.S 2. This is really and truly the ugliest haircut I have ever had. Even after getting it "fixed". I was pleased with the cheap haircut that I had at the time. My hair was too long, it needed to be shorter, it needed to happen immediately, and they helped me out. I didn't much care for the skin infection they gave me when they buzzcut into the flesh of my neck with their trimmer, however. I didn't realize that I had a subcutaneous thing happening for months as it was on the back of my head. I believe that I have a nice scar there now, but for months people were telling me that I might want to go to the doctor when proper people were trimming my neck. I ignored them and eventually over the better course of a year, it went away. So yeah. I pay more for haircuts now. I go to a proper barber or to the hair people that I must schedule a week in advance. No more cheap infection haircuts for me. read more

Probably the friendliest service I've encountered in a Salon. Never been here before, but I was immediately won over by the kindness that one of the hairdressers had for an older gent. He had trouble getting up and moving from the couch so she helped him up and walked him carefully to her station. Awesome! As for me, Kieun (hope I got it right) was absolutely delightful. She asked how I liked my hair cut and if there was any style I preferred. I'm pretty simple so I just let her take over. She knew what she was doing and I left a happy customer with a nice clean cut. The price was just right too. $15 in this city? Forget the place I was dishing out $35 every three weeks. Score. I'll be coming back here again. If you want to avoid the snobby higher end salons and access to free parking (front and behind the building) I highly suggest this place. read more

I started going here a few months ago after purchasing a deal on AmazonLocal. They charge: $15 - standard haircut $20 - haircut with shampoo and short scalp massage $30 - Signature haircut (includes extra long scalp and next massage) The two ladies who run the place are very friendly and do a great job. The haircuts are as good or better than the downtown 'gentlemen's salons' (you know, the ones with big screen tvs and black leather sofa's) and then they add a scalp and neck massage.... all for 25% to 50% less. I made an appointment on a weekday morning to get my hairs cut at J's. I mainly chose this place because it's really close to my house; it's in that same little complex that has a dry cleaner, Eastlake Yoga, and that overpriced sushi restaurant where I will never eat again. So, as I gathered from other Yelpers, the owner Kieu (pronounced "Q') was super nice. She gave me a great haircut. It's a little shorter than we talked about, I think, but it looks good and I'm totally happy with it. While I was there, Kieu and I were the only people in the salon, so she had to step away a few times to answer the phone, but I didn't mind. The appointment took about an hour and the cost was $30. Eureka! I may have found my new haircut place. I thought that this would be easier because there are haircut salons o'plenty everywhere. But not where they do a simple man cut for $10 (yay). That $10 figure is the magic number for me because either A) the expensive places can't justify the high price because I can't tell the difference for the money. Or B) The affordable places suck. I am a guy and usually sport a No-B.S. haircut, nothing too flamboyant, G.Q. J's does not suck. It is located on Eastlake at the corner of Louisa (by Louisa's bakery). The shop is spacious, clean, and nice. If you are around Lake Union or the U district, J's is pretty convenient. Kieu (pronounced Q) was professional , pleasant and helpful. She provided above and beyond good service which is always a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting a shampoo but got one anyway. She also suggested a really good conditioner for my type hair. If you are a guy, sort of elitist to please, but at the same time looking for reasonable prices in this area, you should stop in and give her a try, see what you think. As of this writing it was my first stop there, so I don't have a long track record to judge the consistency of service. My first haircut was a nice experience so that will get me back for a second. My Partner & I went here for the first time hoping to find a great place for haircuts in our neighborhood (Eastlake). Voila; J's Salon is what we were looking for! The new/most recent owner is who cut my hair. I'm afraid I won't spell her name correctly so I'll refrain from putting it here. She was friendly and even introduced herself by shaking my hand prior to taking me for my appointment. She proceeded to have pleasant conversation throughout my timely, yet not rushed, haircut. It was nice to hear why/how she came to be owner of J's salon. Our haircuts were $15 each which is a deal over having to go to a place like Mastercuts, Supercuts, Great Clips, etc. They also offer great products, including the up & coming Woody's line. There is parking out front too. In Seattle, if that's not reason enough to go, then I don't know what is... Highly recommend! read more

I've been going here ever since I moved to Eastlake. Kieu is a great stylist and runs a great shop. Very clean, friendly and inviting, not to mention she leads a great conversation. Her signature cut service is top notch, very relaxing and she's very detail oriented. The head and neck massage are worth the money alone... and you get a haircut! I've been looking for a good place to get a haircut that doesn't cost a fortune, and I think I've found the right place. Kieu--the stylist and salon owner--was very friendly, courteous and professional. She listened carefully to how I wanted it cut and I was very happy with the result. I also got the signature service which came with a fantastic scalp massage--I was hesitant about getting it at first, since most scalp massages I get at other places barely feels like a tickle. Kieu knew how to apply the right amount of pressure and it was a nice way to finish the cut. Make sure you call ahead, even the day of, to schedule an appointment. I'm not sure how many stylists are typically on shift at once, but when I went it was just Kieu--who had to take a few appointment calls while working on my hair. I didn't mind, though, since it's a relatively new business. Hopefully business will pick up enough that they can justify hiring a receptionist in the future. read more

Kieu fixed my hair, and its much better than what the previous hairstylist, Sammi did. It's still short, and a little choppy (prolly because Sammi had cut the top layer so short that it can't really be saved). But yeah, ladies... look for Kieu if you want to get a haircut in J's salon. read more

First off, I want to clear a possible misconception. Kieu DOES still work at J's Salon. I'm not sure where one of the reviewers got his information from, but he is wrong. Kieu just cut my hair a couple weeks ago. Anyways, I love this place and I've been a regular here for the past couple years. Kieu is very friendly and good at what she does. She listens to what you want from your haircut and does an excellent job of achieving that. Also, my two cents: when you are finding a new salon, you should give the person that cuts your hair a few tries. Give them some time get to know what you like and what you want. read more

Absolutely the worst place to get hair colored. I was going from blond to brunette and the color was spotty and there are streaks of brown everywhere. When I told the manager that it wasn't the way I wanted it then she was very rude and would not admit her mistakes. I payed $100 to have my hair look terrible. Never coming to this place ever again. If you ever want your hair to look even remotely good do not come to this place. Overcharged for the worst hair color I've ever had. Please do not come to this salon. read more

The hairdressers here are a neighborhood staple. I've gotten cuts at Raven's on Capitol Hill, but I think J's beats them in terms of price - as well as a better haircut. I've gone several times now (just for a haircut) and left pretty darn happy each time :D You guys know how a good haircut can have you feeling good for the next couple of days. I was happily surprised to find this salon right by me. First off, hear around Eastlake there were no other salons open on Mondays, and second they all seemed ridiculously expensive. J's is having a "grand re-opening" offer of $15 cuts for women. And that was for a wash cut and style. You can't beat that! The woman running the shop was very helpful in figuring out what I wanted, and was very detailed in making sure everything was perfect. Keiu's no longer cutting hair (so I'm told). Went twice: once by one of the other stylists; 2nd time by Kieu. While Kieu did a great job, she's no longer there. Got a mediocre haircut by the other stylist - nothing to write home about; reasonable for the price. If J's salon was ever "THE place" for men's haircuts... it isn't now. read more

Probably the best haircut in the dozens I've had in my 6 years in Seattle. I didn't feel rushed or unwelcome, and she didn't argue with me on semantics when I told her what I wanted done (yes, all things I've experienced before). What's best is that I didn't walk out of there thinking, "well, it'll look better in a week or so . . ." like I usually do. I've been happy with my haircut from the moment she finished it. The prices, for a man at least, are very reasonable and include some nice perks like scalp massage, etc. I honestly think I'll be sticking with this place for a while. read more
