The Sapporo vegetarian ramen was delicious here, they also had a vegan options too. The veg Italian broth was very creamy and the portion was a good size plus they had a good amount of toppings too. The noodles were the perfect texture as well, not too firm not too soft, had a bit of a chewiness to it. I was also excited to see that they had a gluten free noodle option! The service was great, the staff was friendly and the ramen came out fast. I wouldn't say this place was anything too special but it is still a pretty good ramen spot.

Spicy Miso Ramen(Kazann) & Black Mayu Tonkotsu

Came in and was greeted right away then directed to sit at any table we would like. There was only 1 server but she handled her crowd well. When we arrived there was only a couple other tables occupied but as the evening got a little later most of the tables were taken. Spacious, casual, family friendly restaurant. We got our usual Spicy Miso Ramen but this time you could adjust the spice level. Extra spicy was perfect. Not sure if I could handle their ghost level. They also recommended the wider thick noodles which we really enjoyed since the texture is chewy and stayed al dente. Broth is flavorful but I thought it was a bit more salty this time. My daughter said it tasted fine to her.

Wife loves coming here for their curry, and it never disappoints. Daughter always orders their tonkatsu ramen with yellow chewy noodles. I normally get the black mayo ramen, but this time around I decided to get the squid karage curry and that was delicious as well. The one thing that always brings us back is the excellent customer service from our waitress. She is usually the only one taking everyone's order, but still manages to be so personable and polite. This time around she kept refilling our tea with hot water just so it didn't get cold from the AC. One thing especially I like it here is that she doesn't allow you to pack your leftovers, but she does it herself ,just so its perfectly placed in your To-Go container. That extra added touch of customer service is why we are regulars here. When you do the small stuff to take care of your customers, it goes a long way with us.

Short rib appetizer

I remember back when they built Mira Mesa Mall there was a Radio Shack here.  I looked forward to visiting once a month for my free battery.  Now Isshido Ramen is here. Short rib steak ramen with thin noodles.  Broth had a nice flavor.  Noodles had a snap and a mild flavor.  Loved how the tender steak was marinated.  Very good tasting dish. Chicken pot stickers were crispy on one side and soft on the other.  Chicken filling was nicely marinated.  Very good tasting dish. Pork deep fried gyoza was very crunchy.  Would have been perfect with a minute or 2 less cooking time as parts were cooked more than I like as the flavor was close to burnt.  Pork filling was delicious. Short rib appetizer was thin strips of beef.  Looked like a beef and broccoli dish without the broccoli.  Loved the kalbi like flavor.  Beef was very tender and juicy.  High quality beef here.  This is my fav dish so far. Service was fast and friendly.

Black garlic karaage

Isshido ramen is now our go-to ramen shop in San Diego because of their rich tonkatsu broth, seared tender chashu slices, QQ wavy noodles, and generous portions size for a reasonable price. See my prior reviews for more details, as they are still applicable, and I come here basically monthly. I decided to order different ramen today so that my fellow yelpers will know which ramen to choose from in the extensive menu. Although the isshido miso ramen and the isshido truffle ramen were good, they do not compare to the Isshido signature ramen and black mayu ramen. So I think I am going to stick with my favorites and not try any other ones. I am not a fan of cabbage in ramen (like with the miso ramen), and the truffle flavor plus the small mushrooms didn't appeal to me as much as the garlic in the black mayu ramen. I couldn't help but order another black garlic karaage. It really is just a very addicting appetizer. I am always licking the dipping sauce dish at the end. Service is friendly and professional as always. Tons of parking in free lot. This is a great place for a casual outing, date night, or family feast.

Black oil tonkatsu: love how they roast/sear the chasu, gives it an extra smoldering unique taste. However the broth tasted off - sort of watery and oily. Service was great, presentation was well done too and there was no wait. I really wanted to like this place, but I'm pretty sure I got mild food poisoning- about an hour after eating here I had the worst upset stomach ever and had to spend the rest of the evening and night on the good old bathroom. My husband also had a queasy stomach afterwards but not as bad (he had the regular tonkatsu, so perhaps it had something to do with whatever black oil they put in mine).

Chashu bowl $2.99 add on to your ramen during lunch

What a great spot for lunch. The reviews were mid but I decided to give Isshido a try as Menya has been declining in taste and service since their reopening. Everything we had was delicious. The black garlic tonkotsu and miso tonkotsu with the thick noodles were excellent. They were very garlicky, porky, and flavorful. The chashu were nicely charred, although a bit too thin. Made for great leftovers too. The small side of chashu rice bowl was so good! The meat was so smoky and tender. At an additional $2.99 for lunch, it was so worth it. Their fries were also excellently crispy and came out piping hot. Service was very friendly and they were great in providing our toddler with everything he needed to dine without us asking. There never seems to be a wait here but it definitely deserves more hype. Very good all around!

Uni udon and the black garlic karaage
Stephen L.

Came here to try a nearby business for restaurant week. The uni udon was unique but the display wasn't as appealing as the image and the sauce wasn't nearly as creamy as one would expect. The karaage was a little more interesting than expected, but ultimately just felt slightly more elevated than a normal karaage. The ramen was flavorful and solid, but wasn't a standout or unique. Arguably in San Diego, with all the various ramen shops both big and small, I was hoping for something more unique in preparation or content. Overall would try again, but likely driven mostly out of convenience.

Great ramen place without having to wait for long line. Tasty soup and noodle. Big dining hall as well l.

Isshido Signature Paitan
Jennifer D.

First time here with some friends! Decided to get the Isshido Signature Paitan ramen since it was the first ramen item. Ramen was alright, nothing particularly special. I like how the meat was roasted on the sides though! Not something I come across a lot in other ramen places. Got the Chijire (wavy) noodles that the waitress recommended. It's like any other pack of noodles. Broth was not too salty with a hint of flavor, which is cool. I tried a bit of my friend's kaarage which was really fresh and juicy! Her set includes a lot of sides too. Orange was fresh! If I come back, I will definitely try one of the bento options! Service is nice! Food took longer than I thought but there was only one person on the floor. She was extremely nice! I usually care more about the taste of the food, but she definitely made this experience a 4/5 rather than 3/5! Ambiance is on the quieter and peaceful side as we were one of the few tables seated. Definitely a nice place to catch up with friends.

Karaage (6 pcs)

My fiance and I visited this restaurant for our Wednesdate. It wasn't too crowded for dinner! The service was super quick! We got a vegetarian ramen, the signature ramen, and the karaage. The chicken karaage was bland, however the ramen was super flavorful! The vegetarian ramen was just as good as the signature ramen! Overall, it was a really good experience!

Spicy Tan-Tan Ramen
Joyce L.

2nd time around was not as great -- I would stick with the appetizers we ordered last time. Kimchi agedashi tofu was too salty - didn't have the milder flavor of light agedashi soy sauce. Better to just have kimchi and agedashi tofu dishes separately elsewhere. Cucumber salad was also a miss - didn't have the crisp texture of what a cucumber salad should have. It was also warm, not refreshing. Ramen - meh, it was ok. As I mentioned in my prior review of this place, it's hard to compete with all the other solid ramen places around SD. Service was great, though. :)

How did I missed this gem?! The beef tongue is delicious! Love the chard on the meat in the ramen. And boy do the workers hustle here!

About a year ago, some friends want to try the food out here and I was pleasantly surprised to see how much it had improved! So imagine my surprise where I came in this evening and was completely floored with how abysmal it has somehow become again with only the last few months. The service has been insultingly, rude; we had a talk with our server and even pass along a compliment, it was shocked with how unkindly they responded. Every single item of the menu has been absolutely terrible; the sushi was a quarter of the size it usually is and tastes terrible, the edamame is cold and feels like it was scraped off the floor, and the karaage chicken is now covered in a glaze that is making our stomachs absolutely sick. And the food is even more expensive than it was before! I absolutely do not want to pay for any of this and it makes me sick to my stomach to have wasted our time here this evening.

I got the shoyu ramen, chashu rice, and a cold oolong tea. The ramen was fine in texture and al dente. The broth was flavorful, without being oversalted. It is a really cute place, feels authentically Japanese inside, but also authentically small, so I recommend reservations for a larger group: we were a party of 7 on a Saturday evening around 5:30 with no reservation and we had a wait of around 40 minutes. Definitely worth trying at least once.

That said, the waitress we had was very kind and attentive, and the food was decent, so we decided to give the place another try. After a long day at Legoland, we returned around 6pm and I had called ahead to make a reservation for four. The person on the phone took my name and number, so I assumed we were all set. When we arrived, the restaurant wasn't even full, but no one greeted us for several minutes. Eventually, a waiter came over, and when I mentioned our reservation, he seemed confused and said they don't take reservations for parties under six. I tried to explain that someone had taken my information over the phone, but he interrupted me multiple times and didn't let me finish. He then walked over to another group behind us and asked if they were there first, even though we had arrived before them, which was frustrating. We were eventually told there was space available at the bar seating (bar stools) instead of a table. At that point, we were tired and hungry, so we accepted. Unfortunately, the service didn't improve. The waiter seemed rushed and disorganized--he couldn't remember our order and had to ask us which dish belonged to who when the food came out. As for the food, it was okay but not memorable. My ramen was just average--the pork was dry and the egg was overcooked. Overall, the food is decent, but the service really needs improvement. This particular waiter clearly needs more training, or possibly a different role, as the level of service did not meet basic expectations for a restaurant. Our second visit left a bad impression, especially since it was our last night in San Diego. Sadly, we won't be coming back.

Some restaurants become part of your travel memories & Underbelly is absolutely one of those places…read morefor us. When we visited San Diego back in 2016, we ate at Underbelly twice because it was just that good. Returning this trip felt a little like revisiting an old friend. And I'm happy to report... it was every bit as awesome as we remembered! The best part? The staff affectionately called us "O.G.'s" when they heard we had been longtime fans, which immediately made us feel welcome & set the tone for a fun dining experience. We started with the kimchi because some traditions simply should not be broken. Tangy, punchy, spicy & full of flavor, it was the perfect opening act before the ramen arrived. I opted for the Tonkotsu Ramen: rich tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg & chashu pork. The broth was deeply savory & comforting, the pork tender & flavorful, that perfectly soft egg tied everything together beautifully. It was exactly what ramen dreams are made of. Hubby went with the Underbelly Ramen, extra spicy: tonkotsu broth, soft boiled egg, chashu belly & adobo pulled pork. The extra spice brought serious heat & he was thrilled with every fiery bite! There is something incredibly satisfying about returning to a restaurant years later & finding that the magic is still there. Underbelly delivered the same bold flavors, cozy ramen comfort & cool Little Italy energy that made us fall in love with it the first time around. Not every restaurant earns a repeat visit nearly a decade later & even fewer live up to the memory. Underbelly absolutely did. We will be O.G.'s forever! NOM NOM NOM #YUM
