If you "fancy a proper pint" while visiting London, we'd recommend a visit to Ye Olde Mitre. Opened in 1547 (that's not a typo), it offers limited seating both inside and out. It can be a little tricky to find, since it is located in a small alley, so this is not the place you just happen upon. You need to set out in search of it. We'd recommend navigating the extremely narrow staircase in order to toast with friends at "The Bishop's Room" upstairs. Its cozy environs are coveted by locals in the know. We arrived in the early afternoon to find it completely empty. However, long before we could finish our drinks it became a standing room only situation. Food choices are limited to homemade bar snacks, so plan your visit here mostly for the beverages. We found this to be a great place to stop for a quick respite from sightseeing. I stopped in Ye Old Mitre to get out of the cold, and I'm very glad I did. I was surprised at how empty the bar was, especially given its location, but apparently I was visiting during low season (no complaints!). The staff were extremely friendly and turned the music into our personal playlist. Drinks and prices were excellent. But the star of the show was the interior, truly a beautiful place to relax and warm up. read more

Hidden gem in the London hustle and bustle. Very quaint and old time pub with all the charm of going back in time. Difficult to find if you have never been, it is down an alley that opens up as you walk through. The dark rich wood interior is cozy and has the authentic feel of going back in time. Ye Olde Mitre is the oldest pub still standing in the City of London (which y'all know is only 1 square mile big, but still impressive come on). Is that what makes is so cool? Well, probably yes, but there is much more to it. The place was built in the 1500 and I must say that the first time I tried to find it I never did, it's so hidden. it was so rainy and I was so tired. Long story short, in the second attempt I was luckier and in no time we found this tiny little alley behind a church that lead us to the coolest pub I've been so far. I mean, where else in the world you find a pub built around a cherry tree where the first Queen Elizabeth danced around? Cooooooooool! The ambience is history by it self, but if you want to learn more, you shall find the notebook available in an upstairs room that explains the history of the pub. The walls are old you can even see how much the floor has gone down, the first room we walk in from the street is so small that probably only fits 6 people sitting Let's talk about beer, it's a pub after all. They have excellent choices, nothing too fancy but the beer on tap is fresh and yummy. If you need a snack they also have options but I've never tried myself. If you are only in London for the weekend I'm afraid you won't get to visit this place as they only open from Monday to Friday, but even if you can't get in it's worth to walk around the pub/church area and see a little bit more of London's history. read more

Said to have been founded in 1546, the current building dates from 1772, and feels like it. That's if you can find it, that is, for never can a pub have been so well hidden: Ely Place is a tiny side-passage off Hatton Garden, just up from the junction with Holborn Viaduct. (At the moment, (6/7/07) scaffolding on the street frontage makes it even harder to find). It was built supposedly to serve the staff of the Bishop of Ely, who had his London residence adjacent. The residence was the setting for all sorts of history (it features in Shakespeare several times), including a five-day banquet for Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon in 1531, at which gargantuan quantities of food were consumed. The residence is long since gone, but the pub thankfully survives. It has several small rooms (including a small snug), wood panelled and covered with prints and pictures. An alleyway snakes around the building, which now provides space for the smokers. It's very cosy in winter, and very atmospheric. Its location means that it less frequented by tourists than many other historic pubs, although immediately after work it does get very full with City folk. It also featured in the 2000 film 'Snatch' by Guy Ritchie, starring Brad Pitt. The beers include guest ales alongside Adnams (Broadside) and Deuchars IPA - one of my favourites, and generally in good form here. They do very traditional pub food - scotch eggs, sausage rolls, pork pies and pickled eggs, alongside simple toasties (amazing value at £1.50) and nuts, but (oddly) they do not sell crisps. The staff are friendly and helpful, and know their beer - they host occasional beer festivals. Overall, a great place for a pint. read more

If I lived in London I could, without a doubt, drink my life away in here. Set back off Hatton Garden down a hidden alleyway, this is a pub that you need to make a destination of. You won't find many tourists in here due to its near-secret location in Holborn, so it feels like real London in there (they filmed a scene from Snatch in here for goodness sakes!). It's got a tiny little bottom floor which gets packed shortly after work lets out, but if the day is decent you will find most people spill out into the little courtyard - it's perfectly secluded behind the buildings around it. Even if it's raining there is a section with a covered roof to stand under. I'm including a photo of an excellent sign posted by the bar - indeed if you are a proper real ale drinker from the North you WILL find this place on any respectable list, so this might be a requirement! read more

It was great to finally get here today on st Patrick's day. Cozy "British" pub with great atmosphere and quirky architecture you would expect in an a old, historic London bar. Honestly, this is the best English pub I've visited during a trip to London with my grad school program. I am very American, I'm just putting it out there, and Ye Old Mitre Inn was everything that I could've asked for and more (seriously what you would picture an English pub to look like in the movies). My girlfriend and I arrived around 5:30 p.m. today. There are multiple entrances and sections of the pub and we found a place to sit relatively easily (I feel like bigger groups would have a problem although my close friend and her group of Buzzfeed UK colleagues had no issue taking over the entire second floor). We sat and enjoyed a few glasses of wine and beers while we chatted about all of the interesting things happening in London. Can't tell you much about their drinks other than the glass of Sauvignon Blanc that I enjoyed was phenomenal. About ten blocks away from the Holborn tube stop close to my hotel. It was awesome, especially with the pictures of important dead English figures hanging on the mahogany wood walls. Five stars in my book :] read more

I do like Ye Olde Mitre. The name sounds like one of those fake Ye Olde tourist trap places but this is real. The pub has been around since 1546 but not sure any of the original building remains. Like many old(e) pubs in the City of London they've often been rebuilt, extended and modified several times over many years. What I like is that it's surprisingly down to earth and un-gastrofied and all the better for it because it's a pub, not a restaurant. The staff are quick and have some banter and the drink selection is good. It's a Fuller's pub and has the usual Fuller's beers including London Pride and Honey Dew (a good one). It still feels fun to go there down the almost secret alleyway and the back room is nice and cosy for the winter. A favourite pub in the City. The crowd is a mix of regulars / after work crowd from the area and a few visitors coming to check it out. All good. read more

Apparently this happens to be London's oldest pub. I'm going to have to trust the internet on this one namely because I plugged 'London's Oldest Pub' into Google and this was one of the pubs that it spat out. I can't remember how old it actually is, but I believe it dates back to around the time of the Great Fire in 1666. Anyway this pub can actually be a little tricky to find, namely because it is hidden down an alleyway. At first I was expecting a proper London Alleyway, not a narrow behind a doorway Brussels Alleway, but after walking around looking for if for a few minutes I eventually found it - namely because somebody came out suggesting that she was expecting a lot more from 'London's Oldest Pub'. Anyway, as a pub I actually quite like it, especially since it is actually hidden away from the rest of the city. Sure, it may not feel like you have stepped back into the 17th Century, but there is a rather quaint feel about it nonetheless. At first it looks small, but it turns out that there are a number of rooms around here, and it appears that the alley is actually a part of the pub as well. I have to admit that I quite liked this place and would definitely be back. read more

Coolest quaintest spot! Amazing atmosphere. You really AREin what is clearly one of the oldest pubs in all of London. It's very small and the menu items are minimal at best, so don't go there to eat, go there for an amazing location, great beer and atmosphere. We ordered wine and that was terrific too. This was my favorite pub of my mini-crawl! It was in a nice location, wasn't stuffy, had a good selection, and good servers. I ordered at the bar, sat on a bench and enjoyed, then left. I love history, so walking into a place like this is fun for me. Being American, it was awesome to think this bar has been there (granted, probably rebuilt or remodeled several times) since a little over 50 years after Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Let that timeframe sink in. It celebrated it's bicentennial several decades before the USA was the USA. If you don't have GPS, be sure to pay attention to the signs on the wall. They say its haunted. It's bloody haunting to get to the other side of the bar that is. I mean, once you in, your in your segment of the pub. To exit you may have to walk round the block to get to the other side of the bar. Its like in the middle and each segment of the bar is almost in a different building. Whether or not I was mildy drunk the first time I went I don't know but it was a magical experience nonetheless. Ye Olde Mitre Inn is one of londons oldest pubs. A long serving place, where drink is the mission, not food. No, this place is a fortress of londoners and their post work boozing. Its quite tricky to find if you were indicated the area. Its between buildings and roads. Not a thoroughfare but a needle in a haystack. That said, its a wonderful find indeed. I love this pub and its one of london's best! A pub in the wall. I always enjoy a pub that is a bit hard to find, Ye Olde Mitre is one of those. Situated on Hatton Garden the Diamond District of London. If you are looking for a quiet pub with nice seating, then you should probably look for somewhere else, this place is always busy and situated down a mews which adds to its charm. The reason you know the pub is there is because of the amount of people in the alley. The drinks aren't exactly cheap, the food is nice and the service is pretty fast, you can sometimes get a seat but it is the exception not the rule as most flat surfaces have people stood with a drink. If you are looking for a quaint pub that you want to show people and are in the area, I'd suggest this place for sure. read more

A great Little pub that has it's own mini beer festival once a year. The ales are always well kept and it gets very busy at lunchtime, where you can choose from toasted sarnies, sausage rolls and scotch eggs The staff are always attentive and efficient. Outside there are barrels on the main passage way and more down a little side alley. When I say this place is small, I am not joking. 15 people on the front bar and 15 in the back and it's heaving, but don't let that put you off. Well worth a visit! read more

When I was a baby, my parents use to leave me in my Moses basket in the office and sneak off for a lunchtime pint here. If I were them, I'd have done exactly the same. The Mitre serves hands down the best bar snacks in London (cheap, too). Large, savoury gherkins, delicious scotch eggs - so I'm told, scotch eggs aren't really my think - and, my God! The most moreish toasted sandwiches in London, rich with mustard, pickle or whatever else you want. Mmm... Ale-wise, the list is great, but I'm a G&T girl so quite happy with that. Get into the snug in the back bar and settle in for a lazy afternoon of drinking, snacking and relaxing. It's bloody freezing in winter though, so if you're near a window, make sure you've got a jacket to hand. read more

Ye Old Mitre is a hidden pub in a little alleyway off Hatton Garden (opposite Boots). The nearest stations are Farringdon and Chancery Lane. Inside the pub is very small. It gets crowded very quickly but it's a good place to be if you don't come during lunch or after 5pm. There is no music. The wooden structure and the picturesque deco give this pub a traditional touch. Outside the tables have been replaced by barrels. No stool nor chair. It looks very picturesque. The food is ok (typical pub food), they are known for their toasts. A must see! I highly recommend it read more

We know it is worth the small effort to enter along the very narrow alley (at the Holborn end) running between Hatton Garden and Ely Place to find this wonderful place. It is a Fuller's Brewery house. This former Tudor site and subsequently rebuilt public house remains an English beer celebration. Lunch still remains very basic eats. Recommend the toasted sandwiches. We found the "behind the bar" people obliging and helpful. If this ever changes, go elsewhere. During our visit, English staff made conversation with customers. In London! The lunchtime trade relies on a mixture of local business people and tourists. We, now among the latter, are clearly expected and welcomed, but in return we do not want a pub bistro. This public house remains a serious English beer house. Of course, good wine and other wet sales (tradespeak) are available. We will watch pricing policy and Fullers. Courtesy always counts behind the bar. The Mitre is a good example where the staff excel in good mannered service to customers. They maintain exemplary standards. We advise you arrive before noon. Later lunch visitors will find no prisoners are taken by regulars in the grab for seats at the tables inside! Standing mainly only possible outside with your pint on an upturned barrel for young and fit. Highly recommended for a summer thirst quencher. If you can find a seat this is a wonderful place to while away a winter's evening (or a winter's afternoon, for that matter). Its history and idiosyncracies are what give it is unique charm and, as surely one of the smallest pubs you'll ever come across it is certainly intimate. An absolute swine to find (and possibly to fit into), but once you are through the door it's worth the trouble. The beers are the usual Adnams offerings (but that's not a bad thing) and the food is simple but quickly served, well-priced, and fits with the nature of the place. read more

This is the spot in London for a mellow drink ! Great atmosphere. Has that isolated antiquated feel to it that just breathes relic and I love places with that kind of feel since London can often have that shiny and squeaky sleek feel to it. I stumbled upon this place with a friend while waling through the streets late night and yes indeed, it was a nice discovery to our surprise.
