What a fantastic place to visit for lunch, Happy hour, and or dinner. This 4 story bar and restaurant caters to all ages and venues. You are lucky if you can find a seat when you walk up. It is quite the hangout and the food is fantastic. They offer a full bar. I switched it up on this visit and had some red wine. The wine was great. We ordered the beef shanks, risotto, and sides. Trying to figure out what I would try first was quite the task. The kitchen did not dissapoint. First class service from staff. Definitely a place to visit. Reservations are recommended. The Culpeper is good for its location and the atmosphere. However, the service is very bad. I didn't receive the right drink, and then when I asked for what I ordered, I got the wrong drink again! At that point, I just drank it and didn't complain but I would expect better service from a higher end restaurant like this one. It's also really ridiculous you have to pay that much for a slice of bread! That should be free. Also, when I called to make a reservation, they said that there were no rooftop bookings available. Then, I went online and saw that plenty reservations were open! The food was just okay, but if you have to pick, get the burrata. The garden is gorgeous and so that's nice! read more

Stopped by Sunday around 130pm and got seated immediately- it was busy but not packed. The ambiance is much hipper than I expected of a pub with tons of natural light and plants. My husband specifically picked this for the roast and it did not disappoint. It actually exceeded my expectations and I'm a tough critic. The lamb came with potatoes, shaved Brussels sprouts, roasted carrots and onions, and Yorkshire pudding. This pub screams "Instagram me". Visually, it's stunning: high ceilings, exposed brick, natural light, dotted with thoughtful elements of hipster charm. I passed by the other day and the sign out front declared this would be my new local, so I went in to see for myself. I've been waiting for this place to open and it seems like it was worth the wait. The bartenders are delightful, knowledgable about the selection of local London beers. The food is kind of a British-French gastropub fusion. I had a summer ale and an artichoke, tomato and goat cheese tarte, which was delicious if a little pricey at £12. Overall, this place shows tons of promise in its early days. During the month of August, The Culpeper, are doing a Lunch or Supper picnic for £15 a hamper, which includes a welcome drink (G&T's, billed as the best Gin & Tonics known to man), so took a group of friends up to the recently opened rooftop herb garden to try it and the supper out on its first night. We picked up our hampers from the kitchen on the way up to the rooftop where we were greeted with a magnificent view of the Gherkin, shame it was spoiled by the scaffolding of the building next door, the herb garden occupied the space at the back and tables were laid out with table cloths for our picnic, so looked like it was going to be a posh picnic, but unfortunately no plastic picnic plates, in the hampers were take-away boxes of food: ciabatta bread, herb-garden crisps, a pork pie with piccalilli, duck rillettes with cornichons, roast chicken mediterranean vegetable with Israeli couscous salad and a chocolate and walnut brownie. No points for presentation or eating out of the boxes, but the food tasted good and fresh. They forgot to give us butter for the bread and we did not realise until we requested more bread and it came with butter :-) The picnic supper is only from 7pm to 10pm, so by 10pm, it was getting quite dark and quite chilly for a summer's evening, being London. We had a night cap and departed around 10.30ish, although we never felt we overstayed. Service was good and attentive with the bar man running up and down the three flights of stairs to the kitchen to attend to anyone's needs. Oh, the G&T was ok, nothing special. read more

We went here last summer after seeing a picnic on the roof advertised in timeout X price (can't remember now) for a hamper with lots of home made goodies inc pudding We got there at 6.30 and were taken up to the roof garden which has a lovely view over Shoreditch and also is their garden where they grow herbs etc There was someone serving drinks which were yum Then half hour later they brought us our picnic which was pretty tasty! Also blankets as it was a bit chilly Lovely idea and well executed Pub downstairs also looks good. Not sure about the rest of the food though but would go back to try it! read more

A proper gastropub in the Aldgate area is obviously going to do well. One that is open until 2am, sports a rooftop 'farm' and 5 bedrooms is going to do very well. I like the Culpepper; I keep being drawn back. It's perfect during the day for lunch in a rustic, sunlit space full of science lab style stools and beige sharing tables. The clientele livens up at night, with cocktails and prosecco dominating in what is always a busy space, despite having several floors of seating. Any place that uses the space cleverly, whether by fitting no nonsense guestrooms or carving out a space for potted vegetation in a semi-greenhouse, I have to show it some love. I also admire the well organised, bookable waiting list giving everyone a chance at the rooftop. Though, I'm not buying the home grown victory garden thing which I find unsustainable in the city and improbable given the popularity of the place. That's all for now. I'll reserve further stars for when I've tried the highly regarded food. read more

A good one to cross off my shortlist. And I was right to put it in my shortlist in the first place. Great pub, pints are priced ok given the location. It can be very noisy after work but still, it's really a nice place to meet with friends after a long ad rough day. Which is what we did! Just a bit "dissappointed" by the lack of seats... It was surprisingly crowded for a Tuesday evening. There's apparently a restaurant upstairs (not sure), guessing as I saw a lady standing there with menus on her hands. Will definitely be back here again! The ambience and decor is trendy and rustic..and great for big groups. The service was A+ with attentive and friendly staff throughout our meal. Their menu is updated daily and quite original - we ordered an artichoke blossom appetizer (it was literally a cooked artichoke where you pulled the leaves to dip in a crab butter) and the roasted lamb with chickpeas and spices - ! Would have loved to try this place but was unable to grab a Sunday roast due to confusion around the hours they serve on Sunday. All across their website they advertise daily lunch and dinner times that apparently do not apply on Sundays and are not posted anywhere. Was actually going to head over earlier in the day when I noticed I was in the gap between them, only to be told on arrival that the kitchen had closed when dinner was to start. So for those wondering, kitchen closes at 6pm on Sundays. read more

This place gets packed full of people and I went on a standard weeknight! The establishment stays well lit and the atmosphere is very bustling with various professionals and parties. The layout of the place doesn't set the right mood for mingling so it seemed that it was good for people who already knew each other and were there with their own groups. The price was fair and the service was average. At times I wondered if there was some bias on who was at the counter ordering as to who got served first so we got one drink, checked the place out, and left. read more

I loved everything about my experience at the Culpeper this weekend, although this doesn't involved food, yet. Staff was helpful and professional, mostly french speaking (haha the accent doesn't lie). 2 levels and 1 rooftop that gets pretty busy once the sun is out, but Culpeper's website makes it super easy to book online (how about being able to book through Yelp guys?). It's super spacious and I can't seem to think of another gastro-pub that is so well decorated. It's rough but airy, attention to details is king, and plants all around give that vegetal look I love so much...there you have it, I just felt super good in this setting. I am a BIG fan of this pub, it's deceivingly huge with 2 floors and a rooftop green house/terrace. The overall vibe is welcoming and typical with a slightly cooler British pub BUT not too Shoreditch cool which is good. The place is constantly busy on the weekend but you are usually able to grab a seat. They have a great cocktail list and apparently serve a mean bloody mary! On this occasion I had a large glass of rose. They're slightly on the pricey side but when they say large, they mean large. Sadly I haven't tried the food but their menu is extensive and the food that I've seen come out of the kitchen looks and smells great. Noted to try! Overall this pub has everything you need at any season and if in the area looking for a beverage I will always drop in and suggest you give it a try! :) read more

They also have a variety of local craft beers in bottles! I've been here twice and both times extremely impressed. Everything I've had here is deeeeeeelicious and the price is not going to break your bank although quality is at par as those places whose price are. Simplicity with good ingredients seems to be the motto here. Fresh fish, fresh vegetables and taste is just right. Dessert we had was impeccable - came here in June and had the poached peach with ice-cream and it immediately got on my unforgettable list. Portion was not big but neither was it too small - it was just the right amount to be a satisfactory dessert. Ah and the cocktails do not disappoint those who are thirsty. Craft beer list is solid so those craft beer nerds you bring along would have quite a few good options. But despite the quality food, Culpeper is about more than that, it's about the great decor in a Victorian building with an awesome rooftop and excellent service. The hanging foliage, combined with the bear walls adds a shabby chic look which is complimented by the background music. Great selection of spirits. We also liked the hooks under the bar to hang our coats, a handbag or umbrella on. Top cucumbers in the gin. Well played all round. read more

Came for Sunday roast during Easter, we shared a large side of beef. It was quite delicious, perhaps a bit on the simple side. I appreciate letting the ingredients shine, but given the establishment reputation I thought more. That's but to say it wasn't obviously prepared with care though. The gravy was light and perfect for the beef. Definitely book ahead though. Points for decor, a wonderfully bright room with natural light. As the ultimate test, I would certainly bring someone here to eat, and will go back. read more

This is one of my favorite pubs near the city. Came here on two separate occasions The first time was with a mate and we came in the summer for a pint. On Sunday the place was packed with diners and the food looked good. After our first, we headed up to the roof and they made some excellent gin cocktails ( mine had dill in it). The BBQ was on blast. Would love to come eat here. The atmosphere was relaxed and upscale. They had a good selection of Truman and other non standard beers. We enjoyed the place so much we nicks need it the Dante after the nfl quarterback Dante culpepper. The second time we came after a meal at Tayyabs. It's less than ten minutes away but seems worlds away from white chapel. Enjoyed the bartenders recommendation of Williams chase gin and tonic- he told me it's cheaper than what I was ordering and tastes better. I also appreciate that they do not sell it the tonic water separately. Can't wait to go back and try some food here. Definitely a hidden gem on commercial street. No far from the city read more

But the food (fish n chips especially) is great, wonderful evening atmosphere and the roof garden is a sweet touch if you can wrestle up there. This place is amazing stem to stern. Beautiful building , great beer, but the food...is cheap and delicious. Vitello tonnato special is the best Food I've never had. I took a picture via yelp of the beautiful dish and closed my phone immediately before posting in order to devour it as soon as possible. Upon reopening the app, yelp had reset and the picture (along with the dish) was gone. I thought about crying, but I decided to be a man and just order another later in the week. Impressive gastro pub. The food is nicely done here. I had clams and mussels for a starter, and extremely tasty it was too. I had the Ray for main. Bit of a speculative choice on my part. It was ok but short of excellent. I wished I'd ordered the pork which looked very nice indeed (confirmed as excellent by my companions). The mess for dessert was lovely. I found the wine list short on new world options, but I would say that. Service was good. Very pleasant, although the food was a tad slow to come out. Prices were fine. All in all, we like it, most satisfactory. read more

I'd give this place 5 stars for the cocktails. 3 stars for the food. The bacon on the BLT was too salty (also or crispy as an FYI), the pan con tomate was also very salty but otherwise would have been very nice. The cauliflower plate was the best thing I had and the duck rillettes was good. The fish and chips were supposedly under seasoned, but I didn't try them and the people eating them did not use any malt vinegar. Chips were very good. The cooking was indeed top notch, especially the starters. Our waiter on the was simply wonderful, she really looked after us and always served us in such a warm and kind manner. Great pub, restaurant, hotel and rooftop bar. I drove by as I was on Commercial St and saw it's crowd spilling out onto the sidewalk and decided to come and check it out. The roof top fits about 30 people and is a nice little hideaway. But if you want to go and hang out there make sure to arrive early because it is first come first serve. The horseshoe bar on the first floor is really where all the action is. I tried a couple of beers and they weren't as cold as I liked. It was a hot day and all I wanted was a nice cold crisp beer. I spoke with my bar tender and it appears all the beers were the same temperature. The atmosphere makes for a great happy hour so I would definitely come back. They just need to get their drafts colder! read more

After reading a glowing review from Fay Maschler from the Evening Standard I was keen to try this place. We went on a Monday night--a night when the dining room floor is closed. Not sure when it is open? That meant dining in the pub which meant hunting down a seat and then ordering at the bar. All of the tables were taken up by drinkers so we ended up on the bar facing the windows on stools but luckily it was a quieter corner as the place was quite loud between the music and the chatter. We ordered "mains" but left hungry despite the hefty price. I had skate which was quite tasty but the presentation meant I was constantly fighting bones. My friend's tart was beautifully presented but could not have been that filling. We ended up spending nearly 20 quid a piece on very light-on-food plates and soda waters and no wait service. I left feeling unsatisfied and still hungry although the fish was good--although so hot that I burned my mouth. The one thing that this place has going for it is a really nice space. It is a really pretty interior with great windows. Kind of curious about the rooftop herb garden as well..... read more

This place used to be the Princess Alice and for a while the City Darts. We came in for a quick one before going to Lupita down the road. It is far less busy than the Ten Bells further up Commercial street. The new makeover has stripped away some of its more pubby interior and replaced it with long bench seating etc. However it has retained much of its original character. That said it had a pleasant atmosphere and a decent beer selection. I would probably prefer the Ten Bells but this is great if that is too busy. For nibbles they have some bizarre homemade popcorn which has bits of pork fat in it! I declined when I saw the fat. Not sure where that came from. I'll stick to peanuts.
