So 2nd time in London and decided to try fish and chips. Chose off Google maps something that was above 4 stars. Google has them down at 4.5 and Yelp at 4.1. Funny thing is that it didn't seem all that different from what I've had in the U.S. The one thing that was highly different was that they fry the fish with the skin on. That was unusual for all of us. There are 3 choices between cod, rock, and haddock. We chose cod for the more healthy choice. It was just ok. For a piece of fish that is roughly 12 inches in length and about 2 inches at the widest point, you get 1 packet of tartar sauce. I guess I could have asked for more, but it really wouldn't have changed the scoring. Chips were slightly larger than Red Robin type fries. Again nothing mind-blowing or life changing about them. Also tried the onion rings and those were more soft-breaded than the States. Overall, okay meal. Inside has several tables and service was friendly. Pay at the front when you're done. read more

Basically the epitome of a hole-in-the-wall fish & chips joint you'd envision a commoner in London eating at, with the added bonus of being located under a bridge for extra character! The menu is a bit limited, basically what you'd expect they specialize in, but the portions are insanely huge. A nice humble meal before a bougie show at the National Theatre. Cod & Chips: Quite dense and meaty for a white fish, which is why I love cod. Their batter was both thick and crispy. And they managed to fry it while not overcooking the fish (hence, not rubbery in texture at all). An overly generous portion of chips, which I couldn't finish. But they were all thick and crispy too, with a nice moist inside. Essentially begging for malt vinegar. Haddock & Chips: Many similarities to the Cod & Chips, except the fish itself (obviously). Was thinner, but not too thin. Had a lighter flakier texture. Was actually a good contrast to the cod, so highly recommend splitting the two dishes between to people. Mushy Peas: Tasted less fresh than the mushy peas I've had elsewhere. Like were they from a can perhaps? Or maybe it was just that they were so mushed they had the texture of baby food instead of a few pleasant pea chunks interspersed. read more

Best fish and chips we had on our 6 day trip to London. Yelp had hours wrong- said it opened at 11am though they open each day at noon. We had the medium cod and my father in law had the beef and onion pie. Both were delicious. Fish was not overbattered but came out hot and crisp. During my brief time in London I wanted to find an amazing place to get Fish and Chips. Even though it was my first stop, it ended up being the best I had. The cod was a very generous portion (and I only got the medium) and it was delicious. The cod had such a nice flavor and was flaky, crispy and delicious. The staff was friendly and helpful, but wasn't bothering or rushing us at all! Plus, it wasn't very crowded and you can sit in or get it to go. Keep in mind, this definitely isn't a high end restaurant and it is CASH ONLY. But it is clean and delicious and conveniently across the street from the Waterloo Station. I knew what I wanted when I sat down (medium cod and chips), and a while later the order came out. There were only two people working at the time so I was ok with waiting. The fish and chips came out hot and plentiful. I was a little disappointed because the batter fell off the fish pretty easily, and was less flavorful than the last batch I had. The chips also could have used a bit more salt, but it wasn't too bad. This little hole in the wall is very close to an underground terminal station. Yes, the place is small; however, the food is definitely fresh and the service was fantastic! DISCLAIMER: I usually try to walk in every restaurant with an open mind. I did the same at Fishcotheque. In every review there is a inherent subjectivity, and my own negative review of Fiscotheque should likewise be taken with a grain of salt (as should their very bland fries or "chips"). But unlike other negative reviews, I base mine not on isolated events prone to extreme bias (an obnoxious waiter or a mistake in my order), but on the single most important factor that determines the inherent value of any restaurant: THE FOOD. THE FOOD (Medium cod fish and chips): BAD My friend and I found Fishcotheque on TripAdvisor (already a bit dodgy in terms of credibility and trustworthiness) as the #4 best "chippy" (fish and chips restaurant) in London. This unmerited ranking could not have been further from the truth, as my friend and I were in for a huge disappointment. The fact that I have had better fish and chips at Gordon Ramsay's fish and chips joint in LAS VEGAS (over 5,000 miles AWAY from London!) for about the same price should prove very telling. -------------------- ***THE FISH WAS DRY, TOUGH, AND UNFRESH*** This is the most important reason for my 1-star review. My micro-analysis of the fish reveals a hunk of cod that had either been left in the fryer too long, or was fried many hours ago and left to sit under a heat lamp the entire day. I lean more towards the latter, given that said heat lamp under which the cod was hung out to dry was in plain sight, right next to the cash register. Other telltale warning signs that this was the case include: -THE SKIN OF THE FISH WAS HARD TO BREAK Freshly fried fish should have breaded skin that is crisp and easily breaks along with the meat of the fish itself. This was neither the case, as often the skin would remain intact and would sometimes require slight assistance from a knife or your teeth to break. There were also random pores or holes in the skin, which is definitely not normal. The ends of the fish that contained only the fried batter itself (and no meat) were unusually hard. Anyone who has had fish fresh out of the fryer should know that the fried batter should be crispy (but NOT HARD), like the texture of a cheese puff. - THE MEAT OF THE FISH WAS UNUSUALLY FIBROUS AND CHEWY As with a steak that bites like rubber or a pork chop that wears out your jaw before you could even attempt to swallow it, the meat of the cod at Fishcotheque also had an unusual resistance or elasticity. It was slightly chewy, like chewing gum, probably indicating that it had been fried for too long or left out to dry for too long. Anyone who has bitten into a piece of cod fresh out of the fryer should be familiar with the way the fish seems to "flake" into perfect, organized pieces and provide no resistance to the teeth upon the first and many successive bites. The fish in at Fishcotheque provided no such texture. Instead, the meat of the fish seemed to break off into small but definitely visible fibers or strands that looked almost like the split ends of coarse and damaged hair. And it definitely gave with a sort of "al dente" resistance (good on pasta, bad on fish). - THE FISH WAS WARM, BUT NOT HOT It doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to decipher this clue. The fish did not come straight from the fryer, but rather arrived at our plate after a nice six-hour layover in the FOOD WARMER, which they had in plain sight at the front of the restaurant. If you're going to cut corners with food, at least do a good job of hiding it! - THE FISH CAME OUT QUICK (A LITTLE TOO QUICK) Read the previous bullet point. THE ONLY POSSIBLE EXCUSE (but a bad one nevertheless) for our fish to be unfresh was that we were served closer to the closing time of the establishment of 11 PM, or 23:00. HOWEVER, we were served our fish at precisely 9:04 PM (21:00) on a Wednesday night, almost 2 hours before the closing time of the restaurant!!! There were still customers walking in at that time. That leaves plenty of time and reason to fry a new batch of fish!!! (But they didn't!) DESPITE ALL THIS, the flavor (and by that, I mean JUST THE FLAVOR) of the fish was ok. I'm trying to give an unbiased review here. ---------------------- THE CHIPS were bland and cold, but to be fair, one cannot expect much better from eating cut wedges of plain potato. Prepare to wash them down with buckets of ketchup (or other sauce of your choice). Perhaps it was an instance of culture shock for my American palate to find distaste in the large, un-crisp and bland pieces of British "chips." In any case, the chips were so soft that they could have been baked in an oven (definitely healthier, but being healthy is not the reason one should be eating french fries anyways). Perhaps this is why when the British define "crisp," they're instead talking about potato chips! -------------- THE SERVICE: GOOD Quick and straightforward, though I would have gladly preferred the additional wait time if it had meant freshly fried fish read more

Decided on this place by the food reviews. It's a small building but we got seated as soon as we arrived. We ordered 2 fish and chips and 2 soft drinks. Food was hot and portions were good size but food was just ok. When it was time to pay we were using a card, guy checking us out tried to use our tap card as well as inserting the card, finally says sorry my machine doesn't work do you have cash we didn't have enough Pounds and he says do you have US? On our recent visit to London we found this Fish and Chips place that was off the beaten path. As people have said it doesn't look like much on the outside but don't let that stop you. I craved "true" fish and chips and this place fit the bill. We ordered the large and let me tell you......it's a bloody big portion! Came out hot and steamy. Fish was flakey and the breading was crispy and very flavorful. The chips were crispy and hot as well. Don't forget the Malt vinegar for that added pop. Visiting London and wanted a quick fish & chips experience before we started on our first day of touring. We stopped into this cute little spot and I'm so happy we did! The wait staff was lovely and explained any questions our group had on the menu. Keep in mind it is CASH ONLY so we got a chance to use our newly collected pounds. My friend and I split the calamari & chips plate and the cod & chips plate as all the plates come in a generous portion. Both came out piping hot. They were both delicious. Don't walk too fast as you're looking for this place because it's easy to miss. The restaurant has a lively ambiance, however, and the fish filet was really tasty. The fish was firm, flaky and flavorful; the portions were hefty; and the batter didn't overwhelm. The chips were a little bland in flavor, though, but that seemed to be par for the course across the UK. The server tacked on an automatic 12-percent tip onto our bill, however; and while that wouldn't have been a big deal in the States where the average tip ranges between 15 and 20 percent, it was a little bit of a turnoff in a country where the average tipping rate is 10 percent. A delightful fish 'n' chip shop across the road from Waterloo station. Opened in 1974 and, in some regards, it stayed there. Wonderfully camp decor and music ranging from ABBA to Black Sabbath. Back to the grind after a break! Actually visited this place early December during my stopover in London. Its a quick walk from Waterloo station. Place accepts only cash, so make sure you're ready. Staff was courteous and quickly got us seated. Of course ordered the classic Fish (cod) and chips. It came with Heinz Tartar sauce and a side salad. Fish was well cooked, I enjoyed it!
