Hummus w/ sliced tomatoes, Moroccan seasoning, evoo, & salt on Whole Grain Wonder
Lisa K.

Can't believe I haven't already 5-star reviewed Josey Baker Bread. I was out on the SF Double-Cross walk and although this spot is a bit off of the trail, I was willing to add an extra mile to stop by and get a great piece of Josey Baker Bread toast and a Four Barrel Coffee. As always, there was a long line, but I didn't mind because there's obviously a reason for the line. Delicious toast, treats, and coffee. Today I ordered the VII - Hummus with sliced tomatoes, Moroccan seasoning, evoo, and salt on Whole Grain Wonder. YUM! I also picked up the last loaf of Country. I didn't arrive until after 2PM so I was lucky to get a loaf. Staff is always friendly, and they are always busy, but never frazzled. Bathroom is clean. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. New artwork is showcased inside of the walls when you walk in and in the area where you wait for your order. I'm not sure how often the artwork/artists are switched out, but it's always great to see whatever is showcased.

My husband and I decided to get coffee and a quick breakfast before heading to Alamo Park to walk around and take a picture of the Painted Ladies houses. We stumbled across this bakery and were extremely pleased with the outcome. I ordered coffee and a ham and cheese croissant, delicious. My husband ordered hot tea and the number 7 which was toast with hummus, cauliflower and something else (he forgot). He said all ingredients were fresh and it really delicious. If you're coming to Alamo park or to see the Painted Ladies houses, i definitely recommend coming here to pick up a quick bite and bringing it to Alamo park for a quick picnic. You will not be disappointed.

Josey is my favorite bakery for bread of all time. The sourdough is flavorful. The outside is crunchy while the inside was soft and moist. I've never had bread this moist before and the best part is that it keeps moist for a few days. Will definitely be back for more.

The bread. WOW. Seriously, in a city that says it's famous for sour dough, the bread here is a standout. They grind all their own flour in house... blah blah blah. Just go and eat the bread. The loafs are warm and fresh and the croissants would sit right next to a Parisian cousin and you couldn't tell the difference. On top of that, they are a serious coffee house and they make breakfast. This is "my" local place when I come back to SF.

Oatmeal loaf (very moist and wet interior)

Their fresh bread is really hearty and flavorful! We first bought an oatmeal loaf, not realizing that the texture inside is very wet and moist. We sent it back thinking it was undercooked/raw, but they reassured us it is supposed to be that way due to the oats. I wish we were notified somehow (maybe describe texture/appearance on the label) because a perfectly good loaf was wasted :(

If you're looking for the epicenter of the hipster culture it would be here at Josey Baker. This is the cafe made famous for the expensive avocado toast. This place makes bread 12 varieties today. Just go to the shelves and help yourself to a loaf and pay the cashier Beverages can be had here as well. Sit inside the cafe to observe the "scene" or sit outside at the parklet just in front of the entrance. The long table allows more people to sit and sets a community feel to the place. I wish I could have a couple of their chairs for home. Super cute! The front windows look out onto Divisadero Street, that hopping thoroughfare that's blowing up in terms of popularity. If you were here sitting with me, you'd feel the pulse of music down to your soles. Or ignore the scene and concentrate on a book or your mobile phone and tune out. In this neighborhood not dropping into Josey Baker for a look is an opportunity wasted so I say do it if you're nearby. Because when all is said and done the bread here is delicious!

I heard about this place and wanted to give it a try. I arrived at around 5:30 pm only to find a sign saying that pizza is only served from 6-9pm. Bummer! But the garlic knots are served all day so I ordered one of those. The $3 covers only 1 garlic knot with sauce. I also purchased the cranberry and Walnut sourdough bread. The bread loaf tasted ok. There was a good amount of ingredients but it wasn't that sour even though it had a sourdough culture. The garlic knots are pre-made and just toasted when ordered. The marinara sauce was delicious, it wasn't bitter or bland. The garlic knot was just ok. It didn't have much garlic flavor. And they put cold parmesan cheese after they take the garlic knot out of the oven.... So the cheese didn't melt, it just fell off the garlic knot as I was eating. I was feeling thirsty so I walked down the street and grabbed a boba. As I walked past the bakery again, I noticed it was 5:59pm, so I decided to stop in for a side of pizza. There are 2 flavors to choose from, and I decided to get the cheese to really judge the pizza on the simplicity. The pizza was warm and hot out of the oven. It was a bit greasy for my liking. The marinara sauce was again good, and I wish the pizza had more on it. They put salt on the crust to give it more flavor. Honestly I think if there garlic knot had similar flavor to the crust, I would've enjoyed it more. Overall food was ok. Service was a bit slow I would come back to work or read a book as they have plenty of seating. Didn't try any drinks so I can't connect on that.

Country Loaf

I love artisan breads and my friend wanted me to try a loaf of country bread from Josey the Baker. Having never heard of this bakery, I determined that it is a small team of bread bakers who specialize in freshly milled whole grain sourdough. The loaf of country bread had some heft to it, weighing 24 ounces. The wheat bread had a crusty and nutty tasting outside and the inside was chewy, yet soft and fluffy. It is perfect warmed up with some butter on it. So delicious and the love the heartiness of it. With how tasty the country bread was, I will need to drop by the shop and try their other breads. This is high quality artisan bread.

I don't like the vibe of The Mill, but I really like Josey Baker (his real name!) Bread. I happened upon Josey's cookbook at the SF Public Library and was really intrigued. His recipes use bread starter, and I am too lazy for that so I stopped by The Mill to check out the bread loaves for sale on the large rack. His breads are hefty and delicious. If you have your heart set on a particular loaf, you might want to check with the staff because they can sell out. The Mill does a great job highlighting the bread that the talented team works hard to produce. The toast is nicely toasted for the avocado toast. The egg and toast was my favorite. On another note, I noticed that Josey Baker Bread has donated loaves of bread to seniors who receive meals on wheels food and I think that's lovely.

While exploring this neighborhood seeking my yelper reviews..I checked this place out. Nice coffee place with some hearty wholesome grain breads. Especially after a good workout In the nearby Alamo park and after checking out "the Painted ladies". Tried their yummy #4 toast (whole grain) with peanut butter and coffee. Thank you yelpers- nice suggestions - check out this nice cool place Please note - the name of the place it appears is now called "The Mill"...they have small outdoors seating as well.

I will go out of my way for a hearty gluten-free bread (stone age bread). Only down side here is the limited parking but Alamo square park is worth walking from to get here.

I cannot get enough of Josey Baker and his bread!!! His book is fantastic too. I had to buy 2 copies so I could get it signed!!!! I left my first one at home. Comparing his bread to Tartine, Jane the Bakery, Acme and Boudin, Josey's wins out every time!! Love the pepper/parm bread!!

This time, I came prepared and arrived at 10am and mission accomplished! Beef Birria Pain Suisse -- 9/10 This tasted exactly like a birria taco wrapped in buttery puff pastry form. Super flavorful, rich, and flaky. My only minor complaint was that the consommé soaked through the bottom a bit, so it lost some crunch, but the flavor more than made up for it. Baklava Bun -- 8/10 Such an innovative pastry. It had all the warm, nutty, spiced flavors you'd expect from baklava while still feeling like a proper laminated pastry. Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant -- 9/10 Best sweet option of the bunch. The exterior was perfectly flaky and crunchy, while the pistachio cream filling was rich without being overwhelmingly sweet. The cardamom added a really nice aromatic touch. Pork Bun Bearclaw -- 10/10 My favorite item by far. It tasted like a baked char siu bun crossed with a buttery puff pastry. Savory, slightly sweet, and incredibly satisfying. Twice Baked Biscoff Croissant -- 4/10 Unfortunately way too sweet for my liking. If you're a huge Biscoff fan you might enjoy it more, but it was overpowering compared to the balance of the other pastries. Overall, definitely worth the hype. Just make sure to go early unless you want to risk staring at empty pastry trays. The rotating menu keeps you on your toes and already has me wanting to come back to see what they will come up with next.

Even so, they were refreshing that pastry case so that I was not without options. So many amazing-looking things, so I got 3 things just for myself: Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant $5.25: The classic, I had to try. And it was so good!! I thought it might be too rich, but I actually found it to be quite balanced. I loved the fresh mashed banana/banana purée inside, and it went really well with the chocolate. I didn't get a ton of almond flavor comparatively, but I appreciated the coating on the top for a heartier crunch in addition to the croissant flakiness. Like everyone else, I would definitely recommend this one! Passionfruit Bostock $4.25: The staff person helping me told me this was a good option, so I was happy about that. I would agree! It has a beautiful crisp on the outside and a moist crumb inside. The passionfruit flavor was really nice and not too strong. I believe they rotate different flavors of this one, so I'd definitely want to try more. Bostocks on the whole are underrated, and I think they have just the loveliest texture. All-in-One Cake: This is so creative. I was going to stop at the above two pastries, but when the staff person said that this cake was quite literally made up of all the other cakes seen in the case, I was already sold. How cool and creative and reduce-reuse-recycle is that!!!?? I love! And it was such a fun eat! I love how they added crust at the bottom and a gorgeous chocolate layer on top to tie everything together. And every bite was a little different: some fruity, some nutty, some crunchier. Super cool. I was able to nab a table and work a little bit, which was nice. It's a good vibe inside with a little hustle and bustle, but still cozy overall. I'll be back!

Pineapple King is a place I absolutely have a love-hate relationship about. I like how innovation the buns are, but the ordering process - regardless of whether I waited in line or I ordered in advance - has been very disappointing. I placed online orders in May 2021, April 2022, October 2022, June 2023, January 2025, and then today. (Thanks to my email which reminded me of the dates) Every single time I had to wait extra time for my previously placed online order to be ready. After several times of waiting for an extra 10 minutes, I decided to give them extra time to prepare the buns. It simply did NOT work. They always, and I mean always, asked me to wait for 5 more minutes. 5 minutes passed, and the order was still not ready. The average wait time has been 10 minutes in addition to the announced pick-up time. You might want to say, oh, I would like you to receive your buns warm and fresh. Thanks. But if a customer is late, they don't deserve warm and fresh buns. On the contrary, for us who are on time, why do we have to wait for extra time? Please consider adjusting the estimated pick-up time if you are super busy. I understand your store gets busy, and congratulations about that. Please ask your staff to give us a more accurate "extra wait time" because we customers are busy too. Our time is no less valuable than yours. Besides, I understand that you need to check our photo ID during pick-up. Please be consistent with your policy. While I was waiting by the pick-up window, I noticed there were customers who were not asked for their IDs, and they actually picked up their order after a 2-minute wait. Questions can be raised if you only enforce your policy either randomly or only towards several customers. After a few disappointing visits, our family are sad to say that this will be the very last time being your customers. How you run your business just don't align with our values. I do wish you all the best in your business. Thank you for reading my comment.
