My favorite nursery in the Houston area. The owner is very nice and they have tons of hard to find citrus and fruit trees. They also have used pots for cheap. Only $7 for a used 27.50 gallon nursery pot and $4 for a 15 gallon. They have hard to find grafted loquats such as Christmas, Yehuda, and Oliver. 4 in 1 Asian pears. Lots of bonsai. JRN Nursery is huge and sprawling with a lot of variety of outdoor plants, plus the more common houseplant tropicals (similar in variety to big box stores) in both 4 inch and massive pots at reasonable prices. It does help to know what you're looking for because not everything is labeled. I highly recommend JRN for their outdoor plant selection. For Hoyas, I'd say I actually prefer their second location JRN2 for more massive mama plants of the more common Hoyas. This location tended to have mostly 4 inch pots. I would not recommend JRN or JRN2 if you're looking for rarer Hoyas. The parking lot is small and fills up even on weekday afternoons, so come early! read more

I was recommended by a friend , I saw a house plant that I liked. I try carrying it to the front office but it was too heavy for me. I kindly asked the man in the front office to help carry the plant to the counter. After I paid for it ($89 cash)with no receipt anyway he might be the boss. So asked him kindly if he can help putting the plant in my car. He said ; no I already helped you carry it to the front with one hand and the rest you can do it yourself. That man has a bad attitude, bad service. First time experience with this kind of service. I think I pulled my back muscle by trying to get the plant into my car. I will never go back to this place again. Maybe he was not happy because when I ask him for help, I interrupted his Vietnamese drama that he was watching. I was in need of milkweed for my Monarch caterpillars. I called JRN and they had several bushy milkweed plants for a reasonable price. I should have asked if they spray for insects - they do. I drove almost an hour to find out that the plants I wanted to feed my caterpillars were poisoned by insecticide. I was impressed by the size of the operation and the vast number of large and healthy garden plants that they carry. I just wish they did not spray for insects. read more

Yes they do have a huge selection of plants but I was so surprised and impressed with the golden pothos that I almost forgot everything else. They have a HUGE selection of pothos. Be careful with this store. Dishonest service. The price tag $16 is on the plant but when I took it to the cashier, he doubled the price to $37, he said the original price is wrong. For your information, the plant is 8 inches tall and in a 3 inches broken pot, not a healthy plant. This cashier man either new or temporary work in place of a familiar lady owner that I always saw at this store that we've been shopping for the last 20 years. I live very far from the store but I prefer coming here instead of the store on Alief Clodine where the cashier didn't want to answer the customer when they asked or answered with a mean answer. How long did we live in the US? Long enough to learn to be honest with customers in their business. Yes, once in awhile they will make the error in pricing but is that the way to make your business grow? Honor the price on your tags - your tag with your handwritten on the tag!!!! This place has got a massive selection of very reasonably priced plants. Most are really healthy and lush, the less healthy or cold burned ones are set aside which is nice that they don't try to pawn those off on customers. I was amazed at how inexpensive they were, at least 50% cheaper than the Houston garden centers chain, based on my multiple trips to both places this week. What you give up for the lower price is labeling so come armed with a plant ID phone app! read more

Make sure you have a couple hours to see all of their plants. You can get real turned around when submerged in all of their greatness. Some plants are more well cared for than others but other than that the prices so far seem fairly reasonable. Some directional signs and labels of the green house would be awesome! read more

I'm reading the other reviews and wondering why we didn't get this great service they're talking about. My husband went here for a bonsai tree in stead of roses for me. It was a very sweet thought, but these people saw him coming a mile away and ripped him off royally. They sold him a bonsai that was almost dead and charged him quite a bit of money for this dead bonsai. Nothing to be done about it. I'm sure they would just blame us for it now. But I saw this tree the second it came through our door and felt very sorry for my husband. They really got him good. Full price for their dying, sickly bonsai. I would never set foot in a place that does something like this to a trusting customer. They cheated us once, but it will be the only time. Beware! If you don't know a lot about plants they will take advantage of you. read more

This nursery is right off I-45 in a bit of a dreary part of town, but gardeners will travel! Unfortunately, I found this nursery very disorganized, not well tended. Many of the plants have weeds growing out of them, broken limbs. Very few items are identified or tagged with prices. There was no help available to answer questions or help bring items to the cash register. In fact, I didn't even see a cart. It appears there is quite a variety of tropical/exotic plants and fruit trees, but it was kind of wet and muddy. With no signage or help, I just left. read more

Very similar to JRN 2, but seems a little bit smaller and slightly different selection. [EDIT: i think JRN is actually larger than JRN2; the plants here seem to have more space and aren't crammed together] Both have large selections of tropical trees (guava, star fruit, coffee, avocado, lychee, etc), citrus, and subtropicals. Also some decorative plants. The place doesnt have signs, so you may need to ask the workers/owner for directions for what you're looking for, or you'll need to make an educated guess (e.g. The tropical fruits are in the greenhouses). We went looking for lychees, and they had about 20 trees in 3 gallon containers and about 5 trees in 7 gallon containers. This location had Mauritius, Hap Ik, and "sweet" lychee (sweetheart? But no clear label). We were happy to purchase the mauritius tree, which was not at JRN2 (but JRN2 had some very large Brewsters). The owner was very helpful and gave some tips for planting and helped tie up the tree so it could fit in our car. Very pleasant buying/browsing experience. This location does seem slightly smaller than JRN2, so the selection here is seems mildly smaller and the trees seem smaller (then again, maybe it was because i went in the late fall). Our main reason for coming here was because JRN2 didn't have the mauritius lychee and gave this location a shot. Edit: came back again twice in the spring. Purchased 3 black diamond wax jambu, 3 emperor lychees from line island nursery, and a white guava. The trees seem to be in good shape. The owner was very friendly and had one of the workers help us find the wax jambu. read more
