I first learned of the Golden Chipping through a "best of Fish & Chips shops in London" on YouTube. It was named best chippy in *I believe* 2017 on Tripadvisor, and it sounded amazing so I added it to my list of "want to go...England!" bookmarks and was able to visit a couple weeks ago. Located in Greenwich, it is smaller than I anticipated. There are a handful of tables inside (4-5?) and then a few outside under the canopy. There are many options regarding the fish - I ordered the regular size cod with chips and mushy peas, because I just love mushy peas! The food: better than expected and huge portions! And I came in with high expectations. The fish was fried to perfection and was not greasy like American fried fish. Mushy peas and chips were perfect! So many chips... so many!!! I actually took the rest back to the hotel for a midnight snack. The server was extremely prompt when I first arrived but definitely became busier as the time passed from late afternoon to evening as this is a popular carry out spot. If you find yourself in the area, I highly recommend. Solid 5 stars for the food!

Service was slow. It took forever for the waitress to take our order even though we tried to get her attention several times, but she kept telling us to wait. Then it took another 20 minutes to get our order at our table. So painful just to order fish and chips. Decor is old school inside with just a few tables and tiny. The outside has more tables but can be cold. Fried cod fish was good tasting. Lots of crisp to the breading but not a very big piece. The chips were terrible. Not crispy, dry, soft, and blah tasting. The onion rings were horrendous. Must have come from a cheap grocery store frozen section. Mushy peas were decent. For $17.50 the fish and chips was far overpriced and the service was awful.

Cod (Regular) and Chips

This is a good local "Chippy" with covered outdoor seating. The young man behind the counter was very nice and accommodating. At mid-afternoon, he was also the cook. I ordered the Cod (regular) with chips and salad. The cod was piping hot and perfect, as was the salad. The chips, however, were a disappointment. They were soggy, with little or no flavor. I suspect they had been pre-cooked and warmed up. They were not crisp at all. It's just as well in that by the time I finished the fish and salad, I only had room to sample one or two. I still recommend The Golden Chippy, but I would ask for freshly cooked chips.

As the name implies, they specialize in fish and chips. But they also have some other things. We ordered the fish and chips, fried chicken, and minced beef pie. All were very good. The fried items were crispy, not greasy. The meat was not dried out. And the beef pie was very nice. For what it is, this place has some great basic comfort foods. I would come back the next time we're in London.

The fried haddock

I was lured here my one day in London based on the reviews and can say that Yelp came through hard with this one. We arrived around 2 PM and were seated promptly and since this was our first time having authentic fish & chips we went with the phancier haddock and side curry sauce to boot. The haddock was absolutely massive and the breading was thinish yet extremely crispy, and the curry sauce added a mild spice & savoriness to the fish that complimented it well. The owner even did the rounds going table to table ensuring the guests were all satisfied and we both thanked him and had some great banter, and after asking to snag some photos of the space he also took some with us and let me wear his seemingly iconic england-flag cap lol, just overall the perfectly authentic London local experience and we couldn't have been happier.

Peas!

Great food, great owner and friendly staff. One of the few icons we were able to visit in London on our way from Heathrow to Wales. Plenty of parking plus the owner was friendly and happy to see us all the way from Hawaii for some Atlantic fish and perfect chips. Loved the food and the local vibe. Right in the heart of London in a quiet little neighborhood. Fast and friendly staff for an iconic restaurant. Owner took time to come out and say hello! Plate was giant easily enough for two people with a few sides. Mushy peas are a must along with that flaky cod and hand cut chips. Didn't have time or patience for all the hubbub of the tourist hang outs, but The Golden Chippy is a must on any trip to the UK. Defiantly will be back again for some of that cold water fish and British hospitality. Mahalo (thanks) Golden Chippy!

Not very many yelp reviews but tons of TripAdvisor reviews. This place DOES NOT Disappoint. We purposely booked a hotel in this area of town just to come here the next day. All the items we ordered were really good. The fried fish is different than what you would get from a store. It was more lightly battered. If it wasn't so far from town center, I would come here each time I was in London.

Large Cod and chips!

First time in London so had to find the best Fish and chip place I could try. Took the DLR for about 20-30 minutes and walked to The Golden Chippy! Ordered a 'Old Golden Hen" and it was mighty tasty! Ordered the Large Cod with chips and my! It was extremely delicious and full of flavor. Wish there was a Golden Chippy here in the States but we'll be back one day Golden Chippy!

Cod, standard

Excellent fish & chips. Several options. The service is great. Seating is limited; but, do not let that be a deterrent.

Haddock skinless: excellent salad, okay fish and chips. Nice and crispy but a bit bland.
Adrienne D.

This was the highest rated fish and chips in London. We got the Haddock and got it skinless. It was excellent according to my friend but just okay for me. It didn't have any salt or seasoning on the fish or in the batter. It was hot, firm and crispy but a little bland for me. I think I would have done better with cod. I really enjoyed the salad. I used a bit of the dressing for the fish and that made it much tastier. The salad was perfect: oily, crispy and tasty. We also got the potato and that was expensive but good. Butter isn't an automatic topping so we got butter and added corn. It was okay, I didn't think it was worth the value. I'm used to eating potatoes with butter, sour cream and cheese so it was a bit different to go from that to just corn. Two things to note: there's no service charge so you should tip if you dine in. The prices on the menu are the takeaway prices. I got a bit of sticker shock even though I clearly read takeaway prices. Just be prepared. Would I come back? Maybe. The customer service was friendly and I liked the outdoor dining. I really enjoyed the salad and want to try the cod. It's highly rated everywhere so it's worth giving another shot.

Yummy place!! Best fish and chips and you can sit outside. Fish is delicious and all fresh! A++

Ok, I did finally eat here, after having many many drinks, and I was nonplussed with the vegetarian…read morefoot-long dog. It was dry and tasteless (and no, this is not what I'm used to from vegetarian food. I was a happy veggie for 7 years.) I asked for some jalapenos on the side, to liven it up, and it took about 10 minutes for them to arrive, only after I asked another server if they were on their way. Sure they were busy, but good customer service was not happening. So that was a bit of a let-down. But, I will give the food another try. My friend had a pizza and I was wishing I'd ordered that! I asked, and the dough is *lactose free*, so I'm happy about that. (I often have cheeseless pizzas - don't knock it till you've tried it!)

My husband and I arrived here on Monday, May Day. I was impressed with the spacious interior and…read morethe menu, although annoyingly different from online, is even better than on the web. There's even more veg options than posted online which pleased me. We walked to the bar and spied the mango cider on draft and the bartender was very good at convincing us to get a pint each! :). It's delicious! A bit sweet with a lovely mango aftertaste. We then ordered a ton of food. Monday is 2 for 1 burger night. I got the veg burger and my husband the beef. We also ordered two pizzas for takeaway: the Brooklyn (I think that's what it's called? with shrimp) and the vegan artichoke and squash pizza for me. I also got the quinoa salad and beetroot and coconut soup. I loved my soup, served piping hot and incredibly creamy. I was too full except for two bites of the burger and got the rest for takeaway but was quite happy with what I had. Very tasty. The quinoa salad was full of quinoa and served as great lunch leftovers for the next two days! I LOVED my vegan pizza. I was worried it would be too dry but the flavour combos with a kick of spice made it fantastic. My husband and I both agreed his pizza tasted better the next day! Dinking a star just because my husband was severely disappointed with his beef burger: he said it tasted like something out of the freezer and he preps better burgers at home.
