Delicious food. Courteous and helpful staff. What more could you ask for? Except maybe a location near me, in Los Angeles.

Completely empty in the evening, which may be circumstantial. Long tables and benches, serving…read morestaff in German outfits. Service was a bit lacklustre. I didn't feel like alcohol and mainly came for the food, ordered tap water and got an odd look from the bartender as in "you do know this is a beer garden right". I approve of the chicken schnitzel, it is beaten well and not a dry piece. Normally schnitzel is a lottery where 50 percent of the time it will be dry like a bad Thanksgiving turkey where you need to gulp water excessively. My theory is the skill is in the beating of the chicken along with the timing of the frying. Other than that, it's obviously just breaded chicken. You can order it regular or small size. The chips on the side are really good and you get a red cabbage salad as well. Any sauces cost extra. The potato salad was also good and a generous serving for only 2.5£. I think the allergen information might be wrong, because it says that mashed potatoes has nuts in it. Maybe it's a German thing. Bill dropped off at the table before food being served, gave the feeling of 'finish your meal and leave so I can close up early', but maybe I'm overthinking. I would consider coming back on a day when it's a bit more lively. Vegan options available for those who think a seitan schnitzel sounds like good idea - not me.

The potatoes were not crisp at all and felt like they were undercooked. For the vibe of a Friday night to go and chill with friends, the place is amazing. You won't be disappointed at all. Maybe not the first choice for food.

On Wednesday, as part of our regular meet up myself and some friends went out for some food. The…read moreoriginal plan was to go to Padella, however when my friends arrived there about 17:40 they found a rather large queue at the door (you cannot book at Padella) so diverted to Katzenjammer. Katzenjammer is a German style "bierkeller" and restaurant. It's located just next to Borough Market so great for either a quick drink or a nice sit, eat and drink. We grabbed a table near the bar (because that's the best place to sit, obviously) and started to peruse the menu. I was feeling particularly hungry so went for the sausage platter; selection of five sausages served on a bed of sauerkraut or red cabbage. I also got a side of fries for us all to nibble. My friends got the Jager Schnitzel (hunter style schnitzel with a dark mushroom sauce), spätzle (Bavarian pasta with cheese and onions) and a small sausage plate. I love this style of German food. It may be massively clichéd but it is so ridiculously tasty and satisfying when you're having beer. My food was delicious. I started to struggle towards the end but I persevered and defeated the plate. Each sausage was different and brought something new. I was a big fan of the thinner pfefferbeisser and paprikawurst. Denser, slightly chewier sausages which pack ridiculous amounts of flavour. I love cabbage and the sauerkraut and red cabbage accompaniments were excellent. Of course, I tried a little of my friends food too. The Jager Schnitzel was crispy and a little dry but the mushroom sauce saved it. The spätzle was nicely cooked but massively under seasoned for my taste (and for my friends. He spent most of the meal adding salt and pepper to it!) All in all the food was very good and I'd eat there again without hesitation. The other reason we were there was for beer! I tried 3 different beers before we left; Paulaner hefe-weissbier dunkel (dark wheat beer), Rosarda (Belgian rose beer made with summer berries) and Floris Apple (delicious Belgian fruit beer made with apples). All of these beers were excellent and that was barely scratching the surface of the selection of beers. Katzenjammers is highly recommended. Food, drink and location make it a real winner.

I usually go to Katzenjammers after the Borough Market but it's been 6 months since my last visit…read moreso i was surprised they turned the first floor into an Irish bar. The bottom floor remains German, but didn't open until 5. Fortunately they have two Paulaner taps upstairs so I was covered. Smart business move, but they should hire another bartender and open the downstairs earlier.
