First meal in London? Fish & Chips of course!…read more Friendly, efficient service from a one-man shop. There was a slow flow of customers coming in to place orders for take-away. The fish and chips appear to be fried to order. Our food was piping hot and delicious. We had to stand under a tree to eat because it had started raining while we were in the shop. The crust on the fish was the best that we've ever experienced. The Cod was hot and flakey as it should be. An excellent value!

Poppies has four locations, but this one on Hanbury Street by Spitalfields Market is the original. We were able to make an online reservation for six like an hour ahead of a Thursday lunchtime visit. We could've walked in, but the restaurant was fairly busy. The space was great, small and fun with a retro American diner aesthetic. There was a jukebox in one corner and tons of knick-knacks and memorabilia on the walls. We were with my parents and our boys, and the vibe was very easy and kid-friendly. We had a young, friendly server who wanted to talk to us about America, where he hoped to study. He was a bright-eyed sweetie, and he took very good care of us. We drank Poppies Pale Ale, which was on tap and quite refreshing on a hot day. And of course, we had lots of fish and chips. We tried both the haddock and the cod, which cost a dollar more. Our waiter said he personally preferred the haddock, and all of us ended up agreeing, though honestly both were delicious, flaky and flavorful, the batter light and crispy. The chips were great, as was the house tartar sauce. We also got sides of garden peas and sliced gherkins, which were both lovely. My kids had fish bites and fries. If you're looking for a chippy (love that word) on this side of London, I'd highly recommend checking out Poppies. It's a welcoming place with excellent fish and chips, exactly what we wanted for lunch that day.

We got the special of the day the lemon sole. Service was super fast. Since they do high volume the fish was already fried but it was very hot when we ate it. The batter was crispy and light. I'm not sure if Fish! and Fish! Kitchen are the same business, but they are definitely right next…read moreto each other. Fish! has indoor seating with tables, while Fish! Kitchen is more of a takeaway spot. They only have one table with two long wooden benches along the side of the shop. The process is simple: get in line, place your order, wait for your food, then grab it when it's ready. The ambiance is very casual and fast paced, with most people either standing outside to eat or taking their food to go, so it's not really a place to sit down and enjoy a leisurely meal. The shop proudly displays its National Fish & Chip Awards recognition, so we had high expectations. We only ordered the haddock fish and chips. The fish was freshly cooked, but the batter was very plain and lacked seasoning, so the flavor didn't really stand out. The chips (fries) were just okay, nothing particularly memorable. Overall, it wasn't a bad meal, but it didn't quite live up to the award-winning reputation we were expecting. :)

We ordered the cod fish and chips as well as an order of onion rings. The onions were battered in a flaky crust and the onions themselves were quite sweet. Overall an incredible onion ring given the cost, freshness, and quantity you receive. Now, onto the fish. The cod was incredibly flaky and the crust enhanced the flavor really well. The chips were alright, not my favorite, but the cod was the real star of the show. Overall, I was able to have the British fish and chips experience and have it well. If you are looking for a great place to eat that's not too far from the main city, look no further than here!

One of my colleagues told me of a place close by our old office that was good, and I guess it was here since it is the only place close to Frying Pan Alley. When I arrived I saw that it was a "chippy" and smiled since I had never been in one before. I had an hour till closing so did not dawdle. Went whole hog for the large cod and chips with a side of mushy peas - gotta have at least one veg. For dessert I had the Spotted Dick with Custard. Even though they were fairly close to closing the food was hot, fresh and delicious. Good to see real chips and malt vinegar. Again, they don't use vinegar in the US. Ambience was rustic and nothing fancy and also nothing pretentious. Server was a friendly fellow so service was great. Not the cheapest at £29 but worth it, especially since I was eating cheaply for the past 3 suppers. Well recommended - two thumbs up.

It was a very big portion of food for five quid and I would absolutely recommend it for a cheap lunch but I'm not sure if it's the best food in the area. Would go back.

We had read the previous reviews here on Yelp and were so glad we did. We ended up eating here twice. Fell in love with the family that runs it, and glad to have gone. For the fish, we definitely preferred the haddock over the cod. It is a HUGE serving, and we could split one piece between 2-3 people. Not that the cod was bad, it was just to flaky for us. The chips were really good, a big portion and so glad they had the malt vinegar packets for us to take with us. We also had the burgers and chicken sandwich and those were good too, and the price was right. Honestly and without reservation, I wish I lived in the area so I could go to this place every week.
