One of the best fish and chips I've ever had. The restaurant is tucked away in a small alley off the main road. It was clean and had great coastline decorations. We ordered the cod fish and chips as well as an order of onion rings. The onions were battered in a flaky crust and the onions themselves were quite sweet. Overall an incredible onion ring given the cost, freshness, and quantity you receive. Now, onto the fish. The cod was incredibly flaky and the crust enhanced the flavor really well. The chips were alright, not my favorite, but the cod was the real star of the show. Overall, I was able to have the British fish and chips experience and have it well. What a treat it is that a reputable chain has vegan fish and chips so I could partake in a London classic meal. I arrived and was asked if I wanted takeaway or sit in. My wife and I knew we had to partake of fish and chips this week while in London. Hobson's is a chain of restaurants with a good reputation so we came to this one which was in the path of our tourist wandering. It is very well run. The store is clean and neat. The staff is attentive and efficient. They answered our tourist questions with enthusiasm. I ordered cod F&C while my wife ordered haddock. Both were served very fresh and hot. The batter is crispy and light. These fish are not encased in an inch thick mass of greasy batter but are lightly coated with something that means more towards a good tempura crust. More substantial than tempura but in that quartile. I tasted both of our fish selections and enjoyed each. The cod is a bit more tender and the haddock has a slightly firmer texture. Really well done and the house tartar sauce really puts a nice finish on it. The chips/fries are also good. I like the American light crispy outside with a soft inside variety of potato fries, which is not what Hobson does. They serve Brit style which are a little more firm skinned. This was my first time having some authentic fish and chips. Delicious We found that Hobson's had some solid reviews so we visited their Soho location. All of us ordered the classic fish and chips (cod) and, at the same time, received a massive piece of fried fish and chunky fries (I'm American what can I say). The cod was fried perfectly. Super crispy and the fishy interior just melted in my mouth. Combined with the tartar sauce, the meal was complete. This is exactly what I wanted. The service was quick and very amicable. The menu has a good range of offerings. Honestly there were so many other thing I wanted to try. We got the cod and the haddock - both fantastic but the haddock was next-level delicious. It's more fishy but I really like how great the flavor came through!! Other high note - the grilled halloumi. A perfect example of how exceptional the basics can be when done right. My ONLY complaint was with the service. Our waitress was great through the ordering process, but then we never saw her again. No checking on drinks; no checking on food; and when it came time for the check (after waiting for about 30 minutes) I finally went and fetched the check myself. Stopped by here for lunch when I happened to have a long layover in London a couple of months ago. I specifically chose this place as they had a plant-based version of their fish & chips dish. I came right when they opened so there was no wait to get seated, though I'm not sure if a wait is common or not here. Along with my plant-based fish & chips, I also got a side of their mushy peas. My food came out piping hot and it tasted pretty good. Their plant-based fish is made out of banana flowers and kelp, and it even had some "bones" in it, which amused me. The chips were good and crispy, and the peas were fine. I was really happy to find a vegetarian version of a popular British dish and my server was friendly and attentive. It was served with the tiniest portion of tartar sauce in the most annoying thumbnail sized takeaway paper container. I asked for more tartar sauce, and it came in the same sized tiny container. We were staying in the center of London for several days. I was intent on tasting some of England's renown fish & chips. Our hotel was surrounded by pubs advertising fish & chips. But, my goal was to sample THE BEST. What better source than asking locals?! I finally decided to take an Uber ride to Hobsons. It was a little out of the center of town a bit in a local neighborhood. It was on a Tuesday in the middle of the afternoon. Upon entering, I discovered we were the only customers. I ordered at the counter and then proceeded to the rear and sat at a comfortable booth. Our food arrived in a very timely manner. I soon discovered that the "waiter" was the owner. He commented on how quiet it was. Usually, "We have a lot of take-aways going on". He was very friendly and talkative. In fact, we learned the entire history of the restaurant . When I commented on the quality of the food, he proceeded to explain his philosophy on using the freshest fish (cod or halibut), very clean oil, light batter and his "specialized" fryer. I never completely understood the fryer thing, but it was obvious he was proud of it! He was an absolute delight to speak with. And then there was the food. OMG! What perfect fish. Lightly breaded, then perfectly fried to a golden brown. Moist, flaky and very tasty. An added bonus... the fish to breading ration was perfect. A particular irritant of mine: when an attractive piece of fish arrives... you bite in and discover way too much breading and too little fish. This was PERFECT! Oh yeah, include the onion rings in the "perfect" category. Meaty rings of sweet onions with the perfect breading fried to the perfect golden brown again. Perfect, perfect, perfect all around! This tied for THE BEST fish & chips I have ever had! (The other place was in New Zealand). If I return to London, I am definitely coming back here again. read more

We had to stop by the Hobson's fish and chips after SOHO location to order a fish and chips to go. (I could not find the yelp business page for the Soho location.) There was a line when we had arrived but they said it would only take like 7 to 8 minutes if we ordered to go. We ended up waiting for maybe 20 minutes before our food came out which was slightly annoying. However, it was worth the wait as the fish and chips are probably the best I've ever had. The breading with crispy and the fish was tender. It was also paired with these delicious chips that didn't taste too unhealthy. Hobson's Fish & Chips is a traditional fish and chip shop, located on Porchester Rd, they have a great selection of gluten-free options, including sauces as well as fish and chips! I ordered from them on Uber Eats, the food was considerably expensive, even by London standards, a regular fish and chips came to £15.95 alone, after adding curry sauce (£3) and then Uber's fees (£1.90) my entire order came to £20.85 with free delivery! Compared to going into the store, the fish was the usual price, while the chips cost £0.50 more, and the curry sauce cost £1 more on Uber Eats (I understand why they need to charge more, to cover Uber's extortionate fees they charge to restaurants). I do find the surcharge for the gluten-free batter to be a little frustrating, but I do understand that they may incur extra costs, and I don't mind paying an extra £1 if I know it's going to be reliable gluten-free food, fried separately that won't make me sick. It would have been good to see them offer a meal deal, rather than charging fish, chips, sauces and even peas separately, to make the food better value for money, especially considering the 10% added onto the bill at the end, both inside the restauraunt and when ordering on Uber Eats as a "service charge". My food however was really good, it tasted almost normal, if they hadn't written gluten-free on the box, I could have easily confused it for normal fish and chips, the batter was the best gluten-free batter I've had, and the fish was good quality too. The chips were slightly soggy for my liking, but it seems most chippies serve them that way. The curry sauce was also pretty good, it had a great flavour to go with the rest of my food. I like how they also added a small onion ring into my box as a little taster too, which was a nice gesture. The temperature could have been slightly better, but with delivered food, it can be hit or miss, especially with Uber Eats track record. 4* - Excellent fish and chips, with staff seeming friendly when I rang in to confirm about their allergen protocols, prices are a little steep but it was certainly what I was looking for, in a late evening in my hotel room in London.
