Haddock and chips
Laura W.

The location is great-right near BrewDog. Although they do have drinks there, I'd recommend BrewDog first. Anyways, the quality of this fish and chips was my preferred of the two places we tried. The portions are very large to boot. My husband and I each ordered a fish and chips meal-his with cod and mine with haddock. Instead of mushy peas, we asked for double chips but were told they can't do that (ok.....). The fish was flaky and the batter was crisp. The chips were hot, fresh cut, and crisp. They lacked flavor though. They sell extra sauces so we tried the chipotle mayonnaise, which was superior (IMO) to the tarter sauce. It was delicious with both the chips and fish. I'd suggest ordering 2. The atmosphere is very casual in that you order at the counter and pay with your food being delivered to your table later. They also do a brisk takeaway business. I was satisfied with our meal here and found the price point to be reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I'd definitely suggest visiting if you are in the area and looking for fish and chips!

Delicious! My friends and I were looking for a good fish n chips place (typical tourists that we are) and we came across Kerbisher and Malt on yelp! It's a really nice and simple ambiance. You can choose from a variety of different fish and cook them in different ways. Cooking methods can be grilled or fried (in original breadcrumbs or matzo) and you'll get chips too! There are a few different sauces available. The fish is really moist and soft inside a crisp crust. Less oily than other places I tried for fish n chips in London. Definitely recommend this for fish n chips in London! A little pricy but worth it.

Very, very good chippy near Hammersmith. I don't usually eat fish and chips when I'm in London, but I was craving some comfort food when I was stuck in the rain. Kerbisher & Malt was nearby, and I'd heard good things about them. I was happy I did. The chips were excellent - not too greasy, but crunchy on the outside (almost like they were twice fried) and creamy on the inside. Mmmm. For the fish, I opted for the cod. Not greasy nor overly salted. Practically perfect- moist, flaky fish. I was also very impressed by their housemade tartar sauce. I also heard they brew their own beer. Although I didn't get to try it this time around, I'm definitely pairing their house brew with some haddock when I'm back in town.

The gold standard for fish and chips, served in a casual restaurant setting. Quality sides made on site, mashed peas, pickled onion rings...large portions, friendly atmosphere.

Fish (cod) and chips

I've been trying fish n chips all over London during my stay and this place is up there with the absolute best of 'em - I again went with cod n chips to play it safe but it seems like haddock or halibut is pretty popular/trendy too. The fish was crispy and cooked to a beautiful golden brown - it wasn't too oily either like some other places, probably the best fried fish that I've had yet! The fries were as good as it gets, crisp and soft. The kicker for them is they make their tartar sauce in-house and I can't quite put my finger on it but I believe they use an egg yolk batter base (I should've asked!) which made for an intriguing taste.

The standard for Fish and Chips! First off a big shout out to Robyn J for the suggestion! According to the people I was working with this place is posh for fish add chips however to the tourist it cost the same as any other establishment that they would visit for their fish and chip fix... This place is well of the beaten path for most tourists since there is nothing really to see in Hammersmith but I promise if you make the trek to this place you won't be disappointed. First off they offer 4 different types of fish (I had the haddock). It's served as a massive filet SKIN OFF (as it should be in my opinion) and was light and fluffy. Add malt vinegar and a bit of their homemade tartar sauce and BAM! Winner winner fish dinner! They did not have any beer on tap BUT they had meantime lager which made a good pairing for the dinner... Hands down the best of the 4 places I had fish an chips on this trip...

Our Air B&B host recommended Kerbisher & Malt for fish & chips. I hadn't had it in over a decade, but I like pretty much anything fried, so I knew I was guaranteed to eat whatever was put in front of me. I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was!! I'm ashamed to say I ate it all. (If you've been reading my other reviews, you'll notice a trend.) I had the battered haddock with chips, and everything was cooked so perfectly. The fish is cooked to order, so it was super fresh and not greasy at all. (I'm looking back at my picture and can't believe I ate the whole thing - the piece of fish was HUGE!) I had it with tartare sauce and a bottle of cider. As simple as this dish is, I don't think it could have gotten any better than that. K&M itself has sort of a kitchen / cafeteria vibe, with bright lights and a clean, casual setting. I wouldn't necessarily come here for a date night, but I would come running for their fish & chips again for sure.

Meal: Dinner, dine in All Ratings out of 10: Quality of food: 8 Food to Spend Value: 8 Quality of Service: 8 Overall Rating: 8 I had to try true British fish and chips at least once while in London. After talking with a few folks, I received a lot of recommendations for Kerbisher & Malt. So for a mid-week dinner in the Hammersmith area, I headed over to see what I thought. There were 5 different kinds of fish on the menu, several which I was familiar with (haddock and cod), and a few I was not. I decided to try Plaice, battered of course, with chips and a side of mushy peas and bread and butter. The fish had a flaky texture to it and was quite juicy, and the batter on the fish was very well done. British beer battering is definitely different from a lot of fish and chips found stateside, but I enjoyed the flavor and texture quite a bit. The mushy peas were not my cup of tea, but I was glad I tried them, as they were prepared well. The fries that came with the fish were quite good and are fresh cut in house. You could taste the freshness, and the double frying really did them justice. Kerbisher & Malt is unassuming from the outside and fairly small inside. You order your food first, find a table, and they bring it out to you when it is ready. The prices were very reasonable, the portion sizes good, and the quality also quite good. I personally prefer fish and chips I get in coastal cities in the US to the British variety, but even so I really enjoyed my meal and would definitely return when back in London.

This is the beer battered cod with chips (and a Coke). Fish was great - but the chips could use a little something more.

I agree with the other user reviews here - the fish is absolutely fantastic. The chips - while they're quite good and taste better than your run of the mill bar chips - are only "good". Their sauce selection is worthwhile and their drink selection is nice. Though the chips fell just a bit flat, the experience overall was marvelous. Friendly staff and prompt service. Highly recommended for anyone searching for the quintessential fish and chips experience while in London!

Cod and chips, Calamari and Whitebait. All done perfectly.

A little bit pricey compared to your local chippy but WELL worth it. Fantastic fish and chips, whitebait and crispy squid. Easily the best I've had in London. READ THAT AGAIN! Great location and friendly staff as well. Do yourself a favour and spend a few bob more than usual on a great dinner in Hammersmith.

Best fish & chips I've ever had in London hands down!!! Staff were very friendly and accommodating with our children. We will definitely seek this place out on our next family romp in London.

Excellent fish and chips. Definitely recommend to others. You'll have a great time here. But do you get here early. There is limited seating. Enjoy yourself. They have great chips. They have good fish. They don't charge you extra for grilling, frying, battering. We did try the haddock, cod and the seafood Fishcake. We also tried the chips with sweet chili sauce. Yummy.

I suppose the nearest thing we have is takeaway chips, and this was exactly what I was in the mood for one freezing cold February night when I was walking home. As luck would have it I spotted Hooked, which looked a bit more upmarket than your typical fish n chips place, but was similarly reasonably priced. For £1.80 I was given a huge plate of freshly cooked chips and was able to sit in at one of the tables in the (very clean) restaurant area at no extra cost! Free ketchup too. The chips, whilst not the best I'd ever had, did taste fresh and were nice and chunky too, which is the way I feel all chips should be. The staff were very friendly and welcoming too. A great spot for some quick, cheap and hot grub!

Gluten free fish and chips- wow!…read more We came here after learning about their dedicated gluten free fryer and menu items. The takeaway line was pretty steady but we ate in. The server was great with our kids and gave some sound advice on menu options. We had the haddock and cod fish and chips, and the kids had fish bites - which ended up being a bit more substantial. If we go back we'll choose those. The staff was really friendly and gave us space. Not everyone may appreciate that, but the pace was perfect for us. We would have liked a bit larger drink menu, but the current offerings work for the menu.

Once we were seated and ordered, no one really checked in, but we asked if we needed something. Ambiance: Cute outdoor seating. In door seating was okay. Reservations get to go into a back room which seemed nicer. Lovely side street in a crazy busy popular area. It's a solid 4.5 stars for what it is because the food was so good. I'd return. I had a real jones for a true British fish and chips meal. Since we weren't thrilled with the hotel's recommendation, we started to wander. We came across two Bobbies and thought, "Eureka! Surely they will know of a good fish and chips place". The answer to the question, however, was the start of the great dinner adventure. "There's no proper fish and chips around here", said the first cop. "You know, they are disappearing from all over Britain", said the second. The first cop went on to say, "If you want a proper [he pronounced it as "prawper", of course] fish and chips, it's pretty far; about 15 minutes from here. You'd have to take the number 74 or 430 nightbus. But that's a proper fish and chips shop, which is a dying breed here. You go down two blocks to the light, turn to the right and take the 74 or 430 bus through two roundabouts to the third stop. The shop is called The Anchor and it's a proper fish and chips, all right. Just next to the toy store". So off we went, down the street to find the nightbus. I had a vision of the Harry Potter movie in my head, of course. But the traffic was heavy, so the real bus wasn't going very fast. We were clearly off the tourist map and in a residential area of London. After a bit, we weren't sure if we had passed it or what, so we asked if anyone on the upper deck with us knew of The Anchor - no one had. But they knew the toy store, and that was the next stop, so we clambered down and jumped off at the next stop. There it was, not a block off. The owners (Maurice and his wife) were delightful people who really cared about us, taking the time for a conversation and just being super friendly. The meal was just the best in comfort food - tasty, warm, and satisfying. Prices were reasonable. I plan to return.
