The disappointing thing about all of this is that there is no way the workers who work there understand what are the goals of excellet customer service. I arrived at 9:20 PM knowing that they closed at 10 I had time to eat before they closed. I walked from my hotel as fast as I could just to have enough time because I saw the place as I was walking around I wanted to try it out because it looked really cool. Upon arriving, the Insight area was closed for any new customers. It being almost 930 I could understand somewhat. But in my concern, the worker that took my order said that I could sit outside. I put in my order set up the little bench outside and waited inside for my order to finish. My order finished at 9:30. I grabbed my drink. I grabbed my napkin. My fork went to sit outside and they had locked the bench down. I went back inside asking if they could unlock the bench cause there was still 30 minutes left. The workers there told me they could not unlock it because they need to be finished at 10 o'clock. I told them it would only take me 15 minutes or less to eat and they said no I'm sorry we will not unlock the bench. I ended up walking down the street ate the food as I walked as there was nowhere to sit. The service was really bad in the customer service absolutely unacceptable. My meal was €23 and I ended up eating it cold because there was nowhere to sit. I definitely will not be going back to this place and I highly suggest you do not go to this place if it's 30 minutes before closing and you're trying to eat somewhere where you could sit down. I really hope that the owner reads this and explains to their workers if someone is there ready to eat 30 minutes before closing the average person takes about 15 minutes to eat and should be allowed to eat. One star and most of that is connected to poor customer service. read more

Our first real meal in London and while I wasn't greatly impressed, I can say I wasn't disappointed (except dessert but that might just be my American taste buds). The space is small and packed with vintage decor. It definitely has that old-school, classic London fish-and-chips shop feel. Cozy, a little tight, but full of character. I ordered the cod and chips, which most people agree is what you come here for--and I'd agree. The fish was fresh, the batter was crisp without being greasy, and overall it was solid and satisfying. I also tried the calamari and the sticky toffee pudding. Both were just not for me. Not terrible, pudding definitely ain't aligned with my tongue, but I wouldn't order either again. Service was straightforward and efficient; It's not a place you go for lingering, but more of a sit, eat, and enjoy the experience kind of stop. Overall, it's a good fish and chips spot and worth visiting if you're in the area, especially if you want something classic and reliable. This was the first restaurant we ate at in London in 2017, and our first British fish and chips. Poppies was outstanding on both counts. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, but somehow after a six minute wait they found space for us in the back room. 1950s American music played throughout the place, with posters and records of that time period to boot. I assume it's because they opened in 1952 and they have been trapped in time since. The servers were all really nice and gave us cute knotted bendy straws. So the main event. We got the fish and chips of course. The cod and haddock tasted the same but the only noticeable difference to us was that the haddock had a dark layer of skin under the fried layer. Cook's in Menlo Park, CA was slightly better, but Poppies' was still outstanding. We also had the mushy peas to make sure we had mushy peas while in Britain, but they were nothing to write home about. (I think I'm just not a mushy peas fan.) We all had two obligatory spoonfuls and went back to the fish. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Apparently it arrives frozen from some dessert place. We could have used more than a half scoop of melted vanilla ice cream, but overall it was REALLY good. The daughter loved it and insisted she have sticky toffee pudding for her birthday five months later. We had STP three times in a week during our trip and Poppies was maybe slightly better than the rest. In 2017, 5 stars. A visit to Poppies during our 2024 visit, seven years later was a must. This time we sat outside to be COVID cautious on the only outdoor seating available - three sporting even style wooden chairs that fold in when not occupied. (More recent photos show that they've been replaced by benches.) The fish and chips this time was fine but again not better than Cook's. Yes, California might have the edge over an English chippie. Based on my notes we had all haddock which was a good choice. I noticed this time that the sticky toffee pudding was taken out of the fridge and microwaved but it was still yummy. I love fish and chips but honestly, felt let down by this place that came recommended from various Instagram travel videos. IMHO, better off going to a pub which is where I have been having the best fish and chip experiences. I ordered cod and the waitress said the haddock was better, so I switched but it wasn't so I felt tricked. It's official - the English have no concept of seasoning or flavor and don't know what makes a good fish & chips. This place came recommended by SO many vloggers and reviewers and I even saw a ton of accolades of awards and what not posted throughout the restaurant. And considering the crowds - you would expect it to be at least "good". WHY. This place sucks. I arrived Thursday night around 7 and waited roughly 20 minutes for a seat. While waiting, you get a look at the cooks frying up everything. One pair walked in and said they have reservations but couldn't get a hold of the host so they asked one of the cooks for help. The cook scoffed at them and said they have to wait, with one of the worst attitudes ever. The host finally came by and didn't even believe the pair had a reservation, even when she pulled up an email confirmation from 3 days prior. He knew he was in the wrong and rolled his eyes before taking them to a table. The only decent person I encountered was my waitress, a young girl with braces who really was the only nice person here. I asked what she recommended and I wanted to try two fish with just one "chips" so she said to get the Cod and Haddock, one side of chips, and then I ordered the sticky toffee pudding for dessert, all totaling about 55 pounds. Insanely expensive for what it is. The chips sucked. Soggy, soft, mushy, oily, greasy, no flavor whatsoever. I will say, both fish had a crispy and crunchy batter that wasn't too thick, so that was nice. But the batter had no seasoning whatsoever. Even when I doused it in malt vinegar and lemon, it just didn't help. As for the fish, I couldn't tell you which was which, but the first I ate was the longer and flatter fish. It was flakier than the other fish but dry, bland, and just meh. The second fish was thicker but tougher and again, dry, flavorless, and more of the batter hung off this fish without any fish so what looked like half the fish left on my plate was just empty batter. Surprisingly, the sticky toffee pudding was outstanding. If service wasn't as bad or the wait not as long, I would recommend anyone go here just for the pudding. I'd highly recommend the hot seafood platter because it has a bit of everything and because it was bomb! I love it when seafood is cooked appropriately so it retains its juices, flavors, and moisture! The shrimp, cod bites, and calamari were fried precisely this way (super juicy, not overcooked). Loved how the batter wasn't too heavy for me and very crispy. The whitebait are little fish that were definitely more fish-flavor heavy. I personally enjoyed them but can see how others may not like the strong bitter fishy taste. I'm not a huge fan of fries/chips in general but can say that their chips were authentic fried chunks of potatoes. Salt/pepper, vinegar, ketchup, and tartar sauce were all available. We got our meals with a solid ginger beer (very strong but yummy ginger flavors) and a cream soda that really tasted like melted vanilla ice cream. Really checking off my internal list of British Things to Do during my visit here. I also loved the naval/ocean decor with lots of British culture references on the walls.
