Landed in London this afternoon with a starving family, jet-lagged and exhausted! How fortunate that this pub was across from our hotel. Excellent service, fare and atmosphere. The other menu items had my mouth watering and I will be back during my stay to try them! Hangar steak was perfectly cooked with a side of green peppercorn sauce and some chips. We went to this restaurant partially because it is really nearby our hotel. We went there late in the evening , maybe that was the reason, the service was not great. The food overall is ok based on our experience, quite different from the rankings online. I was very surprised with the steak that sitting in a puddle of sauce which overwhelmed the taste of steak. We had two meals here and they were both fantastic. My son fell in love with fish and chips here. I had one of the best ribeye steaks I have ever eaten. Be sure to get the blue cheese butter sauce. Amazing service as well. read more

2nd time here... because the first time we came here foods was delish! This time around I came alone bc hubby at work (here for business trip) - anyhow, I get to tried their £16.95 menu (only 5-6.30 pm)... Currently I stay literally across from them (Crowne Plaza) Anyhow... Today I'll be trying : Starters : Buffalo chicken wings with hot sauce and blue cheese dip Main course : slow braised beef short rib with bubble and squeak, tender stem broccoli, garlic & root veg liquor Also I added on the side : garlic mushrooms As for drink, I tried their espresso martinis - it's a bomb! Unfortunately, this tavern disappointed on many levels. We arrived midday at the hotel and as we waited for the room to be ready, we stopped here for a bite. I ordered the fish and chips and my partner ordered a chicken salad. The fish was fresh but mostly breading and the fish fillet was not skinned, so you also had black fish skin to eat, which is something I'm not accustomed to. The chicken in the salad was undercooked. We were greeted by an amazing waitstaff who was willing to explain everything to us. The service was quick, and the food was amazing. I popped in for a quick steak and a pint. The service was fast, attentive, and friendly. I had a cask ale and the 8 oz filet with new potatoes. The steak was exactly how I requested it (medium) and tasted excellent without any sauce. The potatoes were also tasty. Bread, butter, and water were brought to the table (at least at dinner time). Right across from my hotel was this gem we didn't even know was there , we had been to other places to eat after staying here awhile and stumbled here by chance. Glad we did, we were blown away by how good the food was! We thought this was just a Beer place. There were 4 of us, we had Lamb chops, chicken, all the trimmings, desert and Beers. All was fantastic, the service was excellent and the vibe was very cool, I would say this place is a mix of Pub meets Restaurant. We have to come back in a week and will be back for the Sunday Roast. We came in for a late lunch (13:00). The service was great. The food was delicious. This is a nice pub, with good food. The windows and doors were open providing a nice view of King's Cross Road. Enjoyed the black pudding scotch egg immensely. Probably the best we had in London. I had the sea bream special, the lady had the rack of lamb. No complaints from either of us. The food is universally tasty - better than pub, but for gastropub there are more "foodie" places to go (not that I'm self-identifying). But the Tav', faced with stiff competition down the street from the likes of the Eagle, competes on price. We were on our way to another restaurant, but we were SO hungry that we wandered into Union Tavern, enticed by the very well-priced lunch special (6.90 pounds for a set lunch). The special includes a starter and a main course. For my selections, I had the falafel and some nicely cooked fish with mushy peas. The gentleman had the escargot style grilled mussels and the schnitzel. Everything was quite fabulous (the schnitzel was our favorite!) and service was attentive. The waitress even kindly explained that "lemonade" meant a drink akin to Sprite/Sierra Mist (in the states). Really nice gastro pub between Farringdon and Kings Cross. I think the crowd may be half local and half tourist due to a couple of hotels in the vicinity. Had an excellent Sunday roast here with a very nice bottle of red and it didn't break the bank at all. I'd recommend it if you're in the area. read more

I couldn't get in the restaurant bit, but there were some very excited girlies in there so I was glad to be in a quiet bit. The Union Tavern is a very pleasant, well turned-out pub on the fringe of clerkenwell. It is friendly and relaxed, with a nice old-style decor (big mirrors, engraved panes etc) with a good choice of wines and beers. Using Yelp, we were looking for pub-type places and found that this was across the street from our hotel. On a Friday evening we were seated right away. We were looking for good beer and chose a Wimbledon lager. It was exactly what we wanted. My husband chose the venison and boar dish, I went with fish and chips. Pleased with both. I was surprised to find that I really liked the smashed minty peas served on the plate. Lots of variety in the food and drink menu. The service was quick and attentive. They have daily specials in all courses. We shared a warm apple and pear crumble served with custard and house made vanilla ice cream. Delicious! We tried the Sunday roast (friend got chicken, I got pork belly) with the soup of the day (tomato basil) along with a cider each. The soup was excellent and the amount of food for £13 was impressive, but I left feeling like I ordered the wrong thing. I didn't really care for the pork and the roast potatoes were over-roasted and tasteless. Hat's off to the staff, who are always very friendly and pleasant and obliging. It is lovely to have such a beautiful traditional Victorian pub like this close by and I have brought friends and family here. My main reason for giving 4 stars is that on one occasion I was eating there the staff were really flexible and put together a special dish for me I am vegan. My only critique would be that the range of vegetarian menu options is extremely limited which means I cannot eat as often as I would like because there are usually only two/three dishes on the menu I can eat (falafels for start and vegetarian pasta dish main, and sometimes a good vegetarian soup). So, if they could improve that I would give this pub 5 stars. read more
