Stopped by Chowking the other morning and ordered their Bangusilog and it really hit the spot. The bangus was crispy and flavorful, and the garlic fried rice was just the right amount, not too much, but enough to go with everything. The egg was cooked over-medium just the way I like it. What really brought it together though was dipping the bangus in the spiced vinegar. It adds that extra savory kick that makes every bite better. Simple breakfast, but super satisfying. Definitely something I'd order again when I'm craving a good Filipino breakfast. Staff was friendly and had no issue with waiting (then again there were not many customers inside). read more

They have things like sio bao, wonton noodle soup with beef, beef and broccoli bowl. The menu is small, but why 2 stars? We ordered a wonton noodle soup and 1 balo balo. It came out approximately 18-20 minutes and I was passed up by 3 order numbers with number larger than mine. The staff did give us an extra balo balo due to the long wait. This location has the worst customer service. Filipino workers here are rude and disrespectful. Came in today to get the 2 entree breakfast. on the board it states 2 entree add $1.50 bangus. It was not very clear to me how it works so I asked. They were 2 people upfront. I believe the one short lady was the manager who made me wait 10 minutes without saying anything before taking my order and then the other one went to the other cashier and asked what i wanted. So I asked what does it mean add $1.50 for bangus? and none of them can answer the question. I simply wanted to know what the sign on the board meant. How can a manager and a person that works there doesn't know what you're selling and what your menu meant? It is standard to know and explain to the customer when they asked. They were so disrespectful when they speak to me and gave me all the side eyes they can. You both work in customer service at least be nice if you both actually didn't know what you're selling and what it meant or how to explain it to the customer. I am reporting this to their corporate. There is a big difference with not knowing and at least being nice of having a good customer service. Food are expensive and very small portions. This location has to close because they are hiring the wrong Filipinos. Filipinos are know for being nice and hospitable. I chose to bring them to CHOWKING this time since their fried chicken was good and bigger there. When we came there's good enough seating inside. I ordered the special they have which is the: *2 of BUNDLE FEAST - CHICKEN and PANCIT That's a Total of 20 FRIED CHICKENS and 2 orders of PANCIT. The young lady on the front said it would be a 20 Minutes wait, and I said that's alright. Then after I ordered I heard her say to the next customer that it would be a 40 minutes wait. So after 20 mins passed, our Fried Chicken was not served yet. It was served after 1 hour and 20 minutes, I don't know what happened and why it took that long, or maybe they just have so many orders for the day. So for the FOOD, the PANCIT is just alright, but their FRIED CHICKEN was DELICIOUS! CRISPY on the outside and juicy inside, it was cooked nicely as always. The PLACE is also Clean. Food: Tocino should be served in tinier pieces since they do not have plastic knives to cut the meats that are TOO big to fit into one's mouth and too tough to bite with one's teeth. Service: Denise is very professional, polite and attentive. She gave the proper greeting, "Hello mam, for here or to go?" Arlyn, the older lady on the other hand, looks like she hates her job. After not acknowledging my presence and making me wait a few minutes, she turns to her busy subordinates and tells them "tell Denise there's a customer", referring to me as persona non grata. Eventually, she says "never mind I'll do it" to which she turns to me and sternly said "YES?!" This lady could learn more from the younger workers. Obviously this supervisor type does NOT lead by example. Ambiance. Supervisor's negative attitude kills the ambiance. As a Filipino-American who's been to several Filipino food spots, I'd categorize this as niche-Filipino-fast-food. I personally would only go here for the lumpia, siopao, Taho, halo-halo, and palabok - in fact, those would probably be the only things I'd recommend here, in spite of the other over-priced items on the menu. Tip: If you get catering from here (like the egg rolls/lumpia we ordered for my son's birthday), triple check that they got the order and are working on it ahead of time. We ordered ahead of time, and was told they didn't have an order when we went to pick it up - frustrating to say the least. Fortunately, they said they'd work on it, and my brother-in-law was going to pick up while we setup our party. When my bro went to pickup, they threw the tray of egg rolls on the counter with attitude...as if we were the ones who made the mistake. As I write this, I remember how pissed off I was at how the situation turned out. Therefore, I'd recommend going elsewhere for Filipino food....unless you're willing to risk getting rude service and are craving for any of the things I'd recommend getting here. read more

Located right next to Seafood City so it's easy to stop by here for a quick meal after grocery shopping. I got one of their combo meals to go. I think I still prefer the Chinese fast food at Panda Express, and while I wasn't wowed, I don't think the food was necessarily bad either. Seems like most of the negative reviews are regarding the service. I didn't have any issues personally, although I also came during an off hour where they weren't busy at all. The price of the siopao has gone up since the last time I've been here. 6pieces is $19.99 But, it's the only place we get it when visiting San Diego to take back home. They also have frozen bags, if you want to make it for a later time. I like getting the Asado (meat) and they have the bola-bola (chicken). I don't recommend the Taho, it was watered down. It wasn't busy at all when we came during the weekend around 1pm. There was one person in front of me but still got my order in less than 5 mins. Based on service only. When stationed here along time ago I went to a bunch of Chowkings. It's just the non burger fast food fix I got every now and then. But this trip I didn't order food. I was getting the frozen mini asado siopao. These are a dozen frozen pork buns in a bag that you can put in your carryon that you bring home so people will stop complaining. It would have been zero star but I gave 1 star for rewarding attempt to rectify situation. When we ordered we were told the siomai would take a few minutes so we waited at our table. We ordered beef noodles, chicken mami, siomai, and siopao. We noticed 4 groups come in, order, and get their food ahead of us. So we decided to follow up and check. When you serve soup, you must do a stock, bone broth, so there's flavor. My beef soup was sad and tasteless. It tasted like water. There were 3 small chunks of beef, some cabbage, a lot of soup since my husband ordered a large and 1 clump of noodles. Because they were in a hurry, they just grabbed a ball of noodles from packaging and poured hot soup on it? Aren't you supposed to dunk it in water first to separate the noodles before adding soup? Honestly, how does this business stay open? Nothing tastes good and it's not cheap. The beef noodle was $17. I should have eaten at Pho Ban Mai in the same center. It's cheaper and delicious. I just wanted to try this restaurant because I have never eaten here before and I was shopping at seafood city. The JFC now owns Chowking establishments prominently positioned in the U.S. As dubbed, the king of the chow is scattered all throughout the SoCal area. Chowking primarily sells noodle soups, dim sum and rice bowls with toppings. I have been at this particular location in Mira Mesa a few times from years ago and once again visited this past month after grocery shopping at their adjoined neighbor, Seafood City Supermarket. Chowking and among other food chains dispersed nearby are situated in the Mesa Shopping Center, at which it can be very difficult to find parking any time during the week and more so on the weekends. At the time of the visit, I ordered their 1-entrée Lauriat Rice Meal on the menu that came with a plate of fried rice, 2-pcs. of fried chicken (leg & small thigh) and pancit canton (egg noodles).
