We were heading to the Charles Dickens museum from the British museum about lunchtime and ran across Fryers Delight. As we are visiting London for the first time, we wanted to try English Fish and Chips. Sherry had cod, and I tried the haddock. Both were perfectly cooked, not at all greasy and served with thick cut chips. The restaurant is your local comfortable place with customers picking up takeaway and about 6 booths. It was nice and clean. Our waiter was an efficient friendly gentleman who took our order quickly and brought our drinks and lunch equally as fast. If you are in the area, give it a try. read more

The first time I visited this place was almost 20 years ago. It was also my first time in London. Today, the haddock tastes just like it did then. The only difference is the lack of newspaper wrap. Apparently that's not allowed anymore. Nevertheless, the fish and chips is a no frills plate but it is a healthy portion. The breading is light with a perfect crisp without much flavor but that is why you just add salt and malt vinegar. I can't speak for the other dishes but if you're craving fish and chips, this is the place to go. read more

We were in London only for two nights which as anyone visiting London for the first time will tell you is barely enough time to tackle a quarter of what you plan to do. The thing I most wanted to do was get a proper fish and chips meal from a chippie. I had envisioned dozens of takeaway stands with fish wrapped in newspaper but the reality is, that's a thing of the past in London. We found only a handful of worthy spots in London ... most of them in the soho/theater district area. It came down to Toff's and The Fryer's Delight and FD won because they are one of the few spots to use beef fat dripping for frying. Most other places use less expensive (and healthier) oils for frying. The inside of the FD looks like the 1960's. Same color scheme and formica everything as back then. I rather like the old school time warp but it won't be to everyone's taste as you either retro or you don't retro. The staff can be described as surley to say the least. At first we thought we did something offensive as any bit of conversation was deflected with a grunt or blank stare. The visit was completely devoid of warmth from a staff perspective and often the counter help stared into space like robots while preparing the food. The fish was good ... THICK crisp batter. Very bland so you'll need to douse it with vinegar and salt. I thought the beef dripping would add flavor but apparently not as I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between US fish and UK fish. Also, note that the Brits leave the skin on the fish filet, which gets gooey and can be eaten, but I must admit I like the filet fried without the skin like in the US. The batter was not as light and tempura style as I had remembered from my experience eating Harry Ramsden fish and chips in Epcot. It was crispy and crunchy at FD but everything tasted fresh. I got the Cod. The chips were okay ... nothing too special. C A side of curry dipping sauce for a few pounds more was a good addition as the fries were bland. The mushy peas was a huge portion and a little mushy peas goes a long way ... Overall, I'm glad we stopped into this time warp. It felt like 1960 inside and the meal was good and cheap for London. I'd like to try one of the other contenders such as Toff's for a comparison. I am surprised chippies are so hard to find in London these days. It seems takeout burrito places, Nandos and Pret a Manger have pushed the chippies out as Britian's takeaway food. read more

This is an old school fish place. It still has a bunch of 60s fixtures in here. And if it was in L.A. it would have a "Film location available" sign placed somewhere. It's really kitsch or whatever that would be in England. The owner's are the third pair of hands to run this place. I do wonder does it take three blokes to run this small shop? There comes a time in one's life where you travel to the far ends of the earth (this term is relative) and search out what is the best of something. Seeing as I'm from San Diego California in the US, the UK is pretty dang far for me. What else is London known for food wise other than fish and chips? We searched for a place for lunch and recalled we were suggested Fryers Delight by an old school friend of mine. We went, we sat, we ate and boy were we surprised. When they plopped down a plate full of chips and half a fish, We thought we should have ordered half the amount and shared. The fish was beautifully cooked (Not overdone and not greasy) and the taste was good. Unfortunately, they were out of some of the fish we wanted to try but we made the best of what we had. I would love to go to other places in London and try this staple dish but alas, the body can only take so much fried food before I have to pay for two plane tickets to get my glutinous butt over there. read more

The chips were OK, but the fish had the crispiness of soggy bread and the meat was reminiscent of the rear part of a freezer case which hasn't been opened in five or six years. (I am a lightweight indeed) I don't know if it's because I wasn't raised on them, but I don't like Fish and chips. I KNOW! SHOCK! followed by taking away my visa.. but I feel literally like death after I eat fish and chips. So i was DELIGHTED to find that they had equally (if not more) fattening pies! and they weren't PORK! I decided to try this place again. The more London gentrifies and the fancier it becomes, the more I want parts of its crumbled, bedraggled past to remain and keep it all a bit real. Nothing has changed inside Fryer's Delight in the two and a half years since I set foot in here. Which is no surprise as it might not have changed since before I was born. The only thing that needed to change for me to like this place a lot was the freshness of the fish. And that is one thing that has, thankfully, changed since my last visit. The fish was good enough to bump up my previous rating to 4 whole stars. I would have left skipping, if I hadn't been so full I could barely walk. Remember this is a "chippy" and the food comes with no frills. However, it is good enough not to need any. And stepping inside is like stepping back in time. There aren't many places left you can buy time travel AND good fish for a tenner. read more

I'm partially giving this place a 5 to raise its average, but mostly because it's the best chippie I know of in London. I've recently had fish and chips elsewhere, which has prompted me to write this review, because it made me wish I was back here... Not too greasy, not too much breading, there was actually quite a good amount of fish. The chips were good too, all the way to the end, the sausage was good, the gherkin was good but the pickled onion could have been a little more crunchy. I ate in, and I liked the décor and the atmosphere. All together it's a very solid meal, and for a good price. It's the best chippie I know of so far. It didn't make me feel bad afterwards either, which, all things considered, is pretty damn good read more

I believe this is what you'd call a right and proper "chippy." There's no bullshit here but that's exactly why you end up trusting or at least buying into it... There are about four red laminate booths, tiled floors, and a menu that has probably been the same since they opened (adjusted for inflation?). The waitress plunks down plate (or platter... certainly big enough to call it that) straight from the counter - a big ol hunk of golden fish, three handfuls of fries, a wedge of lemon and off you go. Salt shaker and bottle of malt vinegar are on the table. All are crucial for bringing out the flavor, but also especially because they make the "Fish&Chips" experience everything you imagined. A burly man hauled up wire-baskets-full of their chunky squarecut potatoes from a rather dodgy looking basement, at least 3x while we ate, which means they go through them like crazy. The food here reminds of my childhood, back in the days where I still had taste buds that hadn't been clogged with the lovely filth of excess. Anything powerful enough to break through to what lies beneath is certainly worth a few stars in my mind. I love their chip butty. It is of excellent quality. Soft fluffy chips, fried to a light crispy coating, and lots of melty butter in the roll. It is also excellently priced for food so superior to nearby competitors. The service is brusque, but then it is a fish and chip shop so it is to be expected to an extent. I just wish they'd added more salt. I asked for lots of it. All I ever want is more salt. read more

The best place I know for fish and chips. Every time I go, it's always a haddock and fries for me. And all that for less than 7 pounds despite the location its at. It can be very popular during peak periods and there won't be any seating available then as this place is rather small. But you will still be able to take away, which is as fast as you can see them make it. There are really only 2 guys and 1 waitress handling the store, but service is good because there aren't too many people in the store at any one time. read more

It is a proper 'old school' chippy, complete with an eat-in menu at one of the formica tables inside. It sells proper chips at a reasonable price and is great to grab a snack from if you are heading into town. Alternatively, treat yourself to a sit down meal of fish n chips, bread and butter and a nice mug of tea. Its clientele are locals and office workers who are in the know, and whilst it is always busy, you never have to wait too long to get served! This is the quintessential British fish-and-chips shop. They offer several different kinds of fish that are skillfully fried. Portions are large and very good value for the money. Every time I am in London I seek this place out for a good meal. I enjoy the plaice, haddock, or cod depending on my mood. The fryers really do know their craft! Inside is clean, tidy, and vintage. Formica obviously lasts a long time. There is no pretense or posturing here with the food, decor, and staff. They serve great fish traditionally prepared in a simple environment. When I got my meal home it had almost disintegrated the paper it was wrapped in, so it gets points for effort. Haha Its actually funny in hindsight, and actually when we were chowing down on the chewy refrozen chips we kinda giggled at how badly we chose this place. I used to live in London for a few years so i have been re visiting some of my old haunts and old favorites, yesterday my girlfriend suggested we go to a fish and chips place - as its a good English thing to do. We rocked up to Holborn, and walked over to the place from the Tube stop. Walking past a fantastic looking old school butcher i thought, hell yeah we are in a good part of town where the tourists dont go and this will be tasty! There are great booths to sit at in The Fryers Delight, great old photos and reviews from famous people and a great big Take away menu full of interesting fried goods including Cod Roe Fry. We sat down with a fried piece of Cod, chips, peas, and a fried piece of Cod Roe. As Im an adventurous type and i love all things roe, i had to try this. First sign of trouble: As we are kinda impartial to a good mushy pea (like the one at Harry's in Sydney) we asked what kind of peas, and whether they were the mushy type, the waitresses answer, no they are processed. Ok, maybe i could live with this. What proceeded was the worst meal Ive had in a Long time! The peas were indeed from a can, no matter, i do like things from a can sometimes! But these peas tasted like they were cooked in Mineral Turpentine. i kid you not. The cod was precooked so it was luke warm. The fish although frozen was ok inside, it was frozen fresh so it wasn't deadly but the batter was terrible and soggy and limp. The chips, the best things on out plate, felt dry and frozen several times before being cooked. Now the Cod roe. wow. I have never tasted anything that vile. It was obviously cut from a solid block that was fallen from a can. It had the smooth sides to prove it. Ive smelt dog food before and you can imagine what it could taste like, but this cod roe actually tasted that bad. It had so much vinegary preservatives in it that kept it from rotting, i had two little bites as i was game enough to give it another go. We also had a little side dish of pickled egg, I now can taste the difference between fresh vinegar and bad sourness like i had in the roe. We left kinda smiling at how in the world other people actually rated this place, even if we went at the wrong time of day, No place that serves food to the public should be allowed to what they did to us. read more

This place is amazing. We often make mile-long detours to this chip-shop as it is probably the best in the area, and is also probably the cheapest. There is usually quite a long queue outside, but it is well worth a wait, even in the rain if necessary. The food is excellent- all the fish is freshly fried to order and the chips are fried in beef dripping. It's built in the style of a classic caff with white tiled walls, simple, comfortable and communal tables and big windows facing out onto busy Theobald's Road. This is the home of the law courts and legal bigwigs, but leave any pretensions at the door along with your brolly. The servings of fresh plaice, cod and whiting are massive, for the price, and come with an optional slice of buttered crusty white bread, a pyre of chips and lashings of whatever sauce you may fancy.
