When you first walk its a friendly, upbeat atmosphere. The host that greats you at the register is very sweet providing recommendations on what to order. The interior decorations are cool. In no time we had our food. I have a gluten intolerance so I had the wurst without a bun. It came with slices in it to where I could cut it easily. It's pretty straight forward, wurst and fries. This place had me ready to meet Herman, but unfortunately I was not pleased to meet his acquaintance. The space is a chill atmosphere, you can come here with a group of people and enjoy a good conversation. The service here is good, the cashier had a good sense of humor and helped me out with ordering because it was my first time here. They have vegan options which was great for me or else I would have ended up eating fries and staring at everyone else's food. I ordered the curry vegan bowl, which came with a cut up vegan sausage with sauce spread around it and fries. This is where Herman fell short. My food seemed like it was over cooked, very hard to chew. I almost gave up half way through because it felt like a work out eating it (lol I'm so dramatic). I've been meaning to pay Herman Ze German a visit for a while. As I had an hour to spare whilst waiting on friends, I decided to give is a go yesterday. The interior is pretty basic, with wooden bench tables and bench chairs, with bare walls broken up with a bit of neon signage. The counter is at the far end, with again a basic mix of food choices. On my visit they were out of Curry Wurst and also out of cheese (not a good sign for early on a Saturday evening). I felt like a lite option (It's not the best place for that really). I went for the Wurst and Salad. I opted for the Guest Wurst, which was a mixture of beef, pork and garlic. I was really pleased as the wurst was really tasty. It came with ample salad. The salad also included small pieces of apple, which gave it a nice twist. The staff were very pleasant, although food seems to be the main driver here, and not service. I will definately come back, as I was to try the Chilli Wurst and the Curry Wurst. If you are looking for a fast food outlet, it a great change from a burger or burrito outlet. For some years, Herman ze German was a little and excellent wurst shop between Charing Cross and Embankment. However, in August 2013, Herman ze German upped their game and expanded into Soho. The second location in Old Compton Street is much bigger than the original shop and also features a few new items on the menu alongside the known food and drinks offerings that include great products like fritz-kola from Hamburg. With more space, the new location offers a different experience that goes far beyond the take-away snack appeal of the first location. It even features a toilet downstairs, and when I was there I could listen to funny sounds from the German version of Adventures of the Gummi Bears. That alone should be reason enough to come back. If you like hot dog, meat balls, schnitzel and fries, Herman ze German is a restaurant you should not miss. read more

I do like a long, hot sausage in my mouth and that's just what Herman supplied when I ordered the Currywurst and chips. Served with the "burner" sauce to spice things up, since the "hot" sauce isn't really up to its namesake, and topped with freshly sprinkled crispy onion particles for free; it made for a sehr lecker Deutsche meal. The Würste are of fine quality and seem authentic, while ordering at the counter and friendly staff make the whole experience very efficient indeed. The decor is decidedly German with a hint of hipster which makes for a pleasant atmosphere for a quick meal. The synthpop Lederhosen music, on the other hand, could have come from any decade and was on the brink of unpleasant. I appreciate the fact they have a vegetarian sausage option- truly I do. The only problem is it's very very dry and was on two separate occasions. Even when you add copious amounts of ketchup. The chain needs to review how the veggie sausages are being cooked and improve the end result. My husband who orders the meat version says the meat version is great on the contrary. Just after a snack, we grabbed a couple of giant beers and a plate of fries smothered in mayo and ketchup. Oh man, that's the stuff. This really is a solid pre-drinking venue, especially if you can grab a table. My friend had the sausage with sauerkraut and it looked pretty decent. tl;dr get the fries, no matter what you do. No, seriously, I enjoy the hot dogs (I find them a little salty, but I'm going to try to avoid a double entendre...) but it's the fries I crave from good ol' HZG. Herman's got the market cornered on sausages in Soho (nah, I'm just gonna go there), at least as far as the edible variety go (you're welcome). They offer a surprisingly nice selection of proper dogs & sausages that remind me of the sort I grew up with in Central Europe in the early 80s (ok I was tiny, but what kid isn't a hotdog connoisseur), before things got heckin' overprocessed. HZG's meat is tasty, and you want it in your mouth. I can't compare to 'real' currywurst because I'm always a bit sketched by stalls, but HZG's curry on its own merits is okay. Okay as in I'll enjoy it once a year and then remind myself the curry is too sharply tomato-y (without anything to balance it), too heavy on the curry powder (read along with me: I love actual curry, and I know this is not meant to be that, but y'all need to step back from the shaky can), and not quite umami-heavy to balance the sausage. Now, maybe if you get the extra-nuclear variety you'll be too busy dealing with hellfire to care, but in the more modest heat levels I find there's just a lack in cohesion. Which is fine! It really is. I bet this stuff is fab for nursing your hangover. Verdict: You're paying for the location, because the amount of nosh you get for the price is only 'eh', even for Soho, considering this is properly fast food. I'm a big fan, but sort out your veggie stocks. Let me set the context, I probably go to HzG about once a week, I went on my own at first, now up to five or six of us go and it's a trek. We get the tube from Hyde Park Corner to Leicester Square and walk through China Town to get here, all during our precious lunch hour. The food is that good! If you're veggie, this is one of the few places you're going to get a realistic (read meaty) hot dog that isn't full of potato, sweetcorn and pea's, it's absolutely brilliant. The chips are crispy and on point every time and the condiments and drinks (Fritz Kola) are tasty (though drinks are expensive). My real gripe, and I really hope HzG read this review, is the stock levels of your veggie sausages. On three separate occasions now I've made this trek of a journey to be told "Ohh, we've just ran out" which is INFURIATING when we've rode the tube and looked forward to it the entire way. I'm not sure what the problem with the Veggie Wurst is, but it never happens with the regular Wurst, but regardless, every time it happens, five or six of us then leave and go to GBK on Frith Street. You're losing a fortune. So, lovely place, meaty dogs look amazing, veggie dogs I can vouch for, but buy a bloody chest freezer or something to keep the veggie's happy, and i'll up the star rating considerably! read more

Came in here for a quick bite before a show and ordered the chicken schnitzel without the fries. They don't charge you less for this but they do make the salad extra large. The schnitzel itself for was very tender and had great flavours. It was a bit thicker than your regular German schnitzel but was still very delicious. The salad was a good balance of different greens, cucumber and some apple type thing which I loved! Service was average, friendly but not very talkative. You simply stroll in, place your order at the main counter and are given a table in the dining area and then friendly waiting staff come along and serve your table when your food is ready. Their hotdog buns can be more baguette than hotdog bun. The menus are only half of what makes Herman Ze German fun; the dining area is like a taste of Germany, like fixtures consisting of 1 tap for both hot and cold to a very wholesome decor with the dining tables and David Hasselhoff projected on to the wall downstairs / hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Soho upstairs. Excellent bathroom facilities downstairs which are also as German as can be. There is also a dining area on street level as well as outside seats. Their soft drinks were all German and I got to try Fritz-Kola here for the first time but it wasn't to my pallet and there were no American alternatives available. This place is amazing. I love it. Such a fun place to eat. The place is small enough but there is extra seating upstairs (or was that downstairs?) They server traditional German food including schnitzel but they are famous for wurst! German sausage. You can choose from different types of sausage and toppings. Can't say I'm a huge fan of this place. The food is simple German fare, which I guess is the pull, and if you're a big fan of sausage and what have you then you might like this place more than I. The ambiance is spartan and sterile. The beer selection is lacking, esp for a German restaurant. Also, you can't buy a beer unless you buy food (this is due, I am told, to their licensing). I came here on a date night dinner with my boyfriend and after he left to queue I snuck downstairs in hopes for more seating. The basement had some 80's music video being projected onto the wall in a nouveau conceptual art sort of theme, except that it wasn't a silent gallery hall but a bl**dy noisy and cramped restaurant. It was difficult to find a seat and, having found a seat there was lots of rubbish left over by other guests. No offense to them but it should have been cleared by staff. The seats were these uncomfortable narrow plank benches welded to skinny metal frames - they were obviously designed to be hip-looking but uncomfortable and space-conserving. When my boyfriend arrived with our orders he stumbled in the darkness before spotting me waving. Herman, it is just not ze thing to make it so dark that your guests can't photograph you at your wurst. I am amazed that there are any pictures of the food at all. Being the fusspot that I am I went for a limited edition chili beef dog. The spice was just a hint of smoke and spice from paprika and the beef was deliciously beefy. What really let me down however was the tough-as-old-boot baguette, which was too hearty for my taste. While you may be fond of them staying true to their European roots, I was hoping for something soft and squishy given the sausage was so substantial in girth and quality. Given my fondness for arabiki (Japanese coarse grind) sausages I was hoping for a similar legendary snap, there was a little of the 'dry snap' that comes from a well grilled sausage but not the crazy boiled or steamed sort of snap. All in all the food was good quality and if what I described is what you were looking for, Euro-fast food, then you will be happy. I was looking for my dream hot dog.
