When in Rome... aka when in a pub!

So fun!!! So cute!!! Got lost and ended up in an alley alone. Raining, dark! And with a dead phone. Far from hotels, far from Uber. With a dead phone! And viola. A warm and bustling refuge!! Helloooo, Red lion! Thanks for the rescue. A bar full of people! Having fun! What! Here I am walking forever in the rain alone. Finally, people. With no empty seats. But! The upstairs.. way way up! Like 3rd floor up: so empty and so gorgeous. Alas, saved from the rain! With a drink! And an outlet! Omg.. I will make it back to my hotel after all. An hour of drinks, drying up and charging later! I left happily out of this alley with a working phone and an Uber on the way! Thanks for the rescue, Red lion! Seriously!

Stopped in here around 10:30pm for a pint, was told I had 15 minutes before last call, what is this craziness? I'm used to last call being no earlier than midnight! The pub itself was quite cozy, it was busy but not so busy that we couldn't get a seat at a table (made out of a barrel). The bartender was nice and the prices weren't bad at all.

A small but attractive and very busy local tucked away just off Pall Mall, with many original Victorian fittings, and what claims to be one of the oldest licences in the area. Crown Passage is a wide alleyway with something of a feel of 'olde London' - or as much as it can muster, given the number of expensive and trendy eateries along its short length. But the Red Lion, at least, is very traditional, from the pilastered brick frontage to the hanging baskets above lead-light windows. Look out for three original gas-lamp brackets, now painted red (below awkward electric replacements). A grade-II listed building possibly dating back to Georgian times, the cosy interior has extensive oak panelling - and beware, it is very cosy and gets very crowded indeed. Upstairs there's a larger function room, also used as an overspill when they're busy. The pub has a sign claiming it to be 'London's last village pub' and, while that might be pushing the hype a little too much, it does have something of the feel of a country local, except for the accents: a mixture of well spoken executives and foreign tourists. But it's still miles better than many of the alternatives in central London. Beers include Adnams Bitter and St Austell Tribute, so real-ale fans are well catered for. They also serve food, although getting a table can be a bit of an Anneka Rice challenge

This place saved me today. I had taken an international flight to London last night and was in serious need of coffee. The service was prompt, friendly, and invited us with open arms for what we needed. There is a Red Lion in the US, but none of them have their service. The menu looked delicious that I told my friends we must come back for more and try their menu. If food isn't what you need they have delicious cappuccinos and lattes.

This was actually a pretty cool pub despite the fact that it is located near one of the priciest parts of London. While it is generally considered 'the Pall Mall pub' it isn't actually on Paul Mall but rather an alleyway that juts off it it, which actually gives the pub a pretty cool flavour. Mind you, it isn't like one of the Melbourne back alley bars because it appears to have been around before Melbourne even had Alleys. The service wasn't the best, but the cosy and homey atmosphere of this pub actually made up for that, as well as the fact that it was hidden down a back alley (which is always a cool thing). Even though the pub was small, it was also pretty quiet and we were able to sit down and have a quiet drink. All in all I have to say that it is actually a pretty cool pub and would definitely come back.

Great pub, only 2steps away from Downing street. Typical British interior and atmosphere. Next to Westminster underground station. Smooth service: I ordered a G&T and was instantly asked to go for a double one.....something I could not refuse:-) . Great food: I ordered an Indian curry pie, accompanied by homemade chips and, off course, gravy. Good price/quality ratio, certainly considering the location.

Stopped here for a good pint and some even better pie. Sat down fairly quickly and first thing I noticed was the great atmosphere of the restaurant with the main bar downstairs and the dining room upstairs. I knew this place had some good beer and I saw that they had a great pie selection as well so I jumped at the chance to get the ale and pie tasting. This tasting came with three beers paired with three pies. The beers were off the chart and the pies were pretty darn good as well. My favorite combo was probably the Stilton with the sweet potato pie. This had the best taste and the beer was a very good pairing with. This place is definitely a solid choice for a good bite and drink.

We stumbled across this restaurant as we were enjoying the sights in London. The outside drew us in and the inside was just as beautiful! 3 or more floors and the place was packed! I could see why, the food was absolutely delicious. My friend had the fish and chips which was to die for and I had a pie which was just as amazing. The service was pretty good and it was one of our favorite meals from our entire trip. If I'm ever back in London I hope to stop at this place again.

Reputed to be the second oldest pub in London, this is a fantastic, friendly and traditional pub near Green Park

Classic, yet delicious. The best meat pies in London, or top 3 for sure. Better to make a reservation in advance. Yummy.

Remarkable, he scored and I literally walked around the corner and saw the long line to get into the pub first. I was seated immediately, however, and proceeded to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast. Room was very pleasant (there are so many I got lost returning to my table from a bio brake. Roast was very good ( but no Lawry's) and the sides excellent. Could not decide if my favorite was the roast potatoes (crispy outside soft inside) or the glazed carrots. Yorkshire pudding was good but again, I am to used to the Lawry's and this is a different style. Peas were, well, peas, but very fresh. The sticky toffee cake was excellent and the Guinness fresh, creamy and a proper pour. Good thing because the selection of winners by the glass and half bottles of wine were both a little thin. Overall wine list was good but I was alone and not up for drinking a full bottle by myself. Overall, very enjoyable and to judge by the crowd and difficulty in getting a reservation, one of the more popular in town.

The history alone makes it worth visiting, and the location is perfect if you're exploring the area. It feels very classic London in the best way. We stopped in for a pint and honestly... the whole after-work beer culture over there is something I really need to bring back with me to the States. The beer was great, the atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming, and it just felt like one of those places where people naturally gather and stay awhile. Definitely worth stopping into if you're in the area.

Two story space - the ground floor feature the bar and handles walk in lunch; the upstairs is a dining room for those with reservations. Fun fact, as part of the history, the pub used to be the host of bare knuckle fights and had regulars like Charles Dickens. Wildfarmed sourdough - served with whipped salted butter and Guinness butter. Well toasted bread and the butters with salt were well made. Fuller's London Pride marinated steak and ale pie - served with seasonal veggies and red wine gravy, as well as either mash potatoes or triple cooked chips. If there is one dish London does really well, it's their pies. It was beautifully made and loaded with steak. The red wine gravy was decadent and added a perfect amount of moisture to the pie. Triple cooked chips were perfectly crispy but fluffy on the inside. Corn fed chicken breast - served with garlic and sage butter, mash potato, cavolo nero, and crispy onions. Only took a bite of this as it was my partner's dish but the bite of chicken I had was very juicy and well seasoned.
