After reading the Yelp reviews i was so excited to try J's! I was extra excited to get out of the house and go to a restaurant i've never tried before. I placed an order to go. The staff was very friendly. Restaurant looked clean, nice decor. My "to go" order was wrapped nicely. I ordered the chicken with vegetables with fried rice. Came with soup as well. Unfortunately, there wasn't much flavor at all in this dish. It was ok, just not great. I really enjoy trying fried rice at different restaurants, this fried rice again was nothing special - its very dark, and the only item i could see in the rice was eggs. Again, i was disappointed. On the other hand, i ordered some crab ragoons and really liked them! Nicely filled and fried with the yummy dipping sauce!! This saved the day! I had the bar set very hight due to the excellent yelp reviews, i guess i need to try something different next time - something with more flavor. :) read more

They must have changed ownership, the food quality and taste has gone down substantially. Nothing had taste like it did before, it's gone down hill. The hot and sour soup tasted like water and black pepper, the lo mein tasted like spaghetti with soy sauce and pepper steak tasted like bland meat. Food is okay. Not the best - you'll over pay for what you get. I've been here a handful of times and never had a great experience. But it's close and local so I keep going back. But not anymore. The customer service is terrible. I waited almost an hour for a to go order and it turned out my food was on the counter waiting. When I questioned why they didn't let me know the manager told me to "deal with it" and "take my food". Very rude. Like I said, I won't be going back. read more

I've been to J's Asian Cafe twice now and we were already talking about when our visit to J's will be. Staff is great! They are incredibly friendly and helpful. They made sure we had everything needed, refilled our drinks without asking, and checked up on us just the right amount. The interior is nice and clean. The dining area is an open area consisting of some booths and tables. They offer a pretty large variety of dishes from different Asian cultures - Malaysian, Japanese, & Thai. Everything we've tried so far has been good. Portions are generous too. Can't wait to navigate through the rest of the menu. Some of the dishes we enjoyed here so far are the following - Sizzling Rice Soup- good stuff - Pad Thai with shrimp (generous portion including the protein) -Basil Fried Rice -salt and pepper seafood/shrimp -roti canai ( very very good here. The roti comes hot off the press and its pillowy and great). - Happy Family (comes sizzling on an iron plate) - Massaman curry Love having this restaurant in the neighborhood. This was probably the worst restaurant that I've been to in a while. There was a baby roach floating in the top of my drink (in first picture) . I ordered the honey pecan chicken and the chicken tasted exactly like Mcdonald's nuggets. I'm guessing this place is known for their sushi, because everything I ordered wasn't good. Their fried rice was probably the worst part of the meal (besides the bug in my drink ofc) , it was cold,hard, and hard to eat. The crab cream cheese rangoon only had cream cheese in them and I have no Idea why.Don't even let me get started on the service as well, we barely saw our waitress and had to find other servers to get our check and to talk to the manager (asked for the manager and instead another waitress ended up coming over...) I probably will never come back and if you enjoy authentic asian food I would steer clear of this place! read more

Gave this place a try based on the great yelp reviews. However my experience here was more of a meh than yay. First the postives, definitely very good in terms of price. You definitely do get good amount of food for the lunch portions. The decor is absolutely amazing as well and really plenty of seating, plus the service was pretty nice too. However the food was just not great in my opinion. The curry chicken I tried didn't have much flavor other than salty and spicy. The rice I thought was a bit hard too and definitely could have been better. The soup appetizer I had was pretty nice however. Overall I think its a lunch place to come if you're looking specifically at their array of Asian food offering and will definitely be easy on your wallets as well. We also used a coupon in the mailing for even more discounts that they honored without questions so definitely another plus there. read more

I typically hate writing 1-star reviews and try to be as fair as possible when I review companies, but I do feel that in this instance, it's warranted. I placed an order at 7:14 PM tonight, and by 8:26 PM, the order had not yet arrived. I decided to call in and find out what was going on, as I was told it would take 55 minutes, and the guy who answered first told me he couldn't find my order anywhere. I asked him to look it up by phone number, which he did, and he then located the order. He spoke to the driver, and the driver told him that the food had already been delivered. I told him that we didn't hear the doorbell, and the driver claimed that he rang the doorbell twice, someone answered, and they received the food. I knew no one had received the order, so I opened the door to see if the food was there, and it was sitting in the cold on the welcome mat. When I mentioned this to the man on the phone, he got incredibly snippy with me and told me to check the food and that my two options were: "If it's cold, let us know, and we'll send out another order," or something along the lines of, if it's fine, problem solved. I called the man out on his rudeness and lack of courtesy, and he basically shrugged it off. I told him that we would never be ordering from him again, and he, again, shrugged it off. I just opened the bag and also noticed the rice was missing, as well. The last time we ordered from this place, the food was decently good but nothing special. This just cemented the fact that these guys aren't even worth the time or money. read more

I ordered a large Kari Laksa Coconut Milk Curry Noodles Soup for my lunch today. It took a while for the servers to prepare the noodles. Eating the fried crisps helps to saturate the hunger somewhat as I tend to eat a lot of food. However, the crisps they provided are good entrees to the noodles and the noodles themselves were alright at best. They need more flavor, especially in the soup as the soup itself tastes like water with a bit of salt and pepper sprinkled within it. For spicy noodles, I would expect better taste. Price overall is $10.95 with a $0.85 tax and $1.97 automatic tip making it $13.77 total overall. The beef within also needs flavor as it tastes like wet sponge. The staff are friendly enough and are helpful when providing the provisions to accommodate a dining experience. Despite my dissatisfaction with the food, I couldn't fault the staff's friendly service. They were friendly and attentive, eager to provide a pleasant lunch experience. Whenever I required additional provisions, such as extra condiments or napkins, they promptly fulfilled my requests. Their willingness to accommodate and assist added a small silver lining to an otherwise lackluster meal which in the other reviews, it appears that the owner, 'J' has left for retirement and there was some reshuffling amongst the chefs. As for ambiance, the restaurant is clean, lighting is good enough for friends and dating, and the overall atmosphere is welcoming, so no issues there. But if you want a cheap place that satiates your hunger, this is a good place to start as the total price is not bad despite the taste being somewhat bland compared to the last time I went to this place. read more

We have been searching for an Asian restaurant and this place totally fit the bill. We ordered a pallet of food to try out various menu items and were not disappointed. The food, admittedly, needed some salt, especially the rice, but the flavors were delicious and it felt so fresh. Nothing was heavy or greasy. It was fantastic. Hot and sour soup was probably the best I've ever had. We really enjoyed the egg drop soup as well. We didn't care for the pineapple fried rice too much, but that was more a personal preference than something to knock J's about. BBQ sore ribs are not the traditional ones you get from a typical Chinese place, they are Korean short ribs and soooo good. Shrimp summer rolls also delish. We tried live every noodle. I didn't really care for the ones with the squid in it, they tasted soooo fishy, but if you like seafood it will probably be fine. Loved the lo mein and beef noodles. Crispy noodles served with the soup were so greasy but We ate them anyway. They gave us plenty of soy sauce, chopsticks, and fortune cookies which we appreciated. First time I visited and dined-in was a year ago when I was in town; the service and food was pleasantly memorable. I went again Recently and really enjoyed the take-out food. It was fresh and hot. We got several dishes to share with family. The Sesame chicken was a favorite. I like that the food wasn't too greasy or saucy. This is our new "Chinese food" place-they serve other dishes besides Chinese. I'm spoiled by working close to Buford Highway, so for me Asian food in Alpharetta generally misses the mark compared to the more authentic grub I get down that way. *I love you Canton House and Chinatown* With that being said, we gave J's a try on a whim one night and was not only pleasantly surprised, but shocked is more appropriate. I honestly went in thinking sweet and sour chicken would be life. Side note: I don't eat that-it's chicken nuggets and sugar sauce. Wait Staff-Super friendly and very attentive, no complaints about anyone we have been waited on by. Menu-It's mixed, you can find a little bit of everything, Chinese, Maylasian, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese. You can find some more traditional dishes as well as the standard more Americanized. Quality-Everything we've had over the last two months has been fresh, well made and flavorful. Noodles have been prepared properly, sushi was fresh and not fishy tasting, meats were crispy when fried and seared properly when grilled. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was a seafood noodle dish that the hubs tried. It was a little too fish sauce forward,for me, but he enjoyed it. This place hands down beats any other place up here for Asian food. Even converted my dad after dragging him to try it-instead of Simon's. He was a died hard Happy Garden fan(peachtree corners)before they closed. Then he stuck with ChinChin off Holcomb Bridge until they closed. So I ordered his favs for him-the way he used to get them from the old places, but hasn't been able to from Simon's. It was our first time at J's. The ambiance is unique and inviting. The menu covers cuisines from Thai, Malaysian and Japanese origin which in my point spreading too thin. We ordered pineapple fried rice, Kari vegetables, Panang curry, roti Canai, 2 sushi rolls and coconut soup. The soup was sub par quality and did not have substance to it. Roti Canai was outstanding and a must try! On some day Certain Sushi rolls are 50% off and we used that offer. It was delicious. They messed up panang curry. We asked for spicy version and they did not follow that direction. We were excite for Malaysian recipe Kari Vegetable curry but it was a disappointment. It was tasting not up to the mark and seemed missing something. The staff is cordial and attentive but few had a language barrier. We have ordered J's several times and have had mixed experiences. We ordered today and was completely shocked by the quality of the food. We ordered 2 cooked sushi rolls which smelled horrible and had to be thrown away in our outside trash can to reduce the fishy smell in my house. Pan-Asian places in the suburbs tend to be hit-or-miss but J's is super reliable. You can get Chinese, Japanese, or Thai and it's all pretty good. They have good lo mein, pad Thai, and sushi. They have this amazing mural of koi fish. read more

Very good Malaysian food. Love the curry laksa here. I also like the assam vegetables with tamarind sauce. Everything smells so good and tastes good here. The fish head soup is very good here too. I try to eat it slowly to enjoy every bite. One of the owners(chef) is from Little Malaysia that used to be located off of Buford Hwy. THAT was a good place! I had to update my review. They're more like a 3.5 now because the quality of the food from sitting down in the restaurant vs placing a to go order has a huge difference. I've eaten inside about 3 times and ordered to go orders twice. All three times I've eaten there, it's been fresh tasting and delicious. The two times I placed a to go order for myself and my boyfriend, we both were very disappointed. I suggested this place to my mom. She's eaten there once in the past and loved it. This past week, she placed a to go order. She called me (this is without me ever mentioning my to go experience) and said the food was not good at all! I'm not sure what that is about, but it makes me go hmmmmm. I looked at other reviews that were 2 and 3 stars and this seems to be a common thing when someone orders to go. I ordered my food through GrubHub and received it was delivered right on time. The delivery man was very nice so I tipped him a little jit even though they charge a $3 delivery fee. For $25 I got: 1 Thai Tea Brown Riced California Rolls (8 rolls) 6 steamed dumplings Cucumber Salad J's Donuts The Thai tea was very good but the California rolls tasted very bland. I had to add on brown sugar and lemon to get any taste out of them. The dumplings were good as well and soy sauce was included. The cucumber salad were just a bunch of cucumbers sliced up with watered down soy sauce. The donuts were okay as well but only tasted like fried bread pieces. But for about $5 they do include a lot of miniature donuts with chocolate sauce. It was just an average meal but with good customer service. read more

This restaurant is an unexpected surprise to this John's Creek area. You might expect to find an authentic spot like this in Buford Highway or Chinatown, but here it is in the suburbs of Atlanta. Especially noteworthy is the extensive and multicultural lunch menu, which is available seven days a week. This is the best deal you will find within a 20 mile radius. Whenever I see an advertisement for multiple types of food, I know that it will probably not be good. However, in this case they are true to having good Malaysian, Thai, and Chinese food. The biggest strength is their Malaysian food. It is similar to Mamak on Buford Highway. I would recommend the Malaysian soups, chili dishes, sambal dishes, and the chili fish. Second is the Chinese food. This is a super solid spot for any type of American Chinese dishes. The sesame chicken, chicken and broccoli, and mongolian chicken and beef are perfect. I will stay away from them and you want to chicken because the batter is too thick. In short, this is a great place for a casual and an expensive dinner out, and it is a great place for an authentic Malaysian experience. Generally, I'm wary of places touting several different types of cuisine. But I had a hankering for noodles, and J's caught my eye on my drive home. They've been open for a week at this point, the restaurant was quiet, but it was charming, well spaced and the smell was so inviting. I ordered the Kari Laksa - a Malaysian coconut spicy curry soup, perfect for a rough day. The broth was delcious, and the hot sauce they brought by afterwards was FIRE. In all senses of the word. I was amazed by the atmosphere in this place. I felt pretty clam after I entered this place. It is a very clean restaurant. They have a lot of parking spaces outside of this restaurant, so you don't have to worry about parking. My friends and I went to this place for lunch. They have a lot of choices for lunch special, they have Chinese food, Malaysia food and Sushi. Their price is also very reasonable. It's about $7 for each dish, at the same time, you can get rice, soup and spring roll for lunch special. We ordered okra, spicy basil chicken, pineapple fried rice. They all hit my spot.
