Funny name (no pun intended) for this cozy tastefully modern British fare restaurant located in Southwark. I strolled in sans reservation on a Saturday night and luckily was able to be seated (perks of traveling solo?) however recommend making a reservation as the place is quite small in size. Service was friendly and attentive. The staff seems to work together to ensure costumer satisfaction. For beverages, there is a list of speciality or classic cocktails, some beers, limited wines by the glass, and a more extensive wines by the bottle list. I was delighted with my gin based cocktail from their speciality menu. Not sure if this is a London thing or just in my case but water was free... the still seems to be tap as many tables had metal refillable carafes. I chose sparking and was pleasantly surprised when the bill came and I was not charged. The plating of food is beautifully presented. I order the Market fish entree. The one star down is due to the fact I was told it was halibut today as they had a few more before they switched to serving salmon. Once my order came out it was indeed salmon, would have been nice to give me notice in case I wanted to change my order based on the unavailability. We had a couple of missed food moments in London (two-hour wait for Dishoom, Bumpkin Notting Hill closing down, etc.), but we were very glad that the Laughing Gravy came through. A quick walk down Blackfriars Road, Laughing Gravy is a cute restaurant with a beautiful dining area and bar. The menu is offers dishes that infuse the essence of traditional British food with new-style cooking. I decided to start the meal with their spin on Scotch Eggs - with scallops and squid on a bed of arugula and seaweed. Very unique - and the flavors worked very well together! I don't think I'll be able to find another scotch egg like that one. For my main, I got the fowl with mustard sauce and white beans. Savory and just SO good. Every bite. Delicious. Great meal. Certainly the ambience and the overall feel of the place is luring. Summer time lunches watching the world go by on the enclosed patio are amazing. Not quite as amazing as the exceptional staff. But what really shines is the food, from the home made breads with stout and hummius to the smoked scallop and crayfish scotch egg (just get it! :-o) it's all superb. But what really shines is arguably London's best Sunday roast with awards for the gravy alone it's unsurpassable. And therefore unmissable. But you better book a few weeks out. read more

The Laughing Gravy has been the highlight of my trip so far. The starters (scotch eggs & lamb sausage rolls) and dessert (lemon and almond polenta) were fantastic, but the rabbit pappardelle ragout was unvelievable. Great service and drinks, too. This is an absolutely delightful restaurant with great food and service. We came here on a whim based on Yelp recommendations, and boy are we glad we did! This was one of our favorite restaurants that we ate at in London. We knew we had to get some kind of Wellington while in town. The deer wellington here was phenomenal. Wellington can be a difficult dish to cook since it's not easy to get the puff pastry just right, but Laughing Gravy nailed it! The creamy, mocha-chocolatey sauce underneath it was sinfully good. The pork belly was equally delicious. It was cooked in a cherry sauce and had a lot of excellent flavors and textures going on. I wish I lived closer! Stopped in for lunch. It's a nice space and the team working that day were lovely. Very low key. I had a couple of glasses of the Pinot Noir and the superfood salad. I wanted the cheeseburger but I was at the gym in the morning so I was trying to keep it healthy...it's a great salad. The vegetables were perfectly tender and I think I had the most amazing tomato I've ever eaten. Could use a bit more chicken, but a really nice selection of veggies.I didn't know they could be that juicy. read more

I chose this place b/c it was rated so highly on TripAdvisor, and I loved it because it's off the beaten path, certainly away from the uber-touristy parts of London. I was looking for a neighborhood feel, locals-type experience and food made with love. So, the atmosphere and service lived up to what I wanted. It was great to get out of the chaos of central London. The food, however, was just ok. Like Nish D. said, it was not memorable. This is a nice place for a get-together with friends over some apps, wine and cheese; but if you want outstanding food that's reflective of local flare, this placed disappointed. I was determined that I'd have some type of wellington in London while I was there. So I resorted to Yelp and found this little cute place a few metro stations away from us. Service was great. Food was delicious. I must say, though, I felt little stupid about my mild obsession about having wellington in London. It was nothing special. It tasted like eating a good piece of steak with a pot pie crust. Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen must have made my expectation too high for this particular dish. They did have amazing Mac N Cheese. My bf who'd pick mac and cheese as one of this top comfort food said Laughing Gravy's one is one of his favorites. I think that says a lot. The place is pricey (but I guess 3 pound sigh tells you that). For two dishes plus a desert to share, one glass of wine, one cocktail came out to over 73 pounds (and at this time the exchange rate is about 1.56). And I didn't know that in England they add on "optional" 12.5% service charge to the bill. I thought in European countries the price you see on the menu already reflects the service charge built into it. Let's just say that I wasn't expecting that additional amount in the bill. Husband and I shared a scotch egg and it was (ehh), for dinner he had the Wellington and I just had a burger with truffle fries. The Laughing Gravy is one of those gems. A small pub-style restaurant located just a stone's throw away from Southwark tube station offers a really delicious British food for affordable prices. Beetroot cooked in three different ways was a pleasant refreshing starter. Followed by an absolutely divine Sunday roast: tender meat marinated in Kernel Porter beer served with a lovely gravy (it wasn't laughing though, but made me smile). It was unquestionably one of the best roasts I had in London! Finishing off the meal with a mouth-watering dessert of chocolate filled of caramel and shortbread. All dishes were appetizingly plated up. The premises are small but cosy (with a few tables outdoors), plenty of light coming from a glass roof inside. A piano in the end of the room with an open sheet music book of an English sonata is a nice touch. Friendly service and more than reasonable prices. Will visit again? Came here for dinner. We started with a scallop scotch egg and lamb dumplings. The scotch egg was so delicious and juicy. Unlike a traditional scotch egg, but a wonderful take on it. Friends and I (party of three) walked in around 8:30 on a Thursday night after seeing an appealing list of menu options and were told it would be 45 minutes to an hour - if not longer. We thought, fine, let's go across the street, have a few beers, explore the neighborhood options and if all else fails, go back because, hey the kitchen stays open until 00:00. So around 21:45 my mate goes in and asks for a table of three if it's not too late - clearly there was room to seat us. Unfortunately, the staffer said "yes, unfortunately it's too late to seat anyone." We were told it'd be an hour wait, so that's what we did - and still, we were refused service. Completely unacceptable. Not only to refuse the business from three hungry lads, but also the fact we'd already shown ourselves once before and expressed interest in eating - leaves an awful impression. It was amazing. We looked at another place in the area but decided on this place because of the diverse selection of meats in their dinner menu. Came in just before 8 - could tell the suggestion was to make a reservation but tables around us have gone empty for the duration of our dinner. Wait staff did a great job helping me pick a wine based on my preferences. My fiancé had the veal Wellington at recommendation over the pot roast. I had the Rabbit. If you are shy about getting outside the chicken steak pork proteins then this is a great place to try some game. It's well prepared and will help you develop an appreciation. Staff has been pleasant and attentive through our our meal but no bothersome. Atmosphere is very clean - a light bright loft apartment. Great mix of brick walls and pretty lighting. We are sitting in the middle under a frosted glass conservatory ceiling. Casts a very relaxing "outdoor" glow. Not too loud - which I appreciate and I'm the only one in here on my phone which is refreshing these days. Everyone is engaging with their table mates. We stopped in late on a Friday evening with no reservation. The host was welcoming and friendly and let us know that a table would be coming up soon as the first batch of early diners were finishing up. We didn't wait too long before we were seated. The restaurant is cosy but with clean lines and with a conservatory roof inside that adds a light, airy feel. Within a few minutes we were seated. The British menu is full of appeal and interest. For starters I chose the scotch egg with smoked rabbit and seafood vinagrette which was just fantastic. Wonderfully presented too. For mains it was butter poached and braised guinea fowl with a chicken, cep and truffle hash and pureed carrots, samphire and ransoms. Wow, this dish sounded great from the menu description and more than lived up to the expectation. This is super competent cooking and a chef who really knows what he is doing. Every component of the dish was perfection and the sum was greater than the parts and guinea fowl has always been a favourite of mine. Here it was heaven. Would have loved to try the deserts also which looked tempting but will have to wait for next time. The staff were great. Food came in just the right time and was served deftly from friendly staff. Love this place!! Have been here 3 or 4 times now, and have never been disappointed. We had a 9pm reservation this time to celebrate our anniversary, and it was a great time, as the atmosphere was fantastic - just the right amount of buzz and life, while still feeling very intimate. For starter, I had the poached egg and asparagus with lemon sauce, light, delicate and great balance of flavours, I only wish my yolk was a touch more runny. My partner had the venison croquettes, which although on the heavier side for a starter, the flavour was deep and mouth-wateringly fantastic! My main was the scallop dish, perfectly prepared, the texture was silky with a perfect sear on the outside. Beautifully presented on a herb mash, with a red wine jus accompaniment. For pudding, I had the strawberry, chestnut and elderflower crumble - possibly the best crumble I've ever had! Perfect balance of sweet and salty, and the scoop of pistachio ice cream was a great cooling flavour to go along with it. As always, the service was attentive, professional, yet relaxed and unpretentious. We will definitely be back again, thanks LG! read more

I just have to love this place. It's more like a restaurant than a pub. I'm saying that because of the amazing food they offer. Go and try the pork belly starter - it comes with apple puree and black pudding. The combination is amazing and prepares you for the mains that are out of this world. The dishes teeter really close to perfection despite the place being "just a pub". Went here for Sunday lunch with some friends. The area is the place's main drawback, as there isn't really much around, so its not a place you'll find yourself by chance. That didn't seem to hold the place back, though, as the place was full, so obviously, making reservations is useful/necessary. Menu is good, with everything from cocktails and mocktails, various starters, mains, dessert, brunch, and a good wine list covering Italy, France, Spain, Australia, US, Chile, and more. We had the Sunday roast, completely with Yorkshire Puddings, and it was absolutely delicious, and well-presented. Roast was tender, juicy and perfectly cooked. Gravy was on of the best I've had anywhere, and the Yorkshire pudding had just the right combination of chewy base and flaky top. Stopped in yesterday for lunch and ended up returning for dessert! Lunch: Somerset brie glazed Portobello mushrooms and spinach with roast Heritage vegetables, braised leek and fennel, butternut squash and artichoke. Delicious. A smidge more salty than I like my veg, but everything was nicely roasted, and the cheese with the mushroom was a winning combination. I walked around for a few hours and couldn't stop thinking about how good the dessert menu looked, so I popped back in to get some. Ended up being early for the dinner seating, but the hostess let me hang out and read for 25 minutes. Speaking of reading - they have a library of books around the bar area. fun! Dessert: Honey-roasted opal plum, peach, madeira and almond crumble with nougat ice cream . REALLY lovely pudding. The crumble topping was nice - sweet and crunchy, but not too sugary. The ice cream was ok but not exceptional. But I am from New England, land of creamery ice cream, so it takes a lot to impress me on that front. Boring. Food and service were fine, but on the whole the restaurant is a bit 'meh'....nothing stands out, nothing special that makes me want to go back. A choice of only 2 starters, of which neither sounded tempting but decided to try them as, well there wasn't much choice for anything else, was trying to be optimistic but they weren't great. Even if i was in the area, I would try something new over going back here. It was just a bit too average, without any buzz or quirkiness to make it interesting or a memorable experience. This better than average gastro pub in Southwark tries to keep its options open by having a somewhat informal front pub area, with a more restaurant-like rear (white tablecloths and all). The menu is also usually split between a pub lunch menu and a full restaurant menu. The food is good, but nothing spectacular and the service is sometimes a little slack. read more

This restaurant manages to serve inventive food and excellent cocktails while never feeling overly fussy or pretentious. Everyone loved their food, raved about the cocktails and appreciated the recommendations from the great staff. If I could give zero stars I would. We walked in at 9:20 pm. We were starving. There were plenty of open seats but we were told, "sorry we're closed". We asked what time they close and he said 10. So I'm not sure how long before they close you have to show up but, whatever... if 40 minutes isn't enough, then I guess my money isn't good enough for them. read more

Came here from a suggestion by a local friend, on a Friday night I had already changed by into my American attire (Cargo pants and hoodie) and asked for a table for 1, thought they would turn me away because i didn't have a reservation (and my American dress), however no issue at all got a nice table. Having looked at the reviews and menu ahead of time i already knew i wanted the Beat salad and Wellington so I ordered both. I started with a half craf of some great wine suggested by the waiter. The beet salad was the best ever, their combination of goat cheese, a beet sauce and the beets was fantastic. The Wellington did not disappoint, properly cooked served over a mash and gravy. We were staying in London near Marble Arch, so the bus ride to The Laughing Gravy in Southwark was a bit of a venture, but my wife, son and I convinced my wife's parents and my aunt to make the trek to this quiet and somewhat off-the-beaten path location. Our meal turned out to be among the best we've ever had. The service was prompt but not pandering. Food was reasonably priced, excellently presented, and tested fantastic -- across the board, from the asparagus starter to the super food salad to the three-cheese roasted cauliflower macaroni. Ambiance was subdued, wth non-overbearing and pleasant music. Fortunately, we left room for dessert, which was extremely creatively presented and tasted even better. The restaurant also offers a library, from which you can select a book in exchange for a small donation. I highly recommend The Laughing Gravy if you are looking for an affordable, creative, well-prepared meal in a pleasant setting with outstanding service. read more

My girlfriend and I were looking for a place to grab some dinner and happened to come across the Laughing Gravy through Google Maps as it was close to the hotel we were staying at (Tune Hotel). From the outside, it didn't look like much, but when you walked in, it was beautiful! Clean, friendly staff, great food, and that "at home" feel. We loved how the food was delivered on the wooden plates and the glass bottles for beverages. It was a great feel, reasonably priced and delicious food, highly recommend it! read more

We had some friends visiting from America so we booked a table for dinner. I had the elderflower mojito which was very enjoyable. I ordered the heritage beetroot as a starter. The beetroot itself was lovely, however if you are going to put caviar on someone's plate please list it on the menu as not everyone wants to eat fish eggs. My review would be 4 or 5 stars if this didn't happen. Next I had the Mac and cheese which was very delicious. The portion size was huge and I ended up taking some home with me. My partner got the venison Wellington which he enjoyed although the pastry was a bit soggy. Everyone around the table enjoyed their food and it seems the sea bass was the favourite of the night. The onion crisps on top and the crab champ went down a treat. Overall the evening was enjoyable, the staff were friendly and the food was nice. read more
