Masters Superfish is a fantastic spot for an authentic London fish and chips experience. I say authentic because that is what one of our tour guides told us when asking for a authentic London fish joint. The portions are incredibly generous--the fish is fresh, flaky, and served with a light, crispy batter that isn't overly greasy. I really enjoyed the traditional touches, like the complimentary bread, butter, and pickled appetizers that come with the meal. This F&C place was conveniently located by our hotel and was opened late. The portions are very generous, the decor simple, and the staff friendly. This place was recommended for fish and chips in the area we we staying in so we came to check it out! It was on Waterloo Road, walking distance from the train station. It's a small chippy but the portions were huge! First we were served some pickles and cold shrimp and bread which came with the meal. We had the haddock and cod and like I said, the pieces were big. The batter was light and not overly greasy- the fish was tender. The chips were also big and hot. So much food! We could've easily shared one plate. The staff there were very nice and friendly too. Bookmarked by a friend on the trip with me, because it was very close to our hotel as we knew we would want some fish 'n' chips at some point during our time in London. So one night in between our planned tours and folks splitting off to go to shows or boat tours or drinks at pubs...a small group of us headed in to Masters Superfish for our dinner. It looked more casual than it ended up being, sort of. We were told to seat ourselves (no one else was there yet) and the menu was on chalkboards on the walls around the space. A bit difficult to read, but sustainable and easy to update and change. We all got some version of fish and chips, you are able to select the type of fish you want...haddock, cod, etc. As well as all ordering a beer or cider. I am not sure if it was because we all got "meals" but we were also provided bread and butter, as well as some appetizer-y type things....pickled veg and cold whole shrimp. I tried it all...not what I would have ordered myself, but it appeared to be free so why not try it? Our main food came and we were ready to dig in. The portions were HEARTY and for a second time on this trip, I lamented the absence of a usable fridge and microwave in my hotel room! What was surprising for most of us was that the fried fish filets still had skin on one side. I didn't mind, I often eat skin-on fish. My companions were taken by surprise. So...be aware, I suppose. Hubby verified the pictures on Yelp and yes we finally found you!! My husband and I was reminiscing on how we had the fish and chips and how we loved it so much!! We checked into our hotel and found that this place was highly recommended by locals, yelp, and the hotel staff so rushed over there at 3pm. They close at 330 but were nice enough to serve us even though they were only open for 30 minutes. I ordered the lunch special of classic fish and chips with a side of coleslaw. My friend ordered a mustard fish and chips, and the other ordered grilled fish and chips! First, they bring you incredibly soft bread and whole shrimp as an appetizer. I dont really eat bread, but it was so soft and good I ate probably 3 pieces. The shrimp was good too but being a whole shrimp its a lot of work. My fish was huge and still had the skin on it even though it was battered! The fries were good too but their slaw and tartar sauce really pushed the place over the edge for me. It was by far the best fish and chips I have ever had, even from another place in london too that was highly recommended. Really good food at affordable prices with great service makes this a winner. This seems like a place that is frequented by locals which made it even better. I had the "normal" (fried) haddock while my wife ordered grilled haddock. Both orders consisted of a huge piece of fish and a large serving of chips fresh out of the fryer and piping hot. For the table we also were served a bowl of prawns, some assorted pickles and a basket of bread. These extras were included as part of the dinner. Our server also brought out bowls with tartar sauce and ketchup before our food arrived. Fried or grilled, the haddock was excellent. Fresh and perfectly cooked either way. Best of all is the location being just a few steps away from our hotel. I will be back, maybe this same trip but certainly on a future visit. read more

Stopped in for dinner after a day of sightseeing and touristy stuff and my short walk from Waterloo station was well reward. Excellent fish and chips in a cheap and cheerful local shop. Not a large place, and there are as many tables crammed in as possible (it's not midtown Manhattan tight, but it's close). Dinner service is a brisk business, with a mix of locals and out of towners chowing down, along with a constant stream of carry out orders. I had the Superbites (Cod, Plaice, Huss, and Haddock). I'd be lying if I said I could tell the difference between them, but they were all delicious. Crispety crunchity fluffy coating with delicate and juicy fish inside. No hint of funkiness or anything that would indicate fish that wasn't fresh. A big serving a chips came on the side and I also had mushy peas and curry sauce (for dipping). Second time here, just as good as the first (a few years ago). Meal starts out with a basket of bread and butter along with a few (cold) boiled shrimp. You can peel and eat 'em while you wait for the main dish to arrive! A very reasonably priced cod fish-n-chips meal for around £10 consisting of a large fried fish fillet, chips, mushy peas and a soft drink. Their tartar sauce is tangy and pairs great with the freshly fried cod. Chips were cooked perfectly. We left feeling very full and satisfied for the rest of our tour of the city. I typically look for hole-in-the-wall spots to get fish & chips when I'm in London. When you see locals, particularly road crew workers, in these spots, you know you're going to get quality for a good price. This was a "fully licensed" hole in the wall with lots of superlatives in the title, so I was hopeful. I was a little apprehensive when nearly all the tables were empty at noon, but I hoped that since it was a weekend, workers wouldn't be out so that would explain all the empty tables. I should have known that when I saw the giant map with pins marking where people originated to enjoy their fish as well as all of the foreign currency on the walls that this was a joint that fed off of people passing through, not necessarily a local point of preference. I grabbed a seat and placed an order for f&c with mushy peas. Food was brought out super fast! Like, freaky fast. Beside my order was a small basket of bread and butter and a small bowl with 3 prawns. I don't know how to attack the prawns, so they went to waste, but everything else was sampled. The fish wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't among the best I've had. It wasn't exceptionally flaky and the battering tasted bland. They do bring out a vat of tartar sauce, though, so that added a good bit of flavor. The chips were inconsistent, some of them limp while others were so crunchy that I was worried about my molars. Service started out great, but dropped off precipitously after the food was delivered. Not terrible, but I don't think I'll be making it back to Master's on my next trip. read more

Master Superfish is delicious and you get a lot for your money! The last time I was in London, I tried either really cheap or really pricey fish & chips places... so it was always not great or simply overpriced. I think Master Superfish is a good compromise. Don't expect a cutesy shop or anything like that though... the interior is more like a school cafeteria. There's probably going to be be a bit of a wait for your food but it's worth it for the huge portions and tasty fish. Prawns are complimentary, as well as bread & butter. We got the Master's special (cod) and it was 9.50 and came with plenty of chips. I also ordered the calamari appetizer for 4.50. When the food came, I was astonished at how humongous the portions were. This was no "multiple-piece" meal. The cod was one huge filet that took up the majority of the plate. My friend ordered something similarly sized and the two of us only managed to finish maybe less than half of what we'd ordered. The fish was fresh and very tasty, though after a while I got sick of the fried batter and started to peel a bit of it off. Definitely worth a try! read more

We ordered one plate of the fish and chips and one of the fried calamari. The calamari was cooked perfectly; tender and not chewy at all. Also, considering how large the portions were, the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant and its decor were nothing special, and the servers aren't out of their way friendly, but they don't need to be. Masters Superfish serves the best fish and chips I've ever had in my life. I know it's that's a bold statement but it's true. The fish&chips are served fresh and crispy. The added shrimp was also a nice surprise to my meal. The restaurant itself is slightly above hole-in-the-wall. There were large parties, families sharing a meal, and also folks eating solo. It seems to be a place where locals come by. And if I remember correctly, currencies from around the world are taped onto the wall. For some reason, I can't find this restaurant on Yelp when I search it's name in London. Luckily I was able to find it from past searches, but there must be an error because it says it's located in London but the maps pinpoint it in Paris. Odd. Masters Superfish was my first experience with proper British fish & chips, and I have to say- it was delicious! The fried cod (the obvious star) was extra crispy on the outside, while the fish remained nice a moist on the inside. The lunch portion was served with fries, chilled shrimp, pickled onions and dill pickles. They offer several sides which you can add to your order including coleslaw and mashed peas. The restaurant itself is quite small, but filled with lots of seating. The overall feel is not of fine dining, but of good family memories made together over years of visiting a staple establishment. Please indulge me for a moment while I post this public apology: I'm sorry, nice lady sitting in the Eurostar waiting room and quiet guy next to me on the train. And I apologize for how gross it must have been watching me devour them in front of you, hastily package them back up to run to the train, then finish the feast in my seat. See, I had to carry them in the Tube across the city and just barely made it to the train in time - and I couldn't wait any longer to eat. It would be a travesty to let food this delicious get cold. But know this: if we had actually spoken about it, you would have known that it was so worth it. For Yelpers, take note that it is much, much easier to find this place from the Lambeth North station than from Waterloo. At the Take-Away counter, you can actually watch them cook the food. It is literally "grab cod filet, bread it, then immediately fry it". £5.00 for the regular size cod and chips in a paper bag. None of the sides and condiments mentioned in the sit-down reviews are included but they really aren't necessary. Three different people tried to take my order. While they were rather... abrupt... in their approach, they seemed to sincerely appreciate the business. The kind of people who look you directly in the eye when they speak. Left a very positive impression. Fish was incredibly delicious, perfect combination of the fresh fish flavor with the saltiness of the breading. Chips were some sort of sweet variety of potato. 5 stars for the food, 1 star for the rude service, but it's sort of our fault. Disclaimer: I don't have much experience eating in London, and am not used to separate lines for takeaway vs dining in. Upon entering the building, there's a small counter with a chalkboard menu and a door off to the right that opens into a room with seating. As a naive American, I assumed that customers order at the counter, and then take their food to the adjoining room to eat. We ordered the Master's special which was posted on the chalkboard and 10 minutes later we were handed a hot steaming bundle of freshly fried fish and chips, wrapped in paper, with the grease just starting to ooze out. We took the bundle and entered the dining room, but the guy behind the counter yelled at us to get out, saying that our order was for takeaway only. We pleaded ignorance and offered to pay the difference, but the dude shook his head and pointed towards the door. It was pouring rain when we arrived, but fortunately, it stopped. We stood outside in the 45 degree (8 Celcius?) cold and ate the fish and chips. I have a big appetite, but I have to say that a single order was enough to fill both of us up. It was an enormous amount of grease, but the fish was super flaky and tasty, and the chips were large and crisp. Perhaps the best fish and chips I've ever had.
