My family has been coming to this location recently and said it's the best out of all their other locations. I think they have the main chef who works out of their kitchen and trains the rest of the chefs. We came over the weekend as my uncle knows the owner and Shabu Works was a two hour wait. The staff here is so welcoming and nice. It was one of the best service I've had. EVER. We ordered: Pork & green Onion fried buns: - darn good with juicy filling Steamed pork belly with preserved greens: - salty and fatty (we liked it) Steamed Fish: - tasted hong kong style with lots of fresh green onions and ginger Steamed pork buns: - fluffy and delicious Hot & Sour soup: - satisfying but I would have preferred more sour Spicy Boiled Beef: - lots of garlic and tender beef Mongolian beef: - they prepare their beef well here as this dish was again tender with tons of onions Salt Pepper Shrimp - nicely crispy and battered Spicy Cabbage: - garlicky and fresh Eggplant with preserved egg: - I normally don't like preserved egg but this dish was pretty good. Having gone to Taiwan in 2024, my review may be a bit critical. The best dish we had was between the beef noodle soup and the garlic green beans. The portion sizes were HUGE compared to the price of each dish except for the beef roll. When we looked at the menu, it looked pricy for a fast casual spot but once the food came out, we understood that it was directly correlated to the quantity of food you're getting. Not knowing the sizes, when asking our server, she definitely upsold us into getting 2 beef noodle soups to share on top of everything else we ordered. Although it was good, 2 was an excessive amount of food for 5 people who ordered 4 other dishes. The mapo tofu is Taiwanese style so please don't expect Sichuan flavors. The spicy wontons also had a distinct flavor to them that was different from any other spicy wonton I'd have. It was an additional herb they added to their sauce that threw off the taste for me. The XLBs were on the doughy side. The worst dish we had was the beef rolls. It was both bland and salty. Biting into it tasted mostly like salty lettuce. The only good part about the roll was the scallion pancake wrap. Because authentic Taiwanese is a bit hard to find here in San Diego, I'd actually come back here to try their breakfast because they have offerings that most places don't. read more

The environment was very relaxed and my family tried the XLB along with 3 other entrees. All 3 entrees were delicious but I would have to give their XLB a 3/10. Over the last couple of years, I have just been ordering from Joyee. Decided to check it out in person, and boy, was I surprised. The portions are bigger, and they have more choices in the restaurant than online. I tried the Dan Dan noodles and wasn't a fan. However, I also had eggplant with pepper and century egg. DELICIOUS. I can't even begin to tell you how great it was. They don't make it so hot that it burns your taste buds away. They make it just right. This was our first time to have a meal here. Not from the area so I Yelped places to eat. I pinned point this one from the reviews and I liked the name. Located in a large strip mall area. So plenty of parking if the front row parking is full. There are other places to eat in this shared parking lot. A few people had just left so (2ish on a Sunday) that left the place to ourselves. That doesn't mean they weren't busy. We noticed they were getting a lot of pick-up orders. The place is large, open concept. There are two walls that are floor to ceiling glass windows. Plenty of seating and along the one wall are some booth style seating. I didn't think it was going to be comfy with the seat padding, but it was surprisingly comfortable. Our server was quick to welcome us. We were seated and she was ready to see if we were ready to place our drink order as we browsed the menu. I was quite hungry so I selected 3 items off the menu. -Eggplant w/Szechuan sauce -Char Siew Bun (3pc) -Hot & Sour Soup Hubby ordered the Scallion Pancakes for our appetizer. I had a Milk Tea w/boba to have with my meal. The dishes we ordered did include rice. I would definitely return! I'll order the eggplant dish again and try a new dish! read more

The food comes out pretty quick. The place is well spaced out so you are not back to back with anyone. The place is pretty nice and clean. It is pretty easy to get a waiters attention. I went during dinner time and it was not too busy. The food quality is pretty good. The dumplings are not the best in town but decent. The shu mai is surprisingly good. This place deserves 0 stars! Qualify of food is borderline inedible... The garlic pea shoots are unwashed and have balls of crunchy dirt in every other bite. Straight to the trash! The XLB is inedible. Skin is too thick and undercooked. Filling is soft and slimy, and appears undercooked as well. There is no flavor because all I taste is dough from the undercooked skin. The fact that the XLB is a signature dish here speaks volumes about the quality of food served at this establishment. TRASH! Seafood wonton soup was the only semi-edible dish with a variety of frozen seafood thrown in to the pot. However after eating balls of dirt from the pea shoots I managed to lose all my appetite and couldn't keep eating. At the end of the meal my party decided to pack up the leftover wonton soup (pea shoots and XLB belong in the trash) and the server attempted to overfill the take out bowl instead of splitting it into 2 bowls. Our fault for not insisting we self-bag. Final comment, all the customers who came through during my meal were non-Asian. Take that as you will! read more

I have found my new Chinese cuisine home. The last time I had Chinese food this good I was in China. The hubby and I came in for lunch today. We ordered Ma pot Tofu, Pork Fried Rice, and Pork and Scallion dumplings. Everything was delicious. The fried rice was very flavorful and not a bit oily, like fried rice can be sometimes. The ma po tofu was was spicy and well balanced in flavor. The dumplings were some of the best I've ever eaten. Seriously, I've eaten at Din Tai Fung in La Jolla several times and paid WAY MORE for the same dumplings, and Joyee's blow them out of the water! I will no longer have to pay fancy La Jolla prices for the bao that I love. Our waitress was super friendly and very helpful answering our questions. One word of warning: come HUNGRY, their portions are HUGE! Great food, great service, great price, and generous portions. I will be returning soon and often. read more

Since moving from the Bay Area 2 years ago, I kinda gave up on chinese food here in San diego! We tried a few places and none were impressive. So we weren't expecting much when we had dinner here last night. To our surprise, it was a full house and we had to wait for our table. Only 2 waitresses were working, and they managed to pull it through. I felt sorry for them, they were overwhelmed with takeout orders, too. But they kept their cool. About the food. It's very authentic. We orders xlb, pork and Napa dumplings, combination chow mein and fried snow pea sprouts. I have to say the xlb skin was a bit thick. The prices are more than reasonable foe the portions they give you. Every restaurant I've been to have been very stingy with portions. This is an important factor for us as we need to feed 2 hungry teens. Don't skip this place if u r browsing on yelp. I made the mistake of overlooking Joyee's dumplings. BTW they sell frozen dumplings. We might get some for the kiddos to enjoy after school. read more

My daughter liked this the best out of everything she ordered! - Pork And Shrimp Dumpling: my daughter liked these too. - Pork And Green Onion Buns: I was stuck finishing these and didn't mind - Tofu Bun: We like tofu. We like buns. This offered too much cabbage and other fillers, with little tofu. Pass - Sesame Balls: Can't go wrong ordering these tasty balls with red bean inside I completely enjoyed watching my daughter try so many different items on the menu. She looked forward to slurping soup out of her XLBs and wasn't disappointed. Service was prompt and friendly. And our orders came out quickly. The food was served hot. We've noticed Joyee's Dumpling House many times in Poway.  This day, we were in the mood for dumplings and decided to try it for lunch.  Well ... after perusing the menu, we ordered two dishes to share (that weren't dumplings) for lunch: SMOKE & SALT DUCK (4/5) -- This was a flavorful dish enhanced by tamarind.  As with most Chinese ducks, watch out for the bone fragments.  Less salt would be better.  We had leftovers tovtake home, which I enjoyed on a mixed greens salad. ($18.99) SNOW PEA LEAVES WITH GARLIC (3/5) -- Stir frying snow pea leaves with garlic is a wonderful preparation method, and this dish is flavorful.  I just wish they used less oil -- this would be an improvement, as was eating the greens over the rice that came with the duck.  ($14.99) The table service sitting inside was very good.  I didn't see any outdoor tables. If it was just the food I was reviewing I would give it closer to 4 or 5 stars. I would recommend getting your food to go here and not dine in. It seemed like there were definitely regulars here who were getting good service but not my friend and I our first time coming. It felt like they were ignoring us honestly and we had to ask for things several times. We had to ask for utensils and they just gave us the wooden to go chopsticks instead of the ones all the other people were given. They even seated someone after us and gave them the same chopsticks as everyone else! I know it seems small but it really bothered us. They never filled our waters either but did for the other patrons. The food was very good and I will be trying the one in vista next time and ordering to go. What a gem this place is! The owners are super friendly and make sure youre well taken care of. The food is also very delicious and hits the spot when im craving real chinese food. Garlic green beans - so flavorful! these were so addicting and pairs so well with rice. Its a great veggie dish if you want to try to be healthy. Green onion pancake - crispy outside, nice dense dough inside with that savory green onion flavor throughout. I cant wait to try this with a beef noodle soup next time. Came here for the dumplings, but I'm coming back for everything else. Really only came here for some dumplings but since they had so many other great options on the menu I had to give them a try. I was super impressed! The dumplings were good, but nothing really that special. The cumin lamb was super delicious and flavorful! You can't go wrong with a bowl of rice and their cumin lamb. My kids and I used to go to Joyee all the time when they opened a store inside 99 ranch market. When they closed, my kids were upset until I found out that they still had more stores. It took us a while to come because it's a bit of a drive. But we were down the street from here last weekend and decided to stop by. I wanted to buy everything!! I missed the Chinese donut and warm soy milk. But this location didn't have it. So we got pan-fried buns, which is scrumptious !! My daughter says it's like her childhood all over again. The brown bun has chocolate and nuts, which is so good!! The greens and noodles are always amazing!! My daughter also loves the beef buns. She claimed the leftover beef buns and pan-fried buns. Glad I tired it! The combination chow Meimban was excellent! Not too salty, great flavor, finally a good asian noodle dish. Would eat this again without a thought! The pork and Napa cabbage dumplings were okay but not nearly as good as the noodles, kind of a strange after taste. Need to try some other dumplings and buns. Giving this place four stars for the food. The customer service, however, was not the greatest. While the food came out timely, it was challenging to get the staff's attention; often had to get up to request for anything, including the bill. We weren't even asked or provided water refills. And, when we finally got the bill after asking, the staff messed up with processing the payment, had to issue refunds, and charge our cards again. A young man came to the cash register to do something and didn't say a word to me. He went in/out of the kitchen area several times and didn't say anything. We ordered the Xiao Long bao (soup dumplings), pork and chive dumplings, pork and shrimp shumai, wontons in spicy sauce, sea food wonton soup, cucumber and garlic salad, cumin lamb & Mongolian beef. Of all the dishes, the Xiao Long Bao, cumin lamb and the Mongolian beef were the favorites across the table, while the cucumber and garlic salad was refreshing. The portions of the soup are large, and we had enough for 5 people in one portion. Although the place is named for its dumplings the shumai and the dumplings had a bit of a thick covering and were just about okay. Service was quick and attentive and when the lady realized that it was a birthday for one of us, she gave the person a free birthday drink! We love coming to the Poway location & the same ladies usually remember us. We like to order way too much food & we really enjoy coming to this location for those specific ladies. SOLID DUMPLING PLACE! My wife when I were craving some dumplings and happened to find this place close to our house. Inside the restaurant is nicely decorated and inviting. Staff was very friendly and very helpful when trying to decide what to eat. The menu is well organized and I appreciated that. The salt and pepper wings were great I loved the egg and sausage fried rice. It's a huge portion. We had like two lunches for leftovers haha The Xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) was a hit. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was the bbq pork steamed bun. That's really what I went there for... and the flavor of the pork was tasteless. Not sure how you can swing and miss at something so easy. The lady taking care of the front was unbelievable- taking orders, checking on everything, helping with leftovers, cleaning tables- not sure how one person could be so good. I had a very disappointing experience at this dumpling house. The food was decent, but the customer service was shockingly rude. When I went to order something for takeout (I already ate and TIPPED in house), the staff actually brought out a calculator in front of other customers to pressure me into tipping. It was awkward and unprofessional. Tipping for takeout should be optional, not forced. The whole interaction left a bad taste in my mouth, and I won't be returning.
