The Queen's Larder is a classic London pub. It's relatively small but has a cozy atmosphere. We came looking for dinner and discovered that they only serve "pub food" from noon until 3p. After 3p, this pub is for drinking only. From what I could discern, the pub caters primarily to locals, I.e. I didn't see many tourists. So - if you want food, come before 3p BUT if you're looking for a great pub for drinks, this would be a great option. read more

I will die before I let someone bl*w up this pub. Oh the memories. The bartenders here are efficient, calm, and temperate. A couple ciders on tap and then all your other beers and stuff. Don't know much about that but people I know who drink beer go there and are happy with their options. Haven't spent much time inside, mostly like the tables lining the outside of the building. Somehow there's always a half open table you can weasel your whole group into or an open table, no weaseling necessary. But at the same time it's always busy because PEOPLE LOVE IT HERE. I am staying around the corner at a hotel and the doorman suggested another pub sort of next to this. The pub looked nice enough but not as "local" (meaning seemed a bit more american to me and I'm American so wasn't looking for that) Anyway, I decided to grab a pint at this pub and LOVED IT! Looked like a place my friends and I would go to grab a pint, sit outside (or inside) and just chill. This was our stop number three on the crawl that night. I never went indoors so I cannot say anything about the interior though. Decent selection of draughts. We sat outside - nice. Nice, little pub, really traditional and can easily be the lunch stop on a surprisingly charming walk through Holborn. There's two parts to this place - the main bar area downstairs and the restaurant upstairs, which has a great view over the square. The staff are good here and the crowd are pretty mixed, tourists inevitably, hospital staff inevitably and locals occasionally. They've got Green King on draught which isn't great in my book but they've got Leffe and plenty of others too. Haven't had the grub but it looks good enough and I'd say this pub is definitely one of the better ones round this way. read more

A really charming pub close to the West End on a quiet street between Russell Square and Holborn tube stations. The pub is named after Queen Charlotte, wife of the 'Mad King' George III, who kept supplies for him in a cellar underneath the pub while he was being treated for insanity by a doctor in the square. The dining room upstairs is very charming, and full of posters from the West End like the rest of the pub. There was a large group who came here for food and drinks after work besides our table, and they certainly enjoyed their food while we tried the lovely house wine and lagers (including Leffe blond!). There are even some benches outside where you can enjoy the sunny weather in the summer, in the not too windy square. A gem as its so close to the tube stations, but hidden away on a quiet street! read more

This is my absolute new favourite number one pub. It's absolutely tiny and although it fillls up quickly and easily, it's pretty easy to squeeze in somewhere. It really revs up for Christmas filling every space with decorations and playing festive tunes on repeat. Sort of sounds like hell but it was actually a surprisingly fun place to settle in for a friendly chat. The beers are pretty standard and normal priced although they do have Leffe too. The best thing about this pub is the local almost country atmosphere despite its location bang in the centre of town. It's really hidden but surprisingly easy to get to. read more

The Queens Larder is a charming little pub close to Russell Square and also the Great Ormond Street Hospital and a Neuroscience institute. Though it is beside Kingsway road it seems secluded and quiet. The ground floor is a handsome bar and there is an attractive dining room upstairs with views of Cosmo square. There are also benches outside which are a picturesque place to sit in the summer months. The bar is well-stocked and the service is friendly. As an American tourist, no one has every told me about some of the more unusual differences in etiquette -- especially in pubs. It seems that tipping is not usual here. I go to the Queen's Larder my second day, order a pint of beer for about 3.50, hand the barman Dave a five-pound note. He gives me the change, and I put the one-pound coin on the bar. He says slowly, solemnly: "Thank you very much, Sir, thank you indeed. That is most kind of you." I knew I had done something to offend him -- he ignored me for the next hour until I left. OK, so tipping is not usual in pubs, OK. But shouldn't a barman know that tourists don't know UK pub customs, and take it in stride? After that near-hostile reaction to an innocent, misguided tip, I am not going back to the QL again, even if other barman (Andrew, the friendly, personable one) is working. read more

5 Stars for all the other things people have been saying. I went there twice tho'. First time was excellent. The lady behind the bar was great, good beer, warm on a cold night - all that good stuff. Second time a guy was bar-tending - seems to be anti-American, made a totally unnecessary fuss about paying by credit card - there is a 10 pound minimum, and it is posted - fair enough, but my tab was about 8.5 pounds. Told I couldn't use my credit card. So I rounded up with a tip to 10 pounds, and got hassled (muttering about 'yanks')???? What is with that? The creep kept the tip tho'. Let's hope this idiot does away. If you are an American, try to get served by the cheery lady. read more

Great beer selection, fantastic & comfy atmosphere, and Andrew is a very pleasant barman. Squeeze into one of the tables on the bottom floor or hop up to the lounge on the second floor for some extra space. Either way it's a very comfortable pub where one can feel right at home. Prices are very reasonable at something like £3.75 per pint. We had a blast! read more

BEWARE THE BLACK QUEEN. My wife and I are on our 5th trip to London. Given that we have been to all the major sites 2 or 3 times we decided on this trip to immerse ourselves into the local culture a bit more. We are always respectful and look forward to enjoying whatever the experience brings. This trip included a stroll to the tucked away Queens Larder. On our first visit we were served by a younger black gentleman. He was a bit stand offish and curt but I didn't think much of it and we ended up enjoying the evening chatting up an English gentleman and his grandson. On the second visit we were served by an older white haired lady in a black dress. THE BLACK QUEEN. Not only was she curt, she was rude and completely ignored me while pouring our beers and went out of her way to talk to a local standing next to me. Later she snuck up upon us and took away our beer glasses before we were even done drinking. Upon reflection I can only come to the conclusion that this place does NOT want tourists in their little establishment. The locals only vibe is intense. They will serve you but obviously prefer to fill up with their local friends. If you are looking for a fun out of the way London pub experience skip the Larder and the Black Queen. Go next door to The Swann. The beer selection is far superior as is the food and the minute you walk in they will welcome you with open arms. read more

Yep, the rest of these reviews are spot on. Lovely little place (and it is tiny) but we had a quick lunch here and enjoyed it greatly. MK had the Bacon/Cheese Pie (turnover for you Americans) and I, the bangers and mash with onion gravy. Couple of nice beers and great Christmas decorations. I like the area it's it too. Just around the corner its a bit crazy-busy but since this faces Queen's Square its super quiet and peaceful. Most definitely a stop here the next time we're back. read more

Went here for after work drinks with friends, and have to say we quite liked it. Cute little place with indoor and outdoor seating and homey vibe. Hoegaarden and Leffe on tap as well as some other ales, definitely a decent selection. Indoor and outdoor seating area, inside cute little benches and corner tables to sit and chat, although the inside did have a rather strong 'old beer' smell, a little of which i don't mind but it was rather sour. Didn't love the TV that was on, on mute but still distracting! It's one of the things I have come to love so much about pubs, that there is no TV flickering in the background while you have a pint and talk to your friends. Just no need, really! Definitely a decent little place but could lose the TV! read more

A new entry in the Top 5! Best ploughman's in town I wrote this review some time ago after quite a long, boozey lunch in the Queen's Larder (is that a euphemism?) and decided that it was probably drunken nonsense and best not to post it. Having re-read it, and revisited the pub many times I've decided to post it anyway! There is not a word of a lie, not a single exaggeration in the following review. One of the best pubs in London! I don't know how often you go to a restaurant or pub, or meet a new friend that you just love SO much that you want to tell everyone you know about it. But what then?! All of a sudden everyone knows about your new favourite place, everyone wants to hang out there, it gets busy, the place tarnishes, it's no longer special, and beautiful and ALL YOUR VERY OWN! So, Phil and I don't really talk to each other any more. On a less creepy note, The Queens Larder is much like my former-friend Phil. Quite simply, it's perfect. Tucked away off Southampton Row, Queen's Square is like the Secret Garden, just with out any locked doors or creepy Franciscine boys conversing with robins a little haven of peace and tranquillity, flowers and trees, complete with market squarette and the wrought iron gated Queen's Square Gardens. Seriously, if Peter Pan had been a little less ambitious he could well have ended up by here instead. And, by Zeus's beard! Is that a Green King boozer I spy?! Now, you may have realised from the timbre of my musings (and by my use of the word timbre) that I have just been enjoying a rather lengthy and boozy lunch there. As a consequence I am in much trouble at work (despite a LARGE box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts to apologise for my late return and the delicate bouquet of ale and pickled onions I brought along) but I would gladly suffer the indignity all over again for the pleasure of sitting outside this charming old town boozer, in the sunshine, with the best Ploughman's I have had in a long time, a good pint or two of Green King's finest, and a facefull of sunshine. On to some less abstract information to drink. There is the standard selection of lagers, cider, etc plus a couple of Belgium poncy beers. Most important, there are three Green King cask beers (both the IPA and Sunchaser are top drawer) and a wine list which no pub should be ashamed to have (though I can see the wine bar brigade's heckles bristling slightly) The food menu is to die for! I know this is a subject on which I have moaned before but there are so few pubs where you can go these days and have a proper pub lunch. I'm talking Ploughman's, a proper Club Sandwich, pie and mash, a huge array of sandwiches which revolve largely around cheese and/or cold meats. Having seen a laden plate making it's way to a neighbouring table my friends and I all went for a Ploughman's, though for sake of variety we ordered one of each ham, stilton, cheddar & brie. I also ordered a bowl of chips. Although it wasn't the most rapid service in the world, I don't mind! There were plenty of other diners, and the food was evidently carefully prepared and beautifully presented. I'm impressed at their ability to pile so much food onto one plate with out it looking like well, a pile of food! The ham, home cooked, cut thick as y'tongue, delicious, juicy and flavoursome. The cheese was served in huge, door wedge chucks, mature, at the right temperature, just as it should be! All this was accompanied by pickled onions, pickled gherkins, a hard boiled egg, a generous helping of salad, discretely dressed, creamy soft butter, sweet pickle, a hot apple pie (move over sliced-of-Brabourne! You're old news) and generous slices of fresh, crusty bread. I don't think that any one touched the chips. There was just no need. read more

These guys are thieves who will try, whenever possible, the 'short change trick' (or at least the older grey haired lady who tried it on me two nights running, second time (last night) successfully). I think she's the landlord, not sure. Here's how it works, you order some drinks and pull out a load of change and notes and they offer to sort it out the change + note combination... mine was a 20 pound note and some change for 7.80 drinks or so. They say "Look, let me sort that, just give me, 2 pounds 40 and that (the 20) and I'll fix you up... then they come back with, in my case, a tenner and breeze off. So they've effectively stolen 5 pounds off you. I was too embarrassed and also absolutely exhausted after a day looking after my family and niece (who has cancer and is on Great Ormond Street) that I couldn't be bothered dealing with it... I also thought I might get pretty angry as I've got a bunch of pent up rage at the world at the moment, so I resolved just to writing this instead. The night before I just paid by card after she tried the same thing, I wondered why she looked so disappointed at the time. I get that she's probably just trying to take advantage of tourists, and it's only 5 quid, but not everyone is having a beer there for a fun 'ye olde english pub' London holiday thing and it's a crap trick. Also the 'cold' lager was warm. There are plenty of other nice pubs around, try The Perseverance or The Lamb when it's open again. read more

I'm from out of the country and I try not to judge places until I've tried them. I really think people who live or visit the UK should yelp more because this place was pretty legit. Never really tried pubs before and I feel fortunate for this first experience. Did you know... That you can order half a pint?? Never happens in the U.S... Also, the staf was awesome and personable! I also liked the person I net from Sweden even though she was having a bad day. Place seems like it always gets crowded and there's a nicer homey feel from it. Nice local atmosphere in the heart of Bloomsbury. Medics, students and tourists mingle in the small bar and forecourt and a convivial occasion is practically guaranteed. Hoegaarden, Old Speckled Hen and Greene King should satisfy the ale buffs; Carling for the merely thirsty. Lunchtime food stretches neither imagination nor wallet but fills a gap. Needed a pint before dinner and it was a mild evening in mid-May. It delivered 100%. I would have given it 5 stars but the bitter selection was a bit weak. We opted for London Glory which was fine and served properly. Staff are very friendly and so is the crowd which for an overflowing bar on a Friday night, is important! Most people were happy to be standing outside to drink. There was a small room upstairs which if you really needed to escape from the masses is an option. However, it did feel a bit isolated up there so we stayed with the heaving mass downstairs and pounced on some seats when they became free. I love my bitter and my pubs and I had no complaints about the Queen's Larder. read more

This pub is nicely located, away from the busy roads on a quiet street which makes it a good spot for a quick pint or two just out front. Inside there's a small bar downstairs, with 5 or 6 small tables and a nice, if low key atmosphere. The bar is well stocked and it was good to see Leffe on tap. read more
