Nice little fresh fish corner to satisfy your sushi craving without breaking the bank. Good and quick amiable service. Cozy and clean interior with cute deco. Rolls are creative, fish is fresh, portion is generous and cost is relatively low. We ordered garlic edamame, lemon cilantro roll, yuzu yellowtail roll. Really like the controlled sour taste of lemon. The shrimp tempura in the Yuzu Yellowtail roll can be a little bit more crunchy. Green tobiko added a surprisingly popping touch to the roll. Not over the top but checked all the boxes. Recommended.

My go-to sushi spot in SD! My friend and I have been going here for years and are happy to continue supporting this local business. Our favorites are the amber roll, lemon cilantro roll, and white truffle fries. Affordable, consistent, fresh, friendly staff, & quick service. Love how they play studio ghibli on their TV screens :-) Great for special occasions or a casual meal. A hidden gem for sure & highly recommend!!!

Their chef is sick :( Hope he can go back into remission soon

I like big ROLLS and I cannot lie. This place does not skimp on the food. I ordered 2 specials and eel sashimi and it was a meal for 4 people. Very generous portions. Definitely not a cheap meal but it's a good amount of food. I liked the blood orange yellowtail roll. Very creative and loved the fresh and salty taste. The spicy tuna crispy rice wasn't my favorite but I think it was creative. It was like a deconstructed roll but I felt a bit too much with the sauce. The blood orange roll was nice and balanced with the slice of orange on the yellowtail. And highly recommend the eel sashimi. Very well done. Really fast service and again, generous portions of everything. Great waitress. Small parking lot out front. And the restaurant isn't large itself but great solo or with another person.

For a casual sushi meal, this is probably my favorite place in North San Diego. Find myself coming here whenever I crave sushi. They have great prices and they have rolls here that I haven't been able to replicate elsewhere. Always order the flaming hey Lee and yuzu yellowtail along with a new third roll every time I come. I find those two to compliment each other and the third roll is always good no matter what I get. This time I tried the Ted's truffle which was also great.

Great neighborhood sushi spot, located in the same lot as 7-11 and Dominos. Service is always friendly here and they have screens playing anime and old Asian movies. Seating can be limited inside but they also have several outdoor seating tables. Happy is from 3-6 but only consists of drink specials. ($5 beers and hot sake). Wish they had some sushi specials :p Their fish always tastes fresh and of good quality, decent pricing too. I always order the ninjette roll-my go to.

Continues to be our go to for great sushi! Any new appetizer/roll we've tried hasn't disappointed us so our list of favs simply keeps growing longer. Huge fans.

Still as great as when it opened. We really love the quality of the food. The service is always fast and very friendly. The restaurant is small and inside can get full quick so always plan to sit outside. We will continue to eat here, we really love it.

Such an underrated "hole in the wall" type of place. I'm lucky i live down the street and can indulge in this delicious sushi place so often! Tastes GREAT, service is great, and prices are soo fair and unbeatable for Carmel Valley area. Very very happy to live down the street from this gem!

Outdoor seating is available, and that's where we settled in to enjoy our lunch in the sunshine. The ambiance outside was pleasant and nicely shaded. The staff was friendly and attentive, checking on us several times to make sure everything was going well. The teasers were a great way to kick off our appetite. The sashimi was fresh and beautifully prepared. Their specials--the spicy tuna crispy rice and jalapeño lime roll were tasty. Although I wish the crispy rice pieces (4 in total) had been smaller. They were so filling that I didn't have room to fully enjoy more rolls or dessert. Overall, the food was solid, but nothing truly stood out for me.

My go to spot for sushi. Staff are always so friendly and although this place is known for their sushi rolls, their katsu is exceptional. After trying a bunch of dishes each time I go, my favorites have to be: Ted's Truffle Blood Orange Roll Dr Young J Roll Their sashimi is also yummy, but I think Sushi Exchange's rolls are what really makes them stand out from all other sushi restaurants.

Sushi Exchange is hands down my all-time favorite sushi spot! I find myself coming back at least every two weeks because it never disappoints. Every time I have friends in town, this is where I take them. Their Yuzu Yellowtail is absolutely incredible, fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with a wasabi mayo on top. I also love the Chef's Choice Nigiri, which always feels like a special treat with the quality and variety they serve. I always do the chopped wasabi to pair with my nigiri. The Lemon Cilantro is also very good as well as the Flaming Haley. The prices are very affordable for the quality you get, and the service is consistently amazing. My servers Maylinh and Sally were very welcoming and sweet. Everyone is very friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Whether you're a sushi lover or just looking for a go-to spot that feels both high-quality and affordable, Sushi Exchange is the place. Highly recommend!

Affordable sushi that's great quality! There is sometimes a wait, but it's well worth it! They offer a yummy variety of cut rolls so there's always something for everyone. The restaurant is fairly small, but they do offer outdoor seating, so plan your visit accordingly. It's awesome that they constantly have anime playing on their TVs and the staff are friendly.

Ordered a chef's choice nigiri for takeout. The food was pretty solid and they did not skimp on the fish - very solid fish to rice ratio. Bonus points for nice presentation!

The ambience is posh and decadent, perfect for a fancy date night, but each time we came with friends, so we can try as many of the delicious dishes as possible. Definitely recommend family style. The service was impeccable and attentive. I never felt like we needed to flag someone down. They just magically showed up at the perfect time. Someone even brought out a little stool for my purse, which I've never seen outside of the best Michelin starred restaurants. The drinks were well-balanced and inventive, and perfectly matched the food. Apologies for the poor photos of the dishes - I was tipsy ;) The menu is mostly Filipino fusion, with some additional Asian fusion (ie Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean). If you expect traditional flavors and textures, you might be disappointed. Come with an open mind and your taste buds will thank you. The finesse and effort was evident in even the most humble sounding dish. The roasted cabbage was the dish that came to mind. It was at once soft in the center and crispy on the edges, with a flavor punch from the brown butter miso. The cucumber appetizer was such a hit, that we ordered it a second time. The kare kare short rib was fall off the bone tender. As far as creativity, I have never heard of tteokbokki with perilla pesto, but it absolutely works. It was probably my favorite dish of the night, even if it didn't quite match the rest of the dishes we ordered. Some dishes will still hit that nostalgia factor. For me, those dishes were the Wagyu fried rice and the Taiwanese chicken. Were they the best dishes ever? Probably not, but they were tasty and felt like a warm hug. Sometimes cooking with soup is just as important as all the fancy tricks. This time we did not order any of the mouth-watering steaks, because we wanted to try so many of the dishes on the menu. However, the last time I did have steak, and it was divine. They've done the A5 wagyu justice, and it is well worth the money. In short, I highly recommend checking out Animae. I know I for sure will be back!

Here's a Yelp review draft:…read more **** Zen Modern Asian Bistro is a really pretty restaurant and a fantastic addition to the Del Mar Skydeck food scene. Portions are generous, and I loved that they offer such a wide variety of Asian cuisines under one roof, great for groups where everyone's craving something different. That said, if you're looking for a standout in one specific cuisine, you're probably better off at a dedicated spot. Each dish was good, but not great, it's more "solid all-rounder" than "best in class." A few dishes also leaned a little one-note, either too salty or too sweet, so the balance wasn't quite what you'd get from a place specializing in just one style. Still, the price point is fair, the vibe is fun, and it's a great pick for a group night out where everyone wants something different! Finally just a shout out to their Midnight Mahjong nights on Friday! Such a fun idea and a really amazing opportunity to play the game and have a night out with tasty drinks and nibbles! Tbh, not that many fun late night hangs in the Carmel Valley area, so a very welcome addition!

The drumsticks were nowhere near as fresh and delicious as they normally are--they were very tough, dry, and just not enjoyable. What upset me the most, though, was the customer service. When I walked in to pick up my order, the server was closing out at the cashier. Instead of greeting me, she simply looked at me without saying anything. I was the one who had to say "hi," and even then, there was just an awkward stare with no response. I eventually had to say, "I'm here for pickup." That was such an uncomfortable and unwelcoming experience. I actually have interacted with this same server before. During a previous dine-in visit, there was a male employee and her working the floor. The male employee appeared to be doing pretty much everything, while she seemed more interested in being on her phone. Seeing the same lack of attentiveness again this time was very disappointing. I worked as a server myself for over 7 years while I was in school, so I understand that restaurants can get busy and that everyone has off days. But greeting customers and acknowledging them when they walk in is basic customer service. A simple "Hi, how can I help you?" would have made a huge difference. Between the poor food quality this time and the disappointing service, we probably won't be coming back. It's unfortunate because we've enjoyed the food here before, but the experience matters just as much as the food.
