I miss Tina and her staff. My wife and I have been going here for a very long time on weekly basis. Since the new owners took over, we have given them a couple tries and tonight was the last time for us. The food has dropped in quality and quantity. Portions have shrunk in size. For example: ahi poke app I received tonight has less than 50% of tuna than previous orders. It is more like an avocado salad with less than 10 chunks of tuna. My wife has been a chef here in atlanta for over 25 yrs. She has run very large Asian and seafood restaurants for many years. She too was less than thrilled with her sumo sushi order, stating the fish was not that fresh and was even more disappointed that the rice was hard/under cooked. As well, when I asked to switch out the roll with the order they stated there is an up charge for the substitution. The shrimp tempura roll is the same price as the eel roll that comes with it. I had to show them that the price is the same in their own menu and the woman was slightly angered that I questioned the up charge for the same priced item. This place was incredible. The server was knowledgeable and very kind. The atmosphere was relaxed even though they had doordash coming in and out constantly. We didn't feel rushed and the food was hot and exceptional. We ordered the basil spring rolls, the pad thai, and the Singapore noodles. The spring rolls were fresh and delicious as something I know from experience that takes a lot of work to make they were exceptional. I could have eaten six more. It's satisfying, comes out quick and is inexpensive but nothing crave-worthy for me. I have tried Chinese dishes, Japanese sushi and Thai food here. I usually order fairly simple items like Kung Pao shrimp, scallops, or a mixture including chicken, some sort of fried rice, and my fav appetizer calamari. All of these items have always been very tasty and well presented. The calamari appetizer is large enough for me to make a meal of it. It's tender, tasty, and addictive, so be warned! Sushi Sumo seems to be very popular for sushi. I haven't tried the sushi yet but I will soon. The restaurant is small and cozy with a good quiet ambiance. Sushi Sumo is in a convenient location and offers a lot of variety of options beyond just sushi. The service is good and the restaurant has a very clean appearance. The food was well received by my party, although I personally found that the chicken tasted like it had been cooked earlier, refrigerated and then re-heated (e.g. is watery and did not appear at all fresh cooked by my estimation). The seasoning was perfect and the flavors were as expected. The Pad Thai is especially good. The quantity/serving size is very large. The prices are in line with the quality and offerings. I tried the General Tsao's chicken and it was decent, hit that American Chinese food fried delicious spot- perhaps a little too much fry. I had the egg drop soup which was also your typical salty and tasty soup. The place is small and the service is good. Our food came pretty quickly and there weren't any surprises. The menu isn't huge but it's a bit sprawling between Thai, Chinese, and Japanese. I'd be curious to try the other dishes but also somewhat suspicious of the quality of all of the types of cuisines. However, the delivery driver wanted to discuss why there was no tip on the receipt. I ordered from grubhub and when I order from a delivery service I never add the tip when I place the order. Things can happen and why should you tip before you get the food? I always adjust the tip when I rate the food. So, food comes quick and assume it will be left at the door because of Covid and no contact. The doorbell rings again and the guy starts knocking loud. I say through the door please drop food off. My favorite sushi roll right now is the Sunrise roll! With the current COVID-19 pandemic, I have noticed that they've gotten extremely busy on Friday and Saturday nights, causing a longer delivery time than normal. They expect tips even with pickup and no utensils but good food. Got to ask. They don't do anything extra. They don't speak English well and miss things on orders. When delivery items they ask for tips. The volcano roll was just an absolute mess. I'm not an 'imitation crab' person, because I prefer the real thing. However I've eaten it throughout my life with no issues - until now. The meat that was thrown on top was disgustingly slimy. The quality of the ingredients were subpar and it showed. I didn't even eat half of the order and most of it was wasted. Earned 1st star -- Great location, easy parking Sushi Sumo is located in the Fresh Market shopping center with Walgreens, Firehouse Subs and other local businesses. No issues getting into and out of this location, and there's always plenty of parking. Earned 2nd star -- Simple, clean, quiet dining room Sushi Sumo is a tiny little place. Probably room for no more than 30-50 diners, and 30 would be pushing it. There's booths on both sides with some tables in the middle. The seating for about 4-5 people at the sushi bar in back, and then it's kitchen and bathrooms. The ambiance is great for a little place like this. Quiet. I don't recall any music playing, so if you're a loud talker OR you have little kids, just be mindful that you're gonna get heard by others. Earned 3rd star -- Reasonably priced menu with good variety If you want sushi, they have it. If you want Chinese, they have it. If you want Thai and a few other things, they have it. All the prices are pretty reasonable, though 2-3 specialty sushi rolls, while filling, are gonna put you at $30 for lunch or dinner. The lunch sushi combos are around $12 - $15 and feature only the most basic rolls, but they're good, regardless. I'm a roll only sushi guy, and I can recommend the jazz roll, volcano roll and any of the standard yellowtail and tuna rolls. Chinese menu items are plentiful and the portions are good. I haven't been able to tell if lunch portions are smaller than dinner portions, but I suspect they are given the sushi menu pricing differences between the dining hours. Appetizers are plentiful and reasonably priced. Earned 4th star -- Simple, polite service; good with kids I've never had an issue with service here. Wait staff and sushi chefs are all very polite and accommodating. They're very good with kids too. My daughter LOVED my chopsticks, and the waitress got her a set of her own. They were modified (opened previously) to include a rubber band that made them more like tongs than chopsticks. Perfect for a budding sushi eater. I was very thankful for the staff going the extra mile while my daughter learned. Reserved 5th star -- For a future review update I'm holding back a 5th star. I want to experience more of Sushi Sumo. You should too. It's crazy good local eats, and it's convenient to Old Alabama Road, Haynes Bridge Road and the Newtown Park area.
