So Ship Tavern was right around the corner from my airbnb during a recent London stay and it quickly became our favorite pub! Not just fabulous food (the Sunday Roast rocks!) and drinks BUT the staff was so warm and welcoming. I also LOVED the decor - super cozy in the London cold and rain. Stopped here by mistake. What a great find. Friendly staff, nice bar, and very good food. We had calamari to start, followed by steak pie and fish and chips. We stopped here after our tour of the British Museum. The staff is friendly and the pub has a nice, cheery atmosphere. The bangers and mash were delicious and the steak sandwich was good. There was more sauce and toppings than steak on my sandwich but what I received was tasty. We noticed many people ordering fish and chips which also looked very good. What a deliciously authentic experience! Being from the Midwest, I am a total meat and potatoes gal, often making pot roasts and such. When I learned about Sunday Roast tradition in England - I had to try it. After researching various spots, I decided to try Ship Tavern due to their incredible reviews and historic ambiance. It did not disappoint and exceeded my expectations properly. I chose the beef sirloin Sunday roast plate, and made a reservation online in the morning day of. Note: I was a solo diner (that was flaked on) so I recommend you secure ahead of time bc I think it was just dumb luck. They make their own house gin, so I started off with a g&t which was v refreshing. Next, the meal came. What a gorgeous plate of food! Unlike American pot roast where they use chuck typically and the veggies are cooked to soft -- this was much fresher; cabbage still had a crunch and the carrots more firm and tasted like they were straight from their garden. The meat was beef sirloin and although some pink, not raw or bloody. Tasted fairly lean with minimal fat. The potato's were my favorite and crispy on the outside. Everything perfectly seasoned and the gravy was a nice enhancement and not salty. Service was top notch; attentive and warm. Atmosphere was so great -- I'd compare it to HMS Bounty in Ktown. I sat downstairs at the bar, but was still a regular table which I appreciated. Thank you so much for a delightful meal. I won't forget it! This was our first meal in London and we were pleasantly surprised. Our server was pleasant and the inside of the tavern had a rustic but modern feel. We started with the croquettes which we enjoyed but the stars of the show were our entrees. The fish was HUGE and fried so nicely. The battery was nice and crispy and the fish, hot and flaky. There were so many chips I felt I could barely make a dent in them. As an American, I'm not used to mushy peas but they weren't bad at all and the tartar sauce was great! My fiancé had the Cumberland sausage and really enjoyed his dish. It was our first time trying Cumberland sausage and while it was not my favorite, he enjoyed it. The creamy mashed potatoes combined with the perfectly sweet and caramelized onions made this such a warm and comforting meal. We were told to try the off menu sticky toffee pudding but unfortunately we forgot to. The next time we're in London we will definitely be back to try the pudding and other dishes. read more

I found Ship Tavern on Yelp when I was researching places for Sunday Roast near our hotel. We liked the menu choices - beef sirloin, roast chicken, lamb rump, and pork belly - at a reasonable price (£27), with all the fixings (roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, carrots/parsnips, Yorkshire pudding, and gravy). They also had a veggie Sunday Roast option. We showed up for an early dinner without a reservation, and fortunately they were able to accommodate our party of four. Other walk-in parties showed up later and had to be turned away. We ordered the lamb and pork belly to share, along with a vegetable Wellington. I would've loved to try the traditional beef Wellington, but it wasn't being offered on their Sunday Roast menu. The servings for the Sunday Roast are plentiful (lots of potatoes!) and the portions are great for sharing. I was impressed with the crunchy pork belly skin, and the lamb was nicely cooked with a tasty garlic salt rub. The vegetable Wellington was on the soggy side due to the moist vegetable filling. Service was the typical European, leave-you-alone-and-we'll-let you-enjoy-your-meal-together. Overall, I'm grateful that Ship Tavern was able to accommodate us so that we could dine in a classic British pub and enjoy Sunday Roast with the family. I knew I only had one chance to have a traditional Sunday Roast in London, so I did my research and chose carefully. The Ship Tavern delivered on every level. The food, ambiance, history, and location really ticked all my boxes. Our party of three, all decided on the beef option. Included with the perfectly cooked, medium rare meat, was a Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes, a medley of root vegetables, gravy, and horseradish sauce. We were all so full when we finished, we almost skipped dessert. Thank goodness we did not give into that foolish urge. The Kraken Rum sticky toffee pudding, topped with a little clotted cream, was amazingly delicious, and worth every calorie. 10/10 read more

The food, on the other hand...I had the sirloin roast lunch. It's been a long time since I ate meat that tough. The duck fat roasted potatoes...well, they were warm, not hot, and tasted like leftovers. The Yorkshire pudding was big, but didn't seem freshly made. I think we must have been among the first diners and the food had been readied in advance. My husband liked his beef Wellington, but it was served suspiciously quickly--people who arrived after we did were informed that Wellington would take 30-40 minutes. A Historic Gem with Superb Food and Service The Ship's Tavern is one of London's culinary and cultural treasures. We usually have traditional favorites like fish and chips, or steak, or chicken pies but this time we tried the lemon sole. My partner and I came specifically for the beef Wellington. When we first walked in the place felt very cozy and romantic. I didn't realize the first floor was a pub until I looked for the toilet and had to squeeze through half of London to get to it. I am not sure how many servers they had in the restaurant, but our server asked us what we wanted to drink and after ten minutes came and asked again so we sat for ten minutes without a drink and even longer before we could order. I always give servers grace since I don't know how busy their night is, but a thing to keep in mind. We ordered the Wellington for two, which was plated very nicely and came with two well-portioned sides. It was a little difficult to eat because the tray it came on was almost as big as the table and I felt I was going to knock my drinks on the ground cutting it. The flavor of the food was okay for me but my partner really liked it. It is worth a try. read more

This place lives up to the reputation. When you walk in it transports you back to 1800s. The restaurant gives that old London vibe. But what makes it all the worth wild is the food. Oh My God..... I want another plate just writing this post . I had the Beef Wellington and it was amazing. Cooked to perfection and the mashed potatoes were delicious. The jus that comes with is is absolutely delicious and makes the Wellington even more succulent. Staff were very nice and sure to ask if we were doing okay. I came here with my mom on a sunday evening for dinner. There were quite a few people in the front of the place drinking however we were able to be seated in the corner to eat. Pros: immediately walking in, I was welcomed with a warm cozy vibe. The place was dim giving it a calm setting which I liked. Our food came out piping hot and considering it was cold outside, it was appreciated. My old fashioned was really good as well. Cons: I can't remember what beef dish my mom got but it was really chewy and hard to eat. I thought my mom was being dramatic but I found myself chewing for almost a minute on one small piece of beef. My pie was just ok but I think that has to do more with my American palate then the pie itself. Overall, I personally would only come here for the coziness vibes to grab drinks with friends. Had a great pint here. They opened the kitchen 10 minutes after official shut down for us, which was both unnecessary but most welcome. We had the chips and tenders, which wouldn't otherwise be terribly exciting except that they were really great. This was a nice and quiet, traditional restaurant above a bustling pub. We had the chicken pie and smoked brisket and both were off the charts good. Our neighbor table ordered a ton of food and ate it all but when the bill arrived had complaints that they did not care for it. They loudly protested the bill and created quiet a stir. The wait staff was trying to manage the situation but was confused because all of the food was eaten. They finally gave discounts and the group left laughing. Such a shame that patrons act this way. It makes it very hard for the staff and the restaurant in general. I wish they would not have rewarded this bad behavior with discounts. But I understand they had to manage the situation. On another note an additional table complained loudly about the 10% service charge and demanded it be taken off. They seemed to not want to tip the service staff. We really enjoyed this restaurant. However, there is a caveat. When we went, December 2018, they had a mouse infestation and with the restaurant full we saw a mouse running about. We talked to the manager and he confirmed the infestation issue. We had already finished eating when we saw the mouse and thought the food was good but this did color things a bit for us. They didn't have the highest sanitation rating at the time and should have tipped us off. Most of our table ordered fish and chips and found it to be really delicious. The oysters were also good. Maybe things have changed since, re mice, as the manager was suggesting it would. If so, we would definitely return. Otherwise, not so sure. read more

This place was our most pleasant surprise on our trip. We were searching everywhere for a full English breakfast before departing London on an afternoon flight. In this area of the city, it was impossible to find a place that was open for sit down breakfast! It was either a hotel restaurant or fancy takeaway Pret a Manger. We spent an hour looking for a breakfast place. The only one we found had a 1 hour wait and was crammed with Japanese tourists. It was 11 a.m. so we popped into this place before heading back to The Rosewood Hotel to pack up and leave for the flight. They weren't serving breakfast but did have the full lunch menu. This place is hidden in an ally way near The Rosewood. It looks kind of dingy and grimy on first impression. We almost left because we thought it looked a bit off. However, we were running late and decided to order ... and we were so glad we did! The menu consisted of traditional British Pub Food staples ... meat pies, fish and chips, burger, etc. They also had a traditional Sunday Roast section with 4 choices of meats. I got this and wow! Everything from the veggies to the Yorkshire pudding to the beef was cooked perfectly and tasted absolutely fresh. The beef was sliced thin and dripping with au jus ... so tender and moist I could cut it with a fork, The pudding was crisp and warm ... maybe a bit less puffy than I like ... but overall very good. The veggies and potatoes were perfectly seasoned and tender while still having a firm texture. The burger was great ... a thick patty cooked well on a fresh bun with thick steak fries (chips). The price was fairly good for what you got (the roast was 15 gbp ... the burger 13 gbp) and the beers were not expensive either. The staff was pretty cold ... they pretty much lacked any kind of warmth at all and put the food down and walked away. Nobody checked up on us or smiled the whole time we were in there. However, they acted the same way to others, so I guess this is just 'English hospitality' at it's finest. Most of the other diners were locals ... so I guess they are doing something right. Make it a point to stop here if you are craving good British food. It is not a tourist trap and it has that old fashioned British Pub feel ... everything is made to look like an old fashioned ship on the inside. A little dark but worth the trip to High Holborn. read more
