My favorite was the coronation chicken, which I'd never had before (I don't think we have it in the States), but everything I tried was tasty and I'd be happy to have all of them again. The sandwiches are pretty reasonably priced at under £6, which is nice for an area where it's easy to spend the same amount on a cup of coffee and a muffin. I've always been in and out of the shop in just a few minutes, even when it's busy. Their prime lunch traffic seems to come around 12:30 and later; it was pretty empty the 1 time I went at 12. More like a piece of fish on some rice (and no that's not sushi). Real sushi focuses on the type of rice used, the right amount of vinegar on each grain of rice, the moisture level in the rice. The focus on the grip of the chef is immense, as it translates to whether the sushi falls apart or it's too firm. All of these things come together miraculously, and bonded by some wasabi with a gorgeous piece of generous sashimi. That my friend is called sushi. Itsu's sushi was dry, hard, firm. Sashimi was not fresh and started to dis-color. I personally think it's just unfair how London is dominated by all these bad Jap food chains, and ripping the Londonites of great Japanese food experience. We should mourn for that fish even, as it certainly died in vain. Ok I should stop being dramatic. Reality is that we all know if we wanted great Jap food you won't go Itsu, or these equivalent chains. But personally think it felt more like a mock up than real Jap food at all. Poppies has four locations, but this one on Hanbury Street by Spitalfields Market is the original. We were able to make an online reservation for six like an hour ahead of a Thursday lunchtime visit. We could've walked in, but the restaurant was fairly busy. The space was great, small and fun with a retro American diner aesthetic. There was a jukebox in one corner and tons of knick-knacks and memorabilia on the walls. We were with my parents and our boys, and the vibe was very easy and kid-friendly. We had a young, friendly server who wanted to talk to us about America, where he hoped to study. He was a bright-eyed sweetie, and he took very good care of us. We drank Poppies Pale Ale, which was on tap and quite refreshing on a hot day. And of course, we had lots of fish and chips. We tried both the haddock and the cod, which cost a dollar more. Our waiter said he personally preferred the haddock, and all of us ended up agreeing, though honestly both were delicious, flaky and flavorful, the batter light and crispy. The chips were great, as was the house tartar sauce. We also got sides of garden peas and sliced gherkins, which were both lovely. My kids had fish bites and fries. If you're looking for a chippy (love that word) on this side of London, I'd highly recommend checking out Poppies. It's a welcoming place with excellent fish and chips, exactly what we wanted for lunch that day.
