Passing by JoyFu Dim Sum and noted the sandwich board out front with their $6.66 Assorted Dumpling "Back to School Special"... which triggered my hunger. Decided to check it out. It's a pretty, modern interior, definitely a place to have a meal that would be a calming place for a bite when stepping out of the hectic Chinatown street. Service was quick and professional. Normally this assortment is $15.99, so it was a good deal for the set of 6 dumplings: Chicken, Beef, Vegetable, Chive & Pork, Pork & Cabbage, and Three Delicacies. Each dumpling was colorful and tasty, especially with a splash of Chinese vinegar!!! That being said, it was a fantastic deal, however it wouldn't be a value at the regular price and would likely sway me to opt for something else. Their soup dumplings (one of my favorite types of dumplings) were priced higher than Nan Xiang Long Bao, a place which I look forward to returning to that unfortunately doesn't have a location in this neighborhood for now. Although there are many delicious spots in Chinatown, JoyFu is a nice environment to grab a bite. Perhaps they'll have a promotion on when you stop by. Came here at mom's request on a rainy Saturday. It was pretty empty, probably because of the rain, so we were seated immediately. There is a grand opening special with the colorful dumplings for about $7 so we got one of those, the soup dumplings because it's a crime to eat at a Shanghainese restaurant and not order soup dumplings, and the stir fry noodles. Overall I thought the food was okay, the dough for the dumplings was a bit on the thicker side than I would've liked, but it was fine. Mom found the noodle stir fry a bit on the saltier side, but I thought it was fine. Service was attentive and I would consider going again. read more

Beautiful sleek restaurant that recently opened about a month or two ago. As such, they are still running their grand opening promotion, which is a BOGO offer on their xiaolongbao. I thought the window display at the door with the aunties making fresh soup dumplings was a nice touch, and I definitely get Din Tai Fung vibes from Joyfu, but I believe Joyfu's menu is more inclusive of Cantonese cuisine with the addition of dim sum and other crowd favorites likes crispy mayo shrimp and Peking ribs. I passed by and decided to order assorted colorful soup dumplings ($18) and their scallion pancake ($7.99). The soup dumplings reminded me of the Lucky Six Soup Dumplings over at Nanxiang as they both featured pork, crab meat + pork, chicken, and black truffle but Joyfu also features a vegetable and shrimp soup dumpling as well. I found the xiaolongbao to be INCREDIBLY juicy but unfortunately, most of them were overseasoned to the point of needing a lot of water to wash it down. Texturally speaking, I would recommend the pork-based ones as the vegetable xiaolongbao was too loose. The scallion pancakes were crispy but nothing to write home about. Overall, I find that Joyfu seems to cater more to tourists given their proximity to Little Italy and Chinatown as well as their prices. I will disclose that their Assorted Soup Dumplings are listed as $16.95 on the menu, but they charged my $18 for it. When I asked about it, the staff member claimed it was "for tax purposes" which smells a little fishy to me. read more

Made a reservation for 7 people at 8PM. First floor was full house when we arrived at around 7:50PM but, there is a second floor (it was empty) as well and we were seated immediately. I like the interior design of the restaurant. It kind of reminds me of a cute, classic cafe with a modern touch. The staff were nice and the service was extremely quick. The food came out piping hot, which was a great plus and the flavors of the dishes weren't too strong. My favorite of the dishes was the Black Truffle Fried Rice, it was sooooo good. I will mention that I don't think the Vegetable and Pork Soup Dumplings actually had pork in it. Or if it did, I didn't taste or feel it. Overall, my experience was pretty good. What a joyful surprise in the middle of Little Italy! While walking around Little Italy in New York, we unexpectedly came across JoyFu Dimsum, a Chinese dim sum spot--and I'm so glad we stopped! We ordered the soup dumplings, and they had a buy-one-get-one-free special, so we got to try both the traditional soup dumplings and the crab soup dumplings. Wow! Both were absolutely delicious and packed with flavorful, hot broth. The dumpling skins were delicate, and that first bite with all the savory soup inside was just so satisfying. Finding really good Chinese food in the middle of Little Italy was such a fun surprise. If you love soup dumplings, definitely give JoyFu Dimsum a try! We'll happily come back for more. read more

Solid Chinese food. There is a lot of staff that is very attentive, especially for being in their soft opening. Food came out quickly. They offer a decent amount of dim sum options and other mix of dishes that don't quite qualify it to be a Cantonese specialty restaurant (ie. there's mapo tofu, Yangzhou fried rice, beef noodle soup that has a bit of spice). This is a new Chinese restaurant located in Little Italy. The decor was surprisingly nicer and different than what I expected. The place had plenty of tables with a separate upstairs and medium size private room that could be split into 2 smaller rooms. Plenty of seating for small and large parties. The food was good overall and came out quickly. The soup dumplings were great and with buy one get one free it is a definite must have. The black pepper beef cubes was delicious as it usually is. Noodles was good but could use a little more taste. The truffle shrimp dumplings was pretty good where the truffle taste was only in dumpling wrappings. The service was good but the place was kind of empty since it was like 9p on a Sunday in Little Italy where I don't expect people to be checking for Chinese food. The nice decor, good food, and BOGO promotion, makes me want to come back again before the promotion ends. Shorter than I thought of a wait. Beef flatbread looks different from what's pictured on the menu but was pleasantly surprised by the taste. The chicken had a bit of a "fridge" taste, but the chili sauce was really good. That chili sauce would be much better with the spicy wontons instead of the peanut sauce. The Shanghai noodles were a little too wet, although the flavor was good. The beef pancake was not good. The beef noodle soup tasted like it used spaghetti instead of traditional noodles and could definitely be improved. The hot and sour soup was only lukewarm and could have been much better, especially if served properly hot. The crab roe soup dumplings didn't have enough crab flavor--I honestly couldn't tell if I was eating the original or the crab version. The best item was the original soup dumplings. The skin could be a little thinner, but the soup and flavor were decent. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back. It didn't taste authentic enough for me and seems more adjusted for an American palate. Ambiance is great. That is pretty much it. Service needs improvement; never checked on us or asked about take away. Lot of potential to improve on the rest of the menu. We had a lot left over, went to another restaurant right after because we were still a bit hungry. FYI - My review is based on my chinese palate.
