As a table, we shared a few goodies to get us started, both a fried calamari and an order of onion rings. The calamari was cooked in rings similar in size to the onion rings! They were plump and had a very textured crunchy exterior, served with tartar sauce. The thick cut onion rings were piping hot and also super crunchy. For the fish-n-chips, each couple shared two different versions, one cod and one haddock. We liked each, the cod was thicker and meatier while the haddock probably tasted better but was thinner. Small restaurant under the bridge not far from the train station. 3 of us ordered the cod fish and chips, and one ordered a grill fish (why do that?!). Not what I was expecting based on the fun name, but a perfectly respectable chippy. Inside isn't disco themed, loud or hip - as another reviewer said, it feels like a very normal local restaurant. I asked my friend from London if she could recommend a fish and chips spot and she said her friends rolled their eyes, but this was one of the spots they mentioned. We were planning to seek out a more traditional pub, but happened upon this one across from where we were doing a bike tour and felt like it was meant to be. They fried the fish, which is all locally sourced, upon order so it was hot and fresh. My son and I each ordered the cod and the portions were huge. We definitely could have split it if we ate all of the chips. Fresh tartar sauce, instead of the Heinz packet, would have topped it off nicely. We were looking forward to our first English fish and chips in London but unfortunately my mum wasn't feeling well so we got ours to go. We specifically asked for well done fries and ended up getting really underdone fries which were not good. A tablespoon's worth of tartar sauce is offered for each piece of fish, whether small or large, or else it's £.50 per packet. We requested ketchup which was squirted on the side of our containers. Vinegar was also put directly on the fish and chips instead of being offered in packets on the side. Not the best way to serve fish when it's being taken-out and eaten 20-30 mins later. Makes for soggy food. Have never been to a restaurant that's been so stingy with the condiments. Customer service was a bit gruff and inattentive. It appears no proper system in place for remembering specific orders and requests. Probably wouldn't return. read more

Very nice spot near Waterloo! The fish and chips were good, though a bit light on salt. Calamari rings were super tasty, and the shrimp scampi could have used a bit more flavour. First and only fish and chips in London. After enjoying the spectacular view at the London eye, we were ready for something to fill our belly. We knew the options nearby were gonna be tourist trappy so we figured goingn to a restaurant that was a 10 minute walk would be a better move. As you walk in, you can almost feel the authenticity of the place. Decor was simple, no frills. You get greeted and seated, and they take your order. Everyone in our group got the cod fish and chips. We got a very generous portion of food. One order of the large could be enough for two people to share. The fish tasted fresh. Despite the huge portion, all of us finished our fish - a testament to how good it was. The chips we felt like could have been seasoned a little more - but it may just be our Texan palates. I did not check this... and I only got here cause we were trying to find food and basically almost all restaurants nearby our hotel were closed. On a Monday night @ 9pm. This was near the beginning of our 3wk 1750mi driven adventure on the island, and we would soon find out... this was going to be an ongoing problem. But anyway, back to business... yeah so we were just walking and walking, passing closed after closed, even sitting down at a pub and being told they stopped serving food......... even asking people if anything's open--no one knew. But then, this mirage appeared.... Is it the 2nd best? I dunno, but it was definitely good: 1. Haddock Large £19.95 "originals, served with chips": First off, the fries are SUPER creamy. We will find out this is how most "chips" are here--guess the potatoes are a bit different on the island. As for the fish, the coating is light yet crunchy/crisp. The flesh is nicely cooked, but I think naturally stiffer than the standard cod. Appears juicy. I just wish the coating was thicker. 8/10 2. Beef & Onion Pie £10.95 "savories, served with chips": Yeah, definitely better than anything I've had in America, not that this is a popular dish at home. The crust was buttery, and the stew inside was thick and flavorful, with excellent gravy. 8/10 3. Heinz Beans £3.50: Straight from the can, as it is named. 4. This eatery is a hidden gem in London. Anyone going to the London Eye, or anywhere near there should most definitely stop in for some of the freshest, most delectable fish and chips in the city. Flakey and moist on the inside, and golden and crispy on the outside, this perfectly prepared Cod came with a generous serving of delicious chips that were also perfectly cooked. The family that own and run this restaurant could not have been more welcoming, helpful, and friendly. Our waitperson, Kaan gave us good suggestions. He made us feel so welcomed, and checked on us throughout our meal. I have dined at many places around the world , and this simple, unpretentious little restaurant that does what it does do well and with pride, impressed me very much. If I lived here I would most definitely frequent this place often. So go and enjoy the fantastic fish chips for lunch or dinner, and for the friendly service. So 2nd time in London and decided to try fish and chips. Chose off Google maps something that was above 4 stars. Google has them down at 4.5 and Yelp at 4.1. Funny thing is that it didn't seem all that different from what I've had in the U.S. The one thing that was highly different was that they fry the fish with the skin on. That was unusual for all of us. There are 3 choices between cod, rock, and haddock. We chose cod for the more healthy choice. It was just ok. For a piece of fish that is roughly 12 inches in length and about 2 inches at the widest point, you get 1 packet of tartar sauce. I guess I could have asked for more, but it really wouldn't have changed the scoring. Chips were slightly larger than Red Robin type fries. Again nothing mind-blowing or life changing about them. Also tried the onion rings and those were more soft-breaded than the States. Overall, okay meal. Inside has several tables and service was friendly. Pay at the front when you're done. read more

We went here based on all of the good reviews. We ordered one medium cod with chips and one plaice with onion rings (they let us substitute). The plaice was as big as a hand! The chips are like steak cut fries so they're not crispy. The batter was kind of heavy on the plaice so that we ended up with a discard pile. The onion rings are not made to order (likely frozen). Good flavor on the fish. Not the best fish and chips we've had. No beer. They accept cash. Clean but tiny bathrooms. Mind the step if you need to use one. read more
