    Haddock and chips

My friend and I are visiting London from Alabama! We wanted to eat fish & chips and came across happy days. The ambience is warm and cozy, feels like home. On top of this, the staff is incredible. They are very kind and welcoming and eager to help! 10/10 overall experience. So grateful we came here!

Didn't like it... The staff lady was nice. The fish and chips were extreeeemely bland. This was my very first stop after I dropped my bags at my hotel because I read positive reviews. I thought because they have carry out (take away) that it might be authentic. I don't know if it was but I struggled to force feed myself so that I didn't offend the staff but I took probably 3/4 to go (but didn't eat it). How awful to have a giant portion of food you don't want in front of you while a kind staff person waits to hear what you think. It didn't taste bad...it just had no taste. I almost went back to the US thinking poorly of fish and chips but luckily, I went to The Huntsman restaurant in Bath. Their fish and chips was so flavorful. In both restaurants I had haddock. It was night and day. Sorry...but the staff and the memorabilia are about all I found to be happy about at Happy Days.

Dinner here the other night. Was weird, as it seemed barely anyone was inside the place (it was about 8ish on a weeknight), but they were doing a big business with takeaway. Had the large cod and the cod special (with mushy peas). This was great fish - white, flaky, and perfectly crispy. For dessert, we had the sticky toffee pudding with custard. Oh, boy, that was good. Perfectly warm, and sweet. The Jack the Ripper decor was cool too - came by it honestly, as old Jack really did leave his mark there! Great place!

My colleague would kill me if he read this review. This is his favorite chip spot in London. It just isn't my style of chips. It was too breaded and too greasy for me. Each to his own. The service was incredibly friendly. Most people were ordering take out. The space is full of Jack the Ripper history. They believe that the only real shred of evidence tied to Jack the Ripper was found at this location. You can see a copy of the letter and pictures on the all. The space is dingy but somewhat clean. A simple wine, beer, and spirits list.

This place has the best fish and chips in the area. They offer a variety of fish, (sorry) I do not remember all of them, freshly fried served with your choice of mushy peas or chips. I had the standard cod with chips. From what I remember the serving size was huge. The fish was fried to perfection in matzo meal. The matzo meal was very flavorful but not overbearing; I could still savor the seasoned cod. I wanted to stop here before I left but this location is not open on the weekends.

We had just landed in London when we found this amazing Fish and Chips place. Let me tell you, the food was amazing! The wife had the Cod and Chips, and I had the Halibut and chips. The fish is not over fried and the Halibut was nice and flakey. The Cod was moist and fatty and not rubbery like some places we'd tried before. The portion was just perfect for the two of us. The nice Easter egg was the history behind the place. There are pictures and art from the Jack the Ripper times. Ask the staff about the history of the location and you'll be pleasantly surprised! Happy Days is definitely a must go for not only the food but the decor and history! Cheers!

Okay. So you are near London Tower and want to top off your day with "fish and chips," right? Walk north 15 minutes to Happy Days and make yourself VERY HAPPY. Came here on a Friday evening and was seated immediately. Friendly wait staff and simple choices. OUTSTANDING fish and chips. Simple beer and wine list - hey, if you want fancy, you ain't eating fish and chips. And the price was right - 80 £ for 4 adults, a bottle of wine, and two beers. The neighborhood appears to be a bit worn - but totally safe - so spend the time to walk up to this little spot and have a GREAT meal.

I ordered the large cod and it came with a huge portion of chips. I was very full by the end but the fish was very oily and I ended up removing the skin. The location seemed a bit sketch -- we walked through some small streets but it was daylight so it was okay.

When in London…read more... Anytime I visit the UK, one of my must haves is good old fashioned fish and chips. While at my hotel, I searched my trusty Yelp which brought me to Hoxton Fish House. I didn't have to look at the menu at the counter - I simply said "fish and chips" please. I took a seat outside and waited for my delectables to arrive. The time seemed like plank/burpee minutes, but in reality the food came out relatively quick. When I took my first bite / it was mission accomplished. Each bite was all I wanted and more. The fish and chips were fabulous - I ended up unable to finish due to the size of the meal. The atmosphere was pretty laid back and sitting outside was somewhat relaxing. If you're anywhere in the area, I highly recommend this place!

The interior is quaint, very quiet but the staff was friendly. I ordered the tradition Fried Cod with a side of chips. Well, I'm here to tell you that you also get a side of tartar. Order two if you can, it did just the trick to pair along with the fish. The cod was fresh, as well as the chips. Highly recommend that you stop by if you find yourself in the Hoxton neighborhood.

It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, but somehow after a six minute wait they found space for us in the back room. 1950s American music played throughout the place, with posters and records of that time period to boot. I assume it's because they opened in 1952 and they have been trapped in time since. The servers were all really nice and gave us cute knotted bendy straws. So the main event. We got the fish and chips of course. The cod and haddock tasted the same but the only noticeable difference to us was that the haddock had a dark layer of skin under the fried layer. Cook's in Menlo Park, CA was slightly better, but Poppies' was still outstanding. We also had the mushy peas to make sure we had mushy peas while in Britain, but they were nothing to write home about. (I think I'm just not a mushy peas fan.) We all had two obligatory spoonfuls and went back to the fish. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Apparently it arrives frozen from some dessert place. We could have used more than a half scoop of melted vanilla ice cream, but overall it was REALLY good. The daughter loved it and insisted she have sticky toffee pudding for her birthday five months later. We had STP three times in a week during our trip and Poppies was maybe slightly better than the rest. In 2017, 5 stars. A visit to Poppies during our 2024 visit, seven years later was a must. This time we sat outside to be COVID cautious on the only outdoor seating available - three sporting even style wooden chairs that fold in when not occupied. (More recent photos show that they've been replaced by benches.) The fish and chips this time was fine but again not better than Cook's. Yes, California might have the edge over an English chippie. Based on my notes we had all haddock which was a good choice. I noticed this time that the sticky toffee pudding was taken out of the fridge and microwaved but it was still yummy. But overall this visit I'd have to give it 4 stars.

The space is small and packed with vintage decor. It definitely has that old-school, classic London fish-and-chips shop feel. Cozy, a little tight, but full of character. I ordered the cod and chips, which most people agree is what you come here for--and I'd agree. The fish was fresh, the batter was crisp without being greasy, and overall it was solid and satisfying. I also tried the calamari and the sticky toffee pudding. Both were just not for me. Not terrible, pudding definitely ain't aligned with my tongue, but I wouldn't order either again. Service was straightforward and efficient; It's not a place you go for lingering, but more of a sit, eat, and enjoy the experience kind of stop. Overall, it's a good fish and chips spot and worth visiting if you're in the area, especially if you want something classic and reliable. I'll continue stopping by when I'm in London but solely sticking to the cod and chips next time.
