This London chain was recommended to us by our friends who are longtime UK residents. We figured we had to try proper British fish and chips after tasting a couple of so-so meals. Poppies seemed like the perfect iconic choice with its old-school North London charm and 1940-50s repurposed memorabilia which feels like stepping back in time. The servers were attentive right from the start. We were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived quickly as everything was out within 10-minutes, piping hot and freshly cooked. My wife and I shared the classic cod fish and chips 4/5. The portion was decent, the fish was flaky inside with a nice crispy batter, and the chips were golden and tasty - nothing greasy, which was a plus. Loved the capped mini-cup of tartar sauce. This came with a side salad with crispy vegetables and creamy honey-mustard sauce. We stuck to the timeless Caramel Sticky Toffee Pudding (with a scoop of ice cream) smothered with warm sauce. The dollop of vanilla fused with the sponge cake & the buttery toffee sauce did it for us. Simple, comforting, and very British! Overall, Poppies delivered an authentic experience - great service, quick food, and that nostalgic atmosphere. We recommend it, especially if you're after a classic London chippy vibe without any fuss. read more

Poppies is a chain fish and chips restaurant in London. Recommended by our UK local friends to try. Indeed it was good. Had one of the best sticky toffee pudding ever. We ordered the fish (haddock) (they ran out of the cod) and chips ( requested for a crispy one). Came in at almost 8pm and was seated right away. The area was by Camden, not so safe feel but everything was good. This was the closest to our hotel. The restaurant has a diner feel. Service was quick and staff were attentive and nice. Ordered the house salad as well. read more

We were walking around Camden Markets in the morning, decided to come to Poppies to try their 'famous' fish & chips. There was a lot of signage around Camden pointing to this location. They even had signage around the outside of the restaurant flaunting how their fish & chips won awards. The service was decent here, but there was nothing super memorable about the service. Instead of just fish and chips, we decided to order and share the Seafood Platter so that we could sample other deep fried seafood items. Our overall impression of the seafood was the fact that it was rather bland. We had to use copious amounts of salt to add flavor to the deep fried foods. The fries were akin to 'steak fries' we have back at home in the states. We honestly had better quality fish & chips back at home. If this restaurant's fish & chips are supposed to be "award winning" in the UK, then it would not be a good sign for other restaurants around London. read more

Poppies is a chain restaurant. This location is located at the Camden Markets. Ambiance was a 1950's feel with the decor of props and memorabilia. We ordered of course - Fish (Haddock) & Chips. Whimsical store with lots of 1950s and old English style decor. The box was cute and even the bag was designed like newspaper wrap. I enjoyed the cod and chips. Came out piping hot and batter was light and fish flaky. I took one Star as they didn't provide any tartar sauce. It was a solid fish and chips shop. read more

Wow!! London does know fish and chips. This place is really cool with its setup and decor. In an awesome location to all the shops. As far as the fish and chips goes...... dang that was great. The large is perfect for two people to split. Definitely worth a look if you're in the area. read more

Every tour guide mentioned Poppies to me when it came to fish and chips in London, so if I did not do it, I would have disappointed plenty of people. On my last day in London, I ate at Poppies. As mentioned previously, fish and chips are a fairly safe meal to order here. I mean, how can you go wrong with a plate of fries and a two fillets of fish? Sometimes one large one? Unfortunately, this one was slightly underwhelming. It felt like I was ordering a fast food version of the dish. By no means was it like ordering McDonald's, but it felt order, here you are, enjoy, get out. The 1950's post war vibe was cute and that is one of the reasons this is not a two star review. The whimsical experience is there, but everything else falls just short. read more

We loved this spot! The batter on the fish is light, really highlights the fish and quality. Homemade tartar sauce was delicious. Calamari seemed high quality but very few pieces. Staff is not the friendliest. Had to ask for extra sauce or more water multiple times to several different people to get it done. Very few smiles... Diner style location. Would recommend if service isn't important! read more

Let's start with there was no cod !!! They didn't tell us this until we were sat down. We don't eat fish and chips very often so we're really looking forward to some. The chips were very dry and it was so below the standard of good British fish and chips. Dreadful read more

Also while in the Camden area I wanted to try the Fish and Chips which are featured here. This place had a very 1950's American diner vibe along with a view from my seat of hot dogs in water in heated kitchen counter area. Now, my favorite is the Mayfair Chippy for Fish and Chips. This place comes in a close second and gets points for longevity. The service was good and quick but not hurried. They serve the Fish & Chips with homemade tartar in cute little reusable jars (good for the environment!). I read the history on the menu and it sounds like quite a story. I'm always glad to support locally owned small businesses and especially ones that have been around for a long time. Go Pops! Give this place a try. If you don't like Fish & Chips, you could always have a boiled hot dog here! read more

If I ever, and most likely I will, can come back to London for just one thing. It would be for all the fantastic markets, and to get Fish & Chips from Poppies. Located in a bustling area that is Camden Market, you can easily get lost in all of the things to see, eat, and do. But if you're looking for a great meal that's well worth the portion size and price. Then look no further than Poppies. Has a very 80s old school classic vibe. Very casual dining. Be careful of which entrance you go through. The door on the left of the restaurant is for dine-in and the door on the right is for take out orders. Greeted and seated immediately upon entering, I haven't had a place with better service in quite a while. Servers were super nice and made the best recommendations for a good lunch. Wife and I chose to go with the Haddock Fish and Chips. Best choice ever. The size alone was amazing, but the deep fried batter and crunch of the fish was even better. The meat was so tenderly cooked, it would just melt in your mouth. Definitely ask for extra tarter sauce. Chips was great as well. We could barely finish our food, the portion amount is a lot. This was a pleasant surprise to find on our trip to London and the Camden market. I will always recommend Poppies to anyone I know visiting the area. Thanks again for the amazing food and experience! read more

Poppies seem like a pretty popular spot and there is one that is located in Camden Town. This is a place that sells your traditional fish and chips. Ordered a grilled codfish in small size when I came here for dinner because the large was sold out. Overall even the small size is actually pretty big. I ordered the grilled version because I don't want it to be fried but they do have that option and I think many people do order this fish fried. I like the option of being able to choose and the fish itself was super tasty! Service was one of the best that we have had on this vacation trip! We also ordered a beef pie as well to try it out and that was pretty flavorful and the crust on the outside was nice and crisp. If you are looking for a pretty tasty fish and chip place I would totally recommend this spot for sure and they have other locations all around London as well. read more

After walking around Camden Market on a chilly day, we knew we needed lunch somewhere indoors to warm up, thus we found ourselves stumbling upon Poppies. After hearing about this place from others and seeing a couple signs advertising them, we knew the fish n chips were the MUST order item here. Unfortunately they ran out of the original cod fish n chips so we settled for their haddock. But to our surprise the haddock was quite tasty and still cooked to crispy perfection. My only complaint though was that all of their food just seemed to be a tad under seasoned, some salt and malt vinegar was greatly needed. The tartar sauce was good as well, but their containers are too small to dip anything in it. The chips had a nice crispy exterior, but fluffy and hot on the inside, overall solid. The store itself is rather small so if it's busy, takeaway is probably easier. Luckily for us, we came at a good time as it wasn't overly crowded. Their menu boasts a full bar as well if you're looking for a drink. I would recommend others to try Poppies at least once! read more

Hot and fresh fish and chips! We spent some time shopping and strolling around Camden Market. I'd heard recs and seen signs along the street advertising the place, and my family and I decided to have lunch here after wanting a warm place to sit in. My family and I split 2 large haddock fish and chips plates after being told unfortunately that they had run out of the cod. Fortunately our haddock fish and chips were hot and nicely battered and the fries were large! I think we decided that we liked Poppie's recipe over a fish and chips place we'd tried in Borough Market. Would recommend! read more

Average fish and chips. Nice location! I think the skin on the fish threw me off a hit, but maybe that's an english thing?

Tourist trap! And we fell for it... This was our first fish and chips experience in London. Since it was advertised as THE place for fish and chips we came by for dinner. We sat upstairs and that night they had live music. It was too loud for me but others seemed to enjoy it. We ordered a large haddock and chips, gherkin, and a beer each (the selection is really sad but we gave it a shot and it was not good). The food was alright, but nothing to write home about. If you do decide to try it, order take-away which costs ~50% less. read more

delicious fish and chips! for our first fish and chips in london, we had to give Poppie's a try. we ordered a large cod as well as a large grilled cod (yes, you can ask for any fish to be grilled). the service was great for the most part - the lady who took our order was a bit rude, but the man who tended to us was very kind and friendly. we were served a huge plate of fish and chips. the fish was flakey and juicy, even when grilled. i was amazed by how crispy yet fluffy their chips were. so good. their homemade tartar sauce is one of the best we've ever had. the ambiance of the restaurant is super fun - a retro American 1950s vibe. this is a must-try for a fancier fish and chips. read more

For how many people claim that Poppies serves the best fish & chips in town, my experience here was underwhelming. Although the fish did taste fresh, I thought that it could have used an extra kick in flavor - either with more seasoning or a dip. I'm used to having this dish with a side of tartar sauce, so the lack of it really emphasized the blandness. Meanwhile, the thick-cut chips became soggy from the vinegar that was drizzled on. They didn't have that addicting crunch you get from Mickey D's French fries. ProTip: Order take-out to avoid paying nearly double the price for your meal. read more

My husband and I tried Poppie's for the first time after receiving several recommendations from some London locals. To be honest, our experience was very average. I am not sure if it was an off-day but they were out of all sorts of fish so we were limited to cod (we wanted to try skate and halibut). Additionally, our service was just so/so as our waitress seeming a bit distracted and inattentive (when the restaurant was fairly unbusy). I would not return to Poppie's again unless there were no other options available. read more

I love to eat and I am a true foodie tourist in every sense of the word, but I'm sorry to say that Poppies let me down. I had been looking forward to trying it (and added it to my self-guided foodie tour of London), but it turned out to be not much more than a disappointment. The atmosphere is boisterous (loud 50s music) and the employees are friendly. We chose to takeaway our order and sat outside the restaurant on the benches provided. The volume of the music isn't the issue. Even the prices are fair (for London) and the portions are more than adequate. My fish and chips both tasted fresh. So what's the issue? It's the cooking technique. Our fish was so overcooked that it had an almost rubbery texture. It wasn't inedible but it wasn't great (and a fish and chips stand should know the appropriate amount of time to cook their fish). The chips were obviously fresh but they lacked any sort of satisfying crispy crunch. I didn't flat out hate this meal but it certainly isn't something I'd go out of my way to return to or to recommend to anyone else. I think the word that sums this place up best is "overhyped." read more

As an American, the fish and chips were very good. Nothing had been sitting too long. Lively place in a hip area.

We were looking for a great fish and chip place on our recent London visit and this place did not disappoint! The fish was flavorful - did not feel greasy or heavy, chips were amazing. All plates were polished - it's that good! The haddock was recommended over the cod and my son tried that - I tried the cod. We both like the cod much better. Highly recommend! read more

What a let down. I made Poppies the first stop after arriving in London. I had it bookmarked and on my itinerary to make it to Poppies once I stepped foot in London. With all the hype and awards, I was totally expecting some spectacular! You know what's coming up next. I arrived and it had barely opened so it was pretty empty. Made my way upstairs and was seated. Essentially it's just fried fish or other fried seafood and chips (fries for us in the States). We asked the waitress for suggestions and portion sizes decided on the larger sizes and different types of fish. We also ordered an assortment of drinks, one of which was really good was the ginger beer. I love ginger beer and this was actually really good and I would order it again. As for the actual fish and chips dishes, the large portion was way larger than the waitress told us. Great that we got more food but we could've done without ordering two orders which meant we were left with a ton of leftover fish and chips. Regardless of which type of fish we chose, the flavor was about the same. I say it was a bit bland and more breaded that I had hoped. The chips were fluffy and decent but way too many spuds for my liking. We also got an order of the Chicken Pie which is pretty much a Chicken Pot Pie with chips on the side as well. A lot smaller than expected and about the same price as the huge plates of fish...I don't know why...The pie was also not hot enough and wasn't very flavorful as well. Coming back to the service. The waitress first told us the portions were a lot smaller than they actually were. Next, they were not very attentive throughout our meal and did not come by to ask how things were. They did clean up the table very quickly but that was it. In terms of the check, they were also quick with that... I wonder why. Service as a whole was mediocre. I was utterly disappointed at Poppies. They are supposed to be award winning but I felt that there must be other places that had better fish and chips and better service. Sadly, we left the restaurant super full, with empty pockets because the plates were relatively expensive, and wishing we had the little stalls of street food nearby instead... read more

So when in London, you must have fish and chips..Right!?? My friends and family recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Several locations in London, we wanted to try it out here. Large restaurant, servers are friendly and uniforms are super cute. I ordered cod and chips and a side of mashy peas. It was nice, the fish was cooked well not too greasy, fish was nice and flakey, and the batter was just right not too thick or thin. The chip were also nice went well with the fish. The mashy peas was ok, was never a fan but it was nice to have some type of green with the meal. Stopped in for a quick lunch after shopping in Camden market. Great little place that has been here since the 1950's. The service was very friendly, ant the pale ale was tasty. You can get haddock or cod, and the plates are regular and large sized. We split the large fish and chips (haddock since the large plates of cod were finished for the day) and had a pint. The piece of fish was definitely large, lightly battered, and perfectly fried. The chips (fries) are fresh cut and delicious. I had to get my fish and chips fix while I was in London. I was going to be in Camden Town that day and Poppies was heavily advertised so why not. Even at 2pm on a weekday, it was pretty busy but I luckily got a spot because I was by myself. I got the cod and it came with a ton of chips (fries). The cod was nicely fried with a crispy outside and a flaky, tender inside. My only complaint was that there was absolutely no seasoning, not even salt. I guess that's what the condiments were for. The fries were pretty good but they weren't as crispy on the outside as I would hoped, but really fluffy inside. Overall, I had to season everything myself but it was a pretty well made meal and would recommend the fish! read more
