Just a short update to my old review: I have been to this Cantonese restaurant numerous times over the years, with this being my most frequent Cantonese spot along with Big/Dai Wong. The prices, of course, have gone up, but that's everything over the last several years. One of my only issues here, compared to some other spots, is their consistency, especially with the siu mei/roasted meats. I have had outstanding Roasted Pig, Roast Duck, and Peking Duck here, and other times, it just wasn't cooked nearly as well, such as the duck's fat not being rendered as much, or similar. If you want consistent dishes here, I recommend the following: Peking Pork Chops- They make the best version I've had, with the batter not being too thick and the sauce not being cloyingly sweet Garlic Aromatic Crispy Chicken- Their signature for a reason. Always aromatic, and the chicken has almost always been tender and flavorful. Singapore Rice Noodles- Plenty of curry powder flavor and a good amount of toppings Sha Cha Beef- Very tender beef with an excellent sauce The Cantonese food here has since been surpassed by a few other places that I prefer, but it's still tasty. Best experience always! Highly recommend going with a big group and getting the giant crab (and even adding on the Peking duck!). The staff is incredibly nice and they even help monitor the amount and flow of food you order so you don't over order and waste food. The experience is definitely no frills, but a memorable experience. We did the giant crab cooked three ways, dumplings, spring rolls, scallion pancakes, and then a bunch of entree dishes like beef and broccoli, general tso, etc. It's also a BYOB which makes it great for a big group. If this review was written a decade ago, there's no doubt Wu's would have been an easy 5 star establishment. Wing Shoon (#1) was upstaged by the new (wonton) king of Chinatown, the great hope of Canto up and comers, which Wu's has banked their reputation on even to this day. They managed to outlast many Canto establishments (#2) all while becoming the de facto standard of which all others would want to emulate. However, a recent visit has me wondering otherwise. My large group and I feasted and ordered a number of dishes (#3), so much so that we had to ask them to hold back because we ran out of space. They were still as busy as ever, but with one key notable difference: the service was very bad. By bad, I mean that things were not handled properly. Our reservation featured a smaller table then than what was ideal for our group. They were rushed, the slamming of their dishes down was off putting and difficult to summon during key moments of the night. While they did sing happy birthday for our birthday person, they still managed to give us grief over our less than 15% tip. Eventually we gave 18% but not without a lot of commotion. They weren't thrilled with our preference to use credit card and asked us to actually go out and get cash. I go to The City when I can. There's a direct flight from my hometown. I know a guy who's been a line chef and a food writer, he's there now. So when the Food Guy from NYC invites you to go to his favorite Chinese joint, you go. Now. Any place in NYC is going to get the harshest critique possible. I don't have a ton of Chinatowns experienced, but between San Fran, Chicago, (the limited offerings of) Detroit, Boston, and NYC, Wu's is (consider the next few words to be underlined) the best Chinese food I've had. Period. The duck was exceptional. This was the best duck I've had (outside of the first time I had Peking duck in SF by myself at 8am in the morning; you know how it goes the first time you've had something that's supposed to be a staple and that is established as the best it could possibly be, regardless of subsequent experiences). I came here recently in a group of 11 for a celebration. We made reservations in advance, but we still had to wait around 15 minutes for our table. The staff were heavily promoting the set menu, but at over $500, we didn't think it would be worth it. We ordered a la carte and the total (without tip) was around $360. Ambiance is nothing to write home about. Typical NYC Chinese place. But it's clean and quite spacious and tables can accommodate 10+ groups. What really shines here is the freshness of their ingredients and the service. We got the king crab. Yeah, it's expensive but I'm not sure I've had better king crab anywhere. They serve it three ways. Steamed with ginger, garlic and scallion, fried salt and pepper style, and fried rice. All three dishes were fantastic. What I loved the most was that they didn't over season the food so what really shined was the freshness of the ingredients. Wonton soup was excellent as the quality of the wontons was top notch. A group of ten of us went for a holiday celebration and a retirement for a family friend. Although we had reservations, we did have to wait a considerable time before being seated. They were terribly busy and I get that but waiting that length of time was a tad bit extreme in my opinion. They had preordered the Suckling pig two days before as required and while the flavors were delicious, it was served quite cold with some fat already congealing which wasn't what I expected. Get a whole chicken, it will go fast. Always a favorite is the Jumbo Shrimp w. Walnut in Mayo Sauce. The shrimp seem extra big! Delicious! This is super good. Crab served three ways, the first was fried and perfectly crisped, the second dish was steamed and the final dish came in the form of crab fried rice. Snow Pea Sprouts w. Crab Meat. Great! And of course their namesake wontons are super delicious. Nice and big and filled with fresh shrimp. My own personal preference though, is the dumplings with pork, shrimp and mushrooms. It wasn't nearly as tender as I was anticipating. The last time I had it was in Mexico the traditional way, when they cut it with a porcelain plate to prove its tenderness and break the plate on the floor with the restaurant clapping. And definitely more affordable. The Peking Duck was awesome how they have it set up for you on bao buns. However, the skin wasn't really crispy. That is the point of the dish. I'm not a huge fan of the legs in general. So that's just me. But it being cold and not crispy is why I bring it down to a 3.5-4 stars. This is a fantastic restaurant if you have a large group. I've seen some families with a table of 14 order huge orders that are shareable around the table. They even bring out a massive crab that takes up the size of the whole table before they cook it that's enough to feed a village. Too much for a small table. Mr. Wu's Wonton King is as authentic as it gets! One comes here for the food and not the ambience. In addition to the large open restaurant there is an enclosed heated outdoor spot. This place is ideal for big groups with its massive tables and large portions. It's byob (wine/hard liquor) besides beer which worked out great for us since my friend makes her own wine. Bonus no corking fee! Waiters are busy and clearly not there to chat but get you what you need. The food is delicious and extremely affordable. The menu is a little overwhelming with all of its choices. We ordered the Sauteed Razor Clams, Garlic Aromatic Chicken, Pan Fried Noodle with Beef and Sauteed Snow Peas. They also include complimentary tea and mango pudding. It might seem far being deep down in Chinatown but the F train is literally right outside the door. It's worth checking out. I was finally able to try out this New York City institution for Cantonese cuisine and it surely did not disappoint. My favorites are the suckling pig, king crab served three ways (steamed, fried, fried rice), and garlic chicken. The crab is delicious however just be prepared to spend money as it is not cheap. The suckling pig is some of the best I've had in New York. Protip is that you don't need to order a whole pig, you can get a small portion of off the a la carte menu. I recommend making a reservation for any peak-time dining as the place gets full of parties including a lot of birthday celebrations. The service is good, better than the standard for Chinatown.
