While walking to dinner I smelled this place, and damn it smelled amazing. No yelping or trip advisor searching we just walked right in bc it looks and smells so good! Wonderfully friendly service as the ppl at the register quite patiently explained the menu to us. They most likely could see tired messy tourist radiating off of us. Quick and easy time ordering, a reasonably quick wait for super fresh fish fried to perfection with this light almost buttery batter. Could not resist the melty I sides of both fish and chips, condiments of course at each table. Choose the hip outdoor street seating or very cute insides. Tables a bit sticky yes but overall clean and lovely. Menu note: They have choices of fish and other items too. There are also meat pies and battered sausages!

This is a really cute place! Its small and cosy and the decorations couldnt scream 'london' more lol. The people here were very friendly and I really got that family business vibe. The price was very reasonable and portions were huge. I do have to say, if its your first time eating fish and chips, dont expect too much. Its really just fish and chips. But the chips were nice and crunchy, the batter of the fish was really crunchy and not too thin or too thick. And I love it when my food is piping hot when it comes out. I wouldnt say its a place to go out of your way to find (tbh I dont think fish and chips in general is something to go out of your way for) but if you're in the neighborhood, its nice :)

I stumbled across this place trying to find a quick bite and I'm so glad I did. First of all this place is spotless clean, you can tell they take pride in cleanliness which reflects in the quality of food. I ordered the cod and chips. The fish was fresh, flakey and perfectly battered. The quality was above and beyond. Served with a side of their homemade tarter, it was exactly what I needed after a few pints. And to top it off, the staff was welcoming and polite. Whenever I make it back to London, this place will be on the shortlist of places to come back to.

When in London…read more... Anytime I visit the UK, one of my must haves is good old fashioned fish and chips. While at my hotel, I searched my trusty Yelp which brought me to Hoxton Fish House. I didn't have to look at the menu at the counter - I simply said "fish and chips" please. I took a seat outside and waited for my delectables to arrive. The time seemed like plank/burpee minutes, but in reality the food came out relatively quick. When I took my first bite / it was mission accomplished. Each bite was all I wanted and more. The fish and chips were fabulous - I ended up unable to finish due to the size of the meal. The atmosphere was pretty laid back and sitting outside was somewhat relaxing. If you're anywhere in the area, I highly recommend this place!

The interior is quaint, very quiet but the staff was friendly. I ordered the tradition Fried Cod with a side of chips. Although it didn't come in a newspaper like my friend and I were told that the best fish and chips came in. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal! You may be thinking...what about the tartar? Well, I'm here to tell you that you also get a side of tartar. Order two if you can, it did just the trick to pair along with the fish. The cod was fresh, as well as the chips. Highly recommend that you stop by if you find yourself in the Hoxton neighborhood.

This was the first restaurant we ate at in London in 2017, and our first British fish and chips…read more Poppies was outstanding on both counts. It was a Saturday night and the place was packed, but somehow after a six minute wait they found space for us in the back room. 1950s American music played throughout the place, with posters and records of that time period to boot. I assume it's because they opened in 1952 and they have been trapped in time since. The servers were all really nice and gave us cute knotted bendy straws. So the main event. We got the fish and chips of course. The cod and haddock tasted the same but the only noticeable difference to us was that the haddock had a dark layer of skin under the fried layer. Cook's in Menlo Park, CA was slightly better, but Poppies' was still outstanding. We also had the mushy peas to make sure we had mushy peas while in Britain, but they were nothing to write home about. (I think I'm just not a mushy peas fan.) We all had two obligatory spoonfuls and went back to the fish. The star of the show was the sticky toffee pudding. Apparently it arrives frozen from some dessert place. We could have used more than a half scoop of melted vanilla ice cream, but overall it was REALLY good. The daughter loved it and insisted she have sticky toffee pudding for her birthday five months later. We had STP three times in a week during our trip and Poppies was maybe slightly better than the rest. In 2017, 5 stars. A visit to Poppies during our 2024 visit, seven years later was a must. This time we sat outside to be COVID cautious on the only outdoor seating available - three sporting even style wooden chairs that fold in when not occupied. (More recent photos show that they've been replaced by benches.) The fish and chips this time was fine but again not better than Cook's. Yes, California might have the edge over an English chippie. Based on my notes we had all haddock which was a good choice. I noticed this time that the sticky toffee pudding was taken out of the fridge and microwaved but it was still yummy. But overall this visit I'd have to give it 4 stars.

The space is small and packed with vintage decor. It definitely has that old-school, classic London fish-and-chips shop feel. Cozy, a little tight, but full of character. I ordered the cod and chips, which most people agree is what you come here for--and I'd agree. The fish was fresh, the batter was crisp without being greasy, and overall it was solid and satisfying. I also tried the calamari and the sticky toffee pudding. Both were just not for me. Not terrible, pudding definitely ain't aligned with my tongue, but I wouldn't order either again. Service was straightforward and efficient; It's not a place you go for lingering, but more of a sit, eat, and enjoy the experience kind of stop. Overall, it's a good fish and chips spot and worth visiting if you're in the area, especially if you want something classic and reliable. I'll continue stopping by when I'm in London but solely sticking to the cod and chips next time.

(I heard the non GF version was also excellent.) Platter came with flavorful mushy peas, tartar sauce, and a spicy mayo (or currry for the non GF platter). Chips were large and delicious. Portion was huge, and easily shareable. Delicious!! Service: It was ok. We waited in line for a really long time (more than an hour) but we were checked on from time to time. Once we were seated and ordered, no one really checked in, but we asked if we needed something. Ambiance: Cute outdoor seating. In door seating was okay. Reservations get to go into a back room which seemed nicer. Lovely side street in a crazy busy popular area. It's a solid 4.5 stars for what it is because the food was so good. I'd return. Tip: Make a reservation a couple of weeks in advance, or be prepared to wait...a long time...Or, skip the line to order takeaway and go enjoy your food!

Fast forward a half hour or so and in came lots of hipster-types with their oversized black-rimmed specs and skinny-jeans, fast-forward another hour or so and in came the over-dolled up ladies. I popped to the loo only to find myself walking through an area completely different from the bar front. I started wondering if I'd walked into a Wetherspoons by accident. It smelt like disinfectant and cheap aftershave and was full of old men and angry-looking young ones. And then I was back in the front bar surrounded by bimbos and "men" (read: boys) with hair like they'd just stuck their finger in a live socket. ... dear lord I'm getting old... The bar area is really big, so it is ideal for large groups, and pretty central to all the other places in the area. A plus is also the huge neon sign outside makes it easy to spot. We only had drinks, but the food that came out looked really good. I had pleanty of opportunity to see it, as the barman also acted as waiter. His waiting seemed seemed to be his priority, as I had to wait patiently at the bar, as he kept disappearing to get more meals from the kitchen. At least I knew I would be the next person to be served, as I was the only person waiting at the bar. The drught beer selection seemd to be sewn up by the Camden Brewery, although they had one draugh lager alternative in Estrella Damm, which was my choice. On going to the toilets downstairs, I saw a huge function room, which I understand is a populr disco. Despite appearing invisible for several minutes, I would come back here. It had a nice laid-back atmosphere. Although I'm talking about a Sunday afternoon. I'm sure it's a totally different stoty on a Friday por Saturday evening.
