Faced with the grim reality of an expensive hotel breakfast, we set off to find a good breakfast. We could not have done better than finding Jack the Chipper. The wait staff were friendly, thoughtful, and extremely kind. The food was. Generously portioned , beautifully cooked, and fresh. The facility is spotless, including the restrooms. For the same cost as the rubber eggs and cold coffee served at our hotel, we had fresh hot bountiful breakfasts provided by very nice people. Was in the neighborhood for a different activity and stopped by here for some fish and chips. I knew the moment I walked in that it was definitely a tourist spot due to the decor but was starving so I gave it a go. I ordered the cod and chips while my friend got the sausage and chips with curry sauce. The meals came in massive portions and presented nicely with the curry sauce in a huge dish which my local friend said is not usually the case. After adding tons of salt and vinegar, I tried my dish and was disappointed. The fish was tender but super bland and greasy while the chips were dry and felt like they were left out for a while. The tartar sauce was strangely sweet and so was the ketchup. My friend said her dish was also subpar with the same issue with her chips where it was super dry and stale. Okay, this review is going to be a bit of a mixed bag. Wasn't going to post it, but I was looking through pics from my trip, and that memory hit hard. So, here we go... The food? Excellent. Service from waitstaff? Friendly, expedient and knowledgeable. Decor? Clean, vibrant and jovial... ..here is where it goes bad: the Manager is an arsehole. Openly, and unabashedly. When you and your business "associate" decided to arrive from downstairs, you then very openly and aggressively barked orders at waitstaff to realign tables and chairs whilst diners are sitting for meals. Don't do that: first point. Second point: when a waitress checks with you about cleaning cloths to be used to clean tables, don't belittle her and say "No, use your apron" like you're speaking down to a child. The look of humiliation and defeat on her face almost had me snap, and unload on you for being a prick. I fucking loathe bullies. Instead? I decided telling her she was doing a good job and telling her "Ignore that guy, he's a dick.." at least put a sad smile on her face. I've seen that type of smile before - it's on someone that regularly gets bullied: that changes post review: I MEAN IT. Now after doing that, and then toadying up to me and commenting that staff are "like family" you made me feel repulsed. (You lost stars for that..). This is where it changes slightly again. To your credit? When an older chap (an ex butler, can't remember his name, but talked about his daughter a great deal) had trouble with his credit card, you covered his debt. Very much in earshot- but still. So what is apparent is you're not entirely without compassion - that was very kind and I do respect that. But it does not excuse the rest of your attitude or deportment. Going forward (and this is someone who's ex-Military and an ex-Chef), DON'T belittle waitstaff - I never did, so you don't either. First off: this is a tourist trap. You have been warned. Second off: the decor on the walls doesn't have much to do with Jack the Ripper. Disappointing, considering a. the name of the restaurant and b. the location. I ordered the prawn cocktail starter, large cod and chips and side of mushy peas (out of the haddock; ok, admittedly it was 945pm). The prawn cocktail was mostly shredded lettuce with a few prawns perched on top buried in an ocean of cocktail sauce. A bit deceptively presented. Now onto the cod: flaccid at best with a micro-thin coating of something approaching batter, but is unlikely to ever graduate from Batter School with full honours. Not good. The chips were not all that fresh but passable. The mushy peas were decent (and a huge portion of them) The service was good, thankfully. Finally on to the price: Prawn cocktail: £9.95 Large cod & chips: £17.90 Mushy peas: £3.95 Total: £31.80 (with a £4.92 service charge on top) Not good. For what was served up I would have expected all in for max £20 to £23. Shame. It's a great play on words and everybody loves Jack and the grisly tails of murder in East London. The cod is good, not more nor less than of the competition Poppies. This place gives you extra tartar sauce & ketchup. Mildly flavored and good thing it is crispy or we'll be totally disappointed. The ribeye is thin, good grilled flavor, not strong but good enough. Came with mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. My parents went for the classic English breakfast and pancakes topped with bananas and cream, while I opted for an omelette loaded with turkey bacon, cheese, mushrooms, and tomatoes (salad and sourdough bread garnishes on the side). My dad also ordered a latte. For starters, the portions were generously huge for the surprisingly affordable prices-our bill totalled under £40. Most importantly, everything tasted spectacularly good. After a long day of sightseeing, we had to fulfill the Fish & Chips bit while in London. Our cods were huge battered and flaky just the way we like it. Fries (chips) were thick and served hot. We sat in front of the kitchen area where they prepared the fish and can tell they take a lot of pride in their signature dish. One of my favorite YouTubers reviewed this place (in its original location - it has moved) VERY favorably, so of course I had to go. Well, yeah, sorry Darren John, but... not so much. This place is not all that. The décor is "cute" for some value of "cute" that mashes together American 1950s diner furniture, headshots of famous movie stars from the golden age of cinema, and fisherman-y stuff (nets, fishing floats, and bas relief images of lighthouses and boats). There's also a creepy Jack the Ripper statuette near the door, which doesn't add to the charm, but helps explain the name. It's very clean. The loo is on the ground floor, which is a big plus for me, and is actually large enough not to be horrendously claustrophobic, so points for that. Prices are pricey, as you'd expect in London. This wasn't a cheap and cheerful meal. And we should have figured it wouldn't be great when we noticed that the two lanky young guys sitting next to us (of a slimness and age normally characterized by enormous, indiscriminate appetites) did not finish even a quarter of the food on their plates - especially not the chips. But we were seated, and the slatternly waitress had already deigned to slop over and grudgingly ask what we wanted, so we ordered. Two large cod and chips, please, one with tartare sauce. The fish was okay. It was fresh and not overcooked, but it was skin-on, which I personally find kind of gross, and the batter was... odd. It was crispy enough, but seemed more like a panko crumb crust, and not at all like puffy, lovely beer batter, which is traditional. As for the chips? They were inedible. I've never had chips that managed to be leathery on the outside, but Jack the Chipper managed it. I imagine they were left over from the high noon lunch rush and had been sitting around for an hour or so. They were absolutely DREADFUL, and that's important when they are an integral part - one might say a critical 50% - of the meal. Clean and sort of cute if you like that sort of thing.
