We visited this place recently after many years since our first experience during the pandemic era, the dining area definitely looks really nice and it was comfortable and airy. Food wise, the Bay Ho scallop roll was pretty good but I wasn't too impressed with the textures of the tempura or the execution of the rainbow roll. There were a lot of little scallops that had a nice charred flavor for Bay Ho. The tempura was a but too thick and over fried. The slices of fish in the rainbow roll was falling apart. Otherwise it was an ok experience

Amazing sushi spot in the most random location. Was wanting to go to Nobu but my date took me here and I was shocked how good it was. Presentation was very ig friendly for what he ordered and even tastier.

Always good! We shared the spicy garlic edamame. I had the Toro roll, which was delicious and melt in your mouth with the bluefin tuna. My friend had the fire roll and the Alaskan roll, which I got to try and enjoyed it very much. Great service. Cozy, modern restaurant Clean ambience.

Chef JUN serves high quality sushi and other dishes with a reasonable price. I had several Nigiri sushi, handroll, maki rolls and chirashi and they were all tasty and a good portion. It has good space for dine-in and the interior is neat and moody. It's pretty quiet inside. The staff are friendly and attentive. I think their quality of sushi matches with other top Japanese restaurants in San Diego. Try out this spot if you are craving for sushi and other Japanese dishes.

We love Chef JUN! Such a great experience! We had a stroller with us and the hostess was so nice to make space for us and give us a table in the back room where it was a little quieter. The food is great. We love to come and share a few rolls. The orange and Hawaiian rolls are my favorite. Great date night or meet up with friends spot!

We've been going here for so long and they're so consistently good! Huge shout out to Hannah tonight for making our visit so special! Despite it being a full house, she provided us with amazing service and was just so incredibly kind. We always get the Jun San - it is so much food for such a good price! You're getting cod, uni, toro, oishi and more -- and the quality is always top-tier. Definitely my favorite sushi spot in all of San Diego :)

Quality sushi with an upscale, yet cozy, ambiance! We were so impressed by Chef Jun! If you're shopping for a nice date night spot with amazing presentation and even better tasting eats, this is the place. We opted for the Chef Choice Sashimi and the Solo Kaidan. The sashimi selection was solid with a good variety and generous cuts. No complaints here! The Solo Kaidan, though, was the star. Heads definitely turned when they brought this out- the presentation was top notch! It featured assorted sushi, sashimi all in one plate for one. There's also an option for two (the Sushi Kaidan for two), but we were plenty stuffed with just the solo option. So many fancy combos and new fish to try. You're definitely in for a treat with this dish!

What an absolute powerhouse in the San Diego Sushi scene! We came here for a date night and the service was impeccable, the recommendations were spot on. Their Omakase style menu was incredible and very affordable for what you get.

We made reservations which I would highly recommend. We brought are own bottle of white wine for dinner which only cost us a corkage fee of $15. Very reasonable considering other restaurants in the area. My husband ordered the Jun San and I had the six piece sashimi with sunrise roll. All the fish was delicious and very fresh! Will be back for sure!!

Best sushi in San Diego! Everything is 10/10, if you've ever been there, you know. if you haven't, you must. I love this place, great service, amazing food, everything is fresh. Easy 5-stars.

We came back for more delicious sushi when we visited San Diego last week. I like the fact that I don't have to make a reservation a month in advance like some other places or stand in line outside so I can get a table. Service is always good, too! (thanks, Aiden!)

This was highly recommended by people I follow on social medias. Decided to splurge for my son's birthday. It was tucked in a neighborhood mall where there's a liquor store there. Took us a while driving through a residential area to get here. Inside was warm and cozy with modern designs, and dimly lit. Onto the food, wished they offered more variety of sushi rolls. Most of the rolls consisted of spicy fish. Prices are comparable to other sushi places in SD, the freshness of the fishes could better. Service was good, there were a lot of servers but only one could take your order and check out. We most likely will be checking out other sushi restaurants in SD.

Cheap tuna that is falling apart.

Super disappointing experience. Fish was sub par and quality was way off. This was a delivery experience. Going on my no go list.

This is one of the OG sushi spots in San Diego, and I've been coming here on and off for decades…read more It had been quite a few years since my last visit, though. With so many new sushi restaurants opening around town, it's a little out of the way for us, and honestly, I had almost forgotten about it. I'm so glad we decided to come back because it's every bit as good as I remembered. I made a reservation for the sushi bar, which is always my favorite place to sit at a traditional sushi restaurant. Instead of ordering my usual rolls, I decided to splurge on the Chef's Choice nigiri. I also asked the chef to serve each piece one at a time rather than bringing everything out at once. I love taking my time, enjoying each bite, and watching the chefs work, which is another reason I prefer sitting at the counter. The Chef's Choice was absolutely worth it. Every piece was incredibly fresh and beautifully prepared. My favorite was the aged toro, which had been aged for three months. It had such a rich, buttery flavor and completely melted in my mouth. My husband ordered a few specialty rolls, and he was very happy with both the quality and the generous portions. I also upgraded my regular miso soup to the clam miso soup, and I'm so glad I did. The broth was delicate and flavorful without being overly salty, and the clams added a wonderful sweetness. Even though I was already pretty full, I couldn't resist ordering three pieces of tempura after seeing them come out for another customer. I rarely order tempura in the U.S. because it's often heavily battered, when authentic Japanese tempura should be light, crisp, and delicate. If you've ever been to a dedicated tempura restaurant in Japan, you know exactly what I mean. This tempura was surprisingly close to what you'd find in Japan--light, airy, and perfectly crispy without feeling greasy. For dessert, we shared the green tea Basque cheesecake. It leaned a little on the dry side, but I still really enjoyed it because the matcha flavor was rich, bold, and not overly sweet. We also had a chance to chat with Akira-san behind the sushi bar, which made the evening even more enjoyable. The hospitality and attention to detail really reminded me why I've always loved this place. With so many trendy and expensive sushi restaurants in San Diego these days, this restaurant continues to stand the test of time. The quality of the fish is outstanding, the atmosphere is authentic, and I honestly think the prices are very reasonable for what you get. It's a classic for a reason, and I'll definitely be making the drive back more often.

Definitely a restaurant I would return for some good Japanese food. O Toro and Yellowtail Belly sushi were simply mouth watering. The way both fish just melts in your mouth and the proportion of rice to fish being just right makes a difference so that it gives you the perfect sushi experience. Shrimp Tempura was tasty. Not overly oily and a nice layer of tempura that wasn't thick. But the best is the shrimp! Definitely didn't taste like those frozen ones and the quality of the shrimp (size, texture, and tasty) was delicious. My son ate 2 out of 3 on his own - and he's very picky with shrimp tempura. Ota B was yummy! It was such a balanced meal of flavor, texture and variety. Even the rice itself was good, I kid you not! Definitely a good value to have if you're there. Our kids didn't want anything else but ended up eating two bowls of just udon. All because it was good udon. What can improve (hence the -1 star) is the service. The server wasn't friendly to begin with, probably because we have two young kids in a nice Japanese restaurant, and perhaps because we didn't order too much since we had a delayed lunch but had this place reserved for dinner already.

This is meant to be opinionated criticism to help improve but I think the dishes could use more diversity and depth. Having done a fair share of omakase from places like Kinme and Matoi, I feel like this isn't that much more memorable or special and I'd hate for it to follow the same path Tadokoro did where they were absolutely my #1 choice and fell after they got their star (which they later lost). There was no wait here but parking was a nightmare and there is almost no street parking right around the restaurant which is near the trolley tracks. I recalled coming here for a light dinner with my husband many years ago and thinking it was good, but expensive. I asked if they had Japanese soda for my daughter because it was not on the menu, and they said no, but after we came back from the bathroom the host had found one for us. They gave us chopstick helpers and were very nice. We ordered braised pork belly as an app and wagyu nigiri, albacore, hamachi, salmon belly, 2 salmons, and unagi. I think that was all. They nicely split the order so half had no wasabi for the kid. They were very considerate and I appreciated it. The food however took a while to come out. The braised pork belly was ok, but the fat had not rendered as well as at some other places so we ate around it. The flavor was good though. The hamachi was probably the best item-tender and tasty. The albacore was standard and a generous piece, but the salmon was a bit tough and my kid who usually inhales salmon tasted and then left the salmon. The wagyu had good flavor but was surprisingly chewy. For $26 I would expect it to melt in your mouth but it was not easy to bite through. The eel was very tender but had a weird taste, and was disappointing. I found myself chewing on a scale from maybe the salmon and was overall underwhelmed by the food. The bill for a soda and the sushi came to almost $150 after tax and tip for me and a 6-year old. Usually my husband and I and my kid go to places with better quality and pay the same price for the three of us. Will not be back.

Staff were exceptionally warm and friendly, making us feel like regulars. Being a nigiri guy, I'm particular about my sushi, but theirs was solid. The fish was fresh, cut to perfection, and tasted incredible. My wife ordered a few of their specialty rolls. I'm normally not a roll guy, but I ended up stealing bites because they just hit. I believe he was the head chef, but Anthony, was super cool, personable, and talented. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in his craft, and it really shows on the plate. If you are looking for a solid sushi joint, a great neighborhood vibe, and stellar hospitality, you have to check this place out!

Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

The…read morerestaurant has a modern rooftop vibe in the heart of Downtown San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, making it a great spot for date night. We ordered the miso soup, spicy edamame, Den Miso pork belly skewers, tamarindo tuna ceviche, seabass serrano, crispy karikari tuna, and mochi ice cream for dessert. To drink, we had the Taiyo Margarita and the Clouds of Matcha cocktail. The spicy edamame was probably the only dish that fell a little short for us. It wasn't bad by any means, but we were hoping for more flavor. The absolute standout was the Den Miso pork belly skewers. My husband and I both took our first bite at the same time, looked at each other, and immediately said, "Oh!" We were genuinely surprised by how juicy, tender, and flavorful they were. There were only two skewers, but they packed so much flavor that we instantly wanted to order another plate. The tamarindo tuna ceviche was fresh, light, and refreshing. The taro chips added a nice crunch without overpowering the dish. The seabass serrano was enjoyable, though it wasn't a stand out for us. The crispy karikari tuna (spicy tuna over crispy rice) is one of my go-to orders whenever I visit a sushi restaurant, and this version was up to par. The only component I wasn't crazy about was the long, thin slice of avocado on top--I personally could have done without it, though my husband actually liked it, so that's just a matter of preference. We finished the meal with mochi ice cream, which was the perfect sweet ending. Overall, we had a great dining experience. Between the rooftop ambiance, attentive service, and several delicious dishes - especially those unforgettable pork belly skewers - we'd definitely come back and would happily recommend it to anyone looking for a great dinner spot in the Gaslamp.

We knew it was popular and it was recommended to make reservations well in advance which we did. When you get to the hostess stand on ground level, she greeted us warmly and directed us to the elevator that would take us to Lumi. Once at the top, you're greeted by the Lumi staff to check you in. As you get to view the roof top, there are lots of tables, a strategically placed bar, some fireplace tables, comfortable seating, a live DJ, and beautifully done murals and deco. Very tasteful! The food was amazing and so fresh! If you don't like sushi, Lumi has a lot of dishes that would also accommodate your palette. Appetizers, sushi, and drinks were all great. Prices is a little high but keep in mind that you're also paying for the experience! The staff were all friendly and our host Becky was so sweet and attentive! She checked in on us regularly and gave us great recs! Highly recommend!

Don't miss out on Happy Hour as they have some pretty good deals on nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls, appetizers, sake and mini bowls. All the fish we had were fresh and everything was prepared nicely. They do not skimp on presentation here. Nigiri fish to rice ratio was perfect. We also got the Mixed Veggie and Shrimp Tempura, Soft Shell Crab Hand Roll and Salmon Skin Hand Roll but was not able to take a photo. They were all very good as well. It was probably the best salmon skin hand roll I've ever had and it was only $5 because of Happy Hour. We will be back for the sunday Omakase soon!

We ordered: -Deluxe sashimi mix: This was my absolute favorite item that we ordered. Every piece truly felt premium. It included tuna, salmon, albacore, and yellowtail, all of which were fresh and delicious. My favorites were the chef's choice pieces which made the upgrade worth it. The fresh wasabi paired perfectly with every bite. -Bara chirashi: This was hands down the most beautifully presented dish. I loved the balance between the sashimi and rice, so every bite had a great ratio of both. -Sashimi mix: This was also very good, but I'd recommend spending a little extra for the deluxe sashimi mix. The chef's choice selections really set it apart and justify the higher price. -Soft shell crab hand roll and eel hand roll: Unfortunately, these didn't hold up as well for takeout. I'm sure they'd be much better when enjoyed fresh at the restaurant. -Mixed shrimp and veggie tempura: Some of the pieces could have been cooked a bit longer. Overall, Ju-ichi really shines when it comes to its raw fish. The quality and freshness of the sashimi stood out, especially in the deluxe sashimi mix!
